Ex-RUNAWAYS’ Cherie Currie Talks Band’s Turbulent Times, Incident w/Rush, Kidnapped & Reconciling w/Kim Fowley

Jimmy Kay from The Metal Voice recently spoke to Former Runaways singer Cherie Currie about her upcoming European tour 2024.

Currie also spoke about her turbulent times in the Runaways, the Rush incident in Feb 10, 1977 in Detroit and her being kidnapped after she quit the band and a whole lot more…

When asked how band manager Kim Fowley would encourage others to throw things at the band during rehearsals
“Oh yeah he would have people come in and throw trash, trying to get us ready for anything. It was the Runaways boot camp and you know. I loathed Kim Fowley. Also I got hit by the IRS as soon as I left the band. I thought all the girls had been for money that I never made and that I was forced to pay. I loathed him for many reasons but then when I heard he was sick I had seen him at a party and I just really realized that this hatred that I had hurt only me and that this was so unhealthy. I just decided that I was going to hand an olive branch and so when I saw him at this party over at the Houdini Mansion, he was kind of expecting me to want to push him in a pool or something. I said let’s talk and so we did and we talked for hours and he cried literally. He knew that he had made a grave mistake and not only that I left right when we were more than likely going to have a huge hit. Then when he got ill I moved him into my home and took care of him towards the end of his life and he was bedridden. So we’re talking bedpans and we’re talking sponge baths and you know it was the best time of my life. We recorded, we wrote and I loved him when he died and so all the feelings that would have been hatred is love now. You got to forgive you got to forgive I’m so glad that I did. “

When asked about when she quit The Runaways
” I couldn’t even watch videos or anything after our breakup. It was hard, very very hard because the ending was so devastating. And again it was because we were just working to the Bone to the Bone, we never had any time off, we weren’t being paid and there was this inner friction within the band that we didn’t have a mediator. If we would have had a mediator it would have made such a difference. Kim Fowley (manager) seemed to believe and he regretted this for the rest of his life. Kim just believed that if there was tension that it would be more rock and roll on stage that it would just have this grittiness. But unfortunately we were too young to handle it. You know 16, 17, 18 you know we were children. “

When asked about owing money to the IRS because of Kim Fowley cooking the books
“Kim Fowley actually claimed that my twin sister also owed $20,000 in taxes uh so this was him being a conniving con man. I’ll never forget this (IRS) agent turned around and he goes to my father, we don’t give a damn whether she made the money or not. She’s going to pay it and I paid $100 a month from the time I was 17 until I married Robert Hayes in 1990. He (Robert) just happened to see me writing out another $100 check and he paid it off. At that time I owed about $2600. Kim Fowley was stealing all the money so he had to find some way to not pay the taxes for the money that he stole because the Runaways made nothing. I mean nothing. The Japan tour which was the last tour was the only tour where we made money and I’m talking about us selling out huge venues, merchandise, up the kazoo, tens of thousands of dollars a night and each one of us got a check for about $1,700 . I can’t even imagine the amount of money that The Runaways made on these tours I can’t even imagine after 35 years. We never got any royalties either, we ended up having to turn around in sue Kim Fowley and Polygram/ Mercury to get our royalties and that was in 1997. But unfortunately they take 50% of everything and uh you know right now it’s 30 years so I’m going to have to start disputing that.

When asked how much of the Bio Pic The Runaways movie was exaggerated
“I can’t say it was exaggerated at all. They based the movie on my original 1989 paperback book Neon Angel and uh I don’t know why she (Floria Sigismondi director) didn’t think that there were enough treacherous stories in there but she actually wanted my character in some hotel room blowing crack cocaine in a dog’s face. I told her first of all I will sue you if you even attempt this because then I’ll have people hating me for something that I would never do. But she changed things around like. I wore the corset for the first time in Japan (in the movie) however (in real life) I wore the corset almost right out the gate.”

When asked about their incident with Rush opening for them at Detroit’s Cobo Hall on February 10, 1977
” We had been treated so well by Tom Petty who opened for us and Cheap Trick who opened for us but Rush sabotaged our set. We’re at Detroit’s Cobo Hall. It’s a big venue. I saw them and they were throwing pieces of paper just like standard 8 by10 paper onto the stage whipping it like you would a pizza. I was in 6-in platform boots and I had to jump off of Sandy West’s drum Riser. I hit one of those pieces of paper and I slid across that stage and there was an orchestra pit with all the photographers. I’ll never forget seeing them reach up with fear that I was going to go over and somehow I caught myself right at the last minute and did one of those you know (rock star poses) to one of the photographers. I could have been paralyzed. I’m not exaggerating, I could have been very much injured had I gone off that stage. So that’s why Joan and I in particular don’t care much for them because they weren’t protecting us, they were sabotaging us that night and they would be sitting there behind Lita’s (Ford) amp (snickering).”

