To celebrate the beginning of their spring US tour, Maryland’s godfathers of heavy THE OBSESSED share their brand new video for “Stoned Back to the Bomb Age”, taken from their latest album “Gilded Sorrow” out now on Ripple Music.

“A formidable addition to their legacy and to the wider heavy metal canon.” Metal Hammer Magazine
“Gilded Sorrow is sludgy, serious, soulful, and oh so satisfying.” Big Takeover Magazine
“All the albums Wino has worked on are solid bangers, and Gilded Sorrow is no exception.” Metalsucks
“A welcome return from one of doom’s heavyweights.” Distorted Sound Magazine

Hot on the heels of the release of their long-awaited fifth studio album and Ripple Music debut “Gilded Sorrow”, the Maryland-based heavy legends present their brand new video directed by Sharlee Patches (also known for producing and directing the recent “Wino: The Documentary” movie).

Fronted by legendary guitarist and vocalist Scott “Wino” Weinrich, the return of THE OBSESSED after a seven-year absence also marks the expansion of the lineup to a 4-piece. More aggressive, straightforward and downright mean than ever before, their latest album was described by Wino as “the heaviest thing he’s ever done“, and already left its indelible mark on the 2024 heavy music landscape. New album “Gilded Sorrow” is available now on vinyl, CD and digital on Ripple Music.

Scott “Wino” Weinrich is a living legend. In a way, he is the American version of Lemmy and shares many traits with the late, much-beloved metal icon. He’s always been a rebel, loner and an outsider in an outsider scene, pursuing his music without regard for popularity or acceptance. In the process, he came to be considered one of the early pioneers of American doom. All of this began when he founded THE OBSESSED back in the 70s, then pursued through his many other outfits such as Saint Vitus or Spirit Caravan. As a key part of the 80s Washington/Maryland music scene, his music earned the respect of metal, punk and crossover fans alike while often being dubbed doom metal. Looking back, it was just gritty, street-wise American metal with a cynical bent and psychedelic flair, and this is what made him the unique and timeless heavy music icon he is today.

THE OBSESSED was formed in the late 1970s in Potomac, Maryland by legendary guitarist Scott “Wino” Weinrich (Saint Vitus, Spirit Caravan). The band spawned in the realm of musicians/artists such as Black Sabbath, Frank Zappa, The Dictators, and The Stooges. The earliest lineup consisted of Wino, bassist Mark Laue, guitarist John Reese, and drummer Dave Flood. In 1983, Wino took over vocal duties and the band became a three-piece to record the Sodden Jackal EP. The band broke up in the late 80s after Wino moved to California to join Saint Vitus. At that time, a German label, Hellhound Records, and the booking agency that had signed Saint Vitus, released The Obsessed, originally recorded in 1985, prompting Wino to reform THE OBSESSED. After multiple lineup changes, the band signed to Columbia Records in 1994 to release their third and final album, The Church Within. Despite highly acclaimed reviews, they would break up following the release, seeing Wino forming Spirit Caravan (then Shine) and other projects.

In September 2011, THE OBSESSED returned to the stage at Roadburn Festival with The Church Within‘s legendary lineup of Wino, Greg Rogers, and Guy Pinhas. The band played a few more reunion shows over the next couple of years, including Hellfest Open Air in 2012 and Maryland Deathfest XI in May 2013 with bassist Reid Raley. Wino announced the full-time return of the band iin March 2016 and the band’s official signing to Relapse Records to record the follow-up to The Church Within. The new lineup originally consisted of Spirit Caravan bassist Dave Sherman and Wino’s longtime friend and former road crew member Brian Costantino (drums). On October 31st, 2016, Wino announced a new lineup change, including Bruce Falkinburg (bass) and Seraphim (guitar), making it the first time the band had been a four-piece in over thirty-five years.

In 2017, THE OBSESSED unleashed Sacred, the band’s first studio album in over twenty years, further pushing the band into the annals of heavy metal history. After a few years on the road, the lineup stabilized around Brian Costantino on drums, Chris Angleberger on bass, Jason Taylor on guitar, and Scott “Wino” Weinrich at the helm. The iconic foursome is now ready to embrace this new decade in doom with their awaited fifth album “Gilded Sorrow”, released in February 2024 as part of their new collaboration with Californian label Ripple Music.

