When you invent your own genre, you can make the rules, and in space, no one can correct your math. If Wormhole’s excellent The Weakest Among Us was 50% tech death and 50% slamming brutal death metal, their Season of Mist debut is a veritable leveling up of the Baltimore-based act’s trademark “tech slam.” It’s the kind of record that can scramble your brain and give your neck a nice chiropractic workout; Almost Human feels like the future of extreme metal, dropped down from either outer space or delivered by Nintendo cartridge (more on that later).

So, what the hell exactly is “tech slam?” Well, the gleefully amorphous and unholy term comes from an ethos that guitarists Sanil “Noni” Kumar and Sanjay Kumar discovered and perfected over (probably) thousands of hours of Metroid and Doom games, as well as, you know, actual musical mastery. Almost Human, out September 22, 2023, is more powerful, more agile, and more confounding for pie-chart-enthusiasts than anything else that came before it. The sequel is always bigger, darker, and in this case, covered in much more pixelated space horror viscera. My Wormholio calculator puts their sound at 91% tech and 89% slam, with an increase in awesome stats somewhere in the 420% range. There’s also a clear emphasis on amplifying their dissonant death influence, the kind of eerie melodies that feel like being stomped on by Samus.

There’s a clear balance to everything on Almost Human: the songs are more adventurous while also being instantly memorable. No two songs sound alike, and that diversity in songcraft (level design?) sees Wormhole pushing and pulling along their tech and slam dials to figure out what’s best for the song; spoiler, it’s always riffs. What also becomes evident after repeated listens is how carefully the Kumar brothers understand a sense of place, humor, and a consistent vibe. This is still the same band that’s known for throwing on Saturday morning cartoons, and Almost Human continues to hammer home that Wormhole the musical entity is deadly serious, but the guys that make tech slam are not stoic creatures. There’s a warmth and sense of joy when chatting with them that only gets brighter when you ask their favorite Metroid game (that’s a question for a live show). So, what is this vibe they are chasing? Sanjay shares:

“The tech slam imagery is based on Metroid lore, Doom lore, and we haven’t written a song about it yet, but Alien as well. Those three things are brutal sci-fi universes, so we’re trying to embody that sound. The slam riffs, you can connect the brutal killing of stuff with the brutal chunky riffs; that’s been a match that’s existed since the nineties. So that’s the slam part, and then the tech part was harder to fit that vibe, so we kind of do it differently. I lean into very dissonance-vibe stuff, like Artificial Brain and Dysrhythmia. I think disso-death and heavy, they aren’t usually paired together, even though they should be.”

“And then as far as chasing the vibe,” Noni adds, “I kind of go about it two ways. With the Metroid soundtrack or universe, that vibe, there’s some dark and gloomy atmosphere, but there’s a lot of pretty imagery as well. We wanted to find a way to match that very pretty, kind of out-there sound cohesively in songs with a very aggressive and guttural approach.”

Like another famous sci-fi horror masterpiece of a different media, Wormhole’s shifting, amorphous style is perfectly suited to blend in and amaze just about any fan of heavy music. That’s The Thing: they can pull off whatever they want, but it’s always boiled down to that tech slam vibe. Do you like tech, melody, breakdowns, atmosphere, or dissonance? Tech slam can fill whatever void you seek.

If previous albums were early generation, lower-resolution visions of tech slam, Almost Human is the 4K reboot, where you can see every pixel of terror and awe. Wormhole are absolutely ready for their closeup. Prepare your worms and your holes, tech slam is here to stay.

Today, Danish-Swedish powerhouse VOLA and Mascot Records present a new recording and official music video for “Paper Wolf” in front of the band’s return to North America. Watch the video below.

VOLA’s Asger Mygind offers, “We never put boundaries on our songwriting but merely search for a direction that feels unexplored and exciting to us. With ‘Paper Wolf,’ we suddenly found ourselves in a territory where an old-school metal atmosphere crept into our blend of sounds. We liked what we heard and then ran with it at full speed.”

