Jeff Kollman is best known for his heavy, melodic electric guitar playing, fusing elements of Jazz harmony and creating his own brand of Rock with his long running prog fusion trio, Cosmosquad, and as a member of Chad Smith’s Bombastic Meatbats. You can also catch him live with famed producer Alan Parsons (Pink Floyd, Beatles) with The Alan Parsons Live Project and in the studio or on stage with the likes of Japanese legend Eikichi Yazawa, Asia F.J.P., Steel Pulse, Chris Isaak, Jason Mraz, Lou Gramm (Foreigner), and producing rock legends Phil Mogg (UFO), Glenn Hughes (Deep Purple), and Joe Lynn Turner (Rainbow).

Now Jeff is set to release his latest album 2023 A.D. on May 17th which features a guest appearance by Red Hot Chili Peppers and fellow Bombastic Meatbats drummer Chad Smith on the first single “Tongs & Thongs”. As Kollman explains, “Well I wrote this song originally for our group Bombastic Meatbats. I decided to record it and feature the band including Chad Smith on drums for this recording. Chad has some great solo highlights on this tune. I told Chad to fill the holes.” Smith continues, “Tongs & Thongs is a ripper. I am honored to be part of the amazing Jeff “the bee” Kollman’s record. Crank it!”

Pre-save “Tongs & Thongs” here: https/push.fm/ps/tongs

The album also features Shane Gaalaas (MSG, Yngwie Malmsteen) Jimmy Johnson (Allan Holdsworth, James Taylor), Guy Allison (Doobie Brothers), Kevin Chown (Steelheart, Sebastian Bach) and Ed Roth (Robbie Krieger). Bassist Ric Fierabracci (Chick Corea) makes a special appearance on the bonus Vinyl track 1979.  Kollman continues, “I think that this album is some of my finest work in the sense that the songs flow together and there’s a contrast and depth in the compositions. It’s certainly my best sounding solo release. Having songs without vocals forces the writer to come up with music that doesn’t need lyrics to invoke depth of human emotion. I love that challenge as a writer. Many guitar instrumental records fall short on composition. There’s so much focus on lead guitar shredding and showing off. I like to paint a picture with many shades and colors to provide a feast for the sonic senses.”

The album boasts 12 tracks in all with 3 bonus tracks on the vinyl edition which is due out on June 21st.  It includes stand out songs like “Tribal Scream”, “Layers”, and “Battle Of The Bulge” which Kollman says about the latter, “This song has one of my favorite guitar solos. I worked this song up with Shane and Guy Erez (bassist for Alan Parsons). Good old rock riff song.”

NOCTICULA RESURGET Release New Album “Revenge”, Out Now

Posted by tarjavirmakari on April 5, 2024

Released today “Revenge”, the brand new album by Nocticula Resurget! Record available in digital format on all the best music stores and also in physical format! An album that will haunt you forever! Terror, macabre atmospheres etc etc, but above all, great technique, great sound and much much more…. Get ready to enter the world of darkness of Nocticula Resurget

Formed in 1994 under the name Nocticula from an idea of Boris Hunter, former drummer of Death SS, and Jacopo Orlando (Amok) bass and vocals, involving musicians Luciano Zella (Megerah Z) and Enrico Paoli (Angakok) on guitars in the project. They debuted with the demotape Nocticula containing four tracks, Creep shadows creep, Madness Network, No Nightmare, Hellhound. Unfortunately, 1994’s Nocticula had no way to perform live, and the project thus came to its conclusion within a short time. In September 2019 the project restarted under the name Nocticula Resurget. The only original member remains Boris Hunter, the role of the vocal bassist is split with two new members, the guitarists are also replaced. The band decides to reprise the songs from the 1994 demo but replacing the lyrics. Thus was born a collaboration with two Florentine writers, Iole Troccoli and Alberto Pestelli, who began writing a series of poems, later collected in “Another Sun, Another Moon.”

