FUNERAL Announce Chilling New Album “Gospel of Bones”, Out October 18th

In the shivering, twilight-stained expanse of Norway, where frost gnaws at ancient stones and shadows linger under perpetual twilight, FUNERAL weave tapestries of sorrow. The band’s upcoming ninth album, Gospel of Bones, is a cavernous exploration of grief and resilience that’s bound to echo deep within the hearts and souls of the doom metal faithful. Every note of lead single “My Own Grave” is meticulously carved from the raw nerves of pain, loss and solitude.

Gospel of Bones comes out October 18, 2024 on Season of Mist. Pre-order & Pre-save: https://orcd.co/funeralgospelofbones

When the weight of the world presses down like the bows of a snow-laden fir, Funeral stand resolute. The Norwegian band are guardians of the melancholic spirit that defines funeral doom metal, marching to the somber tune of operatic vocals, crushing riffs and the relentless dirge of the band’s founder and drummer Anders Eek.

Gospel of Bones is a journey through the depths of despair. The album was produced by  the venerable Børge Finstad, who helped the enduring Norwegian band intertwine their intense, personal narrative of life’s mishaps with a wide-ranging vision that bridges the chasm between doom metal, folk-rock and classical music. This mournful soundscape is enhanced by the artwork of Tristan Diaz Bastie, drawing listeners into a world where beauty and anguish waltz in a tragic embrace.

“My Own Grave” is a harrowing scene of mournful splendor. Pounding drums, bowing strings, slow, chugging riffs and Eirik Krokfjord’s operatic baritone lock together in a perpetual dance between life and the inevitable shadow of death.

Melancholy. Pain. Loss. Solitude. Those had been just some of doom metal main themes ever since bleak pouring rain and the sound of church bell in the distance gave birth to the genre on BLACK SABBATH self-eponymous debut over five decades ago. But how many musicians have actually been bearing in their very flesh those gut-wrenching feelings?

Anders Eek – FUNERAL’s founding member, drummer and indisputable leader since 1991 – doesn’t particularly see it as a badge of honour, but he’d be the first to admit that somehow, the “death and loss we had to go through over the years were extremely painful yet inspiring, as a musician and as a human being.” And indeed, ever since their very first rehearsal in a basement in their hometown of Drammen, just outside of Oslo, Funeral had been ridden with problems and tragedy. Originally inspired by CATHEDRAL, CANDLEMASS, BLACK SABBATH, TROUBLE etc, they very quickly set out to create the most depressing and slowest form of doom/death possible at a time when their home country was being hailed as the birthplace of black metal. They went through several labels over the years, only to see them bust soon afterwards. Plagued by recurrent line-up problems, they even lost two of their key members Einar André Fredriksen (bass) and Christian Loos (guitar) in 2003 and 2006, respectively, to suicide and overdose.

But somehow, Eek never surrendered, but instead overcame all those obstacles by releasing over the years a slab of classics, each with its own, distinct personality, from the utter misery of the delicate yet none-so-extreme 1995 debut album ‘Tragedies’ to the more melodic and accessible 2001 gothic/doom masterpiece ‘In Fields Of Pestilent Grief’ or 2012 symphonic masterpiece ‘Oratorium’. Still, after the 30th anniversary concert in Oslo, april 12th 2022, also featuring the original singer Toril Snyen on the track «taarene», “life got in the way” as Anders puts it. “Some of us had kids, others moved out. Even I had quite a lot of things going on in my personal life and, at least for a while, maybe less drive to keep on carrying on the weight of the band on my shoulders. I never stopped writing music though because it’s something I’ve always done anyway.

2021 sees the band releasing Praesentialis in Aeternum (something along the line of “here eternally”) as a “natural progression. Guesting on  opening track ‘Ånd,’ the first single off the record, is Lars Nedland, Sindre’s own brother of BORKNAGAR and SOLEFALD fame. It’s also the first album for their new partner, Season of Mist.

In 2020 Eek started writing what was to become the album Gospel of Bones, to be released in October 2024.

In 2022 Singer Sindre Nedland was replaced by the professionally trained baritone opera singer Eirik Krokfjord (specialized in the works of Richard Wagner), known from both the Norwegian Opera Choir, as well as having several leading roles in operas both in Norway and abroad.

Violinist Ingvild Johannessen also joined the ranks, and the band moved away from programmed orchestration, and recorded all strings analogue.. This time around also incorporating the traditional Norwegian instrument the Harding fiddle, which is a key element throughout the entire upcoming album, moving the band slightly towards a more «folk» sound, combined with the classical opera-vocals of E. Krokfjord. Hopefully building bridges between both metal music, folk- rock and classical music.

