KINGCROW are maestros of progressive rock. For the past two decades, the Italian band have flown at the forefront of Italy’s progressive metal scene. But on the band’s new album, Hopium, they dive down a rabbit hole into a world where dreams are just illusions.
Hopium comes out tomorrow, Friday, August 23 on Season of Mist. But you can listen to all nine high-flying songs today by listening to the full album stream on the Season of Mist YouTube channel.
Hopium is full of desire yet mixed with the bittersweet taste of longing. Produced by guitarist/keyboardist Diego Cafolla alongside his brother and drummer Thundra Cafolla, the album ranges from dark introspection to joyous crescendos.
Lead single “Kintsugi” draws from the ancient Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with a hard-grooving riff, while “Night Drive” is an eerily hypnotic thriller that’s the perfect soundtrack for a dark night of the soul. The title track and closing number ends the album on a high note, weaving together progressive rock, ambient and metal music into a gripping tale about societal illusions.
With Hopium, Kingcrow demonstrate showcase their effortless command of dynamic range and raw emotion.

The first incarnation of the band was originally founded in Rome, Italy, by brothers Diego Cafolla (guitars) and Manuel Thundra Cafolla (drums) under the name of “Earth Shaker”.
Inspired by Edgar Allan Poe’s poem “Raven” and driven by a will of change, the band’s name was soon altered into KINGCROW and a couple of self-produced demos/albums where recorded under the KINGCROW moniker: Something Unknown(2001), Insider (2004) and Timetropia (2006).
In the early months of 2010 the band finished recording their new album “Phlegethon” that was released in June of the same year under the “Scarlet Records” label.
It was considered on an international level as a relevant masterpiece and was classed as one of the elite progressive metal albums of the year. It has been near the top of the “album of the year” charts in some international prog-rock websites. Phlegethon promotion lasted for about two years and a half.
During the same year, the band recorded the new album “In Crescendo” that was released in February 2013 by the American label “Sensory Records.
The band toured along with Pain Of Salvation in North America in April and May, 2013. In 2015 the band released the album “Eidos” and toured Europe as Headliners. Meanwhile KINGCROW signed a management deal with GlassVille Music, house of very well known progressive acts like Pain Of Salvation and Riverside among others.
The band recorded the new album titled “The Persistence”.
The album was released on September 7th via Sensory Records and received great reviews and ended on a lot of “best of 2018” lists on magazines and webzines.
The upcoming album “Hopium” marks another step forward in pushing boundaries remarking the restless progressive attitude of the band in incorporating countless influences into a personal sound.
Describing the band today is quite a difficult task, but one could state that the influence of different kinds of music, from progressive rock , ambient music, alternative rock and metal are all present in the music of KINGCROW.
With each release KINGCROW has taken a step further away from their original roots and is regarded today as one of the most exciting bands that Italy has to offer.

Danish/Faroese progressive metal outfit IOTUNN will unleash their second full-length album, Kinship, on October 25th through Metal Blade Records.
IOTUNN‘s Kinship is a massive album arising from the primeval sea. It’s a mythological journey through eight tracks that span immense spheres both musically and lyrically, exploring the deep roots of human nature, its connection and disconnection with everything and everyone, and how our choices have always defined ourselves and the lives lived.
Notes guitarist Jesper Gräs, “The creation of Kinship has been the most extensive and wild journey we’ve ever been part of. Like trekking up the Galdhøpiggen mountain in Norway, we have crossed peak after peak and seen things continuously brighter and wider until we reached the top, the end. Never have we been prouder and more pleased, and we hope our fans – old and new – will take this album into their hearts and let it unfold from there.”
Set in primeval time, Kinship unfolds the story of a tribesman who is part of a prehistoric tribe. It tells the story of life’s many conditions as themes of unity/disunity, light/dark, body/mind, nature/culture, good/evil, creation/destruction, and human/inhuman unfold throughout the album.
“Everything is related, everything has an impact, and we all must find our ways to our true selves and true freedoms in our choices in this interconnectedness of everything,” elaborates vocalist Jón Aldará. “The album explores themes of conformity versus following your own path and the consequences your choices have for relationships. It is also a consideration of the mind-body connection; especially with regards to how you interact within yourself, how you are influenced and controlled by the arenas of life and the interaction with nature. All this influences your identity, your choices, and your individuality.”
