XORSIST Share New Single ‘Distorted Shapes’

Swedish trio XORSIST has shared a new single, titled Distorted Shapes. Distorted Shapes is the third and final pre-release track to be taken from the group’s forthcoming sophomore album, At the Somber Steps to Serenity, and showcases the band adding experimental production techniques to their Stockholm death metal sound. At the Somber Steps to Serenity is due for release via Prosthetic on October 6.

Stream Distorted Shapes via Apple Music, TIDAL, Deezer, Bandcamp and Spotify.
Pre-order At the Somber Steps to Serenity here.

Speaking on the single release, XORSIST‘s Alphonse Bouquelon (drums and backing vocals) comments: “For this final single we went slightly experimental with the production regarding the vocal department, which is mostly performed by Birk (Castenmalm, vocals and bass). Many recording takes that are in the final track were things that occurred either by chance or improvisation in the studio, such as atmospheric yells and backing vocals where Gustav (Ryderfelt, vocals and guitars) and I join forces, or voices, if you will.

“To us, this track is a representation of our new attitude toward the recording and the production of our music, which can be felt throughout the whole album.”

Following their self-released debut album Deadly Possession in 2022, XORSIST caught the attention of the Prosthetic Records with their old school approach to and affinity for Sweden’s death metal legacy and history. Founded by Gustav Ryderfelt (vocals and guitar) before cementing their line-up with both Birk Castenmalm (vocals and bass) and Alphonse Bouquelon (drums), XORSIST’s core sound is one rooted in deep reverence for the genre’s roots as much as it is a spirited progression of the raw and uncompromising Stockholm sound.

Seeking to continue their working relationship with the legendary Sunlight Studios (Dismember, At The Gates, Entombed, Grave and more), XORSIST once again opted to retain Tomas Skogsberg on co-production duties with Iñaki Marconi (Soen, Sepultura, Carcass). XORSIST’s proclivity for musical tradition is not mere homage so much as it is a graceful carrying of the genre’s torch. Having built up a glowing reputation in the Swedish underground by fans new and old, At the Somber Steps to Serenity sees the young band ensure the old school Swedish death metal torch continues to burn brighter than before for the fabled city in which they reside.

At the Somber Steps to Serenity tracklist:
1. A Life in Vain
2. Carve It Out
3. Blessed By The Divine
4. Imitation
5. Coterie of the Depraved
6. Banished to Obscurity
7. Distorted Shapes
8. Grace
9. Darkened Wings
10. At the Somber Steps to Serenity

RED ELEVEN Unveil New Heavy, Complex + Beautiful Single ‘Distant Waves’

RED ELEVEN once again redefines their musical boundaries with their third single, “Distant Waves.” The song simultaneously evokes feelings of confusion and admiration, and is an excellent fusion of complexity, djent-influenced riffs, and progressive rhythm, all while maintaining subtle melodic sensitivity. The combination of raw emotions and delicate melody creates an enchanting paradox that will have you listening to the song again and again, discovering new layers with each listen.

The vocalist of the band, Tony Kaikkonen, explains the message of the song:

“The song is about ‘awakening.’ It’s about realizing how many things that we take for granted may actually be something entirely different in reality. As a sub-theme, it references people’s selfishness and pursuit of self-interest without caring about the outcome.”

Distant Waves” is released with a visually stunning music video directed by Arto Kettunen. Kettunen mentions that the vision for the video came to him while watching the Smurfs. The video was filmed at the home of Petteri “Spöde” Vaalimaa, the bassist of RED ELEVEN, in Varkaus.

INFERNO FESTIVAL 2024 Announces Black Metal Bus Sightseeing Tours with Anders Odden

Posted by tarjavirmakari on September 15, 2023
Posted in: Int. News, News. Tagged: INFERNO METAL FESTIVAL. Leave a comment

In conjunction with Inferno Metal Festival, the Black Metal Bus Sightseeing Tour with Anders Odden (Cadaver, Celtic Frost, Order) is back with an all new routing! Following the success of this special event’s inception last year, this incredible experience will take Inferno attendees through some of the places that marked the beginnings of Norwegian black metal!