The “Paper Wolf” video was produced by Riivata Visuals (who also produced the band’s videos for “Head Mounted Sideways,” “These Black Claws (feat. SHAHMEN),” and “Straight Lines.”  Mygind shares, “With the ‘Paper Wolf’ video we looked to entwine a serious narrative with dark undertones, and ethereal visuals into a captivating experience. Riivata Visuals delivered, and we are overjoyed that we had the chance to work together again after joint previous visual adventures”.

The band continues to break the rules with their effervescent blend of electronic and progressive pop-tinged metal. Having stormed the charts with their 2021 album ‘Witness’ that was mixed & mastered by Jacob Hansen, VOLA continues to take their equal parts melancholic and uplifting live performance to the stage – selling out shows all across the world on their way. After their hugely successful first-ever US Headline tour in November, 2022, the band are hungry to return for more.

The band shares, “We feel very honored, privileged and slightly nervous to return to the USA after the warm welcome we received on our first US run in late 2022 – This time in even bigger venues. It’s always somewhat nerve-wracking to go on tour. Will people be showing up again, or are they finally tired of our musical nonsense? No matter what, we look forward to meeting our fans as that is the most important part of touring for us.”

When it was released, the album ‘Witness’ was a critical smash, surpassing an incredible 22 million streams.  The album was lauded with international acclaim from Metal Hammer, Prog Magazine, Distorted Sound and Kerrang Radio & TV in the UK, reaching #7 in the Rock & Metal Album Charts. They were picked up by SiriusXM for multiple tracks and Metal Radio in the US which saw the album reach the Top 20 in the Billboard Current Hard Rock Charts and Top 25 in the Billboard New Artist/Heatseekers Album Chart. Tracks from the album were also added to numerous prominent playlists across Spotify, Amazon and Apple Music.

Just before his first solo album drops this Friday, DragonForce vocalist MARC HUDSON has released the third single and title track from his highly anticipated solo debut, Starbound Stories. On this track, he’s joined by prog guitarist Galen Stapley (Azure), who provides a fascinating solo. Together with MARC HUDSON’s crystal clear vocals, the song develops to an uplifting anime-inspired power track that further enhances the magical atmosphere and backs up the skillful guitars and drums.

This last advance taste of the album perfectly showcases what can be expected of it – an uplifting journey through MARC HUDSON’s universe of power metal, anime influences, Japanese music and video game soundtracks. This impression is underlined by a magical and colorful music video released alongside the single.

MARC HUDSON on “Starbound Stories”:
“‘Starbound Stories’, the title track, serves as the unrelenting epilogue to the album’s sonically rich tapestry of adventure & destiny, resounding into skies and souls alike the ultimate power metal anthem of perseverance & belief in the self.”

“Starbound Stories is a soaring rocket ride of sparkling anime-inspired power metal and I can’t wait for everyone to hear it!” – MARC HUDSON

Instrumental album opener “As The Twilight Met The Sea” acts as an introduction to the soundscapes of the album and features samurai metal master Ryoji Shinomoto (RYUJIN, previously known as Gyze) on traditional Japanese instruments. Shinomoto also lends his vocals on the following track, “Freedom Heart”, which also features a solo by guitar virtuoso Syu (Galneryus). Explosive power metal anthem “Dracula X” features a guitar solo by Jacky Vincent (ex-Falling in Reverse, ex-Cry Venom) and guest vocals by Adrienne Cowan (Seven Spires). Beautifully emotional successor “Stars” features classically trained violinist Mia Asano on electric violin. “Astralive” lures with an undeniably catchy chorus whilst also featuring fast drum patterns, spellbinding guitarwork and keys, and skillful power metal vocals that reach for the skies. “Swansong” starts off with a beautiful keyboard intro that could be pulled from a movie soundtrack. Sentimental vocals approach before the song progresses into a full-blown power metal ballad, with high screams and plenty of effects that further enhance the magical atmosphere while backing up the guitars and drums. Steve Terreberry, known on YouTube as Stevie T. (3.32M subscribers), performs a guitar solo on “Call Of The Martyrs” and is joined by prog guitarist Galen Stapley (Azure). Stapley also provides a solo on the following title track, “Starbound Stories”. “One More Sight Of The Sun With You” is sung in Japanese, staying true to the main themes of the album and closing the entire offering on an uplifting note.

