ARMORED SAINT released their Symbol Of Salvation Live CD/DVD in 2021 via Metal Blade Records. The release came in celebration of the seminal album’s 30th anniversary. A record vocalist John Bush refers to as the band’s “cornerstone record,” Symbol Of Salvation Live is a combination live album and video of the band playing the album in its entirety at New York City’s famed Gramercy Theatre during their 2018 tour. It captures the power, diversity, and peerless songwriting contained within. “I felt like showing Symbol… in another light was a great homage to the record itself,” states bassist Joey Vera. “Also, having all the fans be there and part of that event is a way for us to say, ‘Thank you!’ For, without them, we can’t do any of this in the first place.“

Pete Cortese – Guitar
Mike D’Antonio – Bass
Colin Conway – Drums

ABOUT DEATH RAY VISION:
Commencing writing in late 2018 following a tour with Killswitch Engage – who share bassist Mike D’Antonio with DRV – the band had a lot of creative momentum still burning following that year’s Negative Mental Attitude and kept it rolling. The results will demonstrate that they are playing at the top of their game. “We’re a lot more cohesive as a band after playing together for so many years, and we’ve gotten better at songwriting and collaborating to bring out the best in everyone’s ideas,” says guitarist Pete Cortese.

A further new dimension affecting the sound is the addition of vocalis Bennett to the band’s ranks, who the existing members knew would be the perfect fit from his time with notable acts Wrecking Crew, Panzerbastard (both of whom shared the stage with Cortese and D’Antonio’s other band Overcast), and Ramallah. “Keith brings a whole lot of piss and vinegar, with a side of street cred. He brought a new sense of enthusiasm and excitement and got us even more fired up to make a great record,” says Cortese. Guitarist Chris Rosati adds, “Creatively speaking, Keith is a force of nature. His ability to get inside a new song and quickly come up with vocals and lyrics is really something to witness.”

Lyrically, No Mercy From Electric Eyes is a more politically charged record than their previous releases – “it’s more pissed off, and anyone paying attention to the state of the world can understand why,” says Cortese – but it’s also deeply personal for Bennett. “Every word I’m singing is from the heart,” says the vocalist. “I should have been dead a few years ago, I’m here for a reason. These lyrics are a direct line to how I feel, how I live, what I see.”

When it came to tracking, drummer Colin Conway laid down his parts at Mad Oak studio with long time associate Benny Grotto, while everything else was recorded, engineered and produced by Rosati at his home studio, Mass Metal Studios.

The record is wrapped up with a title drawn from the lyrics of one of the tracks – Cortese pointing out that it makes perfect sense given their band name – and vivid artwork courtesy of D’Antonio, which according to the bassist stems from the idea “of ‘being under the thumb of an ethereal overlord’. The fear of knowing the ‘master’ is watching your every move, from a short distance away. In this world, only obedience is accepted and absolutely no mercy is given to those who fail.” Having poured so much of their hearts and souls into No Mercy From Electric Eyes, the band hope to play the songs live as much as possible, and have aspirations of touring outside of the US for the first time, but at the end of the day they are proud of what they have achieved and believe they are worth giving a damn about, because they give a damn about everything they do. “We made a great record that doesn’t sound like many contemporary metal bands,” says Cortese. “It’s heavy as fuck without having to rely on drop Z tuning, and it’s a great balance of aggressive and melodic without sounding contrived.“

LIVING COLOUR’s Corey Glover Recalls How Rolling Stone’s Mick Jagger Helped Band in Early Days

Posted by tarjavirmakari on May 5, 2023
Posted in: Int. News, News. Tagged: Corey Glover, Living Colour, The Metal Voice. Leave a comment

For Canada’s The Metal Voice Kenny Kessel spoke to Living Colour’s singer Corey Glover on May 3, 2023 at the Newburgh Vintage Emporium  in NY in celebration of the 35th anniversary of the bands debut album ‘Vivid‘ which was released May 3, 1988.

In the chat Corey Glover talked about the writing, recording and touring of ‘Vivid’ and how Rolling Stones’ singer Mick Jagger helped  in breaking the band in the early days. Plus Glover spoke about some new music he was working on and if Living Colour was working on a new album.

When asked how Mick Jagger helped in breaking the band in the early days, pre Vivid
“Vernon (Reid, Guitarist) got a chance to play for Mick Jagger (Rolling Stones) on his solo record and Jagger had heard about Vernon and Living Color and he (Mick Jagger) and Jeff Beck actually came to see us play at CBGB’s. After that he (Mick Jagger) was like if there is anything I can do to help you guys just let me know. We’re looking for a record deal at the time right so he’s like I’m recording and mixing my record at the studio in the city on  48th Street.  I’ve rented out the whole studio and  I have spare rooms if you want to come in and we’ll do some demos. We’ll  work on some stuff and see if that works out. We went in and we did  ‘Which way to America’ and we did  ‘Glamor boys’ which we thought was sort of commercial in its own right. So he (Mick Jagger)  produced and recorded those two songs as a demo, to send out to record companies. And we got some interesting people coming around and saying stuff,  we can make this happen, we can make you the biggest stars in the world and…so on.. Then we went to Epic Records and Epic was like what will make this work, we can listen to it all day and it sounds great and sonically that’s good but we want to make a record that sounds like you playing live.”