Between 1991 and 1993, many of the most important events during this dark chapter of Norwegian music history took place in Oslo. Therefore, Inferno Metal Festival has put together a field trip to experience these legendary moments in time, including the site of Helvete, the legendary record store once owned by late Mayhem founder Øystein “Euronymous” Aarseth.

Anders Odden formed his first black metal band, Slaught, in 1986 after attending a rehearsal with Mayhem at the age of 14. He was one of the pioneers of the Norwegian scene, dealing with tape trading, organizing of concerts and creating extreme music of his own. He formed Cadaver in 1988, releasing what would be the first Norwegian death metal album on Earache Records in 1990. During this period, Odden performed alongside true Norwegian legends such as Darkthrone, Mayhem, Old Funeral and many more iconic bands.

This field trip has exclusive anecdotes and personal memories of the early life of the scene from someone who was there since the beginning. The daily sightseeing schedule is as follows:

BLACK METAL BUS SIGHTSEEING – A FIELD TRIP THROUGH NORWEGIAN BLACK METAL

12:00: Departure The Hub, Inferno Festival hotel.
12:30: Langhus station – Photo op – IYKYK
13:30: Visit to NESEBLOD RECORDS the site of “HELVETE” 1991-1993
15:00: Holmenkollen Kapell, re-done after church-fire that took place on August 23, 1992

DOPELORD Unleash New Album Single ‘The Chosen One’

Posted by tarjavirmakari on September 15, 2023

October 6, 2023 will see Poland’s doom metal giants DOPELORD release their colossal fifth studio album “Songs for Satan”, issued by Blues Funeral Recordings. Following a previously-released first track, “Night Of The Witch”, and a recent tour as special guests of VADER, today the Warsaw-based four-piece is presenting their new single “The Chosen One”!

Having paved the way for Polish doom metal for over a decade by sticking to their strictly DIY ethos and hard work, mighty foursome DOPELORD is about to open a new chapter of its history by joining the coveted ranks of US label Blues Funeral Recordings (Acid King, Dozer, Lowrider, Dead Meadow).

Their fifth full-length “Songs for Satan” is a moment of critical mass for DOPELORD. A blast of devil worship in the riffing realms is nothing new, and while they aren’t the first band to openly embrace the motif, their amplified heresy is uniquely triumphant, their fuzz-drenched apostasy genuine and glorious.

About their new single, the band reveals:
“The song is about being delusional and thinking god/devil is speaking to you directly while you’re probably a highly disturbed person.”

Not only does their forthcoming offering, “Songs for Satan”, showcase the band’s equal mastery of lumbering plod and silvery hooks, it also more importantly mines Polish Catholicism’s decades of oppression for lyrical fuel. Tracks like “Satan’s Call,” “The Chosen One,” “One Billion Skulls” and “Worms” are pointed in their defiance of the church’s cultural dominance, even while managing to be contagiously singable at the same time. Maybe the extremity of their position will lead a few listeners to question their beliefs and examine the church and religion’s role (whether in Polish society or elsewhere) like a strong push to open a door. The voice of rebellion is crucial, and DOPELORD’s shout is unmistakable.

Calling to mind Electric Wizard, Windhand, Belzebong and Acid King, “Songs for Satan” is DOPELORD’s apex, an iconoclastic milestone for stoner doom that rumbles the earth and shakes our figurative foundations. It will be available on October 6th, 2023 in various vinyl editions, limited digipak CD and digital. The ultra-limited deluxe edition will be shipped a few weeks prior to PostWax subscribers.

