Singer, musician, activist and cultural icon Mari Boine has unveiled her new single “Mu eadni”. The track is taken from Mari’s full-length ‘Alva’, scheduled for release on the 6th of September 2024 via By Norse Music. The arrival of ‘Alva’ is greatly anticipated, as it marks the first new album of Mari Boine with her band in many years!

Mari comments about the new single: “Mu eadni / Mother of Mine is a song of love and lament for the woman who gave me life, and for all women who suffer under systems that shame and subordinate them. As a Laestadian Christian, my eadni was bound by strict gender roles, and that insidious association of the feminine with sin. She was taught to be self-denying: that her highest purpose as a woman was obedience. (To males, naturally, all the way down.)

When her daughters resisted, she felt it was a personal failure. And yet, she was Sámi, with echoes and stirrings from a much older worldview, one that celebrated the feminine, that found purpose in reciprocity, not hierarchies. Sometimes, I feel her with us, free from shame, sharing our freedom. Smoothing our fringe. Adjusting our belts. Asking us to twirl.”

Biography Mari Boine

Singer, musician, activist, and cultural icon Mari Boine has long used her voice, musical or otherwise, to further her advocacy for the preservation of Sámi culture and identity.

From her exploratory debut Jaskatvuođa maŋŋá (After the Silence) in 1985, to the acclaimed and notable Norwegian-Grammy award winning Gula Gula (Hear the Voices of the Foremothers) in 1989, right up to the release of last year’s Amame with jazz pianist Bugge Wesseltoft, Mari Boine has consistently and proudly presented facets of Sámi life to her listeners. Now, with the release of Alva in September 2024, Mari aims to re-contextualise her activism for the wider Sámi community within the personal struggles she has faced on her way to becoming the resilient figure we see today.

On this album, Mari steps back towards her own roots, with songs like “Anárjoh’gáttis” (By My Beautiful River) offering glimpses into a childhood which she abandoned when she chose to leave behind a strict religious upbringing in order to pursue a life of activism and music. The poignancy of the record reaches an emotional high on the mournful “Mu eadni” (Mother of Mine), wherein Mari laments her own relationship with her mother. She is also found reflective on “Oainnestan” (Glimpses) when looking at the relationship she has with her son.

On Alva, Mari Boine seeks to find balance between a combination of difficult personal life circumstances, close relationships and her lifelong professional journey acknowledging her people and the many challenges indigenous people face. As she grew older and abandoned a complicated childhood, she also began to understand her true purpose and embarked on a prevailing, sometimes lonely mission of utmost importance – a mission to share the beautiful culture and histories of the Sámi people through music to people across the world.

Like so many people impacted by colonisation which we see throughout the world today and throughout history, the Sámi people (separated by Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia) have been oppressed and deprived of their distinct indigenous culture and language since the 17th century. Mari’s music aims to convey a sense of oppression and frustration, anger and sorrow, which stems from this history. On Alva specifically, a Northern Sámi word which translates to energy, stamina or willpower, Mari’s compelling use of traditional joik singing bores through layers of history, encouraging the Sámi young people to;

Bring out, breathe out the stories
that ask to be told
With your light feet
trespass the border of time

«Dánsso fal, mu vàhkaran» / «Keep on Dancing, Váhkaran»

There’s an emancipated energy that is also reflected in the music, soaring to new heights over vast imagined landscapes of the tundra of Sápmi / Northern Norway. Mari Boine’s evocative musical language vocalises the inseparable bond between the Sámi people and the natural world. In comparison to her last album Amame, which comprised a naked and fragile arrangement of vocals and piano, Alva reflects the “willpower” of its name and takes the listener on a musical journey of exhilarating momentum spurred along by a full band.

Mari Boine says that if she could “compose” her own life, she would have wanted to be who she is right now, only 40 years ago. “Right now I feel whole” she says. “As complete as I wanted to be in my whole life”.

Mari Boine has recently been introduced to a much larger audience through her appearance in the Norwegian reality TV show “Hver gang vi møtes” (“Every Time We Meet”), which invites artists of all genres to interpret each others’ music. Other artists on the show have expressed their deep respect for Mari Boine, and have commented how challenging her own music has been to interpret. About the experience she comments, “I have wiped away some tears,” says Boine about her participation in the TV show, but confirms that there was also a lot of laughter too.

DUN RINGILL return with the single and music video “The Crucifixion”. The track is featured on “150-Where the Old Gods Play Act 2”, the second part of the Swedish progressive folk/doom metal outfit’s conceptual double album. After releasing the first part, “Act 1,” in 2023, the band is now set to launch “Act 2” later this year on The Sign Records, with “The Crucifixion” being the first single.

In ”150 Where the Old Gods Play Act 2” the story kicks off strongly with this powerful song, “The Crucifixion”. The story progresses from ”The Last Supper”, which concludes Act 1. The epic music on this track is complemented by perhaps Tomas GG Eriksson’s best vocal performance ever. Follow the lyrics to see how the story connects.

