GIRLSCHOOL’s Kim McAuliffe Talks on How Girlschool Almost Altered Metal History & Band’s Final Tour + New Bass Player

Posted by tarjavirmakari on October 7, 2024
Posted in: News. Tagged: GIRLSCHOOL, Kim McAuliffe, The Metal Voice. Leave a comment

The Metal Voice recently interviewed Girlschool guitarist/ singer Kim McAuliffe. She spoke about the band’s last North American tour (w/ Alcatrazz & Lillian Axe), touring with the biggest names in metal over the years, new bassist and maybe one career choice she would have changed.

When asked if it was difficult to let go current bass player Tracy Lamb
“Normally people have trouble with drummers, we seem to have problems with bass players. Tracy left due to personal reasons. It’s a long story. She lives in Spain and her boyfriend had a bad accident, it was touch and go and she decided she could not come to America to stay with him. So now we ended up with Olivia Airey, Don Airey’s niece. She is a youngster. Now the weirdest thing about that is that when Enid left all those years ago. The late great Malcolm Dome recommended Olivia to us. But at that point Tracy Lamb had come back. So this time when Tracy went we just phoned her up (Olivia) and asked her are you up for it? And she said yeah and of course that is it, two weeks later she is playing with us. She comes from a very musical Family.

When asked if there were any career choices she regretted back in the early days ,
“Well there is one, sort of big one but I don’t really regret it cause I wouldn’t have been where I am right now. We got a choice for our fourth album Play Dirty, (82-83). We had a choice whether we could go to America, to L.A. and record with producer Spencer Proffer or stay in London and record with our heroes Jim (Lea) and Noddy (Holder) from Slade. We just wanted to record with our heroes and stay in London. Yeah we turned it down!

Authors note” In the same time frame when Spencer Proffer was working with Quiet Riot on their  Metal Health album and persuaded the band to record Slade’s UK hit Cum on Feel the noize.

The longest tenured all-female rock band and NWOBHM legends GIRLSCHOOL will be embarking on the last leg of their final North American tour this autumn! The trek will conquer the West Coast and Southwest from October 16 until drawing the final curtain on November 5. More dates are TBA!

The trek will see rotating direct support from LILLIAN AXE and ALCATRAZZ. The itinerary can be found below while tickets are now on sale and can be found HERE

Finnish metal band Ice Exiled has released a new single “Anthropocentrum (Set Me Free)” from their upcoming album, which will be released via Inverse Records on November 29th 2024. A music video for the track has also been made and is available on YouTube, below.

“Anthropocentrum takes its name from the Anthropocene, an era defined by a human footprint. The song places human perspective inside an animal. While another species’ experience is beyond us, we have no reason to believe that their feelings of pain, loss, or despair are in any way less than ours. These emotions, along with hope and love, are explored in this track through emotive and powerful music”, the band says.

The music video was filmed in February 2024, directed by the band’s vocalist Miika Matilainen. Two versions of the track were made: the original, over 8 minutes long, and a shorter, four-and-a-half-minute version that follows a traditional verse-chorus-verse structure. “These are like two different songs, both have their place and, in our opinion, work well. The longer version will be on our upcoming album,” the band explains.”

JULIET’S NOT DEAD Release Video for New Single ‘Open Fire’

Juliet’s Not Dead have released their new rocker, ‘Open Fire‘, the second track from upcoming album ‘This World Is Ours’ which is set for release early 2025. Stevie states:
“This song means so much to me, it was one of the first ones finished and totally encapsulated what myself and the other lads were feeling at the time. Releasing a song like Thrillseekers first was great because it’s so on the nose of being heavy & melodic, and a bit more in the direction we are going as a band, whereas this next single Open Fire follows on from where we have been. I really love this song.”

Order the single here: https://earache.lnk.to/OpenFire

Juliet’s Not Dead (formerly Twister) head out on a UK tour this Autumn under their new moniker, which will see them include their first new music since their 2022 EP ‘Only The Strong Survive’.
Main man Stevie Stoker said of the name change, “This is probably the biggest decision we’ve ever made as a band, having gone under the Twister banner for so long. But following the completion of our new album with Romesh (Dodangoda, as producer) it just felt time to evolve, to kick it up, to create a brand that better represents our sound. It was hard to take the plunge but now it’s done it feels great. We love our new name and I now need another tattoo!”
He added, “We will still be playing Twister songs, they are now just Juliet’s Not Dead songs and when coupled with the new material folks will see that growth and natural progression. These are exciting times for us, not that we were jaded or treading water but the new material sounds fresh and takes us to another level. Now we get to show our fans and hopefully gain some new ones too. We’ve spent so long perfecting this show and now we absolutely can’t wait to get out there and play for everyone.”

The run of dates will take the band up and down the country and will include new music taken from their 2nd studio album, slated for release early February 2025.

On the upcoming album, Stevie says: “I love this album, not only do I think it’s the best music we’ve ever written, but it was also the most enjoyable writing and recording process I’ve ever been a part of. Me and Jack wrote for most of 2023. We were even recording demos while on tour round Europe. We started by having the right production team and approaching it with a clear view of what we wanted the final result to be. Romesh and the boys at Longwave made our job easy and we literally smiled and laughed our way through it.”

Heralding from the North East, Juliet’s Not Dead are an adrenaline fuelled, driven band with the sole intention of thrilling their audiences at every show. Having just finished recording the follow up to the highly acclaimed debut album ready for release in February 2025, and if their latest EP ‘Only The Strong Survive’ is anything to go by; attitude filled riffs and a killer modern edge will be abundant.

The band have paired with mercury prize & Grammy nominated producer Romesh Dodangoda to set about crafting something special. Since the release tour for single ‘Don’t Play Nice’ in April 2022, JND have been crushing live performances with a truly unique visual show built in to a wall of Marshall cabs.

Just one way the JND boys have put a unique twist to a traditional staple of a rock show. After raising over £6k for music charities during the pandemic the boys took crowds by storm on two self-promoted UK headline tours in 2022, selling over 2000 tickets in the process. With single “secrets” getting to #1 in the iTunes rock charts as well as being track of the week on Planet Rock & also had significant air time on BBC, following similar success with previous releases, their stock is rising rapidly. As well as 2 UK support tours and countless festivals, 2023 saw the band tour all over Europe and play in a total of 11 countries, and they can’t wait for what is to come next!

Speaking about their new single and video for “Waves”, Daphne Ang and Andrea Papi shared,

The single is accompanied by an official video produced by the duo’s visual and video production entity, TCOMAS Studio.

Stream “Waves” — https://ffm.to/_waves

“Waves” is preceded by the release of several singles from the new album. The first single, “Mysterium Tremendum”, blended death metal, poetry, and classical orchestration, and was also accompanied by an animated music video. This was followed by “Feed the Beast”, a progressive rock and metal anthem delving into the theme of addiction and recovery, “Bite the Bullet”, a hip-hop/metal song featuring UK-based Italian rapper, Mr Meuri, and most recently, the single and video for “It goes”.

ORIGINS continues The Chronicles of Manimal and Samara’s impressive streak of self-produced efforts, and will be the duo’s third studio album in four years.

Providing a glimpse on what listeners can expect from the new album, Daphne Ang and Andrea Papi shared,
“Origins is about our personal experience of mysteries, rituals, true friendships, bad mentors, addiction, and death. This album is deeply personal, and is written from the heart. We dedicate it to the people who are still here, and for those we have lost. You’ll find many unexpected twists and turns throughout the album. Such is the chaos and unpredictability of life.”