The eight poems are the basis for working out the lyrics for the old and nascent songs that will give birth to the concept album Revenge; a sadly well-known story of the witchcraft persecution of innocent young women. During the first phase of recording at the turn of 2020-2021, a lineup change occurs with the replacement of guitarists forcing the re-recording of guitar parts already done. During the writing of the new songs the band realizes that a female voice is also needed, so a friend of the band is contacted to play the role of Nocticula. After a year and a half of processing Revenge comes to light. During the post-production a friend of the band as well as the voice of Radio Facciamo Valere il Metallo Italiano who was looking forward to the work with strong curiosity passes away; for this reason the entire album is dedicated to the memory of Francesco Yggrasill Fallico.

The whole album is entirely self-produced, recorded in the band’s studio by Amok while editing, mixing and mastering was done at Samuele Sarti’s Wave studio in Fiesole (FI). Photographs for the album were also taken in the band’s studio set up as a studio for the occasion. Two of the new members adopt the name of the old characters Amok (on bass) and Angakok (on guitar), on vocals and second guitar the characters of Secutor and Ordnas are born, respectively.

Drums – Boris Hunter
Guitar, Backing
Vocals – Angakok
Guitars – Ordnas
Bass – Amok
Lead Vocals – Secutor Female Vocals

Finnish melodic heavy metal band Renegade Angel have released their new EP “Jokesters” today, April 5th 2024 via Inverse Records.

To celebrate this stunning EP the band released not one but two new music videos: Soldiers of Misfortune: https://youtu.be/Ii9y79Pnm2Q and captivating Cover of Meat Loaf’s Razor’s Edge which can be seen here: https://youtu.be/qosELaZeF5s

Earlier last year the band released eponymous music video to EP, Jokesters which is available here: https://youtu.be/X3X8ugHEEo0

Line-up is featuring Finnish guitar virtuoso Samuli Federley on lead guitars and Norwegian Power Metal luminary Marius Danielsen in the producer’s chair. Powerhouse vocalist Craig Cairns (known for his work with Induction and Tailgunner) takes the helm, promising a performance of unparalleled intensity.

The journey doesn’t just unfold; it bursts into existence with the addition of the previously released single, “Jokesters.” This track, already gaining traction in the metal community, sets the tone for what we anticipate to be an exciting EP experience.

But that’s not all. Renegade Angel raises the stakes with two brand new tracks. “Soldiers of Misfortune,” a powerhouse collaboration featuring vocal titans Eduardo Tavasci and David Hernandez, adds a new layer of intensity to the Renegade Angel sound.

The EP’s third track, a revamped and heavier rendition of a Meat Loaf classic, emerges as a duet, delivering a sonic punch that transcends the original. Infused with symphonic orchestration, this cover promises to be a grandiose and immersive musical journey.

Prepare for a melodic onslaught as Renegade Angel invites you to join them on this riveting journey. Follow them on social media for updates, and gear up for the EP release, poised to carve its name into the tapestry of metal history.

Jani Pöysä (songwriter) offers insight into the metamorphosis:

“Though the lineup has shifted, the core essence of Renegade Angel remains unaltered. Brace for an auditory voyage adorned with infectious riffs, monumental choruses, mind-bending solos, and our signature harmonies. Embracing both hard rock elements and darker nuances, this EP expands our musical horizons.”

Samuli Federley, the maestro behind the strings, adds,

“Contributing to this album was an exhilarating experience. The songs exude sheer potency, and I’ve poured my heart into crafting my best guitar work. Let’s unite as metal devotees and relish this sonic thrill together!”

HOUR OF PENANCE Stream New Album “Devotion”, Out Today

Italy’s brutal tech-death masters HOUR OF PENANCE are streaming their long-awaited ninth studio album “Devotion”, released today, April 5th via Agonia Records. Listen to the album in full below.

“It has been almost five years since Misotheism [last studio album], but we are finally ready to unveil our new opus,” comments HOUR OF PENANCE. “Devotion is our anthem to the futility of war, with no light at the end of the tunnel. The main theme of the album is the misguided devotion which we, the people, give to our leaders, who mercilessly send us to our deaths under the pretense of democracy; while being guided only by imperialist ambitions and greed. The faceless crowd of the artwork stands in worship of these deformed statues of false deities. Musically, the album builds on the 20-year-old, fast-paced trademark style of Hour of Penance, and enhances it with more technicality and catchiness, interspersed with epic landscapes.”