In advance of the record’s release, today the band unveils lead single, “I Feel The Night.” Comments Jesper Gräs,”‘I Feel The Night’ is the result of many years searching for a certain kind of song. Big lyrical and musical storylines of songs such as ‘Stairway To Heaven,’ ‘Child In Time,’ and ‘Fade To Black’ – to mention a few – have been at the core of inspiration for IOTUNN and we searched to make our song full of dynamics, feelings, and huge storytelling. This is ‘I Feel The Night.’ Lots of atmosphere and lots of heaviness.”
Adds Jens Nicolai Gräs, “When Jesper came up with the two core ideas that the entire first half of the song builds on, it was clear that we should make a song with a mellow verse and heavy chorus. I really enjoy the tone in this song. Then, for the last part of the song, it just kept expanding in the creative process but with the final part everything seemed to reach its natural final breath.”
The artwork and art pieces of Kinship were created by the ink and graphite illustrator and artist, Saprophial (Hammers Of Misfortune), with the design and layout created by art director Brian Ames at Metal Blade Records. Kinship was mixed and mastered by Jacob Hansen at Hansen Studios Denmark (Arch Enemy, Katatonia, The Black Dahlia Murder, Volbeat, Týr).

Italian cult progressive five-piece ATHENA XIX, led by Fabio Lione (ANGRA, ex-RHAPSODY OF FIRE, a.o.), will release their fourth studio album “Everflow Part 1: Frames Of Humanity” on October 25, 2024 via Reigning Phoenix Music (RPM). The new record is the first part of a concept inspired by the sci-fi and dystopian visions of such cinematic masterpieces such as “Strange Days,”“The Matrix,”“Transcendence” and “Sunshine.” It tells a story which blends ecological consciousness and moral ethics, control of the masses and indiscriminate technological progress.
Today the band unveil also a new single ‘Frames Of Humanity.’ With skillfully carved melodies and an intricately sophisticated yet modern feeling this song really has it all.
Fabio Lione recalls, “This is one of the first songs we wrote for this record. Actually this is the finale of the first part of the concept. We start this album and history with it, like a flashback. Very deep, melancholic and gloomy somehow – this is the perfect introduction to the concept!”
“Everflow Part 1: Frames Of Humanity” is not meant to be a simple summary of a highly-articulated narrative, but represents music inspired by unstoppable creativity, a tenacious desire to experiment, and the ability to perfectly embody the Zeitgeist of our time.
“I think this record will surprise a lot of people,” states frontman and founding member Lione. “Even today “A New Religion?” is considered the best Italian prog metal album by many people, and “Everflow” marks a massive evolution of our sound. We worked hard on it, also to give each song a particular cut which is consistent with the articulated story of the concept.”
The album will be released as digipak CD, synchro green 2-LP vinyl, and digitally.
“Everflow Part 1: Frames Of Humanity” was produced, recorded and mixed by Gabriele Guidi, Fabio Lione and Simone Pellegrini. The stunning cover artwork was created by book and music cover artist Dusan Markovic.
“Everflow Part 1: Frames Of Humanity” – Track Listing:
Originating in 1991, ATHENA released their most successful album to date, “A New Religion?,” in 1998 – still recognised and appropriately rewarded as the best prog metal album of an Italian band ever. The original band members finally re-united in 2019 — after several line-up changes and a hiatus — writing the new album “Everflow Part 1: Frames Of Humanity” which will be released on October 25, 2024 via Reigning Phoenix Music (RPM). ATHENA XIX shake the stagnant contemporary power/prog metal scene to its foundations, pushing far beyond the boundaries of the genre.

About W.A.S.P.
Few Bands in the history of Rock N’ Roll have ever incited the love, the hate, the raw emotional effect this Band has had on the world. From the very beginning, in the small venues of Los Angeles California, and later to the numerous countries worldwide that banned these Winged Assassins from performing live, the Band’s unique style of Shock and Rock caused Religious organizations, Local City Councils, Parliaments, and the Washington D.C. Senate to hold hearings in an effort to bar this group from selling records and trashing stages everywhere they played.
The band’s founding member, frontman Blackie Lawless, has led the group as its lead vocalist and primary songwriter since its beginning. His unique brand of visual, social and political comment took the group to worldwide heights and sold millions of records alongside a legacy of sold out shows across the globe for 4 decades.
