50 Years Of Punk – And EATER Are Here to Whet Your Appetite for The Next Half Century

Posted by tarjavirmakari on July 14, 2026
Posted in: Int. News, News. Tagged: 50 Years Of Punk, Cleopatra Records, EATER. Leave a comment

It’s 50 years since punk rock first arose from the streets of London to mortify great swathes of polite British society.  50 years since The Damned released their debut single, “New Rose,” in October 1976.  And 50 years since a bunch of school kids formed a band called Eater, and horrified the nation’s tabloid press, because what were three 15-year-olds and a 13-year-old drummer doing in a pop group?  Shouldn’t they have been in school?

Punk rock was already being described as the sound of disaffected youth. Compared to most of their contemporaries and great swathes of their audience, Eater were that same disaffection personified.

In their original form, Eater released just one album and a handful of singles. But they were regulars at the legendary punk Mecca of The Roxy, and similarly-inclined venues across the UK, and though the band broke up in 1978, frontman Andy Blade has kept the flag flying by overseeing the release of a clutch of archive recordings, before finally reconvening Eater and, last year, delivering Duplication – the ultimate soundtrack of what was happening all around them?

“The tracks on Duplication are essentially my favourite songs out of the seminal punk classics,” explains Blade, “before punk rock became somewhat homogenized as a formula. Whilst it is a covers album  – it is not just a covers album.

“There is a difference because I was ‘there’ with my band during the explosive year of 1977 –  these songs mean something to me in a visceral sense. There’s a spirit to the tracks that seems to come alive as we rehearsed them. Most importantly, however, Duplication was great fun to create and I think, as a result, it is – I hope – great fun to listen to.”

It is. Ten songs make up the album, and to call it punk rock’s greatest hits is almost an understatement.  We are locked wholly into 1976-1977, with The Ramones’“Beat On The Brat” and The Damned’s “New Rose” both hearkening back to that earlier year.   “New Rose,” in fact, was the first British punk single ever released!  And Eater’s own debut, “Outside View” – also included here, was the third.

From thereon, The Buzzcocks, Generation X, the Saints, the Clash, Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers and the Only Ones flash past, but Blade cautions the listener not to expect simple note-perfect renditions of these doughty old warriors.

“A lot of thought and a lot of love went into this album from choosing the songs, recording them, to deciding on a sleeve. The thing about Duplication is that we are not really trying to duplicate anything. In a way we’re taking the piss out of this nostalgia fetish.

“All the songs are quite faithful to the originals, but I do tend to ‘own’ songs when I sing them, so I have taken some liberties.”

This is especially apparent on the band’s incendiary take on what is probably the most “punk” song of them all, The Sex Pistols’ “God Save The Queen”… released to coincide with Her Majesty’s silver jubilee, and accompanied by several tidal waves of media condemnation, not to mention physical attacks on the band members and a blanket broadcasting ban. Some retailers refused to stock the record, others omitted its name from the Top 30 chart run down. Has any piece of plastic ever caused so much fuss?

Eater shared producers with the Pistols for a time – Dave Goodman, who handled their early singles and debut album, also oversaw three of the Pistols’ demo sessions, including their very first, in July 1976, and the January 1977 session which brought the band their second record deal (after they were sacked by EMI) with A&M Records.  (Who also sacked them, but that’s another story.)

And Eater got to hear all the demos, including “God Save The Queen” – although, at that time, it was still called “No Future.”

Blade explains, “. My only problem with the song was the first bridge – ‘don’t be told what you want’ etc. It didn’t scan and, to my mind, it made Johnny Rotten sound like an old time British comedian called Norman Wisdom. Uncool.

“But the second bridge – ‘when there’s no future how can there be sin, we’re the flowers in the dustbin’ was genius, and I always wondered why they didn’t just use the second bridge twice, like first time round and second time. So when we came to record it, I knew what I had to do – terribly sorry about that,  Rotten/Jones/Matlock/Cook!”

It’s unlikely the song’s progenitors will be offended.  Sex Pistols covers might be ten-a-penny, but how many (don’t even try to answer this) simply Xerox the original, with the only the occasional misheard lyric to distinguish them?

Eater retain the energy, the scorn and the anger that fueled the now-nearly half-century old original.  But they add that same indefinable spark of volume, rage and yes, rebellious youth that was always the hallmark of Eater in their prime. And long may it remain so.