When asked about Peeing on Rush’s guitars as a form of retaliation (as portrayed in the movie The Runaways)
“I wasn’t there I didn’t pee on anybody’s things. If it did happen it could have been Joan (Jett) and Lita(Ford). It was not me. It’s hard for me to imagine that. Joan was very subdued and self-conscious and I don’t really see that happening personally. I’m not saying that it didn’t because I wasn’t there.”

When Asked about her being kidnapped shortly after quitting the Runaways
” I just left The Runaways and this man pulled up and it was like Cherie long time no see. Good looking guy and he’s in a green limousine. I’m thinking to myself, oh I don’t recognize him but I was a people pleaser. I didn’t want to make anyone feel bad I didn’t want to turn around and say gosh I don’t remember you. I played along with it and there was a guard right there to my left. My friends were right there and he said look at my new car and I said well that’s nice. He goes well, why don’t you jump in as I pull around to park .This voice immediately said don’t do it but I looked and I saw the guard was right there. I thought for some reason that they overheard him but they didn’t and it was being a people pleaser not wanting to hurt his feelings. I got in the car and he’s pointing at all the gadgets, look at this, look at that. And we’re coming around this horseshoe and I saw him pass one spot and it’s a limousine right so there were only a couple of spots that it took and then the Master locks came down and he just went right out the parking lot. I didn’t have my purse, I had nothing on me. I didn’t have an ID, nothing . He took me probably 15 miles to the Osborne exit off the 170 freeway to a desolate area to a house. I screamed enough trust me no one came. He got me probably at about 10 at night, my sister was supposed to pick me up at 11:pm. He held me until about 5 in the morning when I talked him into going back with him to Dallas, this is after I’d stabbed him with a knife. I’m very lucky he didn’t kill me but I literally was so desperate because he kept telling me he’d killed six women and he was going to kill me. So I was in that kind of Terror. After I’d stabbed him he was beating me, he drugged me, he knocked me to the ground and dragged me by my hair into the bedroom and he literally straddled me and was punching me in the face where I started to go unconscious. Then I heard this voice saying don’t you remember we used to do this. I was just playing, I was just playing. I didn’t mean it, you know , I love you. I was just falling into this Blackness of unconsciousness and all of a sudden the blows became less and less and less and I said take me home and I’ll get my stuff and we could be together and he believed it. It bought me my life. I’ll never forget he’s driving to my friend Vicky Ronald’s apartment and my dear friend Andy Raffles. I knew Andy would be there. I knew they were searching for me at this time because I left my purse. I had him drive me to Vicki’s apartment. He brought me down into the underground parking lot and I said I’ll be right back and I get out and I get into the stairwell and I collapsed. I mean I just literally fell on the floor and I crawled up the stairs and I got to the apartment I knocked on the door and Andy opens that door and he lifted me up and I just said he’s downstairs that’s all I said. Andy grabbed a butcher knife and a flashlight and he went out that door and he got that license plate. It took the police literally 30 minutes and they took me from the hospital in the patrol car to ID the house which I did about 7:30- 8:00 in the morning. Then the police waited till the following morning at about 4 a.m. and they busted through that door and they dragged him out naked and you know he I went to trial and he had decided to take a plea deal. He pleaded to sodomy by force and got one year in county and they dropped the kidnapping, the baiting, everything, all the sexual assault because it was you know arms length what he had done and more. So he pleaded guilty to sodomy by force and got one year in county I think he’s dead today to be honest or changed his name.”

KID KAPICHI Release Video for ‘Can EU Hear Me?’

Emerging “power punk” sensations KID KAPICHI have released a video for their fan favourite track “Can EU Hear Me?’ and have been announced as special guests on the forthcoming Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes EU tour!

The UK went to the polls on Thursday, July 4th, and KID KAPICHI has strong views on the political state of their homeland. They made the following statement in days leading up to the elections:

“It’s not an overstatement to say that the result of (this) election will have repercussions that will last for generations, whatever the outcome. Another term of Tory government will see the social and physical infrastructure of this country finally bent to the point of breaking, and the final clusters of struggling public resources will be used to line the pockets of a ruling elite.

“All the proof anyone needs is there to be seen from the last 14 years.

