Steve Vai and Favored Nations / Mascot Label Group will release VAI / GASH digitally and on CD January 27, 2023. The vinyl album will follow on February 24.  Today, they present “She Saved My Life Tonight” which can be heard below.  Vai shares, “Recorded in 1991, this track is an uplifting rocker about being way down and out, and then finding something worth living for.”  The first reveal was “In The Wind,”: https://youtu.be/AkbnEj2yDw0.  When initially presented Vai offered, “’In The Wind’ was the first track that was recorded for this record. It captures the spirit of the open road freedom we felt while riding our Harley’s on bike rallies and interstate road trips. The track has the exhilaration of having that kind of power under you while kissing the wind.”  The second recording presented, “Busted,” can be previewed here: https://youtu.be/O2U5pSbFSIg.

As Vai shares, “This record was written and recorded in somewhat of a stream of consciousness in 1991 within perhaps a 2-week period as an answer to my desire to have a particular kind of music to listen to when I was riding my Harley Davison Motorcycle with my friends. It’s reminiscent of a certain type of rock music I enjoyed as a teenager in the 1970’s. These recordings sat on the shelf for over 30 years and are being released now in 2023. Here’s the story…”

An abbreviated synopsis of the anecdotal history and fond remembrances as articulated by Vai in the liner notes offer detail on singer Gash and his deep connection to Vai.  From his teenage years on Long Island, to today, he has openly shared his love of motorcycles. Gash shared that passion.

Vai reflects, “Around 1990, I was overcome with a desire to rip out what I thought would be a straight-ahead type of rock record that contained the kind of music I wish I had to listen to when I was that teenager ensconced in the biker culture. And then I met Johnny “Gash” Sombrotto.”

John was born in Queens, New York and as a youth was an avid motorcycle enthusiast. In 1977 at the age of 21, he endured a serious accident that caused his body to catch fire while plunging 30 feet onto a barbed wire fence. Vai wrote in the liner notes, “The doctors told his family that he had third degree burns over 60% of his body, and that if he even survived, there was a strong possibility that he would lose his right arm and left leg. While in the Burn Unit, he endured excruciating pain, especially when given the intense daily cycle of hot baths for his burns. He soldiered on, and after a month he was finally discharged from the hospital. Luckily, no limbs were amputated. He was, however, left with a partial left ear and layers of skin grafts over his neck, arms, legs, and entire chest. The stories he told about his recovery and the excruciating pain involved were crushingly gut wrenching. But he survived, and eventually thrived again. He made his way out to Los Angeles in 1982 and got right back up on his motorcycle.”

Vai met John through a mutual friend, Mark Cimino. They bonded over biker culture, and he choose the name “Gash” as a nickname. Vai wrote, “…I’ve observed many people interacting with him on our numerous motorcycle road trips and other adventures. At first sight, many people could be taken by his bald head, scarred neck and burnt-off ear. Looking as he did and riding a Harley it was easy to assume he was perhaps a tough, menacing biker with a nefarious attitude, but after engaging with him for even a minute, his charm and magnetic charisma had them laughing in their shoes and completely enjoying his uplifting presence. He endeared people with his wit, warmth, and sparkle. John hit it off instantly with the most unlikely of people of every age, color, size, political or sexual persuasions. He was non superficial and never judged people. This allowed his engaging personality and intoxicating charm to draw you in. Under all those scars was a bold and fearlessly warm heart that can be seen in his disarming and big soft blue eyes.”

He continues, “…something in me wanted to get him in the studio and see how he would belt over these biker type songs I had demoed, but nothing could have prepared me for the voice that came out of his mouth. I had to think, off course he sounds like that because that’s him, confident, authentic, fearless but with a lighthearted intention. This was the voice I wanted to hear wailing over these slamming rock tracks. I was stunned. Around that timeframe I was also starting to launch work on ‘Sex and Religion’ and was hoping to eventually record more than the 8 songs I had laid down with John for an alternative project, but that was proven impossible. On September 7th, 1998, two days after my father had passed away, the phone rang, and it was John’s beloved girlfriend Nancy. Her voice was quaking, and I somehow knew what she was going to tell me. ‘John was in a bike accident and was killed’.”

After three decades, Steve Vai has finally shared this master with The World. In his opinion, “He would have absolutely been the greatest rock lead singer you would ever want to know. All the elements were in place, but he was gone. Disheartened, I put the entire project on the shelf, and would listen to it at least once a year for the past 30 years, especially around the anniversary of his passing. Then recently something compelled me to want to put it out now.  I wish you would have had a chance to get to know John. I believe you would have loved him just as we all did. For now, he is ‘In the Wind’.”

Icelandic post metal band SÓLSTAFIR are proud to release their brand new music video for the track ‘Dionysus’. The song was taken from their latest album ‘Endless Twilight of Codependent Love’ which was released in 2020 via Season of Mist.

The video can now be seen via the official Season of Mist YouTube channel HERE.

‘Dionysus’ was produced and filmed in Reykjavík (IS) between August and October 2021, and edited at the Don’t Panic Films studio in Boston, Massachusetts (USA). While the video was originally shot in 8K, the finished product was scanned in its entirety onto 35mm filmstock for release. At its core, the music video for ‘Dionysus’ is an allegory for the inner-violence and tragedy of substance abuse, and for the struggle with an endless twilight of codependent love, inherent.

SÓLSTAFIR previously announced their trek with KATATONIA, which will head out in January and February 2023 during a co-headline tour of the UK and Europe. A full list of tour dates can be found below.

