Avant-garde project THY CATAFALQUE will be releasing its latest opus ‘Alföld,’ via Season of Mist on June 16, 2023. In celebration, THY CATAFALQUE is now releasing the very first track “Néma vermek,” along with a dark and thought-provoking music video. The video can be found at THIS LOCATION.

Mastermind Tamás Kátai comments: “Alföld is the most straight forward and classic extreme metal album the project ever recorded. This time I just wanted to do metal without any innovation or progression, focusing on songs and riffs rather than experimenting and breaking new grounds. Had to let the old ideas out, so I did it with enjoyment. ‘Alföld’ means ‘The Great Plains,’ a massive flat part of South-East Hungary where I was born and raised and we shot the video for ‘Néma vermek’ in the middle of the barren lands, in Makó-Bogárzó.”

Pre-orders for ‘Alföld’ are now available HERE, while the album can be pre-saved HERE

THY CATAFALQUE is a metamorphic entity that’s constantly evolving, showcasing musical ingenuity that’s as limitless as it is daring. Meaning “The Great Plains,” ‘Alföld’ is grounded in the Avant Garde project’s heavy beginnings. While the record takes a cue from THY CATAFALQUE’s early days, mastermind Tamás Kátai’s modern progressive instincts shine through, elevating the record beyond the realm of metal as-you-know-it and once again creating a cutting-edge sound that’s far ahead of its time.

“‘Alföld’ is the most straight forward and classic extreme metal album the project ever recorded,” says mastermind Tamás Kátai. “This time I just wanted to do metal without any innovation or progression, focusing on songs and riffs rather than experimenting and breaking new grounds. Had to let the old ideas out, so I did it with enjoyment. Alföld means The Great Plains, a massive flat part of South-East Hungary where I was born and raised and we shot the video for Néma vermek in the middle of the barren lands, in Makó-Bogárzó.”

Originally, THY CATAFALQUE emerged as a black metal band founded by singer/keyboard player Tamás Kátai with the aid of guitarist/bassist János Juhász. Following their joined debut ‘Sublunary Tragedies’ (1999), the Hungarians evolved into quite different directions, but steadily gaining more followers in the process through the following albums, ‘Microcosmos’ (2001) and the self-released ‘Tűnő idő tárlat’ (2004).

On their fourth full-length, ‘Róka hasa Rádió’ (2009), THY CATAFALQUE invited Ágnes Tóth from neo-folk outfit THE MOON AND THE NIGHTSPIRIT and Attila Bakos to add their haunting vocals. With fifth album ‘Rengeteg’ (2011), Tamás Kátai finally went solo with the help of guest musicians that again included Ágnes Tóth an Attila Bakos. Dubbing his eclectic musical amalgamation avant-garde metal, the Hungarian explored new sonic possibilities with ‘Sgùrr’ (2015). The sixth full-length turned out to be slightly more complex than its successor, ‘Meta’ (2016), which returned to a more direct approach without losing the steadily growing sonic diversity. In 2018, THY CATAFALQUE continued this path with the release of ‘Geometria’. THY CATAFALQUE delivered another spectacular musical mosaic with their ninth full-length entitled ‘Naiv’, inspired by the “Naïve Art” movement.

In 2021, THY CATAFALQUE return with ‘Vadak’. Meaning “Wildlings” in Hungarian, the album title is a deliberate clue to the exotic and feral essence of ‘Vadak.’ Like seedlings scattered throughout the forest by the mere forces of nature, THY CATAFALQUE’s imaginative sound grows with an organic sense of whimsy, cultivated within the vast influences of our megacosm. Thematically, ‘Vadak’ is a foreboding lesson in mortality. Emphasizing the fragility that is shared by man and beast alike, the record explores our Freudian life instincts, in which we inherently fear and run from the ultimate goal of existence: death.

Now, the visionary is looking to the past as it journeys onward and upward with its latest opus, which is just as familiar as it is forward-thinking, certain to mesmerize a vast swath of metal enthusiasts across all genres.

Edinburgh multi-national Electro-rock group RÈNOVATIONS have announced details of their upcoming sophomore album, ‘Blank’, which is set for release 10th June.