Meanwhile, punk’s 50 year celebration charges on, and Cleopatra Records joins the party with a catalog brimming with first wave punk rock giants.

From The Damned to Johnny Thunders & The Heartbreakers, and ex-Runaway Cherie Currie to the Dead Boys (whose own latest release, the live Time Warp Baby is released on June 12);  from The Members and The Vibrators to 999, and The Skids, brilliant new releases and precious archive treasures alike have lit up the shelves, and every month through 2026, Cleopatra Records will be spotlighting a fresh classic from the catalog.

Last time around it was Leonard Graves’ favorite Dickies’s live recording As It Was. Next month… hmm.  Wait and see.  But this month, we raise a glass to Eater, not only for what they did back then, but also for the fact that they’re still doing it.  And they’re still a fantastic band, as well.

BOCC Announce Sophomore Album “Demolarium”, Out September 11th

Posted by tarjavirmakari on July 14, 2026
Posted in: Int. News, News. Tagged: BOCC. Leave a comment

Barcelona-based death-doom outfit BOCC are set to unleash their second full-length album, “Demolarium”, on September 11, 2026 via Night Terrors Records.

The title-track is now streaming HERE.

Formed in 2019 in Catalonia, BOCC have carved their own path through the underground with a crushing and uncompromising blend of death metal, funeral doom weight, sludge hostility and crust punk aggression. Their sound captures the raw spirit of extreme music at its most authentic: bleak, filthy and deeply rooted in the traditions of the underground.

“Demolarium” is a record built on density and decay, where the suffocating slow-motion devastation of death-doom collides with the rough edges and confrontational energy of punk. A harsh and visceral journey that carries the feeling of a live rehearsal room rather than a polished studio product – a testament to the band’s commitment to keeping their music direct, heavy and real.

BOCC’s lyrics, entirely written and performed in Catalan, move away from conventional extreme metal themes, drawing instead from the history, folklore, myths and macabre events of Catalonia and Barcelona. Their music reflects a deep connection with their roots, while also standing firmly within the anti-fascist movement that has shaped their identity since the beginning.

For fans of Coffins, Grief, Autopsy, Winter, Fistula, Cianide and Eyehategod, “Demolarium” delivers a bleak and punishing vision where death metal brutality meets the hopeless weight of doom and the raw spirit of crust.

Night Terrors Records will release the album on colored and black vinyl editions, accompanied by a limited edition fanzine entirely dedicated to BOCC, continuing the label’s tradition of celebrating the artists beyond the music itself.

BOCC will also bring their crushing live assault to CastellHell Reborns in Spain in October 2026, sharing the stage with acts including Dead Congregation, Galvanizer, Benighted and Cerebral Curse.

Tracklist:

1. Demolarium
2. Estigma
3. Escorxador
4. 4227
5. Calvari (Dels Condemnats)
6. Ànima D’Acer

Line-up:

Emilio – Guitars / Vocals
Andreu – Bass / Vocals

TUOMAS ROUNAKARI’s New Official Video for ‘Bear Awakening – First Morning’ Out Now, Celebrating Day of the Bear & Natural Point of Midsummer

Renowned Finnish violinist, composer, and ethnomusicologist TUOMAS ROUNAKARI has released his new official video for ‘Bear Awakening – First Morning’ celebrating the Day of the Bear & Natural Point of Midsummer!

Tuomas shared:
“I am so pleased to inform about this premier of a new music video, today on July 13th, which was traditionally considered the day of the Bear, the natural point of a Midsummer. Solstices were celebrated separately. Here in the Nordic countries solstice is early, summer has only began, birds still nesting, many flowers not yet in bloom. But instead, July 13th is the midpoint of summer on the land based calendar. For us, that calendar used to follow the bear in pre-christian times.
The video production began when Antti Pentikäinen filmed my live performance of the Bear Awakening song First Morning at an ancient ritual ground. The concert took place at the Heinäveden Muinaisviikot Festival in Finland last July.
This video is finally something that catches the essence of my art and animist spirituality. I am so grateful for the work Antti Pentikäinen put together, in the most effortless of productions ever. This video wanted to manifest itself. The video includes also footage with a bear, filmed in Sweden in 2014 by a Björn Ola Lind and Torkel Lundgren, the same bear that appeard on the images of Bear Awakener album.
Love, Tuomas Rounakari”

More information on Tuomas:

Tuomas Rounakari is a Finnish violinist, composer, and ethnomusicologist known for his trance-inducing solo performances that blend violin, vocals, stomping, and ankle bells into a visceral one-man ritual. A former member of Korpiklaani (2012–2022) and collaborator in Yasuharu Takanashi’s Far East Groove, Tuomas also plays the traditional Khanty bowed instrument Ning-juh.

