PROFANATICA are at the vanguard of the first wave of American black metal. Founded and led by infamous master of black perversion Paul Ledney (drums/vocals), they have purveyed primeval blasphemy for nigh on thirty-three years.

Ledney formed the band from the ashes of the first INCANTATION lineup when he split and took with him all of the members sans John McEntee. That early trio of ex-INCANTATION members reeled off three ground-breaking demos of some of the most extreme and blasphemic metal of its time in rapid succession. The band flyers that permeated the tape-trading circuit were no less shocking and featured the trio bloody and naked and in the throes of what was most certainly a primeval summoning of some kind. In short order, they had inked a deal with the fledgling Osmose Productions for what became one of that labels first releases (Osmose release #5); a legendary split with Colombia’s MASACRE.

Something so volatile could only last briefly, and after another brief recording session the band collapsed under the weight of its own extremity. but the recordings made in this two year window went on to see dozens of reissues in the coming decades, in a testament to how formidable and formative they are to the black metal scene worldwide.

After almost fifteen years spent with his equally polarizing solo project HAVOHEJ, Ledney reignited the flames of PROFANATICA in 2006. Reemerging with a new deal from Hells Headbangers, Ledney and his new band released ‘The Enemy of Virtue’, a collection of that vaunted early material, and a new fulllength, ‘Profanatitas de Domonatia’. A triumphant return, ‘Profanatitas de Domonatia’ picked up right where these Kings of US Black Metal left off, delivering a savage stream of chainsaw guitars and relentless battery upon which they desecrated everything sacred.

This set-in motion another frenetic burst of work for PROFANATICA. The next decade saw them

unleash four new full-length albums of blasphemous perversions, sacrilegious incantations, and furious black metal. In addition, the band issued six mini-albums and EP’s, a full DVD of early footage, and began touring internationally in Europe and in Central and South America. For the first time PROFANATICA were appearing near or at the top of the bill at festivals like Maryland Death Fest, Messe Des Mortes, Hells Headbash, Prague Death Mass (Czech Republic), Chaos Descends (Germany), Black Sun (Spain), Tyrant Fest (France), SWR Fest (Portugal) and many more.

In fall 2018, PROFANATICA joined forces with Season of Mist and undertook their biggest tour to date supporting WATAIN and ROTTING CHRIST across Europe. And a year later, the trio vomited forth a most vulgar strain of black metal ejaculate with their SoM debut album ‘Rottng Incarnation of God.’

The band embarked on an extensive twelve-country European headline tour in the album’s wake. Shortly after returning home that winter, the world ground to a halt in 2020. Save a live-streaming concert production for the legendary Rock al Parque in conjuncton with BATUSHKA, little was heard from PROFANATICA.

That is until spring 2023, when PROFANATICA emerged from their den of iniquity on a European headline tour to promote a new album. ‘Crux Simplex’ is a ten-track offensive of sin and sacrilege, a nasty affront that bastardizes the first 10 stations of the cross. As per their legacy, PROFANATICA deals in bestial, first-wave black metal barbarity, and their eighth album unveils ungodly levels of bile and blasphemy.

Live Lineup:
Mayhemic Slaughter of the Heavens – Drums / Vocals
Destroyer of Holy Hymen – Guitar
The True Perversion of the Heavenly Father – Bass

KEOMA Release First Single ‘Contact’ from Upcoming Album

Hybrid Metal group Keoma, founded in 2008, has returned and released a new single called “Contact“. The single nicely combines joyful melody and the suddenly changing moods that the band has followed throughout its existence – a unique, original style breaking genre boundaries.

“The roots of the song are strongly in the 2010s, when we started working on this, but it was never finished. We recently went through demos together and the demo of this song rekindled our interest. I also immediately came up with the idea that the song could talk about today’s problem: Although technology makes communication easier between two people, communication still often seems more difficult than when you used to call your friends on a landline in the ‘are you coming out’ type of way.” Jasse Jatala, responsible for the band’s vocals and lyrics, describes.

