HIGH DESERT QUEEN Drop New Lyric Video Single ‘Death Perception’ Feat. Emma Näslund

HIGH DESERT QUEEN drop the cinematic lyric video ‘Death Perception’ with guest vocalist Emma Näslund from GAUPA! This is also the final  single track to be taken from the forthcoming Texas desert rockers’ second album “Palm Reader”, which is slated for release on May 31 via Magnetic Eye Records. The album pre-sale is available at: http://lnk.spkr.media/high-desert-queen-palmreader

HIGH DESERT QUEEN have previously announced the first set of many planned live dates for 2024. Please see below for all currently confirmed shows!

“It was pretty crazy how ‘Death Perception’ came to life”, vocalist Ryan Garney writes about the new single. “This is one of three tracks that were incarnated during our first night in the studio when we were just jamming trying to get levels. Within a few hours, we had the song written and recorded. Rusty threw in a riff, he actually came up with on the fly during the last time that we were in the studio to record our first album. He had not played it since. After we had all the music recorded and I sat down to write lyrics, I immediately thought about how amazing Emma Näslund from Gaupa would sound on this song. She and I had talked about the possibility of her adding vocals to our record when we crossed paths a few times last year on tour in Europe. We also feel that her vocals are just too strong to be in the background and that she should be the main singer on her track. I enjoyed collaborating with her on melodies and lyrics, and I am extremely happy with the result. She us such an amazing person and vocalist, and I hope to work with her again in the future!”

The lyric video of the ultra-heavy track ‘Death Perception’ that vocally channels a bit of a Björk vibe courtesy of Emma Näslund is now streaming here:

HIGH DESERT QUEEN‘s sophomore full-length “Palm Reader” is bursting with raw energy and radiates the feeling of 666 diesel horses thundering loud. The album is crammed with cool vibes, ripping leads, and a ton of desert fuzz with a focus on great songs rather than trying to stay confined within a corral of a particular style.

This untamed attitude took its creative high energy source straight from touring. When the band from Texas returned home after six weeks travelling the roads of Europe with the legendary FATSO JETSON and watching them improvising jams every night, they had also taken notes. Although a bit worn from the road, HIGH DESERT QUEEN could hardly wait to start recording. Not focusing overly on how parts were played, allowing themselves imperfections, and ditching the click, the music started to flow like never before. In the very first studio session after the tour, three new songs emerged.

Working within a live framework and mindset, the band from Austin, Texas hit the jackpot and “Palm Reader” bears witness to that claim. In more than one way, HIGH DESERT QUEEN have always been a bit different and much more than ‘another desert rock band’. Formed in Houston, Texas by singer Ryan Garney and guitarist Rusty Miller in 2019, the duo soon recruited drummer Phil Hook (MONTE LUNA) and relocated to Austin in 2020.

With the addition of Rusty’s daughter Morgan on bass, the band hit the ground running. The lone star shone bright when these four got together as desert rock had already endured a long rather dry spell of stagnation and was parched for an injection of fresh sounds.

HIGH DESERT QUEEN had what it takes to kick the scene into gear again. Their vast musical influences ranging from grunge to funk, old school metal to doom and much more provide an ideal foundation for new ideas and a rejuvenating approach to the genre. Their thunderous, fuzz-drenched anthems are delivered with a healthy dose of groove and catchy melodies, and get a massive boost from an emotional intelligence in their music that’s hard to find. The newly-minted sound is linked to the rich heritage of their musical environment, inspiring the style tag ‘Texas desert rock’.

13 JUL 2024 Erfurt (DE) Stoned from the Underground Festival
26 JUL 2024 Neuensee (DE) Rock im Wald Festival
21 SEP 2024 Austin, TX (US) Far Out Lounge, RippleFest Texas

Hard work and their obviously burgeoning talent resulted in an fast rise for HIGH DESERT QUEEN, beginning with their first record deal arriving thanks in part to their being hand-picked by ZAKK SABBATH’s Rob Blasko. Their debut full-length “Secrets of the Black Moon” arrived in 2021 and was immediately heaped with praise in the US and Europe, which kicked the doors open to touring and invitations to prestigious festivals both domestic and abroad.  In March 2022, the Texans embarked on their first tour in support of SASQUATCH on the US West Coast. Only two months later, HIGH DESERT QUEEN hit the roads of Europe as a headliner in June 2022, with a return to the other side of the Atlantic with FATSO JETSON in 2023. Underlining the fast rise of this live monster, the newcomers were booked for Desertfest London (UK) and Berlin (DE) and the Truckfighters’ Fuzz Festival (SE) among many others.

