“The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe. If you try it, you will be lonely often, and sometimes frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself.” – Rudyard Kipling

In an era that is designed to beat down and weaken the individual, Black Flame Eternal is an album that represents strength, empowerment, and total opposition. With mounting pressure to engage in modern societal tribalism, Cloak invokes a spiritual rebellion that exists beyond good and evil with album number three.

“All of our albums are created with a spiritual focus, dealing with how we see life, death, and everything in between. I think the earlier records dealt more with the mysteries that surrounded delving deeper into the world of dark spirituality, whereas the new material has taken what we’ve learned and used it to move forward with force,” says Cloak frontman Scott Taysom of the record’s underlying philosophy. “Black Flame Eternal is a statement of spiritual empowerment in every sense. For the first time we want people to grasp on to this sentiment, instead of keeping it completely personal within our world of Cloak. The themes and the sheer power can be felt much more within the songs that this album contains.”

“Our goal is complete spiritual liberation, which is where true power and freedom exists,” he adds. “We’ve reached a point in history where people are forced to pick a side or to join a team, so to speak. Cloak stands in complete opposition to this. We aim to be a giant middle finger in the face of the empty modern world.”

While Cloak might rage against societal conventions, the Atlanta quartet embraces the rebellious and time-tested traditions of heavy metal. Whether it be the conjuring the chaotic spirit of Swedish black metal purveyors Watain and Dissection, summoning the deep, dark and sensual groove of Danzig, or evoking the raw speed and raucous energy of Motörhead, the influence of metal’s founding fathers is deep within Cloak’s DNA. Cloak’s charm, however, does not merely lie within its romanticism of the past, but rather is the way each of these genres has shaped Cloak’s own personal identity. And with Black Flame Eternal, the record sees Cloak continue to strengthen its own unique established sound.

Cloak recognizes the importance of a band’s third record, with Taysom explaining, “These influences will always be important to us, as they are some of the best and most important bands of our time. On the other hand, what is so special about getting to the third record of our career is that inspiration starts to move inwards. We had enough experience and material at this point to really know what we do best and how we can utilize these skills in the best way possible. If you look at some of the most iconic bands, their third albums were massive steps towards greatness. So to us, we feel our third record will be a very important one in our time as a band.”

The Atlantan’s evolution is evident in the fury displayed on Black Flame Eternal, which flawlessly compliments the grandiose melodic atmosphere. “This was a conscious effort. Early on before the album even started, I knew it was going to be a much more aggressive and powerful album. I wanted to take a step away from certain sounds and add a bit of brutality back in. The overall vibe matches who we are much more, so it was only fitting to move towards this sound. It almost feels like we are going back to our roots as people in certain ways,” explains Taysom.

Black Flame Eternal follows up sophomore effort The Burning Dawn, which was released in November 2019, with hell unleashing its fury on the globe just a few short months later. As plans to tour the new album around the world came to a screeching halt, the band did not stagger or falter, and instead used this gift of time to write. When reflecting upon the lost years and its impact, Taysom seemingly embraces the situation with little regrets, “Considering Cloak is a sacred space for us, these exterior things did not have as much of an impact as one might think. But it was impossible to ignore some of what was going on throughout these tumultuous years. It’s bound to affect people’s personal lives and the way the mind works during these interesting times. One thing that it did greatly affect was the fact that we could not promote The Burning Dawn properly after the one U.S. tour we did with 1349. We feel this hurt the record, but there was nothing we could do. We were one of the earliest out of the gate after venues started to open back up, and we’ve been continuing to tour in promotion of that album all the way up until now.”

Cloak utilized every minute of this time to focus on fully realizing its vision for Black Flame Eternal. “The initial stage of the writing process started in January of 2020, and lasted all the way until May 2021. It was the longest spanning album process for us so far, with many long days, nights, and weeks trying to piece the songs together the best we could.” While the record did not come together swiftly or easily, the care and attention put into its creation is evident in its powerful composition.

