Today, German heavy metal legends BLIND GUARDIAN are pleased to unveil ‘Ashes To Ashes (Revisited)‘, another single from the re-recorded version of their immortal 1992 breakthrough album Somewhere Far Beyond.

Somewhere Far Beyond Revisited, which was recorded in 2022 and 2023, is a refreshing and powerful tribute to one of the most influential albums in German metal history. It paved the way for BLIND GUARDIAN’s international career that is still going strong today and this re-recording impresses with all the class and quality these pioneers have been known and respected for since forming as Lucifer’s Heritage three decades ago.

Somewhere Far Beyond Revisited will be released on August 2nd, 2024 coinciding with BLIND GUARDIAN‘s triumphant return to this year’s edition of Wacken Festival, and a wide selection of physical variants is available!

‘Ashes To Ashes (Revisited)‘ is a brand-new, re-imagined version of one of the heaviest tracks in the history of BLIND GUARDIAN, combining aggressive thrash riffs and rhythms with majestic melodies. Originally inspired by the terminal cancer of his father, vocalist Hans Kuersch reveals his personal feelings in a highly intense manner. ‘Time isn’t here to stay‘ he sings, but this monumental track is meant to stay forever.

An epic live video of the song being performed at Hellfest 2022 can be watched below.

ABOUT SOMEWHERE FAR BEYOND REVISITED

Right on time with their show at 2024’s edition of Wacken Open Air, BLIND GUARDIANproudly announce the release of Somewhere Far Beyond Revisited on August 2nd which includes a complete re-recording of this classic as well as a live celebration of 1992’s Somewhere Far Beyond, a landmark record for Germany’s heavy metal titans. After three albums on No Remorse Records, it was the band’s major label debut via Virgin Records and opened threm doors to the Japanese market resulting in a wider availability and presence on the global metal scene. After finding the right balance of speed, heaviness, melodies, drama and irresistible choruses on 1990’s Tales From The Twilight World, Somewhere Far Beyond honed this approach to perfection, evolving further on a conceptual level and increasing BLIND GUARDIAN’s sonic range. On Somewhere Far Beyond the band experimented with keyboards, orchestrations, and folk elements, the latter manifesting in the group’s best-known song and live staple, ‘The Bard’s Song (In The Forest)’, whereas other tracks like ‘Ashes to Ashes’, the rapid ‘Journey Through The Dark’ or ‘The Quest For Tanelorn’ connected well with previous mostly fast-paced albums yet offered an additional push in dynamics.

Fast forward 30 years! Prior to releasing the much lauded opus The God Machine in September 2022, BLIND GUARDIAN had been performing Somewhere Far Beyond in its entirety at Rock Hard Festival and Hellfest in Summer 2022 in front of tens of thousands of fans singing along to each track. Both shows were filmed and recorded professionally and aired via WDR and ARTE. For the limited triple-disc-edition of Somewhere Far Beyond Revisited the Hellfest material was newly edited by the band’s long-time videographer Dirk Behlau using additional multi-cam footage. The idea of re-recording the album originated from the rehearsals for these shows as Hansi Kürsch explains in the detailed liner notes: “The original idea wasn’t to do a re-recording. When rehearsing for the anniversary gigs, corona hit and we couldn’t be certain that those shows would take place. We still wanted to celebrate the anniversary of the album and if we wouldn’t be able to include a live version, we initially thought we could at least record the rehearsals.” Not 100% satisfied with those rough versions, BLIND GUARDIAN decided to go all in, knowing the risk of being frowned upon by fans who consider re-recordings utter blasphemy. “We tried to recapture what we did in 1992 but compensate youth with skilful experience, though in a hungry way. We never discussed any major changes but with over 30 years of experience, and our current line-up, those ingredients already add a new flavour to it.” With the basic tracks recorded in a live setting, Somewhere Far Beyond Revisited is leaner and more focused on impact in terms of guitar arrangements yet retains all the harmonies and melodies essential to the original. “We finally ended up with this cool hybrid version”, André adds. “We combined how we play the songs today, but at the same time, really tried to retain that speed metal spirit of the early 90s!”

CHARLOTTE WESSELS Joined by SIMONE SIMONS for Third Single + Official Video ‘Dopamine’

Astonishing singer-songwriter CHARLOTTE WESSELS (ex-DELAIN) has joined forces with Simone Simons of Epica for her mesmerizing new single entitled “Dopamine”. This track is part of Wessels’ first traditional full-length, full-band solo album, The Obsession, set to be released on September 20, 2024 via Napalm Records. Promising a deeply immersive and evocative experience, the two Dutch symphonic metal legends guide listeners through the emotional landscape of SSRI-induced numbness. The Obsession showcases WESSELS‘ most mature work to date, blending progressive and heavier soundscapes with catchy elements.