To celebrate the news, the band have premiered a new music video for album track ‘Euphoria’.

Watch the official video here:

Rénovations are an electro-rock trio based in Edinburgh, consisting of mainland European members: Charlotte Pulcino (Vocals and Bass) Ioana Pavel (Guitars) and Gian Sudar (Drums and Synths). The trio formed in October 2019 and started writing during the first lockdown of 2020. Inspired by the effects of Brexit, the pandemic, self-isolation, the media and social distancing, they have recorded six singles, one EP, a debut album, and their second album, titled ‘Blank’, (funded by Help Musicians UK) will be released 10th June.

Recorded at Chamber Studios with engineer Graeme Young, ‘Blank’ was self-produced by Rénovations. “The new album is a social, cultural and political commentary, with each song covering a different topic”, the band explain. “Each one of us wrote lyrics on the album, and the specific topics are drawn from personal experience as old as 15 years ago, through to present day.”

‘Blank’ showcases a young band that’s maturing with each music release and is rich, alluring and perfect for listeners looking for something different from the norm. Sonically leaning into pop smarts with vibrant musical landscapes that sweep across classic electronic tones and powerhouse, earworm melodics: Rénovations lyrical social commentary captures a moment in time many listeners will resonate with.

From bullying and taunting, fighting against the clock, COVID testing rooms, cultural 24/7 online habits, and escaping confinement in distressing times; the songs on ‘Blank’ explores the grey that is often hidden between the black and white. Reading between the lines… and then some, this an album for modern times in an age of digital overload. ‘Blank’ is an impressive wall of sound by Rénovations, who are surely destined for big things.

‘Blank’ is released 10th June 2023.

Album Tracklist:

  1. Precious Stone
  2. Bed Is In The Bathroom
  3. Rinse And Wring
  4. Yell
  5. Time Is A Common Problem
  6. Scars
  7. Larguée
  8. Forest
  9. Grind Mentality
  10. Repetitions
  11. Euphoria
  12. Sphere

The back story of Rénovations began with the French singer and bass player: After Charlotte returned from a trip to Thailand in July 2019, she was offered a gig opportunity, but she needed to gather a group of likeminded passionate musicians. She reached out to Italian-born drummer Gian in order to discuss the revival of an old band project. After a few minutes at Edinburgh’s Brass Monkey pub, she convinced him – with the help of beverages – to reunite. A few phone calls and messages later, the line-up was completed with Romanian guitarist Ioana and the band began building their alternative sound, based in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Rénovations are:
Charlotte Pulcino – Bass, Vocals
Ioana Pavel – Electric Guitar
Gian Paolo Sudar – Drums, Synths, Backing Vocals

Ukrainian IGNEA Release Cinematic Second Single + Official Music Video ‘Dunes’

Ukrainian melodic metal band IGNEA takes listeners into cinematic worlds with second single “Dunes”! Having gained many millions of Spotify streams on fan-favorites like “Alga”, “Leviathan” and “Jinnslammer”, the five-piece is ready to release their next masterpiece, the captivating concept album, Dreams of Lands Unseen, out April 28, 2023 via Napalm Records.

With “Dunes”, talented storytellers IGNEA dive into the sweltering realms of the Sahara desert, as far-eastern melodies merge perfectly with hard-hitting riffs. The idea behind this composition was to compare the Sahara Desert with the Carpathian Mountains and so the eastern vibe of the music is paired with traditional Ukrainan melodies and language, which pays tribute to Yablonska’s roots and adventures. The rough screams of highly skilled vocalist Helle Bohdanova kick off the track, providing contrast to the song’s feathery, dreamy melodies. After winning categories at The Best Ukrainian Metal Act Awards (including “Best Ukrainian Metal Act 2020”), IGNEA have already earned their status as a band-to-watch, and the upcoming cinematic concept album Dreams of Lands Unseen will exceed all expectations, inviting the listener to follow them into new worlds!

