Chilean ATER to Unleash Volatile New Album “Somber” on April 19th

Posted in: Int. News, News. Tagged: ATER. Leave a comment

Monolithic Chilean extreme metal band ATER will unleash their long-anticipated sophomore album, ‘Somber,” on April 19th with Torque Records. The South American band’s follow-up to 2018’s ‘Eternal Gray Spiral,’ is a cataclysmic melding of black, death, progressive and thrashing groove for one of the year’s devastating heavy metal records.

Commenting on the impending record’s release, ATER states:

“We are extremely excited to finally reveal our new album ’Somber’. After hard years in the making, we have completed our vision. ‘Somber’ represents a new chapter for ATER, as you are about to see. We have found our sound with ‘Somber’ and we are thrilled to finally release it. We cannot wait to bring this new music live to as many audiences as we possibly can. We have created something unique blending our influences into a new sound that we don’t know how to label yet. We are interested to see what people will name our sound and what sub-genre of metal we will be related to. For the artwork of this album we have worked with the fantastic Erik Kirchner, who captured the world of ‘Somber’ better than anybody could. Hope to see you all on the road!“

The band has debuted the crushing new single “Ignis Immortalis.”

Stream “Ignis Immortalis“: https://ditto.fm/ignis-immortalis

ATER adds about the single:

“We have selected ‘Ignis Immortalis’ as the first single from our new album ’Somber,’ because it represents where we are as a band today and encapsulates well what the album has in store for our listeners. This track is special to us, as it was the first collaboration between main writer Fernando and guitarist Josh. After writing it over the span of almost two years, Fern came up with a demo of the song and after presenting it to the band, Josh took it and wrote all the lyrics and melodies.

Fernando comments:
¨This was a challenging song to compose. The first half of intro and fast black metal section was written early in the writing process of ‘Somber’. It was very difficult to come up with music to follow after those sections and it took me over a year to finally figure it out. Once it was done, Josh was very inspired by it and surprised us all with all the lyrics.“

‘Somber’ Tracklisting:

  1. Striges
  2. Descending
  3. Somber
  4. Through The Portal
  5. Igris Immortalis
  6. Shrine
  7. Sæculi Fine
  8. Solitude

About ATER:

ATER is an enigmatic band that was born in Santiago, Chile in 2010, out of the mind of Fernando Bühring @fernando.ater. Originally named ¨Aeons Collide¨ to later be re-named ¨ATER¨ in 2013.

ATER went on to become an international band lead by funding member, Chilean multi-instrumentalist Fernando ¨Feroz¨ Bühring.

After meeting at a Meshuggah show in Los Angeles, days after the release of their debut album ‘Eternal Gray Spiral,’ ATER was joined by the talents of Josh “Sol” Seguin and Stephan “Kalani” Seguin, playing guitar and drums, respectively.

With a new lineup and a new vision, Fernando took the lead on songwriting for their new album titled ‘Somber,’ combining sounds from black and death metal to progressive and heavy Meshuggah-inspired syncopated grooves. Pushing the boundaries of the instrumentation by bringing the tuning down to low earth-shattering frequencies, all topped with demented-sounding low growl vocals, reminiscent of bands like Septicflesh, Hate and Belphegor, plus the heavy ambience and clean sections that became ATER´s signature with the first album ‘Eternal Gray Spiral.’

‘Somber‘ was recorded during the Covid pandemic and was mixed by Fernando in a temporary studio in Mexico City where he was quarantined during restricted times. The album was then mastered by non other than Ted Jensen of Sterling Sound (Mastodon, Gojira, Korn).

Tagged by fans —who already have seen them live— as “Blackened Thall,” the new album ‘Somber‘ can be described as one of the heaviest, darkest and most extreme works ever created in metal. Every song on the album carries a story, creating an immersive experience for the listener from beginning to end, thanks to the album’s clever songwriting, unique structuring and heavy, dark ambience.

ATER’s sophomore album ‘Somber‘ is ready to see the light in 2024. The band worked closely with renowned artist Erik Burton Kirchner who created the artwork for the album. He managed to portray the darkness of the music and brought the entire work to newheights.