TRACKLIST:

  2. Night Of The Witch
  3. The Chosen One
  4. One Billion Skulls
  5. Evil Spell
  6. Worms
  7. Return To The Night Of The Witch

Rock and roll’s history with Satan goes back to before there even was rock and roll. A blast of devil-worship in the riffing realms is nothing new, and Warsaw, Poland’s DOPELORD aren’t the first band to openly embrace the motif. Even so, their amplified heresy is uniquely triumphant, their fuzz-drenched apostasy genuine and glorious. The band coalesced in late 2010 in the city of Lublin, Poland, where three of the soon-to-be-band’s members attended university. Merging members from two previous groups and pulling inspiration from classic cult films, 70s rock, occult themes and magical herbs, the quartet set its sights on stoner doom before the style had taken much hold in their country.

DOPELORD released their debut Magick Rites in 2012, a record that flaunted their love of vintage heavy rock and proto-metal, which The Sludgelord noted for its “huge unstoppable riffing in every song.” 2014’s Black Arts, Riff Worship & Weed Cult was a leap forward in songcraft, and as the band got serious, they began touring abroad in Western Europe, the members also completing a relocation to Polish capital city Warsaw. Critically-acclaimed 2017 album “Children of the Haze” found their formula for drawn-out psych-sludge behemoths perfected, as confirmed by The Heavy Chronicles, which proclaimed, “Nothing will be the same again. There used to be doom, now there is Dopelord.”

As if heralding the actual end times, fourth LP “Sign of the Devil” arrived on March 10, 2020, just as the covid-19 pandemic took terrifying hold of the planet and called the knowable future of humanity into question. Supremely confident in their infectious bludgeon and thematic overtness, DOPELORD presented a record that stepped more fully than ever into both melody and rebellious iconoclasm. Naming “Sign of the Devil” their album of the week, Worship Metal cheered it as, “a torrent of ear-pleasingly suffocating riffs which crush all in their path,” adding, “Satan would be pleased.”

Derailed from their aggressive live schedule for two years, DOPELORD blasted out the “Reality Dagger” EP in 2021 before setting to work on their boldest statement yet. On October 6th, 2023, their fifth album “Songs for Satan” will induct the mighty foursome as one of Europe’s heaviest and most faithful doom purveyors of the new era, crushing everything on their path under the Blues Funeral Recordings banner.

WHITECHAPEL Release Music Video for ‘Without You / Without Us’

Knoxville, Tennessee’s Whitechapel just released a new music video for the instrumental track “Without You” that leads into the track “Without Us” off the band’s 8th studio album Kin. The video was shot and produced by David Brodsky of MyGoodEye Visuals and can be seen here.

Here’s what guitarist Alex Wade has to say about the video for “Without You/Without Us“:

“We are excited to release our final video from the Kin album cycle for “Without You/Without Us”. We worked with longtime friend David Brodsky and MyGoodEye Visuals on bringing this epic battle to life and feel it is a great way to close this album as we begin work on our 9th album.”

Lyrics to Without Us
Come to the surface my son, you’re not breathing so well
I couldn’t stand to lose you another time
But this is not real, we’re not here
Don’t you understand that we’ve already lost one another
Please accept reality so I can finally be free

Where will we be in the years to come
I know somewhere inside you is me crying out for help
But I’m right here with you begging you to see the hell we’ve created
I know it’s hard to accept the truth but it’s time to let this all go
Let this all go

I’m holding onto your neck
It’s taking everything in me to not watch you fade out
Into the sound of nothing
But this is not real, we’re not here
Don’t you understand that we both have to move on together
Without you, there’s no me
There’s no us, there’s no family

It’s so dark
It’s so quiet now
Is there anyone out there
Anyone
I’m alone again, just what I’m used to

I’m here
Bow to the ancient god
The portal is shut, locked, no way out
This is home
This isn’t home, it’s hell with a lovely face
The mask just hides the truth can controls our fate
Take a look around, my friend
That part of our life is dead

So tell me, where will we be in the years to come
I know somewhere inside you is me crying out for help
But I’m right here with you begging you to see the hell we’ve created
I know it’s hard to accept the truth but it’s time to let this all go
Let this all go