Supported by her former Delain bandmates, who contribute to the album’s heavier sound, CHARLOTTE WESSELS is set to bring The Obsession to the stage this year. The journey begins with a release show on October 4, 2024 at Utrecht’s TivoliVredenburg, followed by a special guest appearance with label mates Kamelot and Ad Infinitum in Drachten on October 11, 2024. After these shows, Wessels will join VOLA on their Friend of Phantom EU Tour 2024, kicking off on November 1.

CHARLOTTE WESSELS on “Dopamine”:
“Lyrically, ´Dopamine´ deals with SSRI induced numbness that I experienced a few years ago when I was on Sertraline, a type of antidepressant. While the medication was really helpful, there were so many side effects that I’d never heard of. This song deals with some of them, and while it feels vulnerable to expose the experience, I hope it helps in breaking down the shame and taboo around the topic.
Simone reached out to me as I was first opening up about this in an interview, and when the first version of ´Dopamine´ dropped on Patreon (because of course we’re each other’s patrons) she texted how much she liked the song. So when we were working on the album version it only made sense to ask if she’d sing along on the track. I am so happy she agreed and after all of the shared introspection, it was great fun to let loose wearing pink wigs in ball pits and marshmallow pools for the video recordings. Musically, out of the entire new album, ´Dopamine´ went through the biggest transformation. What started out as an EDM demo for a collaboration with a dance duo that never happened, became an acoustic Song Of The Month on Patreon, which then had a massive overhaul when rearranging it with Timo. The new band version is an absolute banger, and the beautiful guest vocals by Simone complete the song.”

While still writing and producing the first incarnations of her songs in her Six Feet Under basement home studio and sharing them with patrons, now CHARLOTTE WESSELS is taking the songs off her new album The Obsession to the next level with a band of her fellow ex-DELAIN cohorts Timo Somers (guitars, additional arrangements), Otto Schimmelpenninck van der Oije (bass) and Joey Marin de Boer (drums) as well as Sophia Vernikov (piano/hammond), contributing to the new heavier sound. The album also features arrangements by Vikram Shankar (Silent Skies, Pain of Salvation), cello by Elianne Anemaat, was mixed by Guido Aalbers (Muse, Coldplay, The Gathering) and mastered by Andy VanDette (Porcupine Tree, VOLA, Dream Theater).

CHARLOTTE WESSELS about the new album:
“On the one hand, this album tells a very personal story – through its unintended theme of fear, obsessive thoughts and the escapes from them – and at the same time it represents the joy of finding the song’s true forms with everyone involved in the making of this record. That’s why I chose The Obsession as a title. It refers to my personal challenges with OCD that inspired many of the songs – but I’ve also started referring to the band as The Obsession – because there were moments in the studio with them that truly reminded me of why I’m obsessed with making music in the first place.”

Get your copy of The Obsession NOW

With thousands of monthly listeners on Spotify and a loyal fan base on Patreon, Charlotte Wessels has already made a mark with her earlier solo endeavors, Tales From Six Feet Under (2021) and Tales From Six Feet Under Vol II (2022). Now, she is taking her career to the next level with The Obsession. These compilations showcased her ability to blend various musical styles and deeply personal lyrics, earning her widespread acclaim. The Obsession is expected to build on this foundation, offering fans an even more immersive and powerful musical experience.

Themes like fear, obsessive thoughts and escapism run rampant on the album, presenting dark and heavy on songs like “The Exorcism”, “The Crying Room” and“Ode To The West Wind” (feat. Alissa White-Gluz/Arch Enemy). In addition, there are songs that offer a more upbeat approach to the subject – like “Dopamine” (feat. Simone Simons/Epica) which deals with SSRI-induced numbness, or “Praise” – which sings the gospel of needing external validation in order to feel anything. The reimagining of fan-favorite “Soft Revolution” won’t leave a dry eye in the room, while “Soulstice” and “Serpentine” present an unprecedented dark sensuality. Each song itself functions like an exorcism, an attempt to cast out a little of the fear it deals with.

CHARLOTTE WESSELS about the guests:
“I’m extremely grateful and proud to add Simone Simons and Alissa White-Gluz to the line-up of this album. They are creative powerhouses that I have so much love and respect for. Whenever we get to work together is an absolute treat and they really elevated the songs with their performances.”