Vocalist Helle Bohdanova about “Dunes”:
“We continue telling the story of the amazing Ukrainian travel writer and photographer Sofia Yablonska who lived in the XX century. “Dunes” is inspired by her adventure to the Sahara Desert.
On this dangerous journey, Sofia’s driver fainted from the intense heat, so she had to take charge of driving and also fix the overheated engine herself. Their troubles didn’t end there, as they also had to escape from hostile locals who tried to shoot them.
Our song describes how Sofia saw a mirage, so common in the desert. In our version, instead of imagining palm trees and an oasis, she saw the chilly Carpathian mountains with pine trees and rainfalls…”

The 10-track concept album, Dreams of Lands Unseen, reflects the life of Ukrainian photographer and documentarian Sofia Yablonska, known for traveling to very distant corners of the world while documenting the lives of tribes and natives, which was especially dangerous and uncommon for a woman of her time. Sonically, IGNEA creates a captivating masterpiece which resembles, thanks in part to diverse genre-influences, an epic soundtrack-like experience. Producing, mixing and mastering was helmed by Max Morton (Jinjer, Morton) whilst Dmitry Kim managed engineering and drum production. The track “Daleki Obriyi” is only one of two songs on the album sung in Ukrainian language, honoring their home country and mother tongue. Implying distant horizons, the album’s subject, Sofia, is now far away from modern human civilization. Brutal death metal rhythms and shouts crash together with catchy synth passages, representing the beauty of the islands. Ready to move on, Sofia sails to the next country – spending so much time on the water, it becomes her “Incurable Disease”. Carried away by the gleeful synth-sounds of the sea and turbulent, pounding waves, it creates an extraordinary voyage. Songs like “The Golden Shell” and “Opiumist” – the latter featuring Finnish vocalist Tuomas Saukkonen of Wolfheart – are an ode to Yablonska’s experiences she gathered in Chinese culture. Cheery eastern melodies and brutal growls create the atmosphere of a heavy trip. On “Nomad’s Luck”, restless guitar riffs mixed with powerful deep shouts create an ominous sound – a symbol of the constant questioning of one’s lifetime.

REVOLTONS Announce New Album “Celestial Violence”, Out on May 12th

Long-running Italian heavy metallers REVOLTONS will release their seventh studio album “Celestial Violence” on May 12th 2023 via Sleazy Rider Records.

The band explains:
“Given what humanity has been through in the last three years, this seemed to us the most appropriate title for an album whose sound and lyrics were born during the lockdowns. The songs describe both personal events (ruined relationships, deaths or suicides of loved ones and surreal situations) and general ideas about what happened in these three years and what reality is. In particular the tetralogy ‘The Game’-‘Reality is a Crime’-‘Spiritual Monster’-‘Cosmic Disabled’ describes what we mean by celestial violence. It is the story of a spiritual seeker who is facing this period and who is well aware that there is no creator God who created this delirium but that God is what resides within us and unites us all. We are all one and therefore we are all accomplices to what has happened and has always happened and cannot take refuge behind futile, pathetic and unrealizable conspiracy theories. He knows that reality is a play of forces where everyone participates, and that humanity is at a low stage of its evolution and that to improve the world it must first of all improve itself. It is his love and hate relationship with ‘god’, that is, with himself and his limitations. Ultimately it is humanity that has raped the planet. We are divine beings at a very low evolutionary stage. We still have a long way to go.”

The track listening reads as follows
1. 2020 Alternative
2. Escape or Drown
3. Generation Mask
4. The Darkfall
5. Nany John Skennon
6. Low Ranking Businessman
7. The Game
8. Reality is a Crime
9. Spiritual Monster
10. Cosmic Disabled
11. Lockdown Diaries
12. Violentia Patris Caelestis?

“Celestial Violence” was produced and mastered by Ivan Moni Bidin and Christopher Burelli at Artesonika Studio.

The artwork was designed by REVOLTONS’ bass player Simone Sut at N.B.S. Imagination & Design.

REVOLTONS are:
Antonio Boscari: Vocals
Alex Corona: Guitars
Carlo Venuti: Guitars
Elvis Ortolan: Drums
Simone “Zimon” Sut: Bass

PAUL GILBERT Releases New Track ‘Man On A Mountain’

Posted by tarjavirmakari on March 22, 2023

PAUL GILBERT’s new “The Dio Album” will be released on April 7th via Music Theories Recordings/Mascot Label Group.

