Finnish melodic death metal quintet HAGALAS from Jyväskylä releases their second EP “As A Unit” on April 4th 2022. Earlier they have released Crimson Tide EP (2018) and three separate singles that have gathered excellent feedback from the audience.
Now they present single “Destination:Genocide” from the upcoming EP. The track title tells pretty much what the song is about. It’s about people blindly counting on the dystopic totalitarianism and believeing that they are living a good life. But they are actually guided by tyrants. And we all know what is the most likely outcome from that situation.
“As A Unit” EP was recorded in autumn 2021 by the shores of Central Finnish lake Päijänne by Samuli Raappana (Tuuliajo). It is mastered by Tony Lindgren / Fascination Street Studios in Sweden. Hagalas composes it’s songs together as a band and so their sound has a power of playing really tight together.
Swedish metal quartet, THE DEFACED have released a new video for the song “Wreck”. It´s taken from the bands new album “Charlatans” that was released on Vinyl, CD & digital on March 4!
The band about the song: “The lyrics are about the aftermath of an ended relationship. The feelings one can feel after the dust has settled after the initial shock and hypertension has left body and soul. One can still have a deep attraction to each other but there is no way the relationship can continue, too much trust and hard words has been spilled along the way and the sadness that can bring to both parties.
We have always been very intrigued by soviet propaganda posters and esthetics. A relationship can sometimes feel like a totalitarian state, where you sometimes can feel that your personal freedom is restricted. I was in East Berlin with my parents a couple of months before the Berlin wall was torn down and I still remember the gloominess of grayness of the buildings and clothes. The lyrics are projected upon walls just like communistic propaganda. I loved how our video producer Rob Hakemo imitated the Cyrillic alphabet, it created an extra tension to the video.”
The Defaced was formed in 1999 in Helsingborg, Sweden, when members from Darkane, Soilwork and local acts joined forces. Writing, rehearsing, demoing and gigging eventually led up to landing a record deal.
The debut album “Domination Commence” was released in 2001 through Scarlet Records and Nuclear Blast America. The album rounded up feedback putting the band on the map. In 2003 “Karma in Black” was released. The album meant a clear progression to a more mature sound which was recognized in the stellar reception of the album. A video was shot for the track “Once in Between” which gained air-time on various TV channels. Gigs and festival slots followed the album release.
2006 meant line-up changes prior to the release of the band’s third album, “Anomaly”. The album treaded new ground incorporating vibes from alternative genres into the band’s sound. More gigs followed the release of the album. Then silence…
Awoken from hibernation in 2018. The fire was back, songs fell into place and off it went. The evolution of the band is clear. The heritage from early days blends in with the ever so prominent vein on exploring progressive territories.
About the album: Charlatans took its beginning back in 2019 when Mattias Svensson gave Jens Broman a call. Jens Broman hadn’t been working with music to any major extent since 2010 when he left Darkane. Since the release of the album, Anomaly, back in 2006, The Defaced had slowly started to dissolve during 2007-2008 and was finally set on pause indefinitely in late 2008. Mattias explained on the phone that he had written a bunch of songs that he wanted Jens to listen to. The intention was to start up The Defaced again. Jens loved the songs immediately and slowly during 2019 Mattias and Jens started to set up a work process for continuing working on the songs. – It all came very naturally, just like in the old days, says Jens. Klas Ideberg shared the same thoughts and ambitions and after recruiting new drummer Bob Ruben a new start of the band was on the table.
All instruments were recorded in Helsingborg at the Mansarda studios, produced by Klas and Mattias.Vocals were recorded and produced by Jens and Björn Strid at Studio Björngrottan, in Tyreså Autumn 2020. Mixing and mastering by Lawrence Mackory, At Obey Mastering, in Uppsala. December 2020.
As with so many artists much of the inspiration for this record, lyrically came from a large extent from the pandemic. Not as such but its creativity came as an involuntary pause from the wound-up stressed world. The songs cover themes such as struggles with relationships, self-doubt and eager frustration and a feeling that everything is already too late to change. Charlatans is an album that encompasses the sound of the earlier albums but given the addition of a more prominent progressive touch. The songs aim to give the listener an even greater sonic adventure than the previous records. Still, most of the heritage from old metal giants is ever so present, blended together with classic songwriting with a twist towards progressive soundscapes.

‘Skin Show’ could serve as the soundtrack to Times Square in the 1970s – the epicenter of sin and salacious misdeeds; a haven for sex, drugs, and crime beneath the inviting glow of neon signs from sleazy adult video stores; a place one would not dare walk alone after midnight unless tempted by devil himself. Its deviant, raw, nasty, disturbing, and yet, the most lively, evolved, and polished version of the trio yet.

French metallers STENGAH have revealed their new song, “Message in Memories,” which is taken from their upcoming debut album SOMA SEMA – released 18 March via Mascot Records / Mascot Label Group. You can listen to the track here.
Talking about the song Eliott Williame says, “This song is like achieving the puzzle of your life. Assembling all fragments of memories and dreams from the past and getting to understand who you are. The past curates a message for the present and gives you a wise choice to make for the future. You are not responsible for what the past was made of, but you are responsible for what you will build from it.”
Continuing he adds; “We musically and lyrically explored a very large colour spectrum and we feel this is one of the most powerful songs on the album, because it lets you dig into some harsh realities with very strong feelings, but above all it is a hopeful call to resilience.”
“Message in Memories” is the fourth song to be released from the band’s upcoming debut album SOMA SEMA. All of the songs have a thematic link running through them. “He and the Sea” is based on a French children’s book called ‘La Mer et Lui’ by Henri Meunier & Régis Lejonc. It is about grieving an achieved journey and the beginning of a new one. It’s a song about the challenge of finding new purposes in life, going through strong feelings, and curating our precious memories. The key to an endless existence. Interlinked with the band’s previous two videos, we find ourselves in the man’s head from “At the Behest of Origins,” exploring this incarnation of his mind filled with a confrontation of love, anger, fear, curiosity and balance.
The video for “At the Behest of Origins” is a beautiful cinematic experience, which follows a man who wakes up at the sea edge. The viewer proceeds to observe a ‘conversation’ with a woman as his inner self as they share enigmatic messages and dialogue in a language that is only available as a related poem hosted on the band’s website. This followed the band’s debut single “Above Inhumanity,” which is about a confrontation between loneliness and fellowship through an imaginary conversation.
The French quintet has spent the last few years in a state of perpetual evolution, armed with some of the most visceral and forward-thinking riffs and refrains in recent memory. With shades of crunchy post-djent muscularity, these young virtuosos are carving their unique path to metal glory. Both thrillingly primal and ferociously intelligent, this music aspires to enlighten and brutalise in equal measure.
Founded by drummer Eliott Williame, STENGAH has the sound, the smarts, and the ambition to push heavy music ever further into the future. After years of steady evolution and meticulous attention to detail, the band – completed by bassist Benoit Creteur, lead guitarist Maxime Delassus, rhythm guitarist Alexis Dewasch and powerhouse frontman Nicolas Queste – have honed their sound to a state of cutting-edge perfection.
“The music is about (re)connecting with yourself,” says Eliott. “It is about people, their fears, their faiths and their philosophies. How sometimes those things can guide them, and how sometimes they can blind them. It asks, with no judgement, about how odd and how strange the social and emotional behaviours of human beings are. It’s all about the power to believe, in creativity, and consciousness.”