HOUR OF PENANCE is a blackened technical & brutal death metal outfit formed in 1999, widely considered as one of the most intense and talented representatives of the genre to emerge from Italy. The band needed three albums to surpass its local character and transform humble beginnings into international following, which triggered massive touring across Europe, USA, Canada, Australia and Asia, with heavyweights such as Cannibal Corpse, The Black Dahlia Murder, Devildriver, Deicide, Nile or Behemoth.

From early output, through trademark installments – “The Vile Conception” (2008) & “Paradogma” (2010) – up to 2019’s “Misotheism”, HOUR OF PENANCE has been consistent in crafting their sonic identity through a complex, crushing and surgical brand of death metal. Whilst tailored for hyper speeds and untamed brutality, the group doesn’t shy away from perceptive social metaphors in their dark imaginary and lyrics.

The new album “Devotion” features long-standing members Giulio Moschini (guitars), Paolo Pieri (vocals & guitars) and Marco Mastrobuono (bass), alongside new drummer, Giacomo Torti. Recordings took place at Bloom Studio and Kick Studio in Italy, with mixing and mastering handled by Hertz Studio (Vader, Decapitated, Behemoth) in Poland. New band photos were shot by Massimiliano Rocchi.

1. Devotion for Tyranny

NECROFIER to Play Two Shows with OBITUARY

Necrofier are riding one hell of a hot streak. Houston’s heaviest melodic black metal band kept the black flame burning on an especially Satanic 20th edition of the Decibel Magazine Tour. Upon returning home, they ignited their home crowd at Hell’s Heroes, alongside their label mates NITE and Rotting Christ.

This summer, Necrofier are adding more fuel to the fire when they join the legendary Obituary for two swampy shows in Dallas and Baton Rouge.

“It’s an honor to play a couple shows with these legends”, says Necrofier frontman Christian “Bakka” Larson, “Surely, everyone will be chopped in half!”

Necrofier 2024 US Dates Supporting Obituary
May 31 – Dallas, TX @ Trees [TICKETS]
June 1 – Baton Rouge, LA @ Chelsea’s Live [TICKETS]

Necrofier are also bringing total southern darkness to this summer’s festival circuit. Before they turn crowds inside out with Obituary, they’ll raise hell at Milwaukee Metal Fest with fellow SOM American black metal co-conspirators Profanatica. Come September, as temperatures start to drop, they’ll cast their all-seeing shadow over Full Terror Assault.

Deep within the scorching cauldron of Texas, the alchemists of Necrofier have brewed another potent dose of American black metal with their sophomore full-length, ‘Burning Shadows in the Southern Night.’ The Houston four-piece honors the time-tested virtues of traditional black and heavy metal, even taking an organic sonic approach, tapping seven-time Grammy-nominated producer and engineer Joel Hamilton (Unsane, Tom Waits, Tyler Bryant & The Shakedown, etc.) to lend his magic touch for a natural sound.

“The goal going into the new record was to start setting ourselves apart from our contemporaries,” explains Necrofier drummer Dobber Beverly. “One of those ways was changing what the record sounded like. Moving away from the clinical and sterile nature that most productions suffer from and back into a real room with real instruments and performances. Our friend and esteemed producer/engineer Joel Hamilton had expressed interest in venturing back into the metal world and offered to make the record with us at his facility, Studio G Brooklyn. The results will speak for themselves hopefully, as this record breathes and spits fire wherever it’s played.”

“Dobber and Joel have become good friends since they recorded the last Oceans of Slumber album with him, adds Necrofier guitarist and vocalist Bakka. “After that, Joel wanted to record something heavy, so we made the trip to New York City to record in his legendary studio. It was an amazing experience in a great studio; besides having all the gear, he also created an environment where we challenged ourselves and brought everything up to the next level.”

‘Burning Shadows in the Southern Night’ doesn’t just simply pick off where Necrofier’s debut album left off, but displays a conscientious effort to double down on the elements that made ‘Prophecies of Eternal Darkness’ successful. The solos are more plentiful and intricate, the hooks are more anthemic, and the overall musicianship is bolder and more daring. Speaking of the band’s evolution, Bakka explains, “I think this collection of songs represents us very well. We have grown together as a band and it shows in the new songs. Also, for this record we flew to NYC and recorded all day long for 10 days straight. I love recording this way because it captures a certain magic. The whole band is immersed in the process and it’s all we would think, do, live and breathe during the process.”