Tamás Kátai has a vision that extends far beyond Hungary. While only intended as a studio project, over the past two decades, Thy Catafalque has grown into a lively collaboration that brings together other prominent musicians from inside and outside his country’s metal scene. With each album, he’s pushed the boundaries of extreme metal, bringing the world’s most vile art form into conversation with the avant-garde.
His upcoming twelfth album is Thy Catafalque’s most expansive release yet. XII features many familiar faces from the project’s wide discography. Dreamy synths swirl amidst riffs that are both catchy and crushing. Traditional acoustic and classical instruments accompany production that’s slightly more modern. But A gyönyörű álmok ezután jönnek also ties back to Kátai’s past and the history of his home country.
“I felt it was time to move in a different direction, whatever that direction might be, but A gyönyörű álmok ezután jönnek still possesses the dreaminess that I’ve always associated with Thy Catafalque”, Kátai says. “There is a tinge of nostalgia, a tinge of sadness, a tinge of hope, a tinge of beauty and still a generous amount of metal”.
Watch the surreal video for the album’s title track and lead single:
The video for “A gyönyörű álmok ezután jönnek” was created by No Total Films.
Of course, Tamás Kátai hasn’t been dreaming about his new album for too long. In true prolific fashion, Thy Catafalque’s twelfth album arrives just 14 months after the last one. Just like Alföld, Kátai set out to make a straightforward metal album, but while there are still plenty of chest-pounding moments, A gyönyörű álmok ezután jönnek took him on a surreal journey.
“I imagine these songs as guides through a dark night of the soul”, Kátai says. In the video for the title track, he runs through the streets of his hometown in Makó. As the path winds through the placid countryside, he’s greeted by strange scenes from both the past and present: rusted-out rail cars, bare-knuckle brawling, mysterious packages being dumped in the woods, a red-headed woman singing stoically in a field. At one point, he’s stopped in his tracks by the sight of his doppelgänger digging his own grave.
“The video is pretty personal”, Kátai says. “It was shot at places from my past and almost all of the actors are my old friends.” Despite the homecoming, the inspiration behind “A gyönyörű álmok ezután jönnek” isn’t so warm and fuzzy. “The title track comes from a place of disappointment”, he continues. “In the afterglow of nostalgia, there’s also a chill of disappointment”.
Even though it’s the closing song, “A gyönyörű álmok ezután jönnek” doesn’t end on a down beat. In fact, it just might be the catchiest song on the album. The return of tender brooding vocalist Gábor Dudás gives more than enough reason to celebrate, but the galloping hi-hats, bright hand claps and tireless, fist-pumping guitar hooks will make this song an instant staple of Thy Catafalque’s growing live set.
“The production has been very similar since Geometria” says Kátai. “This time around, I was aiming for a change in the overall sound”.
The flair for the avant-garde that has come to define Thy Catafalque shines through the darkness on album number twelve. But in order to see the light at the end of the tunnel, for the first time, Kátai needed some guidance from an outside producer. Granted, Gábor Vári is no stranger to how his mind works. When he’s not holed away in the studio with other prominent Hungarian metal bands, Gábor could be seen hammering away at his guitar on stage with Thy Catafalque on the live album Mezolit. In their time-honed hands, even the dark waves of synth on “A gyönyörű álmok ezután jönnek” glow with the faint but familiar reassurance of the dawn.
“The title means ‘The Beautiful Dreams Are Yet to Come'”, Kátai explains. “So even amidst the despair and disappointment, there’s still hope for a future that might offer warmer days after the darkness has ceded”.

For two decades, Tamás Kátai was content on sticking to the studio. That changed in 2021, when he and a cast of heavy hitters performed at the Fekete Zaj Festival. This milestone was later committed to memory on Mezolit, but Thy Catafalque has continued to grow into a steady and spectacular live act.
Earlier this year, Thy Catafalque headlined their first tour of Europe. Now, to celebrate the project’s upcoming twelfth album, Kátai and his ever-growing list of collaborators will perform at four concerts across Europe. This includes two very special shows at one of Hungary’s most influential underground venues, where they’ll perform songs off XII: A gyönyörű álmok ezután jönnek, along with all ten tracks on the recently reissued fifth album Rengeteg.