“We’re in an unfortunate situation in the UK where a vote for change is usually choosing between the lesser of 2 (or more) evils, and rarely aligned with people’s actual ideals of the things that would be beneficial to this country. That is particularly pronounced at the moment with the disappointing and dreadful leadership of an already concerning Labour Party.

“It would do wonders for this country to have more than 2 political parties in prominence, it would balance out government action and potentially reduce the divided society that a binary political system creates; sometimes it takes voting for the underdog parties a few elections in a row to help them rise to prominence.

“It has to be stressed that splitting the anti-Tory vote and having even one more term of conservative government would likely damage the fabric of this country beyond repair for decades to come. People counting their chickens to say the Tories don’t have a chance need only remember the social media echo chambers which landed us in the 2019 election, Brexit, Trump etc.

“That is why we would urge everyone to use their voice and their vote wherever possible, and to make sure you make yourself aware of how your vote can be used tactically to get the Tories out of power, even though we fully acknowledge and share in absolute criticism and protest against Kier Starmer’s Labour Party.

“At the moment, our beliefs are in all honesty more aligned with the Green Party, but in Hastings where the Tory seat is won or lost by a handful of votes, tactically we need to vote Labour to get the Tories gone. It’s not by any means simple, but it feels like whatever it takes to remove the Conservative government has to be the priority in whatever form that takes.

“In an ideal world we would support the parties we want to see in power in the future, and once the tories are out that feels more in reach – but at the moment allowing them to remain in power feels like the greatest of all evils and a crushing blow to the future of the UK. F**k the Tories and what they’ve done to this country.”

KID KAPICHI embarked on a packed-out 2024 UK and European headline run to celebrate the release of ‘There Goes The Neighbourhood.’ The video for “Can EU Hear Me?” shows the lunacy of these shows and life on the road.

On heading out with Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes, vocalist/guitarist Jack Wilson commented:

“Last time we were out on the road with Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes was in 2019 before anybody had even heard of the word Covid or even the words ‘Kid Kapichi’. It’s safe to say Frank gave us our first break as a band and we owe him and the rest of the guys a lot. This tour is going to be a real celebration of our love for them and all of you in Europe. You know we can’t stay away too long.”

The Intemperate Sons have unveiled their latest song, a heavier more high energy cover of Nirvana’s “Dumb,” featured on their newly released album, Dark Day’s Night.

STREAM “Dumb” at https://ffm.to/tisdumb

This album takes a darker turn from their debut, mirroring the tumultuous times we live in today. In Dark Day’s Night, The Intemperate Sons explore the hidden demons within us all that no one else can see, reflecting the notion that the brightest souls often burn the shortest before fading away.

Immerse yourself in the gritty sonic landscape of The Intemperate Sons’ second album, Dark Day’s Night. With tracks like the haunting title song, the introspective “Falling Under,” and the reflective “Way Back When,” this album weaves a compelling story of resilience amidst turmoil. “Unrealized” and “CØNTRØL8” delve into the battle for autonomy in a disordered world, while “Game of Keep Away” offers a raw take on the struggle of self-destruction and survival. The album also features a heavier, more intense cover of Nirvana’s “Dumb,” adding a unique layer to this already diverse album. Dark Day’s Night is not just an album; it’s a journey through the shadows, echoing with the sounds of defiance and liberation.

The Intemperate Sons release all their music through the Frame|Work record label at the direction of Amir Derakh and Ryan Shuck. All Intemperate Sons’ tracks are mixed by Amir Derakh at Synthicide in Long Beach, CA. All mastering is done by Mike Marsh Mastering in the U.K.

The Intemperate Sons emerged onto the rock scene in the summer of 2019 in Dallas, TX, to bring their distinct sound to the genre. A deep love for music brought family members Keith Watson (drums), Jake Watson (guitars) and Max Watson (vocals, guitars, keys) together along with close friend Mark Marks, who provides the groove on bass to unite everything together. The band’s sound has been described as a 90’s alternative style that is obsessed with the 70’s.

Keith is well acquainted with entertaining massive crowds of concert goers and has played with many successful bands in Dallas, such as Gun Hill, Natural Born Thrillers and Agents of Solace, on top of opening for Lynch Mob, Joe Lynn Turner and Sponge. He is the primary lyricist for the band and has written the music for some of their most successful songs, including “Dust to Dust,” “The Color Within,” and “Unrealized.”

Multi-talented and gifted with the ability to play various instruments, Max is also the lead vocalist of the group. Along with being musically dexterous, he has also collaborated with Keith to write lyrics on the released songs “Going Crazy” and “Way Back When.” In the studio, Max usually surmounts expectations and goes above and beyond to prepare prior to a session with his own vocal harmonies.