His doctoral research (2024) focuses on altered states of consciousness through music—a phenomenon tied to sacred song traditions worldwide. This inquiry informs his performance style, which often crosses into trance and ceremony.

Tuomas draws inspiration from dialogues between humanity and nature, the visible and invisible, the ancient and the future. His debut solo album Shamanviolin was born from studying early 20th-century wax-cylinder recordings from Siberia. Performing these songs with the Indigenous communities from which they originated led to long-term collaborations with Khanty, Mansi, Sámi, and Greenlandic artists.

With over 30 albums to his name—including two solo records and four with Korpiklaani (over 34 million Spotify streams annually)—his work spans folk, metal, blues, free jazz, and avant-garde electroacoustic soundscapes.

His latest solo album, Bear Awakener (2022), is a sonic invocation, an awakening of the wild spirit within. Each track stirs ancient memory, calling forth the slumbering forces of nature, myth, and spirit.
The album centers on bear-related ceremonial songs from Khanty, Mansi, Carelian, and Finnish traditions. These songs carry the resonance of ancestors who lived in deep, reciprocal relationships with the land—cultures rooted in sustainability, self-sufficiency, and sacred balance. For Tuomas, they are living teachings, not just songs.
Rooted in ancestral songlines and shaped by trance, Bear Awakener invites listeners into deeper dialogue with the unseen, the more-than-human, and the mythic. It is a reawakening of spirit and a reconnection to something older than memory, yet urgently needed in our time.

Bay Area Thrash Legends HEATHEN Cover Iron Maiden’s ‘The Prisoner’ for 50th Anniversary

“Not a prisoner, I’m a free man” – Iron Maiden’s “The Prisoner”

Quickly following their triumphant returning single “Never A God” earlier this year, Bay Area thrash legends HEATHEN break back out with another offering.

In celebration of the mighty Iron Maiden’s 50th anniversary, HEATHEN has taken a stab at the Number of The Beast classic, “The Prisoner”. Pulling samples from the TV show of the same name, enlisting artist Dan Goldsworthy (known for his work with Accept, Inhuman Condition, and Haken) to Eddie-ify the goblin from “Goblin’s Blade”—a callback to their HEATHEN’s 1987 record Breaking The Silence—and reworking their logo to look like Maiden’s, HEATHEN pull out all the stops to ensure this was more than just homage. Performing the track with a studied reverence for the subject material, HEATHEN unleashes metal greatness with a modern edge and seasoned orchestration.

About the track guitarist Kragen Lum says:
“What can we say about the legendary Iron Maiden that hasn’t already been said? They’ve given us 50 years of energetic, melodic metal that’s inspired HEATHEN and legions of other bands in the genre. “The Prisoner” was an easy choice for us to cover, with its heavy intro, up-tempo verses, catchy chorus, and classic instrumental section. We added a few touches to “Heathenize” the song while staying true to what made it so great when it was first released in 1982. Enjoy this recording as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of one of heavy metal’s greatest bands. Up the Irons!”

This cover comes right in time for the band’s extensive North American tour encompassing two legs. The first opening for fellow thrash greats Metal Church, followed by a string of headlining dates over Louisiana horror thrashers Void. Kicking off July 17 in Derry, NH the tour supporting Metal Church will hit a series of major cities including Montreal, QC, Pittsburgh, PA, and Rochester, NY before its conclusion July 26 in Leesburg, VA. Not missing a beat, HEATHEN picks up Void for their headline run kicking off the next day in Raleigh, NC on July 27. The headline run will hit a slew of intimate venues in major cities including Atlanta, GA, Philadelphia, PA, Milwaukee, WI, and Detroit, MI before wrapping up on August 9 in Toronto, ON.

About the tour the band says:
“We’re stoked to join the legendary Metal Church on this short tour of the Northeastern U.S. and Canada. We’ll be bringing our A-game for these shows before heading out on a run of headlining dates across the Midwest, Northeast, and Canada with the killer Void as direct support. We’ve put together a set packed with classics, fan favorites, and a few surprises that you won’t want to miss. Grab your tickets, and we’ll see you in the pit!”