When asked if Living Colour was working on new music
“Oh absolutely we’re always working on the music. It’s difficult, take our time in making albums, that’s a blessing and a curse. Because you get a lot of material while in the space between. So if there’s nothing to do something will come up to do and we all have something to do.  We’re all working all the time. Everybody’s doing other things, so it’s hard. We have to carve out times to be able to get together and really sort of concentrate on making a record. Which is difficult. “

NUUTTI HANNULA RADIANSSI Reveal Story Behind the Second Single ‘Valtameri’, Out Today

NUUTTI HANNULA RADIANSSI is a band that plays progressive metal music, combining impactful riffs, catchy vocal melodies, and a vivid atmosphere that all come together in long and winding structures. The band’s Finnish-language lyrics deal with fundamental questions of the human mind and represent a wide range of emotions, forming a clear whole.

The band’s new single ‘Valtameri’, is released today, on May 5th. The single is a multi-part composition that progresses like a story, and its lyrics deal with confronting difficult emotions and letting go of them and it deals with letting go of difficult emotions, releasing oneself, and the deeper nature of the self from a meditative and Jungian perspective. Musically, the song grows to massive proportions and includes numerous different parts, forming a musical story. The song’s atmosphere has also been the inspiration for the lyrics.

Nuutti tells the story behind the single:
“Valtameri speaks about how difficult it is to confront old traumas face to face, and how, despite the fear, facing them can be the best thing a person can do for themselves.
The lyrics of the song ask: can I let go of this battle against the past? What happens if I let this part of myself die?

The inspiration for the lyrics came from my personal exploration of the shadow self introduced by Carl Jung, as well as the merging of these analytical thoughts into my own meditation practice, which has acted as a catalyst between the unconscious and conscious mind.

The lyrics also address the nature of the human self. Is there a permanent self, or is it an optical illusion that disappears upon closer examination? However, we cannot act without our own personality, and in every moment, we choose consciously or unconsciously a perspective through which we view the world. This labyrinth of perspectives is the foundation upon which humanity is built, and it has no beginning or end.

The composition of the song came about when I discovered an interesting chord on my guitar and combined it with a pattern that follows a 23/8 time signature. This pattern, which appears at the beginning of the song, evoked a unique marine atmosphere that complemented the composition.

The structure of the song is meandering and reflects the ocean, which is sometimes calm, but at other times is caught in a violent storm. After the storm, however, the ocean returns to tranquility.”

In addition to the band leader Nuutti Hannula, the band includes keyboardist Ilari Hannula and guitarist Matias Lehtoranta, who also handles the band’s mixing and mastering.

Perth’s fearless, riff-laden, genre-bending band VOYAGER will be releasing its eighth studio album ‘Fearless In Love’ on July 14 via Season Of Mist! In celebration, the Eurovision contenders are now sharing the first song, “Prince of Fire,” along with a music video. The song, which might be the heaviest Voyager song to date, can be found at THIS LOCATION!

On ‘Fearless in Love’, sweeping vocals paired with emotive lyrics inspired by the grit and glam of 80s and 90s film overlay heavy guitar riffs and percussion to create a sonic journey that pushes the boundary of what fans have come to expect from VOYAGER.

“’Fearless in Love’ was written and recorded between 2020 and 2022. The writing process was very different from how we’ve done things in the past,” explains Danny Estrin. “As a result, the album is more cohesive and exciting with a cinematic feel, hailing back to gritty films of the 80s and 90s showcasing all the layers that make up Voyager. This album takes you on a ride through a dark city and leaves you on a more pensive, reflective note by the end.”

VOYAGER enter promised land with their new progressive synth-metal anthem “Promise”. Representing Australia at the 67th Eurovision Song Contest, the quintet will bring their synths and riffs to the world stage this weekend! “Promise” can be streamed everywhere HERE.

The opening line of Voyager’s 2023 Eurovision song “Promise” is somewhat prophetic. As vocalist Danny Estrin belts out the lyric, “Have you ever done anything like this before?” audiences across the globe will realize they haven’t. For the first time ever, a band will represent the country – and not just any band – a band with soaring melodies, masterful riffs, keytar solos, powerhouse rhythms, and enough charisma to take on the world.

Shattering expectations, their resilience and determination has finally paid off. Theirs is a story of passion, perseverance, and patience. The band has been throwing their hat in the ring for the Eurovision Song Contest since Australia announced its participation back in 2015. Eight years later, they have prospered, overcome, and are now victorious. Voyager are a band who take everything in their stride, over the years garnering a strong fanbase near and far, continuing to vie for their Eurovision dream. At last year’s Eurovision – Australia Decides, they took out second place in a nail-biting finish, leading the public vote with their song “Dreamer.”