Jake is the song architect of the Sons and extremely instrumental in the crafting of the music. His inventive ways of bringing lyrics to life in clever ways are unprecedented and fascinating to see in the studio setting. He is a prolific writer of music as well and is credited with helping create the songs “What’s Done is Done,” “Remission,” “Way Back When” and “Wading in the Gray.” Both Max and he play lead guitar on many of the songs as well. The other members of the band fondly refer to him as the “art director” since he enjoys taking charge in those areas for the group.

Prolific and unifying, Mark is an accomplished bass player and well known in Dallas. He was in the regionally successful band, Haggard, and had opened for Sebastian Bach of Skid Row. His input in song writing has been invaluable to the process of creating captivating melodies.

Despite the pandemic putting a pause on many major events, The Intemperate Sons lived up to their name and let nothing hold them back from making music. Constantly hard at work in the studio, they have collaborated with Amir Derakh (Julien-K, Dead by Sunrise, Orgy, Rough Cutt) and Ryan Shuck (Julien-K, Adema, Dead by Sunrise, Orgy). Both have lent their musical talents to various songs and ultimately have brought the Sons on to their label, Frame|Work. This led the band to also recently join the management roster at The Label Group. Ryan worked with Amir to produce the band’s upcoming track, “Game of Keep Away,” and has had a huge impact on the group. He’s been especially influential on Max’s vocal melodies and delivery. Amir also plays guitar on this latest ballad and has been mixing all of the band’s music as well as performing on multiple songs.

Another notable collaboration has been with Tony Franklin (The Firm, Roy Harper, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Whitesnake), primarily on the first album, The Color Within. He has been a valuable friend of the band and has played bass on some of their best tracks from that album, including “Running Man,” “Dust to Dust” and “The Color Within.”

The Intemperate Sons’ take on alternative rock is a dark and powerful concoction of hard rock mixed with folk and grunge concepts. The band has earned a serious reputation for writing and performing tracks that scratch deep into the backbone of the human experience. There is no shortage of darkness in their writing style, which has a retro vibe with many guitar-driven tracks stacked on top of a groovy rhythm section. The heavier style fits perfectly with the two and three-part vocal harmonies that are a huge part of their overall sound. It has been said that musicians that are related form unique sounds and communicate at a frequency only they can understand. This frequency has become engrained in their songwriting, arrangements, guitar melodies and vocal harmonies. The band has been compared to Alice in Chains, Stone Temple Pilots and even R.E.M.

EARTH LUX Release New Single And Video ‘Shine On Me’

EARTH LUX release “Shine On Me, the first pre-release single from their self-titled debut album out on 23 August on Metalville Records.

“Shine On Me” impressively emphasises what melodic hard rock must sound like in 2024. The bold yet transparent production fully emphasises the performance of the exceptional musicians of ‘Earth Lux’. The hooks and chorus are composed to the point and achieve absolute catchy tune status thanks to the unmistakable voice of singer Mark Boals. ‘Shine On Me’ has everything it takes to become a true genre classic.

EARTH LUX is a new band formed by French composer, singer and multi-instrumentalist Steph Honde and Brazilian composer and drummer Fred Mika.

Both musicians had previously worked together in the band Sunroad.

In early 2023, Steph and Fred decided to form a parallel band focussing on melodic hard rock, but also incorporating some 70s influences.

Shortly after songwriting began, Fred contacted his German friend, singer, composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist Michael Voss (Michael Schenker Group, Mad Max, Casanova) to take over the bass guitar for Earth Lux.

And, close to the other musician partnerships, such as the British musician and producer Steve Mann (Eloy, Lionheart and also M.S.G.), who lives in Germany, for keyboards lines recordings, and the last member was completed by the Irish singer Robin McAuley (Grand Prix, Survivor, Black Swan and also M.S.G.).

A short time later, McAuley was suddenly called to rejoin M.S.G. as the definitive singer, replacing Ronnie Romero, who decided to leave the group to pursue a solo career.

Fred contacted another friend, American composer, singer and bassist Mark Boals (Yngwie Malmsteen, Ring Of Fire, Uli Jon Roth) to replace Robin (who had even completed one of the album’s lyrics). So by mid-2023, EARTH LUX was fully formed and hungry for the first album.

The album artwork was created by well-known British designer Tristan Greatrex, who has already worked for Lionheart, MSG, UFO and many other artists.

LINE UP
Mark Boals – vocals
Steve Mann – keyboards
Michael Voss – bass
Fred Mika – drums
Steph Honde – guitars
