Sweden’s HORNDAL are today premiering their new single and music video, Calling: Labor, via Metal Injection. Calling: Labor is the second and final pre-release track to be taken from their forthcoming third album, Head Hammer Man, which is due for release via Prosthetic Records on April 5. On HORNDAL‘s latest full-length the band share the previously untold real life story of Alrik Andersson, a 1900s union leader from their eponymous hometown and his role in The Great Strike.

WATCH THE MUSIC VIDEO FOR CALLING: LABOR VIA METAL INJECTION HERE.

Pre-order Head Hammer Man here.

Speaking on the premiere, HORNDAL‘s Pontus Levahn (drums) comments: “People might consider HORNDAL to be a doom, death, thrash, or whatever type of metal band. But honestly, anyone who says they don’t like Judas Priest or Thin Lizzy is either a liar or an imbecile. Or both.

“Calling: Labor is about the story’s hero being forced into exile from little Horndal in Sweden to America, and what he stated during the interrogation at the emigration office at Ellis Island, New York. He wanted nothing more than a job and later became the Head Hammer Man at Columbia Steel in Chicago. What have I ever done? Nothing but stealing riffs from Mercyful Fate, I guess. Hail to the Head Hammer Man!”

Horndal, Sweden, 1909.
The Great Strike rages across the entire country. Local union uprisings are crushed one by one. But a small group stands defiant – the ironworkers of Horndal. A group led by 27-year-old Alrik Andersson.

The steel company’s struggle against the striking workers had led to starvation, famine and mass evictions of families – and was on the brink of sparking a civil war. Workers from all over the country traveled in solidarity to Horndal to fight alongside the unionized, against the Swedish military, who had been sent there with bayonets drawn. To avoid starting a war, the Prime Minister eventually ordered the soldiers to lay down their weapons and the company executives to stop evicting the starving families.

Alrik fought tirelessly for his fellow workers’ jobs, and was successful – but this came at a price. The company executives ensured that Alrik was blacklisted throughout Sweden, so that he could not find employment anywhere in the country. He was forced into exile and fled across the Atlantic on an overloaded ship with his wife and two small children. He ended up in Chicago, where he found work at a steel mill and was given the title – Head Hammer Man. He worked there until his death in 1970, never mentioning his life in Sweden to anyone. No one in Sweden, or even in Horndal remembers him.

Head Hammer Man is a tribute to Alrik Andersson, a chance for his story to live on, over one hundred years after he took a stand for the people of Horndal. His tale is woven throughout the most ambitious, inspired and expansive compositions that Horndal have created to date. Not only inspired by this one remarkable man, the band have drawn influence from all corners of their record collections. From Pugh Rogefeldt to Autopsy, Wipers to Judas Priest, Hawkwind to Mercyful Fate, Don Cherry to Voivod. A riff borrowed from Sparks here, a solo borrowed from Jake E Lee there. Brass arrangements alongside layered harmony guitars. John Barry’s The Persuaders theme next to King Crimson and The Jesus Lizard. Black Sabbath and The Shadows, Slayer and Sonic Youth.

The album was recorded in various locations across Sweden, including at the legendary Atlantis Metronome studios – including Swedish icons ABBA, whose very own grand piano is featured on Head Hammer Man. The album was mixed by Simon Söderberg at Mayfire Studio, and mastered by Magnus Lindberg and Redmount Studios. Horndal invited their good friends to add to the album’s sonic landscape; Martin Hederos (The Soundtrack of Our Lives etc) plays organs and Moogs, whilst Henrik Palm (In Solitude, Ghost, Viagra Boys) contributed two hair raising guitar solos. The Head Hammer Man himself even makes a cameo with excerpts from a speech included in the title track. History may have forgotten him but Horndal never will.

3. Exiled
4. Fuck the Scabs
5. Famine
6. Blacklisted
7. The Shining Specter

One man dissonant black/death metal unit KVADRAT has released the debut album “The Horrible Dissonance of Oblivion” today, April 4th 2024 in collaboration with Nuclear Winter Records, Desolate Depths and Total Dissonance Worship.

The album is now premiering in its entirety at THIS LOCATION.

