Unsettling: it’s a word which can be used to describe a good swathe of the music which has come from the mind of Greg Mackintosh over the years, but in the context of Strigoi, it feels particularly apt.

Formed immediately after previous side project Vallenfyre had run its course, Strigoi found Greg and Vallenfyre bassist Chris Casket reconfiguring the aesthetics of that band. Their 2019 debut, Abandon All Faith, was a notable transition, taking the crust punk, death metal and grind influences which had defined Vallenfyre and deriving from those an extreme music amalgam which was altogether more…well, unsettling.

But if Abandon All Faith was a record where the memory of Vallenfyre exerted an inevitable, but important, influence, then second album Viscera is where Strigoi define and express themselves on their own terms.

“It’s the second album and we’re pushing those limits,” says Chris Casket. “The longer songs are longer; the shorter songs are shorter. It’s fully realising the concept. When we did the first album, there were certain expectations as we were coming from Vallenfyre. I felt that it was a really good transition from one to the other. But I feel that with this record, it’s more of a fully fleshed out concept. It’s pushing the light and shade further out.”

“The first album was us giving it its own identity separate from Vallenfyre, even though it’s kind of an obvious continuation, in a way,” adds Greg. “But with Viscera, it’s a combination of pushing the envelope a little bit, making it a bit less raw. Because, we had done that to the Nth degree with Vallenfyre. I’d also say there’s a bit of sound design in there, too, to make it very creepy and, yes, unsettling, sound wise.”

With Covid thwarting Strigoi’s plans to do shows to promote Abandon All Faith, Greg and Chris used the down-time to work on what would eventually become Viscera.

“We have a strange way of working,” says Chris. “I will send words, prose, whatever it may be to Greg. He likes that process, because he reads what I’ve written and it inspires the music he comes up with. I’ve never worked that way before. But that and the added time we had, the space away from things, is what I think has made Viscera what it is.”

Greg adds, “If it’s a song where Chris’ lyrics sound angry, I’ll do a song that’s more, I guess, grounded in the essence of early grindcore. Something that expresses that mood. But if it’s something more sombre or unnerving, then I’ll start with a bit of sound design and work towards riffs. I’ve always thought of music in terms of visuals, and that might come from the lyrics. The last song on the album, ‘Iron Lung’, for example: I actually said to Chris that I had an idea for a song where it feels that you can’t breathe, that it feels like you’ve got a weight on your chest. And the result is probably the toughest going song on the record to get through. But I think it does get that across.”

Viscera, then, clearly defines the Strigoi sound and vision – as Chris says, it’s a “mix tape of misery” and points at ways in which the band may develop in the years ahead.

“I get bored easily,” Greg laughs. “I’ve got a very short attention span. I love doom metal, I love funeral doom, crust punk, grindcore…all these things. But usually after two songs of each I’m thinking, ‘Right, what’s next?’ And that’s my problem, but it does determine what this band and this music is like.”

“There’s not much light on this record at all. If there’s any, it’s there just to emphasise how dark the shade is, really. And what I loved about early death metal, which is when I got into it, is that everything had its own feel back then. That was at the back of my mind the whole time when making Viscera – that I wanted to give it its own feel. But the listeners are going to have to decide whether that was successful or not.”

Brazilian TUATHA DE DANANN ended the year 2022 with the release of their new single and music video, “The Nameless”. the song shows a band that knew how to reconnect with its past, even though it continues to constantly evolve its sound, experiencing one of the creative peaks of the band close to completing 30 years on the road. The music video for “The Nameless” was produced by Raoni Joseph, with footage by Daniel Toli and Simão Domingos.

The external recordings were made at the roundabout in the Minas Gerais town of Ribeirão Vermelho, located in Campo das Vertentes. click here to watch the music video the song anticipates the next Tuatha de Danann album, the band’s eighth full length album, which should be released in the first half of 2023, and which according to vocalist and multiinstrumentalist Bruno Maia, contains elements not so common in the most recent production of the band, but that doesn’t distance them from the genre they pioneered, folk metal.

“it is a more dark, dramatic and emotional song, which evokes some influences that we have used since the beginning of the band”, highlighted Bruno Maia.

The release of “The Nameless” was accompanied by a merchandising kit based on its beautiful cover art, created by Rodrigo Barbieri, now available for sale on the band’s website. “The Nameless” lyrics discuss about social and historical issues, and one of its inspirations is the german philosopher Walter Benjamin and his ‘Theses on the Concept of History’.

Bruno comments “in the lyrics we try to bring the excluded, dominated and defeated to the center and focus of the work. For Benjamin it is only possible to have real justice if there is historical and memory justice. this song, both the voice melodies, settings and letter finds its greatest inspiration in some of these theses.

DEWOLFF Release New Single + Video ‘Night Train’

Today, the Dutch rock band DeWolff have unleashed the next single and opening track from their new album ‘Love, Death & In Between,’ out February 3rd via Mascot Records / Mascot Label Group. Recalling classic hits like “Love Train” by The O’Jays, “Night Train” is a joyous roof-raiser that deftly blends psychedelic southern rock with classic soul & R&B. Watch the official music video for “Night Train” here.