Another core facet of Necrofier’s allure is being a black metal band from Texas. “Where you live always helps shape someone,” says Bakka. “It helps shape our style and tone in ways, it’s hot most of the year, so as we burn, it gives us warmer tones and more of a heavy metal influence than when compared to our brothers from the North.”

To that avail, Necrofier isn’t your typical black metal band, and so this isn’t your typical black metal record as there’s a healthy amount of traditional metal influences, particularly within the guitar work. While conceptually, the band doesn’t heavily rely on Satanic themes, exploring deeper human philosophies and the occult like burning for your dreams or spiraling out on a psychedelic trip and exploring the beyond. “While there isn’t overt satanic worship in the lyrics, I would still say that he is a friend of ours,” Bakka cheekily says. “There are Occult themes on this record, but at the same time, it does take a philosophical approach.”

Further illustrating the influence of their environment, Necrofier also heavily explores one of Southern America’s most fabled myths. “The new record touches on selling your soul at the crossroads,” adds Bakka. “I like to take a different approach and touch on the elements of the esoteric world and dive into the forbidden or hidden that surrounds us in our lives every day.”

As the Texan black metal outlaws saddle up for record two, they are leading the charge as one of the contemporary purveyors of black metal revivalism. ‘Burning Shadows in the Southern Night’ is certain to elicit a sense of nostalgia for those who dare to lay ears on this vicious new offering.

IN APHELION Unleash New Single ‘When All Stellar Light Is Lost’

A new force is awakening, stretching the boundaries of consciousness, and devouring everything in its path. IN APHELION is now ushering in their sophomore album, ‘Reaperdawn,’ which is due on August 9, 2024 via Century Media Records. The black metal brainchild of guitarist/vocalist Sebastian Ramstedt (best known as guitarist and songwriter with Necrophobic) is now unleashing the dark and icy first single from the offering, “When All Stellar Light Is Lost.” The song can be found along with a blistering music video, which was created by Claudio Marino and Artax Film, at THIS LOCATION.

“This was the first song to be written after the last album,” says Ramstedt. “It’s a quite chaotic beast where the music matches the lyrics (written by former Necrophobic member Martin Halvdan) perfectly. Even though it’s a short track for IN APHELION, it gives the listener a taste of where the album is going. It is a first glance at a truly epic and violent album.”

Stream the single at https://inaphelion.lnk.to/WhenAllStellarLightIsLost-Single

Darker, stranger, more epic and progressive than admirers of his work were expecting, this new outlet for enigmatic and artistic expression emerged firmly tethered to the white-knuckle viciousness of benchmark, Northern European black metal, while also exhibiting a profound affiliation with both classic, traditional heavy metal and the black magic of psychedelic repetition. Based around a core line-up of Ramstedt (guitar/vocals), drummer Marco Prij (also Cryptosis), rhythm guitarist Johan Bergebäck (Necrophobic) and bassist Tobias Cristiansson (Necrophobic, ex-Grave…), IN APHELION have taken the uncompromising DIY route to their current status as new Century Media signees.

The atmosphere of “Reaperdawn” is a swirling maelstrom of obsidian sparkle and iridescent grime. Stay tuned to watch it arise!

The album artwork for ‘Reaperdawn’ was created by Sebastian Ramstedt.

During the bleak and desolate year of 2020, a new creative entity was born within the darkness. Necrophobic guitar duo Sebastian Ramstedt and Johan Bergebäck teamed up with Dutch drummer Marco Prij of Cryptosis to forge brooding and precise sonic hostility under the moniker of IN APHELION.

After releasing a number of singles, the ‘Luciferian Age’ EP (2021), debut album ‘Moribund’ (2022), and welcoming bassist Tobias Cristiansson to the lineup, the formation took the natural next step and have now joined forces with Century Media Records, which is already home to NECROPHOBIC and CRYPTOSIS.

For Fans Of: Dissection, Watain, Emperor, Sacramentum

Lineup:
Johan Bergebäck – guitars
Tobias Cristiansson – bass
Marco Prij – drums
Sebastian Ramstedt – vocals, guitars