HAMFERÐ Release ‘Hvølja’ Video + Single from Upcoming Album

“Hvølja,” the chest-caving new single from Faroe Islands-based death/doom practitioners HAMFERРis now streaming alongside an accompanying video. The punishing new hymn appears on the band’s Men Guðs Hond Er Sterk full-length, set for release on March 22nd through Metal Blade Records.

When this magisterial sextet’s third album Támsins likam emerged in 2018 – ten years after they first entered a rehearsal space – the highly acclaimed and powerfully emotive opus thrust the mourning-suited band onto the world stage. Louder Sound crowned the record, “a stunning triumph,” Heavy Music HQ concurred lauding a, “tour de force for the band,” while Nine Circles observed, “HAMFERÐ taps into a rich cultural vein to draw influence for their lyrical and musical themes, yet the filtering of this through the lens of death/doom makes for a unique approach to folk-themed metal, and one that is hugely successful in its application.”

Six years on, the accumulation of plentiful live experience and interpersonal chemistry has had a profound impact on HAMFERБs extraordinary fourth LP, Men Guðs Hond Er Sterk, feeding into the artisanal sonic vision of guitarist and producer, Theodor Kapnas.

Concertedly eschewing all the quick-fix trickery of modern recording technology, the band recorded the songs together live in the studio, without a click-track. The result is a resoundingly human album that heaves, swoops, and shifts in elemental style – from passages of glacial post-metallic beauty through sorrowful folky goth cadences, via icy blackened blastbeats to shuddering vistas of extreme doom mastery – with a crackling tight-but-loose interplay recalling the giants of yesteryear.

In addition to the old-school recording set-up, guitarist and producer Theodor Kapnas’ vision for the sound is best exemplified by penultimate song and latest single, “Hvølja” (Whaleskin), a sluggish sludge crawl with a beautifully disgusting tone. “I had a big fascination with making stuff rougher, dirtier and uglier,” affirms Kapnas. “Musically it’s all about tension; suspended chords and tense harmonies, always having that feeling of uncertainty. That song is maybe my favorite track on the record, just because it’s so uncompromising. Everything goes to 11.

“‘Hvølja’ is also the darkest and ugliest song we have written to date,” he continues. “It is a sonic and lyrical representation of the world being violently ripped apart by monstrous currents and consumed by a black sky above.”

Watch HAMFERБs previously released video for “Ábær” at THIS LOCATION.

The narrative concept behind Men Guðs Hond Er Sterk is inspired by the 1915 whaling disaster off the Faroe Island village of Sandvik (home of HAMFERРkeyboardist Esmar Joensen), when fourteen men died driving whales ashore in the stormy bay. The village population witnessed the tragedy from the seaside.

The sad tale has enabled HAMFERРto powerfully bring to life the meaning behind their Faroese name, zeroing in on the traumatic emotional force behind this supernatural phenomenon. “When you see someone in hamferð, you see their apparition,” Kapnas explains. “Mostly it’s wives with husbands at sea, who’ve seen them dripping wet in the doorframe in the middle of the night. Typically, in folklore it’s a warning that something bad will happen, and there are several documented episodes of this happening in Sandvik in 1915. So it’s kind of full circle for us.“

For more than thirty years, fans of symphonic melodic metal act Rhapsody Of Fire have been able to rely on one thing: there’s nothing half-hearted about this band. The Italian masters of their craft can look back at an impressive catalogue of 14 studio albums, three EPs and two live recordings to date, all marked by lots of heart and soul, passion and a virtually inexhaustible wealth of ideas. Since 1993, mastermind and founder Alex Staropoli has been hailed as the creator of the film score metal genre and his band as one of the most charismatic acts worldwide. In addition, Staropoli has enlisted a highly creative first-rate guitarist in Roby De Micheli, who joined the fold in 2011, contributing lots of gritty metal riffs and virtuoso solos to contrast the band’s symphonic orchestral style.

