Nottingham, UK’s OUTERGODS has today shared their new single, Flesh Prison, with an accompanying visualizer. Flesh Prison is the third track to be taken from the extreme metal group’s forthcoming album, A Kingdom Built Upon the Wreckage of Heaven, which is set for release via Prosthetic Records on September 1.Flesh Prison follows OUTERGODS‘ recent live appearance at Bloodstock Open Air, with the group also sharing upcoming UK tour dates to celebrate the release of A Kingdom Built Upon the Wreckage of Heaven – full details below.
Speaking on the single release, guitarist Nathe Sinfield comments: “This was the second OUTERGODS song that was written and, like our previous single Nothing But a Fetid Worm, it gets straight into the chaos. This song quickly descends into an abrasive, discordant wall of noise using a blend of FX pedals and electronics, before falling apart completely. I think it helps sum up the overarching theme of the album in that respect.”
Vocalist Sam Strachan continues: “This is probably one of the most personal songs I’ve ever written, lyrically. It’s about feeling trapped in your own mind and feeling helpless. When Nathe sent it over to me, I fell in love with it immediately. Although it was extreme, it had a hardcore element which I really gelled with. I was listening to a lot of bands like Vein.fm and Loathe at the time and told Nathe he needed to add a filthy breakdown riff to the end of the song. This is my favourite of ours to play live.”
The formative months of OUTERGODS‘ existence were marked by separation as they wrote what would become their first full-length release throughout 2020. Finding a route towards escapism, founding members Nathe Sinfield (Lost Outrider) and Sam Strachan (Raised By Owls) realised that many of their personal struggles and anxieties were being channelled into the writing process. In the face of inner turmoil and an uncertain world, the pair found solace in their love for extreme metal – in particular ‘90s death metal – and set about creating an album that recreated the adrenaline and obnoxiousness of the albums that helped shape their own tastes.
Lyrically the album uses dark and sinister metaphors to explore turbulence they were experiencing throughout the album’s creation. Specifically Nathe found himself in a situation where his family were staring down an immeasurable bereavement – the feelings of hopelessness, grief, and torment were poured into his writing. Finding comfort in nostalgia and seeking connections to the past, a rich seam of inspiration was found in the music that was key to his own musical development.
The resulting songs fuse together elements of death metal, black metal and grindcore – blending their abrasive early influences such as Morbid Angel and Strapping Young Lad with the intensity of more modern, expansive but intense bands like Full of Hell. A Kingdom Built Upon The Wreckage of Heaven was self produced, and stays true to their DIY ethic and underground attitude. The album was mastered by friend Kristofer Strandberg, and the album’s cover art was crafted by Nathe’s brother, Tim Sinfield.
Bringing OUTERGODS to life for the album recording and with designs on playing live meant assembling a full band – and Nottingham’s fertile scene didn’t disappoint. Having recruited Alex LeGrice (Raised By Owls), Dan Oldcorn (Antre) and Jordan Spencer (Evil Scarecrow) OUTERGODS are now set to become an unstoppable force of sonic devastation, weaving bleak tales of misery and woe.
A Kingdom Built Upon the Wreckage of Heaven tracklist: 1. Nocturnal Death 2. Into the Howling Void 3. Faceless Entities 4. Tangled in the Cogs of the Nightmare Machine 5. Abandoned At the Centre of a Celestial Hell 6. Nothing But A Fetid Worm 7. Catacombs of Madness 8. Flesh Prison 9. A Kingdom Built Upon the Wreckage of Heaven
Upcoming OUTERGODS tour dates: 1 September – Corporation – Sheffield, UK 2 September – The Chameleon – Nottingham, UK 3 September – The Dev – Camden Town, London, UK

“Subway Anthem,” ATENA’s highly anticipated new album, is scheduled for release on September 29th via Indie Recordings. In addition to the upcoming album release, ATENA is gearing up for a thrilling fall 2023 tour, bringing their electrifying live performances to fans.