THE OBSESSED is:
Scott “Wino” Weinrich – lead guitar, lead vocals
Brian Costantino – drums, backing vocals
Chris Angleberger – bass
Jason Taylor – rhythm guitar

Melodic death metal band Swansong has announced a series of live shows through Finland for 2024 in support of their latest album “Awakening” (Noble Demon). Vocalist Jemiina comments: “Feels so amazing to finally get to play our favourite songs from our just released debut album ‘Awakening’! Our booking agent Ilkka Laaksonen from Kallo Agency is amazing and we can’t wait to see our fans this summer at Nummirock and Tuska festival! We have finally found our sound and we want to blast it around Finland! Pedal to the metal! See you at the gigs!“

15.03.2024 Ravintola Torvi, Lahti
30.03.2024 Lahtaamo Festival, Joensuu
20.04.2024 Hellsinki Metal Festival: SEE YOU IN HELL CLUB, Bar Loose, Helsinki
20.06.2024 NUMMIROCK FESTIVAL, Kauhajoki
30.06.2024 TUSKA Festival, Helsinki

About Swansong:
Combining the beautiful with the brutal since 2020, Swansong have never shied away from breaking boundaries. Drawing inspiration from the likes of Dark Tranquillity, 90s melodeath, death and black metal, as well as Shadow Of Intent’s modern sound, the band’s vocals are a force to be reckoned with. The composition of their debut album “Awakening” is heavily influenced by iconic bands such as Iron Maiden, Children Of Bodom, and the neo-classical metal of the 80s. These ingredients, combined with kick-ass riffs, will transport you back to the vibes of the golden era of metal, while the Finnish four-piece adds its very own new twist to these elements with low female death growls and high pitched screams.

Arjen Lucassen Reveals LUCASSEN & SOETERBOEK’S PLAN NINE Video for ‘Ice on Fire’

Lucassen & Soeterboek’s Plan Nine have revealed the fun new comic-book themed animated video for “Ice On Fire.”  The song is taken from the album ‘The Long-Lost Songs’ which will be released on 17th May via Music Theories Recordings / Mascot Label Group. You can watch the video for “Ice on Fire” HERE.

The song rockets its way out of the 80s and into the fresh faced 2024 with all the flamboyance, stadium sized melodies and insatiable chorus of many 80s rock classics. Talking about the song Arjen Lucassen says, “Howdy y’all! I’m proud to present to you the second Plan Nine video and single, Ice of Fire. It was very hard to pick a second single, because we love them all! So we had the label pick this one. As you can hear this track is quite different from the first bluesy song Before the Morning Comes. I think you’ll agree that this track sounds quite 80’s. Which is no surprise…  because we wrote it about 35 years ago! The clip is illustrated by Elan Lopez and edited by Dionne Mokkenstorm at Mascot Label Group. We hope you will enjoy all the silliness, have a real good time and let us know what you think!”

It was the early nineties, and musical polymath Arjen Lucassen had begun working on several projects: a solo album, a progressive-rock opera and a rock album. Around this time, he watched singer Robert Soeterboek perform live with Bodine, his former early-eighties heavy metal band. “His vocals truly impressed me, a rarity!” Lucassen recalls. “He had the charisma and power of singers like David Coverdale and Robert Plant. Discovering that we really got along personally, we decided to collaborate on some songs, just for fun.”

They would meet daily in Lucassen’s small ‘studio’ – a bedroom with a mattress and an old 8-track tape recorder. There, they recorded around 20 basic ideas. They brought in Peter Vink on bass, Cleem Determeijer on Hammond, and Rob van der List on drums, who has since passed away, and attracted interest from producers and labels. In the early-nineties Grunge landscape, landing a record deal was challenging. Some labels were interested but hesitated due to fears about being able to sell albums in the era dominated by bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam. Eventually, the repeated rejections wore them down. “I decided to start working on my rock opera project, expecting it to be the last musical thing I would ever do. My Final Experiment, so to speak!” Lucassen adds.

Fast forward to 2022, and they revisited those recordings. They recently revealed the first song from the album,  Before The Morning Comes. The album encapsulates a glorious treasure trove of 11 original songs with a loving 70s and 80s nod. It’s a blistering romp through the good time rolling rocker of “Let It Ride”, the Beatles-esque “Doctor Robert’s Medicine Show,” the bluesy groove of “Annie Moore,” the chugging glam stomp of “High-Speed Chase” to the 80s metal of “Ice on Fire”, whilst “The Preacher” would fit on a number of Arjen’s back catalogue records. The bonus disc features all the demos and some more newly recorded tracks.

Lucassen continues, “We wanted the best and most suitable musicians for this album who could tour with Robert. Koen handled the powerful drums. Rob van der Loo (Epica) laid down a solid bass foundation. The talented Irene Jansen delivered amazing backing vocals, as always. And, one of the world’s best guitarists, Marcel Singor, played the virtuoso solos with his immediately recognizable style.”

The Long-Lost Songs are lost no more. Plan Nine is reborn, giving the long-lost songs a second life!

Track List

01 Doctor Robert’s Medicine Show
02 The Preacher
03 Annie Moore
04 Get Down To Bizniz
05 Before The Morning Comes
06 High Speed Chase
07 Let It Ride
08 Ice On Fire
09 Long Cold Night
10 Drunker Than Whiskey
11 Die With Your Shades On