CACTUS have released a new single “Parchman Farm” featuring special guests Joe Bonamassa & Billy Sheehan. The single comes from the upcoming album Temple of Blues – Influences & Friends releasing on June 7th as a CD and also as double vinyl album via Cleopatra Records. The new album merges the members of Cactus with a super ensemble of featured artists, all of whom have called the group among their biggest influences. Once heralded by critics as America’s answer to Led Zeppelin, Cactus recorded four hard rockin’ albums for Atco Records before Appice and bassist Tim Bogert left to form their own supergroup: Beck, Bogert & Appice.

“Cactus is still one of my all time favorite blues and rock bands. The perfect match of songs, fire and the ability to deliver it all live. They have always been pound for pound the most underrated American band of all time.” – Joe Bonamassa

About Cactus

The current line-up of Cactus came together in 2021. Lead vocalist Jim Stapley comes from England and had worked with ex-Faces/Who drummer Kenny Jones in the Jones Gang and Humble Pie. “Nearly five decades after I formed this band, the time had come to re-invent Cactus once again,” says Appice, who also still drums for Vanilla Fudge, The Appice Brothers Drum Wars, and a hybrid tribute to former band leader, Rod Stewart. Adds Appice: “The music remains the same and Cactus is still a ‘hot and sweaty’ band. The level, quality and consistence of the band’s musicianship is as strong as ever.”
Cactus has had a long and turbulent history. Formed in 1970 from the ashes of Vanilla Fudge by Carmine Appice and Tim Bogert, the initial line up also featured McCarty (from Mitch Ryder and The Buddy Miles Express) and Amboy Dukes vocalist Rusty Day. While Cactus saw success from the start and soon built a loyal fan base, by early 1973 the band had collapsed mainly due to lack of real support from its label and the fact that Jeff Beck was now ready play with Carmine and Tim in BBA.

The band reformed in 2006, three decades after the tragic death of Rusty Day with Randy Pratt on harp (who also appears on this album) and Jimmy Kunes vocals. When the late Tim Bogert was forced into retirement due to complications after a serious motorcycle accident, Pete Bremy joined on bass before Caputo replaced him in 2020.
Now, with a powerful new line-up Cactus and an album the marries the band with some of the biggest names in rock and blues, embarks on a new and exciting musical journey to the Temple Of Blues.

Saudi Thrash Metallers DUNE Unleash Blistering EP “Years Of Chains”, Out Now

Get ready to experience the raw power thrash metal, infused with cultural influences in the debut EP from Saudi Arabia’s DUNE. “Years Of Chains” clocks in at a succinct 18 minutes, with four tracks, each full of tasty riffs, engaging vocals, and a variety of metal elements that keep listeners engaged and offer something new every playthrough. The EP is a testament to the band’s relentless pursuit of heavy music with an aggressive feel and heavy melodies. DUNE shares their excitement for the release:

“Years of Chains” is an EP that we wrote years ago but didn’t get a chance to properly record due to multiple difficulties coming our way, after years we have chosen a list of the songs from the originals we have for the EP. The recording process was fun yet we looked for perfection to make the songs as we imagined them with the best quality that we could make.”

Known for their unique fusion of thrash metal with djent, nu metal, oriental, and groove metal influences, DUNE‘s sound is a sonic journey that defies traditional genre boundaries. The EP artwork represents the struggles that we all have, having parts of the lyrics from each song pouring into the skull head and then pouring from the eyes and mouth, a representation of struggles and spiral into madness and to a dark place.

“Years Of Chains” explores themes around culture, urban legends, and personal issues, providing listeners with a unique perspective on heavy music. DUNE‘s commitment to delivering an intense and fun experience with raging tones is evident in every track on the EP and is suitable for those who enjoy Testament, Slayer, Pantera, and Metallica.

VICOLO INFERNO Unleash Video ‘Suspended’ from Third Studio Album

Posted by tarjavirmakari on June 1, 2024
Posted in: Int. News, News. Tagged: Vicolo Inferno. Leave a comment

VICOLO INFERNO, one of the latest signings for Rockshots Records roster is proud to release their third studio album “Circles” today. Instinctive, energetic, melodic, dark, and intense, “Circles” is the quartet’s most mature and experimental recording to date.

“Circles” like its predecessor dances among various colors of the soul, from the most intimate and convoluted to the angry, to the amused and ironic. The track listing was chosen to guide the listener through a journey. The writing process for this record has been consolidated for years, although somewhat against the current.

“We are “romantic supporters” of songwriting in the rehearsal room. We always start from a vocal line or a guitar riff, and if there is inspiration, the first version is laid down, which is then refined and shaped over time like a piece of wood by a sculptor.” says the band. “It is said that the third album is canonically the one of awareness; it is certainly the one in which we put more care into arranging the songs, where we experimented with some stylistic figures never used by us before, both in music and in singing. For once, we would like to venture to say that we think it is our best album (although it is always difficult to say which child you love most) for ideas and execution, but as always, the hope is to reach the audience, which will be the judge in deciding whether our feelings hit the mark or not.”

The band describes this new single “Suspended” as a social critique stating that “The attention span of society for any content or experience is just a few seconds but our stories are too complex to be summarized in a few words.”

Recommended for fans of Alice in Chains, Black Sabbath, and Black Stone Cherry “Circles” is due out today and is available for digital platforms plus CD orders at https://lnk.to/vicircles