In the span of 44 minutes, KVADRAT is unraveling a documentation of collective and individual downfall in the form of a musical work. A monument built to remind, provoke, traumatize and disturb, to fuel and awaken the nauseating sensations of uncertainty, alienation, hatred and pain. 7 chaotic compositions create images, sounds, shapes, scent, temperature, form and dimension to a world of meaninglessness, in an insane exploration for a purpose.

“The same song keeps playing over and over, same darkness, same horrors feeding of souls. Same heartbeat and agony, in an insane search for a different exit. Horrible images, nightmares, cacophonous voices, catastrophe, pain and violence, all gathered, feasting and, dancing around the fire. All life numbed and locked in the maze. Burying all will of staying awake, under the horrible dissonance of oblivion”.

Tracklist:

1. Υπόγειος Λαβύρινθος (Underground maze)
2. -4°C
3. Σηπτική Ανυπαρξία (Septic Inexistence)
4. Αμνησία (Amnesia)

Bask have taken us on quite a long, strange and head-banging trip. Ten years ago, the band came thundering down from the Blue Ridge Mountains with their heavy, heady and heartfelt vision on Americana.

Last year, the North Carolina psychedelic hard rockers gassed up for the first leg of their 10-year anniversary tour. This week, they’re keeping the good times rolling by making their triumphant return to Knoxville, where they last played with Pallbearer and Kayo Dot.

Once they’ve shaken that soot from their boots, Bask will ramble further south with dates in Georgia and South Carolina.

Bask 10-Year Anniversary 2024 Dates
April 6 – Knoxville, TN @ Brickyard Bar & Grill [TICKETS]
April 12 – Atlanta, GA @ The Star Bar [TICKETS]
April 13 – Savannah, GA @ El-Rocko Lounge [TICKETS]
April 14 – Charleston, SC @ The Whale [FREE SHOW]

Bask will play songs from across their wide-ranging discography, including cuts off their most recent release. ‘III’ was named one of the best records of 2019 by Metal Injection. Stream, download or purchase the album HERE.

‘III’ Tracklist:
1. Three White Feet (05:53)
2. New Dominion (04:28)
3. Stone Eyed (04:17)
4. Rid of You (04:40)
5. Noble Daughters I: The Stave (05:49)
6. Noble Daughters II: The Bow (06:16)
7. Maiden Mother Crone (04:40)
Total runtime: 36:03

Categorizing musical style often acts as a shortcut.  It allows us to quickly find what we think we’ll like and while defining a band by genre can be a positive for attracting new listeners, these barriers can also be limiting and may hinder our discovery of music that may inspire, embolden and provoke us.  Sometimes categories need to be broken and those limiting genre demarcations need to be shattered so that new musical expressions can emerge without limits.  North Carolina’s Bask is one of those special acts that transcend through even the most detailed categorizations in order to genuinely break new ground and take the listener on a journey of musical discovery that is acutely novel yet also warmly familiar.

Hailing from Carolina’s storied Blue Ridge Mountains, Bask was fully conceived in the fall of 2013 when guitarist Ray Worth, drummer Scott Middleton, bassist Jesse Van Note, and guitarist/vocalist Zeb Camp came together to produce sounds that were properly reflective of the lush yet rugged Appalachian habitat. The band’s newest record, ‘III,’ showcases a soulful juxtaposition of Americana rock ‘n’ roll with progressive and psychedelic elements, separating Bask from your average rock band from the South.

Since forming in 2013, Bask has released two formidable and critically acclaimed full lengths: “American Hollow” (2014) and “Ramble Beyond” (2017). The band has toured North America and Europe with the grammy award-winning HIGH ON FIRE and WEEDEATER, as well as other contemporary genre-challenging acts like PALLBEARER, KAYO DOT, ROYAL THUNDER and BLACK TUSK. The Carolinians have also successfully shared bills with a range of diverse artists, from GUIDED BY VOICES to CARCASS and even REFUSED. They’ve been featured on festivals such as Desert Fest Berlin and London, New England’s RPM Fest, Speedfest in the Netherlands, and Heavy Mountain in Asheville, NC.

Each song on ‘III’ is inspired by legend, folklore, or mythology, reexamining characters and situations that are often misunderstood, overlooked or requiring deeper introspection. “III” fervently embraces the natural world, the cyclical nature of our human experience, and grapples with the some of the hardships of those events and happenings that make us who we really are.