“Night Train” follows the album’s previous singles “Counterfeit Love,” which the band called “the most Zeppelin-esque thing we ever recorded,” and “Heart Stopping Kinda Show,” which was released just after the band finished up a 13-date run with The Black Crowes across mainland Europe. ‘Love, Death & In Between’ is a reaction to the band’s previous two studio albums: ‘Tascam Tapes,’ which was recorded on the road with a four-track cassette recorder from the 1980s, and their socially distanced recording ‘Wolffpack,’ which debuted at #2 on the Dutch charts. “For this, we wanted to do something with people,” singer/guitarist Pablo van de Poel recalls – “as many people as possible.”

The lightning strike moment for ‘Love, Death & In Between’ came via Memphis. “In 2019, I attended a sermon by Al Green at his own church, and it was a life-changing experience, musically,” Pablo remembers. In May 2022, they went to Kerwax, an analogue studio in the village of Loguivy-Plougras in Brittany. “We thought, let’s go on an adventure,” he says. Located in Northwestern France and surrounded by forests, they retreated to the residential studio for two weeks, engulfed in vintage recording equipment from the 1940s to the 1970s.

Recording live to tape, with no overdubs, brothers Pablo (guitar/vocals) and Luka van de Poel (drums/vocals) alongside Robin Piso (Hammond/Wurlitzer) were joined by a host of friends for the recording. The themes on the album were partly inspired by novels from 20th-century American authors, particularly John Steinbeck’s Tortilla Flat. “There is a quote from him, ‘The good story lay in half-told things which must be filled in out of the hearer’s own experience,’ and that was something I really wanted to do with lyrics on this record.” At the same time, the band was diving deep into old soul and R&B records – Sam Cooke, The Impressions, The Coasters, The Clovers, Ray Charles and Little Richard, as well as a heavy dose of gospel – The Soul Stirrers, Al Green and early records by The Staple Singers.

“Counterfeit Love,” wears its heart on its sleeve, whereas the 16-minute “Rosita” shows their progression. “How I want to write now, is more reflected in songs like this,” he says. “I wanted those lyrics to feel like a story, but also a journey within itself.” “Heart Stopping Kinda Show” is “how I see life,” he adds. “Life is the heart-stopping kinda show. I was writing with Tortilla Flat in mind. These characters are not constantly overthinking things; they live, drink wine, and have these beautiful moments. They are doing the ultimate living. In the song, I wanted to describe the things in life that are beautiful.” “Will o’ the Wisp” has a seductive darkness, whilst “Night Train,” “Message for my Baby”, and “Wontcha Wontcha” are joyous roof-raisers.

Out of the rural surroundings of Brittany, DeWolff left with twelve songs, over four tapes, with friends, having fun and remembering what is most important to them. On a diet of Al Green, Sam Cooke, and John Steinbeck, they’ve created some of their most soulful but rousing music. When they sing, “Hey there baby won’t you come on in, I got plenty of old records that we can play, some rhythm & blues, some old rock ‘n roll, yes, the type of stuff that can save a soul”, you better get ready for that heart-stopping kinda show.

Stay tuned for continued updates.

From the producer of the acclaimed release “Guitars For Wounded Warriors” comes a brand new extraordinary album entitled “Brothers In Arms”! Vintage Guitar Magazine says about Brian Tarquin & Heavy Friends “Brothers In Arms”: “The players here are staggeringly skilled and the tunes are new and vibrant. Each cut has something new and adventurous to add to our listening experience. Guitarists should be in heaven with this one, as it is definitely good to the last drop.”

For the past 30 years multi-Emmy award winning composer/guitarist Brian Tarquin’s music has been heard by tens of millions on a plethora of television and film scores such as: CSI, Ellen, Extra, TMZ, 60 Minutes, Sex and the City, SNL, Godzilla, Seinfeld, Cheers, Charmed, The Watcher (Keanu Reeves), Desert Heat (Van Damme), The Sender (R. Lee Ermey) to name a few. He has won 3 Emmys for “Outstanding Achievement in Music Direction and Composition for a Drama Series” and has been nominated for an Emmy 6 times. Tarquin has appeared on 50 releases, selling over 140,000 records in his career with over 34 million streams on Spotify, Pandora & Apple.

Says Brian, “It was a great experience to record the album featuring such great musicians. I recorded and produced it entirely at my recording facility called Jungle Room Studios. It is an extensive analog/digital studio featuring a modified classic 1980’s British Trident 24 recording console, an Otari MTR 90 2” analog tape machine, and a vintage Ampex 440c 1/4” 2 track analog tape machine. Along with classic outboard gear such as, the Neve Compressor 33609, Rupert Neve Designs Portico II Master Buss Processor, Neve 1074, Chandler ltd Germanium Compressor, and a host of other gear including an array of microphones, guitars & amplifiers. I love working in the analog domain because it sounds just like the records I grew up with in the 60’s and 70’s, nothing sounds like drums and bass on analog tape! I even recorded final mixes down to 1/4” tape and the mastering was done by David Glasser at Airshow Studios in Boulder, Colorado from those 1/4” tapes. No copy & paste, real performances from the heart!”