During these two special shows at Dürer Kert, Thy Catafalque will be joined by the noisy experimentalists in Shum, labelmate Saor and Kátai’s old band, Gire.

New fans and long-time appreciators can now rediscover just how much Thy Catafalque has grown since their humble beginnings as a duo. This year, Season of Mist re-issued Thy Catafalque’s first seven albums.
Tamás Kátai has a vision that extends beyond borders and boundaries. Even during its infancy, Thy Catafalque had already outgrown the rather rigid guidelines of black metal. Though only intended for the studio, over the past 20 years, his recording project has evolved into a lively collaboration. With each album, Thy Catafalque has pushed the envelope of extreme metal a step further, bringing the world’s most vile art form into conversation with the avant-garde.
Thy Catafalque’s twelfth album is even more expansive, but XII: A gyönyörű álmok ezután jönnek ties both to its mastermind’s past and the history of his native Hungary. “For this album, I felt it was time to move in a different direction, whatever that direction might be”, Kátai says, “but XII still possesses the dreaminess that I’ve always associated with Thy Catafalque”.
Of course, Kátai hasn’t been mulling over this album for too long. Keeping in line with his prolific pace, XII arrives just one year after his previous album. Named after the stretch of land where the producer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist was born in southeast Hungary, Alföld returned to the heaviness from which Thy Catafalque took root during the late ’90s. Once again, Kátai set out to make a straightforward metal record, but while there’s plenty of cause for chest-pounding, A gyönyörű álmok ezután jönnek ended up taking him on another surreal headtrip.
“I think of this album as an introspective journey through the night”, Kátai says. Opener “Piros kocsi, fekete éj” (which in English means “Red Carriage, Black Night”) glides off through a warm mist of piping keys, led by twin engine guitars that crest with reverb. “Time clatters on the rails”. Attila Bakos sings in Hungarian. His voice beams over the airwaves with the same clean force as 15 years ago, when he helped lift Thy Catafalque out of the Hungarian underground on the recently reissued Róka hasa rádió.
“Attila also sang on Rengeteg“, Kátai remembers about the first Thy Catafalque album that he wrote and recorded by himself. “‘Piros kocsi, fekete éj’ has the same sense for melody. It opens the album with a feeling of nostalgia”.
Of course, many other familiar faces join Kátai on his journey. After all, Thy Catafalque started as a duo with János Juhász. A gyönyörű álmok ezután jönnek features the biggest guest list in the project’s long discography. More than 20 guest musicians appear on this album, including old friends from inside and outside the Hungarian metal scene. Martina Veronika Horváth — whose band The Answer Lies in the Black Void toured Europe with Thy Catafalque earlier in 2024 — duets with the tender brooding Gábor Dudás for a faithful rendition of “Lydiához”, a 1980 Sebő ensemble classic that sowed the seeds for Hungary’s roots revival.
“That is a song that’s been with me and the rest of my generation ever since we were children”, Kátai says. Violins, cello, clarinet and other classical instruments add to the comforts of home. Before it drifts off high beyond the clouds, “Vakond” strings along like a whistling stroll across The Great Plains. “Alföld was very bleak”, he continues. “Adding classical and acoustic instruments helped add a spring of color and an air of adventure to these new songs”.
Still, A gyönyörű álmok ezután jönnek can be a hard road — especially during its crushing middle section. Despite the gentle opening plucks, “Mindenevő” crashes down like a boulder, hurtling ahead at terrifying speed behind doomy operatic backing vocals, mechanized blast beats and the eerie fires of tremolo picking that forged Thy Catafalque’s debut Sublunary Tragedies. “This album still has plenty of metal”, Kátai assures.
The heaviest moments are often grounded in Hungary’s history. While colored by nostalgia, XII is also shadowed by the ticking hands of time, a theme that ripples back to 2021’s Vadak. Blackened chugger “Vasgyár” shares a namesake with the rusted-out ironworks that once fueled the country’s economy. It’s not a political statement, but the song does reflect how the landscape has changed to the eye of the now 48-year-old Kátai.
“Even the album’s visuals are from a bygone era”, he says. In the video for its title track, closing song and lead single, Kátai doesn’t just run through the streets of his hometown. Surreal scenes from the past and present linger along his winding path through the placid countryside. Watching his doppelgänger dig his own grave feels like a living nightmare. “‘This song comes from a place of desperation”, he says. “Within the afterglow of nostalgia, there’s also the chill of disappointment”.