Answering the exponentially multiplying requests for new material from their steadily growing following, HIGH DESERT QUEEN flanked their live activities with the “Turned to Stone Ch. 8” split release with BLUE HERON, and contributed a track to “Best of Soundgarden Redux”, the latest instalment of the bestselling Magnetic Eye Records Redux series.

With “Palm Reader”, HIGH DESERT QUEEN have made a quantum leap in their evolution as the Texans found the perfect balance between the well-loved legacy of the desert rock genre and carving out their very own path. Fuelled by the power and spirit of live music, this album rocks as hard and honest as can be done.

Tim “Ripper” Owens Takes MJM’s Hard-Rock Hedonism One Step Further with ‘Live It Up’

The hard-rock juggernaut known as MJM has more than enough party favors in their stash to throw one heck of a blowout. But that doesn’t mean they aren’t going to fling open their doors in welcome when a true legend shows up wanting to join in. Just cock an ear toward the room-shaking new remix of MJM’s most recent single, “Live It Up,” now with a killer lead vocal by esteemed metal mouthpiece Tim “Ripper” Owens.

Beloved by headbangers across the globe for his peerless wailing on the Judas Priest albums Jugulator and Demolition—and currently rocking the mic for fellow JP alumnus K.K. Downing in KK’s Priest—Owens has taken the time to lend his immaculate voice to a simply wild reimagining of the track that elevates its gleeful excess to a whole new level. With a throat full of razor blades and an unmistakable devotion to the cause, he hurtles  headlong into the song’s  admonitions to carpe the hell out of that fabled diem:

Life can change in a New York minute
It’s a battle, we’re in it to win it
Live it up, flying high, having some fun
Live it up, it’s a wild ride, as we circle the sun

“Live It Up” on YouTube and Spotify

This is hedonistic anthemry like they just don’t make anymore—a party number that stomps and struts as if there is still nothing but a good time. The classic, AC/DC-inspired riffing and huge chorus soar on the wings of call-and-response verses that fight valiantly for their own right to party.

To hear Owens tell it, he was more than happy to apply his leather lungs to the remake.

“I loved singing on it, and I love doing things that are a little bit out of the box for me,” he says. His final verdict? “A real fun and good hard-rocking tune!”

Having Owens along for the ride, even temporarily, is a major step in the upward trajectory of MJM guitarist and creative kingpin Michael J. Miller. Formerly the brains and fingers behind the cult metal acts Rapid Tears (whose albums Honestly and Cry for Mercy are now distributed by European label Sonic Age Records) and Adrenalin (heard on Dedicated, released by Germany’s Long Island Records), Miller founded MJM to better convey his keen musical vision. With a lineup that’s rounded out by bassist Zsolt Henczely, drummer Tom Eakin and vocalist Stephany Dudas, the Toronto-based quartet has released four full-length records of its own—three of them that balance lyrically poignant singles with guitar-based instrumentals, and a fourth that’s made up entirely of hard-hitting wordless explorations.

Their most recent collection, MJM IV—a loose concept album about the consequences of space travel—led into the more straightforward mayhem of “Live It Up,” which was produced by Tom Atom at TomAtom Recording Studios in Toronto and is now getting a new lease on life thanks to Owens’ amped-up reworking.

“The lyric concept is ‘life is short,’ Miller explains. “‘Live It Up’ is about having a good time and keeping a positive outlook on the challenges we face. We’re in it to win it!”

And MJM know something about winning, having earned Best Rock Song honors 14 times at the Akademia Music Awards in Hollywood. Over the past five years, they’ve also netted the competition’s Akademia Executive Award, Artist Vision Award, Rising Star Award and (both in 2022) its Outstanding Legacy Award and Rock Artist of the Year award. In 2023, the band was inducted into the Akademia Music Hall of Fame.