Paul Gilbert says this about the song, “Man on the Silver Mountain” has one of my favorite Ritchie Blackmore “plucked” guitar riffs. And of course, Ronnie James Dio’s vocal shine throughout. To me, the lyrics seem more metaphorical than literal, and playing them on guitar rides these metaphors further into the realms of imagination. I imagine Ronnie, transported 3000 years ago in history, running great distances to deliver a message of great importance to the ears of the great desert pharaoh. The message can only be sung. The wise king listens. The kingdom is saved. Ronnie takes his leave, and leads a song of celebration at the great feast! Great heroic music, for sure!”

Check out the visual for Man On A Mountain here:

It was pure chance that led Paul Gilbert to recording the music heard on latest release The Dio Album. The American guitar virtuoso, best known for his masterful fretwork in chart-topping hard rockers Mr. Big and high-octane trailblazers Racer X – as well as numerous solo records – was in his car when he saw something that made his heart start beating faster in a moment of unexpected, unadulterated joy. This was not a high value item of interest or even particularly rare, simply a baseball cap with the word ‘Dio’ emblazoned across the front. Sometimes, even for the biggest of guitar legends, it’s the little things that hit us in the most profound ways.

On his drive home, a plan was being formulated. Why not capture all of that raw energy and excitement on an album devoted to Ronnie James Dio’s most celebrated tracks – spanning across his career from Rainbow to Black Sabbath and the singer’s own solo endeavours? Gilbert is no stranger to instrumental music, but an entire album dedicated to replicating well established and world-famous vocal melodies on his trusty six-string genuinely felt like new territory. This was already shaping up to be a challenge that he would truly relish.

It would be fair to say human voices don’t come much more magical than Ronnie James Dio’s. He was a man who brought a sense of classical finesse to loud and heavy music, ultimately laying down the blueprint for generations and generations of rock singers to come. Taking on the daunting challenge of mimicking those distinguished vocal lines down to a tee – each legendary performance decorated with its own idiosyncrasies and nuances – actually involved unlearning some of the technical precision that turned Gilbert into a household name for guitar players in the first place.

The Dio Album consists of 10 standout and career-defining tracks, from “Neon Knights” and “Long Live Rock ‘N’ Roll” to “Holy Diver” and “Man On The Silver Mountain”. As well as analysing Ronnie James Dio’s electrifying vocal melodies, Paul also enjoyed paying tribute to three incredibly talented guitar legends – Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath, Ritchie Blackmore of Rainbow and Vivian Campbell from the Dio band, who has been a member of British stadium rockers Def Leppard since 1992.

“Playing all these metal riffs like “Stand Up And Shout”, “Neon Knights” and “Kill The King” gave me serious chills,” grins Paul. “The guitar parts of Ritchie, Tony and Vivian brought no small number of goosebumps.” “These amazing riffs are the steel girders of the songs, upon which everything else rests,” smiles Paul. “It had been a while since I’d been this deep into metal rhythm guitar playing, and it felt like I was digging up gold nuggets of fire with a magic platinum shovel. All while wearing a star-covered wizard hat! The guitar solos in these songs came screaming from distant mountaintops. Ritchie, Tony, and Vivian set the standard breathtakingly high.”

Engineered by Zach Bloomstein with Paul handling all of the instrumentation, save for Bill Ray’s inspired drum work, The Dio Album is undoubtedly the most sonically accurate tribute to the songs that made Ronnie James Dio a bona fide rock and roll legend. In order to truly hone in on the late singer’s essence, Paul Gilbert dissected many of the melodies line by line, throwing every inch of himself into the music. It was the only way to capture every ounce of the energy and emotion.

“Just like he sang: ‘The world is full of kings and queens who blind your eyes and steal your dreams… it’s Heaven and Hell!’ Thank you, Ronnie, and long live rock and roll.”

Track list

  1. Neon Knights
  2. Kill The King