Bask’s sound has been described as progressive and cinematic, containing glimpses of their native region’s unique tonality and heartfelt heaviness; something they unequivocally prove with ‘III.’ While expertly crafted songs like the incredibly catchy “New Dominion” and the rockin’ “Stone Eyed” present a heavier dynamic from the band, tracks like “Maiden Mother Crone” and “Rid of You” serve up a melancholy elegance that showcases the band’s roots, adding to the record’s vast yet cohesive dimensions. “Noble Daughters II-The Bow” combines heavy groove with accessible classic guitar rock sensibilities and dreamy sonicscapes.  The diversity in the record is cognizant of the band’s wealth of influences and the songs are crafted so intriguingly that the listener is often eagerly awaiting what’s coming next.

“We just want to play heavy music from the heart.”
Scott Middleton, Bask

From the warm vocals and melodically homespun guitars of the opener “Three White Feet”, ‘III’ is sure to take the listener on an emotional journey through its many peaks and valleys. The record is something you just must hear for yourself to truly grasp both the depths and practicable complexities of Bask.  This is Americana.  This is soul.  And you simply haven’t heard this before.

From the depths of France’s extreme metal scene, BENIGHTED are resurfacing with their most psychologically thrilling album yet. Today, the band are releasing the third single off Ekbom. With its malignant chorus, “Metastasis” is bound to break necks.

Ekbom is out April 12 on Season of Mist.

“Metastasis” lives up to its name. Germinating from the dark, intricate production that fans have come to expect from Benighted, the band’s new single injects pure aural terror, cultivating brutal, blackened death metal into pure mental anguish.

“This song has probably the heaviest chorus on the entire album!” vocalist Julien Truchan says. “Time to break your neck! 🤘”

The beautifully gory video for Metastasis was produced & directed by Kick Your Eyes productions, who previously worked with Benighted in 2020 on their single “Nails”.

3. Morgue (3:22)

Dive into the darkest realms of the human psyche as BENIGHTED, the French purveyors of brutal death metal & grindcore, unleash their tenth full-length album Ekbom in April 2024. The madness that has defined their discography continues with this radical soundtrack to the twisted times we inhabit.

Born from French Death and Black metal bands DISHUMANIZED, DARKNESS FIRE, and OSGILIATH, BENIGHTED emerged in 1998 with a mission to explore a more brutal, heavy, and modern form of musical expression. The impact of their first self-produced and self-titled full-length album in 2000 transformed BENIGHTED from a side-project into a main act, quickly amassing a devoted fan base. Subsequent albums like Psychose (2002), Insane Cephalic Production (2004), Identisick (2006), and Icon (2007) further cemented their visceral, skull-breaking sound into extreme death metal history.

After a detour into the realms of Necrobreed in 2017, BENIGHTED celebrated their 20th anniversary by capturing the live madness with Dogs Always Bite Harder Than Their Master in 2018.

With Obscene Repressed, they once again took sadistic pleasure in pushing the boundaries of brutality, delving into the disturbed mind of little Michael. His relentless battle against demons, fueled by unresolved oedipal issues with his mother, provided a grotesque tableau for BENIGHTED‘s sonic butchery. Not content with merely slaughtering everything in their auditory path, BENIGHTED crafted thematically explorative pieces, each turn in their music revealing new layers of horror and despair.

As the relentless journey continues, BENIGHTED is set to unleash Ekbom in April 2024, an album that draws inspiration from the nightmarish ‘Ekbom syndrome.’ This rare neurological disorder, also known as Delusional Parasitosis, forms the thematic core of the upcoming release. A feeling of having a vile concoction of parasites, worms, and insects crawling under your skin is an apt description of what BENIGHTED have to offer on this newest release. The auditory assault mirrors the repulsive sensations of the syndrome, a visceral and unsettling journey into the abyss of the human mind.

Madness reigns yet again, this time intertwining with the haunting echoes of Ekbom syndrome. Brace yourselves for another mind-shattering chapter in the BENIGHTED saga as they continue to carve their niche in the putrid annals of extreme metal, leaving a trail of sonic disgust in their wake.