DARK FUNERAL Share New Reworked Single ‘My Dark Desires (Re-Recording 2024)’

Posted by metalshockfinland on July 11, 2024
Posted in: Int. News, News. Tagged: dark funeral. Leave a comment

Swedish black metal stalwarts DARK FUNERAL are now celebrating three decades of blasphemy with a re-worked version of their debut album! ‘Dark Funeral (30th Anniversary Edition)’ is due on August 9 via Century Media Records and has been remixed by David Castillo and re-mastered once again by Thomas “Plec” Johansson. The band is now sharing the third offering from the record, “My Dark Desires (Re-Recording 2024)” along with a visualizer! The clip can be found at THIS LOCATION.

DARK FUNERAL has previously commented about the special edition, “In January 1994, Blackmoon (RIP) and I put our entire income and savings into a recording session and pressing 1,000 copies of our 4-track debut Mini-CD. A Mini-CD we released ourselves too. To now reach the significant milestone with an epic 30th anniversary is of course very honorable for me & the band. Three decades of Swedish Black Metal filled with precious memories. It is now time for us to reflect on what started it all, a 30-year epic journey, filled with experiences and an unbreakable bond. And in this honor, we have breathed new life into these legendary songs & given them an honest but modern update. Enjoy!“

In addition, DARK FUNERAL will be embarking on a U.S. tour later this year as direct support for GWAR! The trek will kick off on October 17 in Las Vegas, NV and will dominate the states until the final stop on November 20 in Nashville, TN. The full itinerary can be found below while tickets are on sale now.

Find rare material from the band’s ominous beginnings in 1994 — an ultimate rendition and must-have for devoted disciples of darkness! Pre-Order this exclusive collector’s edition HERE

BRAINSORE Release New Single ‘The Mangrove Diaries’ from Upcoming Debut Album

Posted by metalshockfinland on July 11, 2024
Posted in: Int. News, News. Tagged: BRAINSORE. Leave a comment

Italian death-grinders BRAINSORE have revealed the second single from their debut album “The Grip of the Naked Mind”. Stream “The Mangrove Diaries” at THIS LOCATION.

The band commented: “The lyrics are an hallucinated report of the events occurred on Ramree island in 1945, when Japanese troops, surrounded and overwhelmed by allied forces, had to retreat on a hasty escape through the inland saltwater crocs infested mangrove swamps, where hundreds ended up slaughtered. True or almost true, myth or reality, such tragedy inspired narrations of life and death, ghastly visions and vivid hallucinations, as the fight for survival carries on”.

The album will be released on August 2nd 2024.

When merited veterans of the Italian death metal and grindcore scenes conspire to breathe life into a new entity, you know you are in for a real treat.

Founded in Modena by drummer Don Gulag and guitarist Holy Father in spring 2022, the duo eventually recruited vocalist Horcrux Urethra (ex-Jesus Ain’t In Poland) and started focusing on songwriting and live activity, storming the stages all over northern Italy.

BRAINSORE
find themselves on the crossroad between grind, death metal, hardcore and general hysteria. With no compromises or no rules, the band push the boundaries for an intense and chaotic soundscape without losing their love for groove and subtle melodies.

Expertly wielding the fierce brutality and massive aggression of their genre, the Italians add intelligent songwriting, effective arrangements, and musical proficiency as well as unexpected elements to their sound.

Tracklist:

01. The Stinking Sinister
02. Sons Of Seznec
03. Harvest Red
04. In Life Is Coils

Orange County CA metal stalwarts LEATHERWOLF have released a video for the song ‘Nobody’ off their latest studio album, ‘Kill The Hunted’, available via N.I.L.8 in North America, Rock of Angels in Europe, Hellion Records in South America, and Rubicon Music in Japan. The video can be viewed on the band’s YouTube channel.

The clip was helmed by award winning Spanish director Eric Boadella whose credits include L.A. GUNS, BLACK SWAN, and REVOLUTION SAINTS and stars founding member/drummer, Dean Roberts, lead vocalist Keith Adamiak, bassist Brice Snyder, and the Triple Axe Attack of Rob Math, Luke Man, and David Coffman. “We had worked with Eric and his crew on our earlier videos for ‘Thunder (MMXXII)’ and ‘Only the Wicked’ and things went really well, on the set as well as post-production-wise, so it was a no-brainer to bring him in for ‘Nobody’ as well”, states Roberts. “I think this may be the best one we’ve done yet – it’s a no frills, in-your-face performance video that captures our live energy quite well.”

On the live front, LEATHERWOLF will be hitting the road in August and September for 7 shows, including 5 apperances with New York metal legends RIOT. “We are stoked to be teaming up with Riot for these shows – the fans are in for a real treat and a great night of classic American heavy metal!”, enthuses Roberts. “Hopefully this is only the beginning and we can take this package everywhere across the United States and Canada in the future. We are also doing a couple of headline shows in Arizona the weekend before we kick things off with Riot in Denver. We have not been out that way in a long time so we are looking forward to finally bringing the Triple Axe Attack back to the desert.”
