Pagan Metallers ARKONA Drop Music Video for ‘Ugasaya’

Pagan metal quintet ARKONA have revealed an official music video for their beautiful synth-driven track “Ugasaya”, just in time for the release of their new album, Kob’, also out today! Conceptually, the album is a catabasis depicting humanity’s gradual descent into the abyss. Every problem of humanity is indicated in the album in the order of its inevitable occurrence.

Surrounded by tormented nature, the official music video for “Ugasaya” reflects the broken soul of Mother Earth and the dystopian world we are living in. Bone-dry earth surrounds a former beautiful lake as ARKONA perform their doom metal-inspired song. The shattering and dreadful scenery merges the rhythmic synths and a grooving baseline, creating a turbulent atmosphere with the depths of Masha’s growls and heartbreaking screams.

ARKONA on the new music video for “Ugasaya”:
“Ugasaya” is the third step out of 6, which humanity is consciously taking down the path into the abyss, thus dooming all human race to total annihilation. This song tells about an ecological catastrophe, the inevitable result of the insane deeds committed by human beings throughout their entire existence and worthless living at the expense of the endless suffering of Mother Earth. It’s about natural cataclysms and disasters, as consequences of human intervention in the desire to rise above the true divine essence of nature, resulting in all the elements rebel against the humans, and nature, initially being the only parent – Creator, killing its insensitive and selfish child.”

“At the beginning of the song, you can hear the parable by the Soviet filmmaker Konstantin Lopushansky, which states:
“Look at yourself, human! For there is nothing more beautiful than you. Lies – that’s your name, and hypocrisy – that’s your deeds. Everything you touch will be desecrated: the living and the dead, trees and stones of planets, air, animals and fish. Everything will be poisoned, everything will be distorted…”

ARKONA on the new album, Kob’:
“We’re enormously proud to present you our new album, Kob’, which is finally ready to step out into this world in its full glory. Clad in a black robe, it’s prepared to reveal itself in the image of the many-faced and majestic death, which inevitably leads us along an invisible thread, by the whisper of a prophetic divination spell called Kob’. Close your eyes. Led by the Universal Darkness that has risen from the grave, taste the flesh of a blatant bloody reality. Drink the tears of Mother Earth’s sufferings. Take your filthy skin off your innocent face, in order to be cleansed from the suffering received during the dark power of epidemics and wars which were created by your pure, gentle hands.
For you are a human and the world hasn’t seen anything more beautiful than you….”

Preparing listeners for the first step into the abyss, the album opener “Izrechenie. Nachalo” (ENG: The Speech. The Beginning) gently takes the listener’s hand, leading them into trancelike realms of ominous whispers and murmuring voices – a recurring motif on the album. Dominated by rhythmic synths and a catchy bassline, “Ugasaya” (ENG: Fadin’ Away) represents the modern era of ARKONA’s pagan roots, as well as the great diversity in their music. Although Kob’ is dedicated to pagan metal, “Mor”, one of the album’s longest tracks, leans towards black metal – forming the most epic hymn on the album. Not only articulating through lyrics, Masha also sets the tone with her keyboard solo on the emotional “Razryvaya plot’ ot bezyskhodnosti bytiya” (ENG: Tearing the flesh owing to the despair of being). While society digs its own grave through wars, religious beliefs and environmental problems, pensive wind instruments and acoustic guitar interludes transform the aggression of deep low growls and fast-paced guitar shredding. Closing the album with the world’s absolute apocalypse on “Izrechenie. Iskhod” (ENG: The Speech. The Conclusion), Kob’ is deeply rooted in pagan metal stylings of the old days, but offers a modern spirit via its production and variety alike.

Indonesian VOICE OF BACEPROT Announce Debut Album “Retas” + Stream New Single ‘What’s the Holy (Nobel) Today?’

Groundbreaking Indonesian trio VOICE OF BACEPROT have announced their seismic debut album, Retas, to be released 13th July via 12WIRED.

Coinciding with the news, the band have also revealed their anti-war anthem, ‘What’s the Holy (Nobel) Today?’.