Making up for lost time, these road warriors have already embarked on several high profile North American tours since the autumn of 2021, commanding audiences in every major city with their chaos magick. Each performance merges the spirit of black metal with the backbone of rock ‘n’ roll as the band consistently delivers a blistering set from start to finish. Taysom describes Cloak’s live approach as “a mixture of ethereal atmosphere and total abrasive chaos. The mixture of these two opposing energies is where Cloak lies; the meeting of high and low. To us, this is where the most interesting moments happen, both emotionally and physically.”

With no borders or boundaries, Cloak is ready to embark on this new chapter as the leader of its own pack. The band bows to no one, forging its own path as one of the governing metal forces of this decade as ‘Black Flame Eternal’ promises to scorch the earth and leave its hallowed mark.

Greek veterans of THE MAGUS have previously announced their debut album ‘Βυσσοδομώντας’, which will be released via The Circle Music records on  October 31st, 2023. In celebration, THE MAGUS are now kicking off the pre-order for the album’s very limited edition boxset (strictly limited to 130 copies).

Pre-orders are now available here.

The Magus comments on boxset: “As you can see we have decided to already open the pre-order for the Limited Box FIRST before any other format. This was my personal decision, because the release is special to me for a couple of reasons. Not only is the exclusive artwork an esoteric reinterpretation of the ‘Serptagram’ done by none other than Zbigniew M. Bielak, the painting on the canvas, depicting the Arch Angel Lucifer in Byzantine hagiography style, is done by the renowned comic artist Malk Giamalakis Nikos! Both of these great artists are fans of NECROMANTIA ‘s music and it was a huge honor to work with the both of them. Last, but certainly not least; this box is also strictly limited to 130 copies! I want to give the option to our true disciples to be able to get this first before anything else!”

About the album, THE MAGUS continues:

“I can only say that is the most organic album I ever made guiding all my black metal influences to a truly horrific, nightmarish path. Dark melodies unite with feverish worlds to give birth to majestic, aristocratic horrors. We had the pleasure to work with artists like  KING DUDE, IDVex (1/2 SOUTHERN NORTH) and Hel Pyre (W.E.B.) as guest vocalists in order to enhance the atmosphere and the ritualistic parts of the music. It is also the first time in my musical journey where I used live choir arranged by Christos Antoniou (SEPTIC FLESH). And to finalize, the recordings took place at PENTAGRAM studio with the infamous George Emmanuel (LUCIFER’S CHILD) behind the mixing table and the production.

Like Serpents from the Depths we rise!”

Hailing back to 1989, Greek black metal outfit Necromantia was founded by the two musicians Baron Blood (bass) and The Magus (vocals, guitars, keyboards). The band’s music was characterized by a mix of black metal and death metal, with elements of Greek folk music and classical music. Over the years, Necromantia had undergone several line-up changes, but the band  continued to release albums and tour, becoming one of the most respected and influential black metal bands from Greece!

Following the tragic death of Baron Blood in 2019, The Magus decided to disband Necromantia by releasing their final album “To the Depths We Descend” in 2021. But The Magus’ personal musical and mystical journey did not stop here. The inner black flame, which urges The Magus to create dark and extreme art which is expressed through music and lyrics, never ceased to burn.

In the summer of 2022, The Magus decided to give birth to a new musical project, entitled simply and appropriately; THE MAGUS. Joined by long-time associates, El (Soulskinner, Zaratus, Thou Art Lord, Principality of Hell etc) on guitars and Maelstrom (Necromantia, Yoth Iria, Thou Art Lord, Principality of Hell) on drums in order to complete the formula and start working on material for the upcoming album to be released later this year!

El: Guitars
Maelstrom: Drums

ANTIROPE Drop New Music Video & Single ‘Dead Sun’

Doomy Alternative Metal band ANTIROPE (Munich, Germany) just premiered a new music video and single entitled “Dead Sun“. This is the second music video & single taken from their upcoming LP album Amnesia which will be released on June 30, 2023 via Eclipse Records. The album was produced, recorded, mixed, and mastered by Patrick Fleischer (Lacrimas Profundere, Darkseed, Alev) at Studio 6.0, and the music video was directed by Patrick Fleischer.

