This Friday, March 24, 2023, melodic death doom collective MARIANAS REST will celebrate the release of their fourth studio album, entitled Auer, via Napalm Records.
Hailing from the coastal town of Kotka, MARIANAS REST embodies the Finnish melancholy and sadness of a cold, harsh winter landscape in absolute grandeur. Formed in 2013, the band around Jaakko Mäntymaa on vocals and Omnium Gatherum’s Aapo Koivisto (keys) took the heavy music scene by storm with the release of their impressive 2016 debut, Horror Vacui. Just in time to celebrate their 10th band anniversary, MARIANAS REST unleashes their fourth studio epos, which couldn’t be more multifaceted.
But give ear, following previously-released album tracks “Diseased” and the haunting ‘Sirens”, featuring MY DYING BRIDE’s frontman Aaron Stainthorpe on guest vocals, today, MARIANAS REST have unleashed a music video for their final single, the colossal “Light Reveals Our Wounds!”
“The world needs martyrs. This song is dedicated to those who ever tried to steer the course of humanity for the better knowing their actions came with a terrible cost. To everyone who had the strength to march against the coming storm.” Vocalist Jaakko Mäntymaa comments.
“The idea of this song was to have a simple melodic theme and just let it play through the whole song. It repeats and repeats, changes shape and transforms but it never goes away. Like painful memories.”
Bassist Niko Lindman adds: “Light Reveals Our Wounds” was the last song we made for the album. From a structural point of view, it’s maybe quite traditional with a simple hook. However, if one gives it a couple of extra spins, there is actually a lot going on. For example, I do not recall any song where multiple bass tracks are playing simultaneously.”
With their upcoming magnum opus, MARIANAS REST prove that death metal does not always need fast-paced riffage and thunderous blast beats – they spice up their dark mood with a heavy dose of doom and a significant black metal touch, to deliver a colossal sound and new piece of pure art: Auer is epic, heavy, sad and bleak; its overall melancholic yet brutal riffs, mesmerizing auditory colors and immersive vocals will hit you deep in your core. It’s a heavy ride through a disturbing yet beautiful sound landscape that only a Finnish band like MARIANAS REST can create, while always keeping you warm and welcome yet haunted and hopeless.
Auerwas recorded and mixed by Teemu Aalto at Teemu Aalto Music Productions, and was mastered by Svante Forsbäck at Chartmakers. Out this Friday, March 24, 2023 on Napalm Records, the band’s forthcoming offering will establish the name of MARIANAS REST as one of the most enthralling, remarkable and exceptional melodic death and blackened doom metal bands of modern times!
Canada’s The Metal Voice recently interviews Heloween singer Michael Kiske. In the chat Michael Kiske spoke about the bands upcoming tour as well as Helloween working on new music and his first strange encounter with Whitesnake’s singer David Coverdale.
Michael Kiske was asked about if Helloween was working on new music he replied, “Actually, 10 days ago, or maybe a week ago, Kai (Hansen) has sent me a demo of a song that he was (working on) that I was very happy about, because it’s not what you would expect; the song was a bit outside of the box, which I am always grateful for. I always thought that was exciting about Helloween.” Kiske continued,”I know that Andi has songs, and I know that Kai has a whole bunch of songs. He was a bit lazy last time; he only had that one great song, ‘Skyfall’, which was maybe good for three songs and that’s why it’s justified but I would have wished for even more from him. And I think this time he will be presenting a whole bunch of songs more. At least that’s my impression, the feeling that I have, there might be more coming from him this time. Andi is always in the game. Andi has this gift; he can just sit down and write 10 songs. He can just do it. I don’t know how he does it.”
Kiske was then asked if he would be contributing to the new music since he did not write on the last record he said,” I don’t know. I’m not so much of a metal songwriter. I was when I was a teenager. But these days I just don’t write metal songs; I just write songs on acoustic guitar somehow. And if I have something where I feel like the band could make a Helloween song out of it, of course I will present it to them, and then if they get a kick out of it, something’s gonna happen. But we have so many songwriters in this band now. And they’re all really capable of writing that sort of material that everybody loves, and that’s mainly Andi (Deris), Sascha (Gerstner), Weiki and Hansen. And I think that’s more than enough. If I have an idea, I sneak it in. But I don’t really push myself.”