Roughly 20 tracks were composed throughout the Covid pandemic(9 of whom made it to the studio), and yet again recorded and mixed at Toproom Studio, by Børge Finstad.

Violinist Øyvind Rauset, from the cult Norwegian folk-rock band FOLQUE, is performing on 2 tracks as a guest musician, as well as Espen Ingierd, with his very distinct singing-style in the vein of John Lennon, Michael Gira (SWANS)etc from cult doom/death band BEYOND DAWN singing on 2 tracks.

The album also contains an instrumental cover song , written by Kjetil Selvik, and is a melancholic piece only consisting of harding fiddle and church organ.

The lyrical content of the album is an autobiography of life’s mishaps of drummer/composer  A. Eek, and deals with real darkness, misery, pain and loss.  A Gospel of Bones.

WORMWITCH Unleash Vicious New Single ‘Godmaegen’ from Upcoming Album

Blackened speed metal entity WORMWITCH will unleash their eponymous fourth studio album on July 26, 2024 via Profound Lore Records! The Canadian necromancers are now unleashing the vicious third cut from the offering, “Godmaegen,” which can be heard at THIS LOCATION.

Wormwitch comments on the track, “This one was by far the most challenging to record. Major kudos to Izzy for not completely disintegrating while recording these drums. Everyone busted their asses on this and I like to think you can hear it come through.”

WORMWITCH sets out to combine a melodic blackened death assault with the ferocity and attitude of crust punk and classic rock and roll, jettisoning the burdens of ceremony and pomp that dominate the genre today.

The album can be pre-ordered in various formats HERE.

The cover artwork for Wormwitch’s eponymous record was created by Abomination Hammer and can be found below along with the tracklist.

Tracklisting:
01: Fugitive Serpent
02: Envenomed
03: The Helm And The Bow [WATCH]
04: Inner War
05: Godmaegen [LISTEN]
06: Salamander
07: Wormsblood Necromancy
08: Bright And Poisonous
09: Draconick Sorcerous Canadian Witchknights [WATCH]

Like black wings from an obsidian sky, WORMWITCH descended from the darkness in 2015, somewhere upon the rain-soaked woodlands of coastal British Columbia. Animated from the bones of several local punk and metal bands, the new entity set out to combine a melodic blackened death assault with the ferocity and attitude of crust punk and classic rock and roll, jettisoning the burdens of ceremony and pomp that dominate the genre today.

WORMWITCH released their first demo, ‘The Long Defeat’ in 2015, and shortly after signed to Prosthetic Records, under whom they released ‘Strike Mortal Soil’ (2017), ‘Heaven that Dwells Within’ (2019), and ‘Wolf Hex’ (2021). During that time the band toured with the likes of The Black Dahlia Murder, Suffocation, Midnight, Necrot, Uada, Bewitcher, and many others, earning themselves a dedicated cult following and international critical praise. In 2022, WORMWITCH struck out to independently release a string of singles and embark upon several tours of North America. After a busy festival season, 2024 saw the release of a six-song split with Atlanta black-thrashers Sadistic Ritual.

Now, with blades meticulously honed and tempered under the light of a feral Canadian moon, WORMWITCH emerges once more to offer their fourth full length record. Simply self-titled, “Wormwitch” is a statement of a band coming into it’s own – a revelrous celebration of devilish speed, searing melody and diabolical intensity.

Wormwitch Lineup:
Robin Harris: Bass, Vocals
Colby Hink: Guitars
Israel Langlais: Drums

Recording & Mixing: Michael Kraushaar at Little Red Sounds at New Westminster, BC
Mastering: Brad Boatright at Audiosiege
Guest vocals: Erlend Hjelvik (HJELVIK) on “The Helm And The Bow”

ANCIENT CURSE Sign with El Puerto Records, New Album Coming in Fall 2024

Posted by metalshockfinland on July 11, 2024
Posted in: Int. News, News. Tagged: ANCIENT CURSE. Leave a comment

The pirate label El Puerto Records followed in Störtebeker’s footsteps. They have now netted some very experienced prey: the prog power metallers from ANCIENT CURSE have signed a worldwide deal with El Puerto Records. The upcoming album will be released in fall 2024.

The band is sure: “We at Ancient Curse are totally happy to be part of the El Puerto family and are delighted to have the opportunity to release our new album and hopefully many more on this dedicated label with a team of individualists and scene connoisseurs. We put all our heart and soul into our music and in El Puerto we have found a partner who recognizes that. We are excited about what lies ahead of us on this joint path away from the mainstream!”

Labelboss Bernd Stelzer: “It is with great pride and pleasure that I can announce the power metal band Ancient Curse on board with El Puerto Records. I have known and admired the band since the 90s. The conversations we’ve had so far and the new album in the bag promise an exceptional release later this year!”