Their upcoming studio album, ‘Challenge The Wind’, is slated for a release on May 31, 2024 via AFM Records, the pre-sale has started today at: https://rhapsodyoffire.bfan.link/challenge-the-wind

The album will mark Rhapsody Of Fire‘s most fast-paced rager to date. “Compared to all previous Rhapsody Of Fire releases, the current album consists exclusively of up-tempo numbers, not a single ballad in sight,” reveals the composer and keyboardist. “None of our other records have featured as much pure, unadulterated metal as ‘Challenge The Wind’!” Give ear, today, Rhapsody Of Fire are premiering a music video for their new single, the album title track!

‘Challenge The Wind’ was produced by Alex Staropoli and mixed by Seeb Levermann (Orden Ogan), who is responsible for the homogeneous sound of the ten songs’ elaborate arrangements. Finnish modern melodeath powerhouse NUMENTO drops the debut single from their upcoming third album with a music video. ‘The Solipsist’ is an aggressive track that introduces Numento’s heavy and unique sound, combining brutal screams and eerie melodic singing. The song’s story is centered around a protagonist trapped in his imaginative realm, where he sees himself as omnipotent in solitude, mimicking others but comprehending only his own existence at the epicenter of everything.

SULDUSK Celebrate “Anthesis” Album Release with Music Video for New Single ‘Mythical Creatures’

Today, March 1, Melbourne-based dark folk/blackgaze project SULDUSK will celebrate the release of their much-awaited, sophomore studio album, Anthesis, due out via Napalm Records!

“Magical, emotive, and utterly dreamlike in execution – be they dreams or nightmares – SULDUSK enrapture the listener to follow them down the musical well with Anthesis. It’s the type of album that you can close your eyes, turn up the volume, and completely immerse yourself in,” writes Dead Rhetoric. Dark Art Conspiracy says “‘Anthesis’ feels like an incredible fight between light and darkness; when the hazy bleakness starts to consume, the light and beauty shine through and always prevail, making for a captivating and cathartic experience which perfectly captures the ethos of the album’s title, with Anthesis meaning to bloom.” Metal Temple rates Anthesis as a 10/10 Masterpiece, and New Noise Magazine suggests “Imagine blackgaze filtered through an eerie folk aesthetic—or Chelsea Wolfe collaborating with Deafheaven—and you’re most of the way toward the sheer beauty expressed throughout this record.”

In support of SULDUSK‘s critically-acclaimed new album, today, the Australian act is premiering a music video for their latest haunting single, “Mythical Creatures”!

Band mastermind Emily Highfield comments:
“We are so pleased to finally release Anthesis!

This album extends the path laid down by Lunar Falls, but having a full band beside me now emboldened me to be braver in the musical and emotional terrain we explored.

Mythical Creatures is a song dedicated to those brave folk who are cutting their own path.
The clip was directed by Joe Betros and features headpiece and other incredible art by The Obtainery – an artist who creates designs from recycled materials and nature.“

Following their much acclaimed 2019 debut album, Lunar Falls – an album that already stunned listeners and international press alike, Anthesis continues where SULDUSK left off with their transfixing first full-length, yet proves musically more complex. The album will take you into a gloomy, magical world where the up-and-coming act combines a high variety of dark and extreme sounds within its very own sonic universe.

While SULDUSK started as a one-woman project founded by the highly talented Emily Highfield, for the upcoming album, she recruited incredibly talented musicians to help elevate the vision of their acoustic-based music to the level of an intense, powerful and heavy record. On Anthesis, SULDUSK shines with dark folk, blackgaze, post-rock, prog, doom and even black metal elements – flowing together to create one very unique synthesis of sound. Emily’s voice is a strong highlight, impressing with softness and fragility at times, and turning over to demonic screams in the very next moment! For the first time in SULDUSK’s young history, there are also male vocal harmonies contributed by Shane Mulholland.

Anthesis was produced and mixed by Troy Mccosker, and was mastered by Thomas “Plec” Johansson (Soilwork, Opeth, Katatonia). The album also features guest appearances of Raphael Weinroth-Browne (Leprous) and Rachelle Harvey on cello. SULDUSK are more than ready to embark on another journey into the depths of primeval forests, where emotions are hidden under the thickets to reveal what’s not meant to be seen. The album is a stunning and enthralling masterpiece – highly recommended for fans of Myrkur, Oathbreaker and Chelsea Wolfe – and one that unconditionally needs to be seen, felt and heard!