“Bring the boys back home” – sung by Pink Floyd some 44 years ago and a sentence which could be a theme for Mighty Music to sign the Danish thrash-prog/power metal act MANTICORA for what will be their 10th release in a career, spanning more than three decades (debut album in 1999).
Manticora has been signed to labels from both Greece, Italy, Germany and Sweden, and now it’s time to return back to their motherland and to the largest Danish record label within the metal world.
Set for a release in January 2024, Manticora is right now adding the finishing touches on their new album. A tour de force in the unique blend of what has become the Manticora trademark style. Sounding like no other, as musical inspiration is gathered from anywhere, but still fitting along the lines of acts, like Nevermore, Savatage, Slayer, Blind Guardian and even Metallica. This 10th album is an uncompromising statement of perseverance, talent and undying motivation.
Kasper Gram, Bass, explains:
“We are VERY thrilled to announce, that we have signed a worldwide deal with Mighty Music for the release of our next album!
Signing with Mighty Music is definitely the right decision for us as a band, since they’re already taking care of our bookings on Danish territory and doing a great job.
They’re also a Copenhagen-based company which gives us the opportunity for a really close, efficient and constructive collaboration that we are very much looking forward to!”
Manticora was formed in 1997 by Lars F. Larsen (vocals), Kristian Larsen (guitars) and Mads Volf (drums) – the young guys laying the foundation of the Manticora-trademark sound; hard hitting progressive power metal with both epic and thrash elements. In the early days the band was a foursome but with a round of line-up changes, the band, which includes long-time members Kasper Gram (bass) and Stefan Johansson (guitars) were established as a five-piece.
In 1999 the debut full-length disc, “Roots Of Eternity” was released, and received a tremendously good response from both media and fans around the world. Since then, eight more critically acclaimed albums were released over the following two decades, establishing Manticora as one of the most respected bands in the European progressive power metal scene.
Over the years, the band has played countless tours and has stepped on the biggest festivals’ stages, including Wacken Open Air, Sweden Rock Festival and Copenhell.
With a year of writing, tuning and concept-developing, Manticora is ready to record their 10th album and is also signing a record deal with the Danish label Mighty Music for the release. Manticora is finally returning to their home country.

German black-doom metallers MORIBUND MANTRAS will be releasing their new album, “…of Fathomless Depths”, on April 14th 2023 via Argento Records.
The band is now premiering the new single “Shore of Knowledge” at Toilet Ov Hell. Stream it HERE.
With an inception going back 13 years in time, German entity MORIBUND MANTRAS has summoned a poignant blend of Doom, Black, and Post-Metal throughout two full-length records and three EPs, ever refined in its expressive touch and ardor.
Now, following the colossal opus entitled “Golden Void”, the German quintet stares back into the abyss with five new mantras of roaring occult force, a fiery extended play aptly branded “…of Fathomless Depths”. Diving into deep spheres, one faces penetrating layers of sound, chilling mammoth riffs carrying the weight of the world, whether through vicious heaviness or heart-stirring bursts of melody.
MORIBUND MANTRAS enter the soul of the listener as it surrenders its spirit. “…of Fathomless Depths” marks the first time the group recorded and mixed its songs by themselves and the intensity of the awareness to the detail fully enhances MORIBUND MANTRAS’ vision.
Varied, tense, and highly expressive, these sonic endeavors are manifested through one particularly organic and utterly dynamic rhythmic section which, with the complicity of the riffing electrical storm, casts an aura of dreamy solemnity. On top of such instrumental traits, a voice from the nether regions screams the pressure of human existence, the man’s search for his destiny, guided by his dreams, in eternal pursuit for enlightenment.