Firewind and Former Ozzy guitarist Gus G recently spoke to The Metal Voice about his Greece tour with former Iron Maiden singer Paul Di’anno plus he gave an updated on the recording process on the new Firewind studio album.

When asked about the recent shows in Greece with Former Iron Maiden Singer Paul Di’anno
” I play here a lot obviously because it’s my country and we have really loyal following and people to support us and a lot of love.  I played in Greece also with Ozzy  but the Iron Maiden crowd is different thing,  it’s almost like going to the World Cup final or something. I mean everybody’s just like wow, they’re amped up to 11. If you’ve seen that Flight 666 (Iron Maiden DVD) you know  it’s very similar to that South America thing. Everybody came with a love that they were just pouring on for for Paul because obviously with the surgery and stuff. They just came there to see him and and honor him and it was it was touching man. The first gig he (Paul) felt a little bit out of it because he was in the wheelchair and he kept apologizing to the crowd.  But he sounded great he did great and every night was better than the other, it was incredible. It was like a bit like a Beatle Mania in a small kind of level, like fans were waiting for him outside the hotel every night and every morning. They (fans) were waiting there to to get their stuff signed and to take photos with him and he was very very nice with everybody,  it was really cool man. It was nice to experience.”

When asked about any updates on upcoming Firewind studio album
“We actually just recorded the new album, we just did drums I haven’t started with the guitars yet but  the drums are done and we did record one cover, so far. But I think we’re gonna go back in the studio after this tour and do a few more covers so I would be  interested to collect more ideas and suggestions but we did do one song that I think it’s amazing it was a hit.”

When asked when the new Firewind Studio album will be released
“I don’t know yet.  I was talking  to AFM records owner and actually we met over Christmas  and we talked about it and now there’s like a new approach it seems like we’re just gonna be releasing singles. That was  an interesting topic they brought on because they just want to keep on releasing singles and then eventually those singles will be part of an album. We still are worked on the album, I already wrote the songs, I wrote 10 songs. But they (Label) were like you know we’ll just drop singles as we go and see how much traction you get and see if we get  playlist placements because you know Spotify playlists are like the new radio, that’s  the new medium right now. “

When asked if the new album musical direction the new album and will be a continuation as last album or a different directions
“I think it still sounds like Firewind,  my goal was to make the songs a little bit more anthemic type of tracks this time around.  I thought every song should be a single  I didn’t write any kind of like obscure type of tracks or didn’t experiment in that type of area. Something (songs) that you can play in an arena, in a festival in front of a large crowd that that was like my philosophy behind this one this time. Which is good you know it’s not easy to write that type of songs. People think it’s easy, it’s not so easy to make that (type of song) and resonate  with a bigger crowd.”

t’s time to bang your fists in the air as WITHOUT WARNING releases their 4th single “R.P.B.P” (short for: Red Pill, Blue Pill) via Inverse Records. Taking a different intensive and eerie approach, this is single really stands out from the previous releases.

“R.P.B.P” emphasizes a mind game like surrounding where humanity is possessed by an aggressive creator. Are you up to challenge your suppressor to get out alive? Or is this fight to live only happening in your darkest mind?

Even if the lyrics strongly suggest that the theme is a fictional and dangerous game setup, there is a metaphoric hidden message. Reflecting the anger and will to control people through various evil world leaders and using people as puppets for their dirty deeds.

With the new single, Without Warning also presents their new fifth member, or disciple as they say – Aleksi Rintala. He is the talented composer behind “R.P.B.P” and will be adding his talent to the guitars and music production.

Single cover by Michaela Tuomenoksa

“When the band asked me to join as a guitarist, I was also happy to take responsibilities in the songwriting department. I started digging through my archives for a fitting demo for the new band, and I came across this unusual, “nu-metalish” demo that I decided to present to the band. The band was excited about it the minute they heard it, and in a short period of time we produced an amazing new song for Without Warning. I believe the rest of the band is excited as I am of this new release!” says Aleksi Rintala.

The new single is accompanied by a music video which brings the intensive story visually alive, produced by no other than Guilty Visuals. The video also includes an acting feature with Inka Inkinen, the amazing vocalist for Noira.

Light a torch, get out of your mental cavern and allow the light, refracted on the snow, to open your eyes and your thoughts.

The new single “Necessity of exploration” by NOISE IN MYSELF will be the perfect soundtrack.

The beginning of the song is dark and the fast meter presses on terms that increase the sense of claustrophobia, also because alternated with the drums. The instrumental explodes on a vigorous rhythm section, while the gloom vanishes and motivation and energy are coming back. The strings lead us, at first through the struggle and then towards the final part, with powerful and evocative riffs: a deep, hopeful and introspective breath while staring at the sky. The atmosphere becomes ethereal, on the wave of the question that Martina is asking to the universe: “Tell me, space creature, tell me what should I do? To be useful, to do good”.

“Necessity of exploration” is available now on all digital platforms via Wanikiya Record and with the official videoclip:

Noise in Myself is a young prog/alternative metal band based in Switzerland and Italy, born from an Enea Maina‘s idea. Enea is a swiss guitarist and composer born in 2004.

The line up of the band actually includes, besides Enea, Martina Pedrotti (voice and flute, born 2005), Leon Sürder (electric guitar, born 2008), Damiano Palmeri (drums, born 2003) and Federico Morello (bass, born 1994).

The band has published one homonimous album via Wanikiya Record in 2022.