Keoma has been working hard on their third album, which also marks the return of the original singer, Jasse Jatala, to the band’s line-up. The album is scheduled to be released later this year. By following the bands social media you will be on top of things to come.

“In 2019 I left the band due to many different coincidences, a moment later I realized that I had made one of the biggest mistakes of my life. The band had given me so much all those years and our friendship grew cold. In 2022 I got a call from my best friend, the band’s drummer, asking if I could come back and continue with a clean slate? Fate had taken the reins and I immediately said YES. Now, looking back, you can say that time also cleared the air and we are a more united band than ever – You can really feel and hear that on our upcoming album, which has no shortage of hit choruses, heavy topics about life, hooky riffs and a hypnotically captivating feeling.” Jatala sums up.

Keoma is:
Jasse Jatala – Vocals & lyrics
Jaakko Saloranta – Bass & backing vocals
Eero Saikku – Guitar & backing vocals
Jaakko Stenius – Guitar
Sampo Vesa – Synthesizer
Sami Lönnberg – Drums

Technical prowess and a barrage of speed come for you in the new two-track EP “Idiopathic Osteonecrosis of the Femoral Head” from Japan’s Impending Annihilation, out on April 19, 2024, on Gore House Productions. This onslaught of technical death metal leaves no survivors and pushes the boundaries of the genre. The band comments on this release:

“These songs represent the pinnacle of technical death metal for us. We wanted to create something that truly stood out in the genre, and so we crafted these tracks with a focus on rapid, intense instrumentation that utilizes super extended-range guitars and fretless bass. It’s an example of musical instrument work that will surely shock listeners.”

With the overarching goal of perpetual motion in mind, Impending Annihilation has crafted a sonic experience that refuses to stand still. Describing their vocal approach, vocalist Horizon points out that they don’t adhere to traditional lyricism in their music. Instead, they view vocals as instruments themselves, using growls and gutturals in the same way one would incorporate sweeps and tappings into a song structure.

Impending Annihilation strives to deliver performances that captivate and intrigue. Their compositions aim to defy common structures, embodying the essence of technical death metal while embracing the perpetual motion of their musical vision.

Blasting onward at an unyielding pace, full of strangeness and fury, “Idiopathic Osteonecrosis of the Femoral Head” is innovative and impressive. It is recommended for fans of Monumental Torment, Archspire, and Entrails Eradicated.

Opium Death is a brutal concoction of extreme metal, sent forth from the suburbs of Chicago, USA to lay waste to metalheads around the world with their first full-length album “Genocidal Nemesis”, which is being unleashed on April 19th. The band comments on the connection between the music and the lyrics:

“Lyrics and music go hand in hand. So far we noticed that as we wrote a majority of the lyrics last, the tonality of the songs and how they flow from beginning to end definitely had us think of certain sentences or phrases to be sung in a relative and consistent manner with the chords and rhythm. Or the lyrics can give off such a feeling of tension or melancholy or whatever that the music now has to serve that purpose or it may feel disjointed if not thought out very well.”

The album features a diverse range of tracks, each offering a unique sonic experience while maintaining Opium Death‘s signature heavy sound. From the blistering aggression of “Genocidal Nemesis I: Fear” to the haunting melodies of “Shattered” to their latest single “Ozymandias” being offered before the album officially drops, all promise to leave a lasting impact on listeners.

“Ozymandias is about pride and wrath and the importance of keeping them in check during your life against the inevitable decay of information over time. One of our longest songs on the album, we felt it was a track that could benefit from utilizing exotic scales and vocal layering as it comes up later in the song to bring up this sense of immortality to a concept that will forever be ingrained in our human ego.”

Coming from different musical backgrounds, each band member shapes their perception and interpretation of heavy metal. With “Genocidal Nemesis”, they’ve embraced their diverse influences to create an album that defies expectations and pushes the boundaries of the genre. It is recommended for fans of Dying Fetus, Death, and Gojira.