Biography:
The North Germans have been shining with convincing progressive power metal for almost 40 years. With the premise of “breaking new ground” (literally), the band achieved cult status in Cuba in the mid-nineties and were the first western band since the Beatles to actually tour there with their No.1 hit! Even though the band went noticeably quiet for a while, the new album – their second since 2020 – is even more impressive and multi-layered than its predecessor.
The professional standard also applies to the live performance: whether headlining or supporting (Brainstorm, Rage, Victory, Rough Silk, Tankard and many more), Ancient Curse have always managed to captivate the audience with their energetic live show.

Line-up:
Pepe Pierez – Guitars/Vocals
Gunnar Erxleben – Guitars
Matthias Schröder – Drums
Thorsten Penz – Bass

Italian Melodic Prog Rockers OZORA Drop New Single ‘Inedia’

Ozora, one of the most innovative and acclaimed bands in the Italian music scene, is thrilled to announce the release of their third single “Inedia” from their highly anticipated new album, set to drop this coming autumn.

The band comments on the new single:

“Inedia” is a 6-minute suite that expands the classic sound of the band towards new sonorities with progressive nuances, featuring energetic verses and a powerful melodic chorus. The track reflects on the perceptual alternation of certain life moments; the highs and lows we face. At times, it feels like “we can no longer read anything in the eyes of others…,” and this sense of endless tedium can either engulf us or awaken us.”

Following in the footsteps of their previous works, “Perpendicolari” (2017) and “Angelica” (2021), the eight tracks of the new album were recorded at the prestigious Fusix Studio under the expert guidance of Andrea Fusini, known for his collaborations with notable artists like Ready, Set, Fall!, Delain, and La Sad.

Ozora continues to amaze with a unique sound that skillfully traverses various genres including metal, progressive rock, and alternative rock, enriching them with new sounds and original arrangements. Their Italian lyrics, the instrumental complexities typical of the best progressive music, and the overwhelming energy of rock harmoniously blend to create an unprecedented musical experience.

This new work not only consolidates Ozora‘s reputation as one of the most interesting bands in the Italian music landscape but also marks another step forward in their artistic evolution. Ozora promises to take their fans on a fascinating and engaging sonic journey, confirming their ability to innovate and surprise.

Stay tuned for further updates and get ready to immerse yourself in the sound world of Ozora with the release of “Inedia” and their new album.

Femme Rock Queen ELOUR Presents ‘Fade’ Official Video

Posted by metalshockfinland on July 11, 2024
Posted in: Int. News, News. Tagged: ELOUR. Leave a comment

ELOUR presents the official video for “Fade,” a track from her hit album “Blood Running” on Epictronic.

“Fade” explores the transitory nature of infatuation, masterfully weaving themes of uncertainty and fleeting euphoria. With raw emotion and unapologetic energy, Elour paints a vivid portrait of the tumultuous journey through love’s highs and lows.

The stunning video, created by Iterate Designs, perfectly complements the song’s emotional journey. Edited by Keegan Burckhard, the video is a must-see for fans of captivating visuals and original storytelling.

ELOUR (pronounced “allure”) is what Elizabeth Ghandour categorizes as Femme Rock. Elizabeth’s direct lyrics, diverse background, and classically trained voice, combined with Ned Barclay’s soaring guitar, Joe Scarpellino’s tasty bass, and Ryan Vee’s creative drumming, yields a sound that’s raucous and rebellious, and yet very stylish.

I see my music as empowering for females because of my honesty. I think women often try to keep their emotions in check because it’s so easy to be called crazy or hysterical or to be seen as “too much” or too intense or aggressive, while males seem to get away with much more, without being labeled or ostracized. I like to lean into those labels and challenge those stereotypes by showing that there is strength in showing emotions, even if they’re emotions that are discouraged for women, such as lust, rage, or anger. “Good Girl” challenges the notion that women should suppress valid emotions to satisfy some external (patriarchal) version of “good.” “Reputation” and “Beautiful Girl,” each in their way, go further and recommend throwing off unhealthy, limiting societal chains.

I titled my album “Blood Running” after a lyric from the song “Ha.” The song displays the anger I felt after a relationship breakup, but underneath the anger was immense hurt. I was unseen and my pain and struggle didn’t matter. I feel it’s a bit of a female anthem because as females we are often dismissed or unacknowledged. We play so many valuable roles in a society that is still run by men. Our effort seems endless and often we are left feeling powerless. I hope that the album inspires people, and women especially, to find validity in all their emotional expression, and to claim their own power.

ELOUR is:

Elizabeth Ghandour: Songwriter, lead vocalist, rhythm guitar
Joe Scarpellino: Bass, backing vocals
Ned Barclay: Lead guitar
Ryan Vee: Drums
