WARDRUNA Release Music Video for Album Title Track ‘Birna’

Norwegian collective WARDRUNA present the title track of upcoming album ‘Birna’, accompanied by a music video. ‘Birna’ –the she-bear in Old Norse – is a work of art dedicated to the warden of the forest, nature’s caretaker. The release is set for January 24, 2025 via Sony Music and By Norse Music.

Through Wardruna’s signature soundscape, this heavy, progressive song shows the valuable connection between humans and the natural world. Main composer Einar Selvik comments: “The song illustrates a dialogue between man and bear, exemplifying the various traits and abilities we humans have sought to borrow from these significant totemic animals throughout history.”

The bear frequently figures in the oldest myths of mankind in the northern hemisphere, and many indigenous people still regard this animal as a totem, honouring it with rites and songs.

Although the bear from the very beginning has constituted a threat to our own lives and those of our livestock, humans have always identified with the bear in various ways. If you skin the animal, its body underneath the fur strongly resembles that of man, which may be a reason that as legend has it, the bear in fact originated from humans, and for thousands of years we have strived for its strength and wit. In some cultures, “treading the path of the bear” means pursuing what you’re truly meant to do in life.

“The bear doesn’t need my help or any human traditional ornamentation to be its own powerful self. It is quite the opposite if one looks to past bear-traditions worth remembering. We learn, we dream of borrowing its traits and abilities. We fear, revere, and try to walk alongside but on separate paths. Respectfully, claim space and give space. However inconvenient it may be, further taming of the wild can never be the fruitful way forward. For me, it profoundly felt like the right time to give voice to the Birna, mother and shepherd of the vanishing woods,” Selvik concludes.

The music video for “Birna” was filmed in Rondane National Park in Norway and directed by Wardruna´s longtime collaborator Tuukka Koski, produced by Breakfast Helsinki and Ragnarok Film.

Birna was written and recorded between 2021 and 2024.

Swiss extreme metal trailblazers TYRMFAR return with their searing new single, “Haunted by the Truth,” the third offering from their highly anticipated EP, Symbiosis, set for release on March 28, 2025.

“Haunted by the Truth” dives into the emotional struggle of confronting past mistakes and buried secrets. The song explores the weight of guilt, regret, and the haunting presence of unspoken truths. With a powerful blend of vulnerability and reflection, it tells the story of a person wrestling with their inner demons, searching for redemption, and striving to find peace amidst the shadows of their past.

“Haunted by the Truth” is available now on all major digital platforms: orcd.co/hauntedbythetruth

Hailing from the Swiss mountains, Tyrmfar quickly made their mark in the extreme metal scene since their 2013 debut. Their EP In The Depths Of A Dark Spirit (2015) and the acclaimed Human Abomination (2017) led to major European festival appearances, including Metal Days, where they earned praise from Daily Rock as “artists who can shake the most seasoned headliners.” With their second album, Renewal Through Purification, and their 2022 release Dialectic of Ego and the Unconscious, Tyrmfar solidified their sound, embarking on a European tour with Gorgoroth.

The upcoming Symbiosis EP pushes the band’s compositional boundaries further, blending their blackened death metal roots with modern influences. Against the backdrop of an uncertain ecological and social climate, the EP reflects a deep exploration of humanity’s relationship with nature. Each band member’s distinct style contributes to the collaborative process, bringing raw emotion and intensity to both the music and their live performances.

Meet Tyrmfar:
Kévin Sanchez – Guitars
Florian Métrailler- Guitars
Quentin Brunner – Drums – Backing vocals

The Sinister Initiative to Release Unheard SHINING Album “The Helsinki Tapes” on December 13th

Posted by tarjavirmakari on December 7, 2024
Posted in: Int. News, News. Tagged: Shining. Leave a comment

The Sinister Initiative prepares to unveil SHINING’s The Helsinki Tapes on Friday the 13th of December. Conceived in 1996 by the tireless genius Niklas Kvarforth, Sweden’s SHINING stands as an unsurpassed pioneering black metal powerhouse, and The Helsinki Tapes represent a pivotal moment in the illustrious career of this fabled sonic weapon. These unheard recordings served as the demos for SHINING’s groundbreaking eighth full-length classic, Redefining Darkness, which redefined extreme music 12 years ago.

The Helsinki Tapes feature a devilishly perfect trio: Niklas Kvarforth, the talented Christian Larsson, and the DØDHEIMSGARD legend Yusaf “Vicotnik” Parvez. The brilliant yet ghastly material contained expresses inconceivable levels of evil and a devastating blackness of the rarest and most uncanny order. All those at The Sinister Initiative are therefore certain that this album will prove historic. The Helsinki Tapes will be the first new SHINING offering since the group’s masterpiece of a self-titled eleventh record premiered on September 15, 2023, courtesy of The Sinister Initiative in tandem with Napalm Records.

Founded in 2020 by Niklas Kvarforth, The Sinister Initiative is likewise run by COLD PROPHET’s Tuomas Tahvanainen as well as ex-ENOCHIAN CRESCENT and current SEGER’s Mathias Palmroth — the ideal figures to release the title at hand. In fact, under the Nucleart Design banner, Tahvanainen, who doubles as a highly sought-after graphic designer, provided the magnificent cover for The Helsinki Tapes.

Speaking of The Helsinki Tapes, The Sinister Initiative confirms:

“In the wake of our Re-Issue of ‘VIII / Redefining Darkness’, we are finally able to reveal that this December, SHINING will close the book on one of the more cursed chapters of their career. They have chosen to do so by having us release an additional album that we have only been hinting at before this official announcement! ‘THE HELSINKI TAPES’.

Niklas Kvarforth has, on countless occasions, mentioned the month that he spent together with Christian Larsson and Yusaf Parvez (DHG) in an apartment that they rented in Finland’s capital. The three resolved to use this space as a base in which to write, experiment and cause various forms of unspecified damage before heading to Varberg to record the new album. For years, the band has wished that these infamous demo tapes could be released officially somehow. We here at TSI, who recently issued the definitive edition of the very album for which these songs were created, feel that the time has now come to release the recording that the band themselves have stressed: ‘Is in so many ways far superior to the actual album itself’.

We may or may not agree on that, but there’s certainly a mesmerizing rawness and constant feeling of unease contained within this otherworldly material. Not to mention, the tapes serve as an audial retelling of how an obscure Black Metal band from Sweden transformed into something different and ultimately way more dangerous than even those involved ever could have anticipated.

The Helsinki Tapes are now available for pre-order from both The Sinister Initiative and Shining Legions. All copies will be promptly dispatched; secure the gift of SHINING as the ideal Black Christmas stocking stuffer now.

  • CD (Limited to 1000 copies)
  • LP (Limited to 500 copies)