With a new album on the way, the success streak—and the party—look like they’ll never stop. Seize the day, and don’t forget to invite the neighbors!

UNEARTHLY RITES Premiere Debut Album “Ecdysis” Ahead of Release

Finland’s UNEARTHLY RITES are today premiering their debut album, Ecdysis, in full via Decibel. The death metal band’s cavernously old school approach to the genre on their first full-length sees UNEARTHLY RITES rallying against corporate greed and ecocide. Alongside the album premiere, the band has shared a string of live dates in support of Ecdysis – with more details below.

LISTEN TO ECDYSIS IN FULL VIA DECIBEL HERE.

Ecdysis is available on all streaming this Friday (May 3). Pre-order Ecdysis here.

Speaking on the premiere, UNEARTHLY RITES’ Santtu Markko (guitar) comments: “As the world is burning, prepare to die! Neanderthal riffs and sonic torture from the death metal caves of Finland. We’ll be supporting the album live on the following dates:

3 May – Bar Loose – Helsinki, Finland w/ Pestigore & Aedes.
4 May 4 – Vastavirta Klubi – Tampere, Finland w/ Sonic Poison & Disguised Malignance.
10 May – Nirvana – Turku, Finland w/ Frigid Winter, Below The Graves & Ruuhi.”

Ecdysis tracklist:
1. Hellscape
2. Deep Drilling the Earth’s Crust
3. The Master’s Tools
4. Ecdysis
5. Capitalocenic Nightmare
6. New Venus
7. Fuck Ecofascism
8. Sacrifice Zones
9. Doomed

Formed in 2020 through existing friendships in their native underground extreme metal and punk scenes, UNEARTHLY RITES’ members’ mutual adherence to DIY methods and principles of creativity and community resulted in a self-titled EP in 2021. As with their preceding release, Ecdysis once again saw the band record to tape with drummer Tapio Lepistö at the helm of the sessions at Black Floyds Analog Studio between May and September 2022. The ominously stark black and white cover also sees bassist Jennika Vikman once again take on art and logo duties.

At the beating heart of Ecdysis lies UNEARTHLY RITES’ insistence for a better world, with the perilous effects of capitalist interests taking precedence over nature and human life at the core of the group’s concerns. Through their collective work in environmental activism, including anti-mining campaigns in the arctic north, Ecdysis is less a despairing cry as it is a plea for change.

The band’s caustic approach to barbarically punishing death metal adds a feverish urgency to proceedings, with the rhythm section of bassist Vikman and guitarists Simo Perkiömäki and Santtu Markko evoking the genre’s most cavernously brutish traits against Sisli Piisilä’s visceral vocal delivery. Despite their rage and despondency at institutional apathy on the title track and the harrowingly doomy highlight cut Sacrifice Zones, album closer Doomed shuns inaction and resigned complicitly by directly challenging the listener to choose their side for humanity’s sake and future.

UNEARTHLY RITES is:
Sisli Piisilä – Vocals
Simo Perkiömäki – Guitar
Tapio Lepistö – Drums
Jennika Vikman – Bass
Santtu Markko – Guitar

Finnish melodic hard rock / AOR band Wake The Nations is back! The previous album Heartrock was released in 2019 via German AOR Heaven. The upcoming third album Heartageddon will be released on September 13th 2024 via Inverse Records. The Finnish label also released the band’s sold-out debut album Sign of Heart back in 2015.

The first single ‘Alive’ from the forthcoming album is released today and a rather personal music video has also been made for the band, replacing the guys with women. You’ll have to check it out here:

The band comments:
“Storyline behind the song takes us back all the way to 2016, when the first lines were written. Based on a true story including bungee-jumps, rollercoaster-like-emotions, and love (of course… what did you expect from a WTN song…mf´s). Like our drummer Tuomas said: “We really are in a good position as a band, because Gekko‘s style of writing lyrics and Risto‘s way of creating tunes is a match made in heaven.” Alive tries to answer the question, should one drive pedal to the metal all the time or hit the brakes at least in the curves?!?”

LISTEN Alive on streaming services: https://push.fm/fl/wtn-alive

Composed by Risto Tuominen
Lyrics by Janne Granfors
Single cover by Janne Granfors