Now, Voyager are about to set sail Merseyside with their song “Promise;” an epic, progressive pop metal track that transports the listener on an emotive story of adventure and redemption. Its stunning music video was captured in the region of Western Australia’s mid-west Kalbarri that boasts the pink ethereal Hutt Lagoon, and Kalbarri National Park, where there are epic gorges and rock formations including Nature’s Window.

Blending New Romantic, ‘80s infused vocals with technical, melodic framework, groovy basslines, bombastic drums, and what is fast becoming the band’s signature instrument, the keytar, it’s sure to lift the roof off Pier Head, Liverpool. They have toured the world many times over, with an influx of fans on their latest European tour won over by their electric live performances.

Voyager will soon embark on their eighth album cycle, but before they can begin their next chapter, they must first take on the epic battle they have long been fighting for.

Ukraine’s Kalush Orchestra won the 2022 Eurovision Song Contest in Turin, Italy, with their song Stefania. This year, the United Kingdom will host the competition on Ukraine’s behalf with the theme United by Music. This is the ninth time the United Kingdom will host Eurovision and the fifth time it’s hosted for other countries due to financial or capacity issues.

SBS’s exclusive coverage will once again be in the capable hands of music buff Myf Warhurst and comedian Joel Creasey. This year marks 40 years of SBS broadcasting the Eurovision Song Contest to all Australians, and the eighth year Australia has participated in the event.

Line-up
Danny Estrin – Vocals, Keytar
Simone Dow – Guitars
Alex Canion – Bass
Scott Kay – Guitars
Ash Doodkorte – Drums

CALLIGRAM Share New Single + Music Video ‘Frantumi In Itinere’

Posted by tarjavirmakari on May 5, 2023

Photographer credit: Andy Ford

CALLIGRAM have today shared a new single and music video, Frantumi In Itinere, from their forthcoming album, Position | Momentum, which is set for release via Prosthetic Records on July 14. Frantumi In Itinere is the second track to be taken from the London, UK based multinational black metal group’s sophomore full-length, with an intense thematic focus on human consciousness and death. CALLIGRAM has also recently announced UK tour dates – with more details below.

Stream Frantumi In Itinere via Apple Music | TIDAL | Deezer | Bandcamp and Spotify
Pre-order Position | Momentum here.

Speaking on Frantumi In Itinere, CALLIGRAM comments: “This song is about death and consciousness. The limits of human consciousness is the “reach of thought”.  As humans we naturally strive for reaching and overcoming the limits which means, in this case, taking consciousness beyond the field of human thought into something greater, vaster and incomprehensible by thought and unreachable by intellect. At the same time this is terrifying because that same limit is what defines us and keeps us alive: the idea of “life” lays within its limits.”

Joy can be found in the most unlikely of places. A listen through CALLIGRAM‘s latest offering may not instantly conjure up feelings of immediate joy, but rest assured – between the blistering howls and blackened riffs, there is much to celebrate.

Position | Momentum saw the group decamp to The Parlour Studios in Kettering to record with Russ Russell (Napalm Death, Dimmu Borgir, At The Gates) during the summer of 2022. The follow up to 2020’s The Eye Is The First Circle doesn’t ease up on intensity; if anything, giving the chaos a little more room to breathe has shaped CALLIGRAM into something even more formidable than before.

Sonically, the band has further refined their amalgamation of bilious D-beat punk and ice cold black metal. The results are as abrasive as one would hope, but ceding space to atmospheric passages helps create a claustrophobic, ominous ambience to proceedings; allowing some light in only serves to accentuate the darkness further.

Once again vocals are delivered in Matteo Rizzardo’s native Italian – and even those who don’t speak the language should soon pick up the jist of his missives. Tales of pain, chaos, struggle and anxiety are poured into each anguished scream, a growing sense of combustibility becomes palpable as the album progresses. But Rizzardo is keen to clarify that Position | Momentum is not about catharsis through music: this is not his therapy.

The hardest work for Rizzardo was done away from the band as he walked along a path of acceptance and self-analysis. As the burdens on his shoulders grew heavier and the darkness became all-consuming he set out to understand, embrace and reclaim the darkest parts of himself. Position | Momentum documents his feelings looking back at troubled times – with clarity, acceptance, and yes – joy. Reflecting on his experiences with some emotional distance meant that the lyrics came easily; Rizzardo describes them as ‘flying out’ – a purging of sorts.

Music is often seen as medicine; a balm to soothe what ails you. With no intention to use Position | Momentum as a crutch, CALLIGRAM has crafted the opposite – a caustic celebration of pain, death and chaos.

Position | Momentum tracklist:
1. Sul Dolore
2. Frantumi In Itinere
3. Eschilo
4. Tebe
5. Per Jamie
6. Ostranenie
7. Ex-Sistere
8. Seminario Dieci

Upcoming CALLIGRAM tour dates:
May 6 – Anarchy Brew Co – Newcastle, UK
May 8 – The Underworld – Camden, UK
July 29 – Reaper Festival – Hairy Dog – Derby, UK

CALLIGRAM is:
Matteo Rizzardo – vocals
Ardo Cotones – drums / vocals