Ultimately, the progressive flair that has come to define Thy Catafalque shines through the darkness on album twelve. Only this time around, in order to reach the light at the end of the tunnel, Kátai needed some guidance. “I felt like the production had largely been the same since Geometria“, he admits. XII marks the first time in the project’s history that he worked with an outside producer. Granted, Gábor Vári is no stranger to how his mind works. When he’s not holed away in the studio with other prominent Hungarian metal bands, Gábor could be seen hammering away at his guitar on stage with Thy Catafalque on the live album Mezolit. “He was the perfect person to help give this album a somewhat different sound that is still familiar”.
As a result, “A gyönyörű álmok ezután jönnek” stands out as one of Thy Catafalque’s biggest crowd pleasers, uplifted by hand claps and catchy, fist-pumping riffs. Even the dark waves of synth glow with the reassurance of the dawn. “At the end, there’s still hope for a future that might offer warmer days after the darkness has ceded”.
Thy Catafalque’s twelfth album looks back longingly at the past, Tamás Kátai isn’t stopping to smell the roses. With A gyönyörű álmok ezután jönnek, he shows that the beautiful dreams are yet to come.

The album is available on CD, MC, and LP and the band couldn’t be happier: “We’re pleased to be able to bring to you, the European faithful fans of all things Heavy, the chance to own an album we’re very proud of. In this day and age, import fees are at an all-time high. With our new worldwide distribution, we have cut that out so you can now obtain our newest release at a nice price.”
Kingdom Immortal was recorded in a diabolically effective six-day-studio-power-working-session with producer Alex Perialas (Anthrax/S.O.D., Overkill, Testament, Joe Bonamassa), for whom the band has a lot of praise: “One reason we decided to work with Alex Perialas is due to his unique ability to capture lightning in a bottle. As many know, Alex recorded the legendary Speak English Or Die album by S.O.D in two days and mixed it in one day while Anthrax was in the studio recording Spreading The Disease. Going back to basics, not only did we want to have spontaneity on record, but also make an album with real instruments captured with vintage microphones on a physical console and outboard gear, with no artificial samples or computerized plug-ins.” To save time while in the studio, they chose to record to Pro-Tools instead of recording to tape, which also saved time with digitizing for CD mastering. “With the exception of studio amps and guitars that were also used on Alex’s previous projects, every instrument on Kingdom Immortal is what we use live. I know it’s not exactly ‘en-vogue’ nowadays to have a record released without modern production elements. All I have to say is Led Zeppelin’s IV still sounds incredible 53 years later…”.

When entering Kingdom Immortal, the third track that greets you is Phantomland. The song brings you on a journey to a far away land not fit for man nor beast, so beware of what lurks in the shadows. Musically inspired by Tom Petty’s Refugee and thematically inspired by the original Nosferatu, Phantomland brings you to the land of the undead, where fight or flight is the only chance of survival.
As MIDNITE HELLION’s dexterous drummer Drew Rizzo points out: “Phantomland is a five minute euphony of chaos, adventure, and insanity. Join us or perish!”
Bearing the fruits of Drew’s effort and creativity, filming, editing, and storyboarding, Phantomland is the band’s first single accompanied by a (DIY!) music video.
For those who have seen MIDNITE HELLION live in the past few years, touring for Kingdom Immortal has had a different guitarist for each leg so far. Charles Koegler recorded the guitars on the album, and did a stellar job performing live in 2022 when MIDNITE HELLION first toured with Anvil. Unfortunately, he was unable to continue touring, so he stepped down. “In his place, our Canadian friend Jeff Wilson came through for us for our second leg with Anvil in 2023, and funny enough, we had more Canadians on the tour package than we did Americans!”, says the band. While Jeff may join the band again down the road, his schedule is currently booked solid as a touring guitarist for Lutharo. “We wish to thank both Charles and Jeff for their tremendous contributions to Midnite Hellion’s live events!”, the guys address thankfully. Now, the band members are pleased to welcome from the great state of West Virginia, Matt O’Donnell to handle the guitar-slinging duties for them on their upcoming tour with U.D.O. and beyond! Matt is now a resident of the Garden State and is primed to join MIDNITE HELLION in showing everyone what New Jersey Heavy Metal Rock ‘n’ Roll is all about!