New Zealand’s DEVILSKIN Unleash Riveting Cover of Heart’s Classic Hit ‘Barracuda’

Prepare to be swept away by a tidal wave of raw power and adrenaline as multi-Platinum-selling New Zealand rock icons DEVILSKIN unleash their latest musical masterpiece: a heart-pounding cover of HEART’s timeless classic, “Barracuda.” With their unmistakable blend of ferocious energy and unparalleled musicianship, DEVILSKIN pays homage to the legendary rock anthem while injecting it with their own signature intensity and passion.

Originally released by HEART in 1977, on their third studio album Little Queen, “Barracuda” has long been hailed as one of the most iconic tracks in rock history. Known for its infectious guitar riff, soaring vocals, and unforgettable chorus, “Barracuda” continues to resonate with audiences of all ages. DEVILSKIN’s cover of “Barracuda” pays homage to the original while infusing it with their own unique style and energy, resulting in a rendition that is both timeless and fresh.

Lead vocalist JENNIE SKULANDER’s powerhouse vocals ascend over the epochal chugging riff, harmonics, and shimmering, layered guitars courtesy of NAIL VINCENT, and thunderous fusion of father and son rhythm section PAUL (bass) and NIC MARTIN (drums), capturing the essence of the original while adding a modern edge that is distinctly DEVILSKIN. From the opening notes to the explosive climax, DEVILSKIN’s cover of “Barracuda” is a masterclass in rock reinvention, showcasing the band’s unparalleled talent and passion for their craft.

“This is one of those songs that so many people have tucked away in their favourites and for good reason too – the song is a masterpiece! We hadn’t played it live for a few years, but we all still felt a sweet connection with it. So we thought we’d have some fun, and record it as a bonus for our faithful, and of course, to honour our musical heroes. Releasing ‘Barracuda’ for us, is like a gift back to our audience and the really amazing people we’ve had the good fortune to meet over the years. It’s a thank you, from the heart.” – PAUL MARTIN

Devilskin formed in June 2010 in Hamilton New Zealand and features the spectacular Jennie Skulander on lead vocals. Her powerful and compelling voice and alluring stage presence sets her apart from any vocalist New Zealand has put up so far. With an unerring gift for melody, Jennie’s incredible voice sweeps from whisper to roar, rips with power, drips with melody and captivates with sincerity.

Jennie previously fronted Rotorua band Slipping Tongue garnering a swathe of fans with their videos, EPs and album. Slipping Tongue also impressed many when they opened for Coheed & Cambria in 2008.

On lead guitar is Nail from the popular Waikato band Chuganaut who won the NZ Battle of the Bands and the World Battle Of The Bands in 2004. Played BDO in 2005 and opened for Iron Maiden at Mt Smart stadium in 2009. Chuganaut has played numerous national tours and released several singles, EP’s, videos and an album. Nail’s searing guitar work and high energy performance bring real intensity to the live show.

Paul Martin is the founder of the popular radio show, the Axe Attack. Lead guitarist and vocalist for World War Four, Paul’s previous bands include Knightshade and Blackjack. He has opened for Black Label Society (2006), Heaven & Hell (2007) and Motorhead twice (2008), and played BDO (2009). Paul’s powerful and aggressive bass style is a propulsive force in the Devilskin sound.

Nic Martin joined Devilskin as drummer in August 2011 at the age of 15. Paul’s son, Nic is the youngest artist to ever play the BDO when he performed with World War Four in 2009 at the age of 13. Nic adds to the show with a real display of power and passion on the drums.
With a fierce style all his own and the inexhaustible energy of youth, Nic’s truculent style and showmanship are fast becoming a talking point on the NZ live music scene. Not to mention making Devilskin one of the few bands featuring a father and son in their line-up.

Together, Devilskin have the ability to write songs that have depth and passion. They create a compelling and irresistible sound and perform a stunning, explosive, live show. The art of song-writing is back.