Watch the new “Dead Sun” music video via YouTube, and stream the single on Spotify, Apple Music, Pandora, Tidal, Deezer, Amazon Music and more at this location

“The reference to being ‘under a dead sun’ reflects a feeling of being trapped or stuck in a stagnant, lifeless state” says lead vocalist Slaven Stokic. “It signifies a sense of disconnect from dreams, aspirations or a higher purpose and resonates with the underlying emotions conveyed in the song. I think the visual elements of the video really enhance the emotional impact of the music. The video kind of invites you to engage with the theme of the song and connect with the idea of being trapped in a lifeless reality.” Guitarist Patrick Fleischer adds, “I had planned to create a completely different video where Slaven’s recordings from Iceland would be projected through his head filmed in the studio. However, when I captured Slaven’s lip-sync footage, I was impressed by his ‘psycho look’; he didn’t blink once throughout the entire take, and I was blown away. I decided to change the entire video concept, as this intense gaze conveys the mood of the song ‘Dead Sun’ so effectively, piercing right through you.”

The new debut album by Antirope is entitled Amnesia. The explosive debut release contains eleven emotional songs, and it is scheduled for release on June 30, 2023. Amnesia runs deep and goes hard, tapping into our emotions with beautiful cruelty and authentic heaviness. It is an honest record, a burst of anti-trend, representing the polarity of life in all its aesthetic doom and poetic subtlety. The album is not so much a statement; however, as it is an unfolding narrative, full of passion, peril, climax, and epiphany. It catalogues a journey. It is the story of us. Since the instruments were recorded live, there is an immediacy to this record that vibrates the ribcage. Not since early Led Zeppelin have listeners heard the glorious echo and ring of the cymbals like mysterious sirens coupled with the crunch and pound of the rhythm guitars and the bass, as if Antirope were playing ten feet away from us, shaking the windows, rattling the floorboards, and bumping pictures off the mantle. As for the vocal performance, we have a heartfelt tenor sound produced so close-in that it binds with our breath and the beat of our blood. Spoiler alert: This album is an experience, coming full throttle, no detours, aimed straight for the ear, the head, the heart, and the center of your soul.

The new sonic chapter for MUTUAL HOSTILITY continues, with the US death metallers today unveiling the brutal new single “Lie In Wait”. Stream it HERE.

MUTUAL HOSTILITY will be releasing their new album, “Inhuman Anguish”, on June 28th 2023 via Lethal Scissor Records, making it the band’s debut to the label.

Toilet Ov Hell premiered the first single “Faces in the Walls” at THIS LOCATION.

Following the good feedback received for the “Sacred Propaganda” EP, MUTUAL HOSTILITY waste no time continuing their attack and return with their first full-length. The band have thankfully made no great changes to their juggernaut sound. Dynamic, utterly crushing, immediately memorable, the band’s death metal stick to its guns without de-escalating the branded frenetic motion and interminable aggression.

Drawing inspiration from bands such as Suffocation, Deicide and Gorguts, MUTUAL HOSTILITY create a sound distinctly modern but with an appreciation for the old school death metal legends, all executed with near surgical meticulousness.

Tracklist:

1. Exordium
2. Reality Lens
3. Unknown Echoes
4. Lie In Wait
5. Myth Through Time
6. Faces In The Walls
7. Black Vault
8. Biorhythm
9. Denouement

Pre-orders here.

MUTUAL HOSTILITY is a death metal band formed in January of 2020 in Northeast Ohio, USA. Merging many metal genres into the fold, Adam Rogers (vocals), Dan Gates (guitars & bass) and Eric Frabotta (drums) offer a blend of hostility and intensity.
Most of 2020 was spent writing and recording at each others home during the pandemic shutdown. Soon after the band released a lyric video for the song “Pyramid of Hate” which gained some momentum and eventually led up to the EP titled “Sacred Propaganda” being released in November 2020 on the Cult of Parthenope record label.
In 2022 nine new tracks were written and recorded for the first full-length album.

Line-up:

Dan Gates – Guitars, Bass
Adam Rogers – Vocals
Eric Frabotta – drums