VARG, Germany’s top-notch pagan metal force, returns stronger than ever on their new album, entitled Ewige Wacht (Engl. Eternal Vigil), to be released on October 13, 2023 via Napalm Records. With their last and most successful record to date, Zeichen (Engl. Signs, 2020, #16 in the German album charts), VARG put the thematic and musical focus completely on their pagan roots. On their brand new brainchild, the wolves follow this path unwaveringly, honestly, authentically and raw, and impressively manifest their reincarnation and matchless standing on top of the scene!
The eighth studio album transports Nordic mythology as well as values like honesty and loyalty. VARG once again show themselves to be an invincible unit, as the first single and opening track “Immer Treu” (Engl. Always Faithful) already is proof of. Upon very first listen, it becomes apparent how involved singer Fylgja has been in the full album process this time around. Her valkyrie-like singing expands the band’s sonic spectrum and forms a perfectly harmonizing contrast to Freki’s razor-sharp screams and growls.
Fylgja on “Immer Treu”: “’Immer Treu’ is a song that stands for many things. For fortitude, strength and loyalty. But it also underlines that hate, based on different views like for example in terms of religion, is absolutely bad and senseless. In the end we are all the same and should accept and respect each other. It stands for the freedom to be what we want to be.”
Songs such as “Schildmaid” (shieldmaiden), “Fylgja” and “Eisenseite” are emblematic of the striking interplay between both vocalists and the path VARG have been treading since Zeichen. “Weltenfeind” (enemy of the world), “Tyr” and “Hammer” resound as powerful hymns, uncompromising with mercilessly brute nagging and cutting riffs. The folky melodies in “Morgenrot” (dawn) lead to the epic “Siegreiches Heer” (victorious army), which once again sharpens the idea of unity that runs like a red thread through Ewige Wacht. The title track forms the final climax and combines pagan themes, haunting melodies and the engaging power of the wolves to end this outstanding sonic adventure, leading into promising times for the German horde.
Freki adds: “Ewige Wacht is both our most emotional and strongest album. It is a journey through Nordic mythology that tells of old stories and the protection and preservation of the flame of our ancestors. Traditions and values like family, fortitude and desire are like a common thread running through the entire record. Uncompromising harshness meets epic and sustaining melodies. Authentically raw production and yet more powerful and mighty than ever. This album will pierce the hearts of our fans, because it comes deeply from ours.”
VARG undoubtedly stand as a firmly rooted, leading entity in the German pagan scene that has been gathering fans around the world for over 18 years of the band’s existence, touring Europe and North America, and have always driven their following upwards through numerous gigs at Europe’s biggest festivals, such as Wacken Open Air, Party.San and Metalfest. Even after all these years, Freki (vocals), Fylgja (vocals), Morkai (guitar) as well as the newest additions to the line-up, Ulvar (guitar, bass) and Rohgarr (drums,) still manage to provide incomparable sonic surprises to their devotees. The revitalized line-up with two highly talented and innovative musicians brings a breath of fresh air and leads VARG into a new chapter in the band’s history. Grown artistic maturity meets a unique feeling of common bond between band and fans, which is reflected thematically in the new album. Ewige Wacht tells of myths and legends of long forgotten times and transfers them into the here and now in trademark multifaceted pagan garb.
Don’t miss VARG live on stage in 2023, performing their first show ever with the new line-up and a very special set at Wolfszeit festival, before heading out on their headline tour with labelmates NACHTBLUT and folk metal band Sagenbringer, kicking off October 7 in Erfurt.

XANDRIA returned with an impressive new lineup, enchanting their fans with new songs during this year’s spring European tour with labelmates DELAIN. XANDRIA opens an exciting chapter with the eighth studio album, The Wonders Still Awaiting. Mastermind Marco Heubaum returns with a new lineup and leads the band once again into wonderful spheres, without renouncing their characteristic trademarks. The impressive vocal wealth of Ambre Vourvahis – ranging from rock grit, operatic highs and even death metal growls – opens the unit’s sound to a wider palette of colors. Songs like the opening epic “Two Worlds”, “The Wonders Still Awaiting” and “Ghosts” manifest the thematic mood of the album while constructing incredible soundscapes of pure symphonic metal. XANDRIA addresses issues of social inequality and the quest for a just world. “Paradise” showcases some of the album’s strongest hooks, captivating with great metallic pop melodies. The veil of various influences is lifted once more in “Illusion Is Their Name”, dashing all deception with heavy power metal vibes. Tracks like “Your Stories I’ll Remember” and “Scars” show the intimate side of XANDRIA on one hand, while combining rhythmic heaviness on the other. The latter is reminiscent of a James Bond theme, dressed in a heavy musical soundscape. The epic nine minute album closer “Astéria”, featuring Greek lyrics written by Ambre Vourvahis, lands as the album’s exclamation point, proving with a grand finish that the five-piece has fearlessly started a revolution in the symphonic metal genre – commencing an impressive new era of XANDRIA with The Wonders Still Awaiting.