Stream here: https://li.sten.to/whats-the-holy-nobel-today

Voice Of Baceprot (VOB)’s music is a powerful reflection of the issues close to their hearts. The Indonesian rock trio do not shy away from tackling the difficult topics that weigh on their minds, whether based on personal experiences or events they have experienced, witnessed, or read about. Their music speaks volumes about the world we live in and the struggles we all face.

The band’s latest single, ‘What’s the Holy (Nobel) Today?’, was born from the deep concerns that vocalist/guitarist Marsya, bassist Widi, and drummer Sitti harbour regarding the numerous wars ravaging the world, capturing headlines and tearing apart the lives of countless innocent people.

“In 2017, we started to engage in deeper and more serious discussions with [VOB’s counselling teacher] Abah Erza as he touched upon more significant issues,” Marsya reminisces.

“One of the most gut-wrenching topics that drained us emotionally was the horrors of war. Abah pointed out that the biggest casualties from such wars were always civilians, mostly women and children,”Marsya continues.

“You can read what the single is really about between the lines. We want to express our experience of being trapped in a ‘war’, which involves us being bullied on social media. Some would attack us with such intense fury through negative comments, even though we have never shown aggression towards anyone,”Sitti adds.

‘What’s the Holy (Nobel) Today?’ is mixed by Tue Madsen (Meshuggah, Suicide Silence, etc) and mastered by Howie Weinberg (Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, etc).

There are few groups as powerful and potent as Indonesian rock trio Voice of Baceprot (pronounced ‘bah-che-prot’, often abbreviated as VOB).

Forming in Garut, West Java, in 2014 while still at school, the band – Marsya (vocals/guitar), Widi (bass) and Sitti (drums) named their band after the Sundanese word for ‘noisy’: a true representation of their style of music.

The band are already celebrated across the globe for their indomitable attitude and power of representation.

One of the most exciting musical voices from Southeast Asia, VOB began to turn heads with early viral covers of Rage Against The Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Slipknot, and Metallica, garnering attention from local and international media, as well as endorsements and praise from Tom Morello and Flea.

Besides their obvious prodigious musical talent, it was also the unique and contradictory combination of heavy rock and their wearing of the hijab that have caught the eye of many.

The group have overcome many obstacles in their still-young career, not least facing opposition from conservative Muslims in their home country, and stereotyping elsewhere due to their hijab-wearing on stage.

In the words of Marsya: “Wearing a hijab should not be a barrier to the group’s pursuit of its dream of being heavy metal stars… I think gender equality should be supported because I feel I am still exploring my creativity, while at the same time, not diminishing my obligations as a Muslim woman”.

Themes of empowerment, defiance, and celebration run throughout Voice Of Baceprot‘s work, themes heard throughout the debut album Retas.

The anthemic single ‘PMS’, short for perempuan merdeka seutuhnya (“completely independent women”), celebrates women who are breaking stereotypes and boundaries in all forms.

The origin of ‘PMS’ is from VOB’s own background, when the band members still lived in their village in rural Indonesia. A conservative community, there are few career options for women after school – by choosing a career in music, Voice Of Baceprot have been marked by some as an anomaly or rebel in their community. ‘PMS’ is then a solidarity call for all women who face the same problems but march on regardless, to keep doing what they love.

This fearless and fearsome approach has already cemented VOB’s position as a hugely exciting prospect – and noticed by key media players globally, including The New York Times, The Guardian, NME, Metal Hammer, Kerrang!, and many more across USA, Europe, and beyond.

In summer 2022 VOB performed at Wacken Open Air 2022 to over 5,000 fans, have recently announced their debut US tour, and have collectively garnered close to ten million views and streams of their music across all platforms.

Retas tracklisting:

1.    What’s the Holy (Nobel) Today?
2.    PMS
3.    Age Oriented
4.    The Enemy of Earth is You
5.    Kawani
6.    (NOT) PUBLIC PROPERTY
7.    God, Allow Me (Please) to Play Music
8.    School Revolution
9.    God, Allow Me (Please) to Play Music (Live at HITC Jakarta 2022)