MARC HUDSON’s debut solo album is an outstanding musical adventure balanced between power metal, video game soundtracks, Japanese music and even pop influences, showcasing virtuosity throughout all of its grand instrumentation.

ERADIKATED Release Third + Final Single ‘Flood’ from Upcoming Full-Length Album

Posted by tarjavirmakari on August 22, 2023

ERADIKATED have released their third and final single ‘Flood’ from the band’s upcoming full-length album “Descendants”, coming out on October 6th via Indie Recordings.

Listen to the single here: https://orcd.co/eraflood

Furthermore, Indie Recordings also has dropped the pre-orders of physical album copies (vinyl + CD).

“Flood is the perfect track to unleash right before the album release, to give the listener a last hint of what’s to come. This track is pretty much a mix of all the music I’ve ever wanted to listen to and play. I really hope you can hear and feel the raw energy in the song, just like when we play live. Completely unpretentious and no damn compromises!” – Calle Frogner Moberg (Eradikated)

Eradikated has been going full speed ahead since the first single Flames, from the upcoming album Descendants, was released in March. At the end of May, the second single Faced was released, which became the perfect warm-up for the summer with shows at Sweden Rock Festival, Gefle Metal Festival and Summer Breeze Open Air among others. After these prestigious festivals, Eradikated has been highly praised for their insane energy on stage, and the band’s streaming also increased significantly in connection with these shows.

FIRST FULL-LENGTH ALBUM
Immediately upon signing the record deal with Indie Recordings last November, the wheels were set in motion and plans for the release of the Eradikated´s first full-length album Descendants were initiated. Three singles will be released before the album in it´s massive and raging entirety will drop on October 6th.

The album is produced and recorded by the band themselves in Ragnar Östberg´s (guitarist Eradikated) studio East Hill Audio, before it was sent to be mixed and mastered by the renown Gustav Brunn at All In Audio, who has previously worked with acts such as Bomber, Obstruktion and Viagra Boys (live: sessions).

Descendants is a conceptual album that takes place in a near-distant apocalyptic future of anguish and rage, and all the lyrics make up a coherent story, written by front vocalist and guitarist Elvin Landaeus Csizmadia.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
After playing under the name The Generations Army since junior high in 2015 – and with three self-released albums and 200+ live shows, the band began to feel the need to take things one step further and professionalize their career.

So under a new name, but with the same constellation The Generations Army reformed as Eradikated in September 2021.

Things quickly accelerated. A management agreement was signed with Martin Gustafsson and Republic 66, not long after that collaboration with booking agent Martin Karlsson in Concerts Alive was in place.

Eradikated’s first gig was as support for The Haunted on their show at Plan B in Malmö October 16, 2021, and since then the milestones seem to keep piling up, including being invited to join legendary Anvil on their Impact Tour 2022 as support on all Nordic tour dates.

The band also got to single-handedly represent the Swedish hard rock and metal scene during the Norwegian showcase festival by:Larm 2022, in Oslo last September.

“One of the best thrash bands I’ve seen in years”, Kamran Haq (Live Nation UK/Download Festival) exclaimed in a Instagram story, and the band was immediately invited to a spontaneous meeting with Erlend Gjerde, CEO of Indie Recordings.

The rest is history, but also the start of a great new phase in the band’s career.

“Eradikated’s gig at by:Larm 2022 was nothing but pure, raw chaos where the band really made an unforgettable impression in front of the large part of international metal and rock delegates. As one of the Nordic´s largest independent metal and rock record labels, we jumped on the chance to sign Eradikated the moment they showed interest.

We are extremely proud to welcome these extremely talented young Swedes, and look forward to showcasing them internationally!” – Erlend Gjerde – Indie Recordings
