Fresh off crushing cities across North America during their headline run on this year’s Decibel Magazine Tour, Cryptopsy remain insatiable as ever. The Montreal legends’ latest album, An Insatiable Violence, received their second nomination for Best Metal/Hard Music Album at this year’s JUNO Awards, a category they won two years ago. Now, ahead of their summer European headline tour, they are revealing a freakish surprise that shows once more why they are the most vile band in death metal.

Today, Cryptopsy are announcing that they are performing later this summer at Billy Strings’ annual Ionia Freak Fair. The band will headline The Pyramid Scheme Pinball & Metal Tent on Saturday, August 29. The news arrives almost a year since they collaborated with the Grammy Award-winning bluegrass star on “Blasphemy Made Fresh”.

“We’re incredibly grateful and honored to be part of something as unique as the Ionia Freak Fair”, Cryptopsy says. “Music has always been about breaking boundaries. We can’t wait to bring something heavy to this year’s festival. Who knows, maybe Billy will even stop by for a song…”

More than 30 years into their storied career, Montreal death metal innovators Cryptopsy return with their ninth studio album, An Insatiable Violence, set for release on June 20, 2025 on Season of Mist.

Revered in extreme metal circles for such groundbreaking classics as 1994’s Blasphemy Made Flesh and the 1996 magnum opus None So Vile, Cryptopsy find yet another gear on An Insatiable Violence, which further solidifies the band’s place in the upper echelon of death metal. Coming out of the pandemic, the band dedicated themselves to staying on top of their game more than ever before, with the intention of consistently putting out a new record every two years. That started with 2023’s acclaimed As Gomorrah Burns, and continues 21 months later with An Insatiable Violence.

“We had to write the majority of An Insatiable Violence while on the Death to All tour, which was something we’d never done before”, vocalist Matt McGachy says. “Flo [Mounier, drums] and Chris [Donaldson, guitar] really put their hats on. It was a feat”.

“Ever since COVID our focus is clearer, a lot of work gets done faster, and we push each other to get it done.”, Mounier says.

In addition to featuring some of the fastest passages Cryptopsy has ever recorded – keen listeners will even hear the odd gravity blast from Mounier, a rarity from the virtuoso drummer – the controlled chaos of their signature sound is offset by well-timed passages that ease off the gas pedal enough to allow listeners to come up for some air. That dynamic rage on An Insatiable Violence in turn makes the more aggressive moments hit even harder, which is immediately noticeable on the harrowing “Until There’s Nothing Left” and the chugging closing track “Malicious Needs”. Olivier Pinard anchors “Fools Last Acclaim” with stunning authority (keeping pace with Mounier is an unenviable task) while Donaldson offsets gnarly, atonal riffs with melodic passages throughout the record. “It’s a continuation of As Gomorrah Burns,” McGachy says, “We really wanted to make a groovy record, and we think we’ve done it.”

It seems as though nothing is scarier than real life right now, and An Insatiable Violenceis a commentary on today’s society as though filtered through the transgressive, countercultural perspectives of J.G. Ballard and David Cronenberg.

“It all came to me in a dream in August 2023,” elaborates McGachy. “I woke up, I took my phone, and I wrote down the title of the record. It’s about a person that wakes up every day and fixes a machine. Tinkers with it, tries to make it better all day long, sweating in the sun, and then at night, they strap themself into this machine and the machine tortures them, and they love it. Then they wake up the next day and fix it again to make it more efficient, to keep harnessing it, and then just keep doing it over and over again.

While fantastically twisted, An Insatiable Violence mirrors our toxic relationship with social media.  “We’re continuously trying to feed this algorithm of the machine while it’s totally tearing us apart socially and psychologically”, McGachy continues. “’The Nimis Adoration’ is about mukbang, these Korean people that eat too much food on the Internet. Piles and piles of food. A poor girl died on a live cam”.

At the center of the album is the mind-boggling percussion skill of Mounier, arguably the most imposing Canadian drummer not named Peart, who dominates such standout tracks as “Dead Eyes Replete”, “Fools Last Acclaim”, and “Embrace the Nihility”. “I look at Flo as an Olympic athlete,” says McGachy. “I want to push this guy to go a lot faster than Cryptopsy’s previous releases. We have so much more to give, and I wanted just drain it all out of him while he’s still at the top of his game, because he is. He’s crushing.”

“I mix up a lot of a physical activity, like resistance training into the drumming,” Mounier says. “I recently developed new techniques that make it easier to go even faster, so I tried to push that on this album. My focus is now more on dynamics and the touch of the snare, a certain snap of the snare, a rim shot on the snare, the toms, a light touch or a hard touch. Live, I can really let go, you know, give the sound guy a hard time,” he adds with a laugh.

For McGachy, who has always boasted a powerful, guttural death growl, the rigors of touring have enabled him to evolve as a vocalist, and he turns in a revelatory performance on An Insatiable Violence. In addition to ear-scraping screams that rival George “Corpsegrinder” Fisher, McGachy unleashes the deepest, filthiest death growls of his career. “Gomorrah was the first album that I recorded with my full false chord scream, which is something that I’d only just touched on The Book of Suffering: Tome II in little sections,” he says. “We did at least 140 shows since Gomorrah. I exclusively did my false chords during all the songs that we performed on None So Vile and Blasphemy Made Flesh. And then, when we did go into the studio for An Insatiable Violence, Chris would be like, ‘Deeper, you must go deeper!’”

Another fearsome vocalist from Cryptopsy’s lore pops back into the booth on An Insatiable Violence. “When we were recording the vocals for ‘Embrace the Nihility’, Chris had the idea of ending the song with the same vocal pattern as the end of ‘…and Then It Passes’”, McGachy remembers. “We figured if we were going to rip ourselves off, then we may as well get the real thing. We were honored that Mike DiSalvo accepted. We are all huge fans of Cryptopsy’s DiSalvo era. His vocals on this album are an ultra Easter egg for our fans”.

In addition to the effusive praise As Gomorrah Burns received from within the metal scene, the 2023 album achieved a first for Cryptopsy: earning them their first ever JUNO Award in 2024 for Metal/Hard Music Album of the Year. “We had little-to-no expectations of winning” says McGachy. ”We didn’t even go to the ceremonies because we were on tour in Europe with Atheist. On the day we found out that we won, we had a crazy 18-hour drive from Derby to Germany, plus a ferry ride. But we still partied for 48 hours. Flo bought an expensive bottle of champagne”.

Cryptopsy recognize that not every death metal band sticks around long enough to win a Canadian Grammy 30 years into their career. The cover art for An Insatiable Violence was created by the late, great vocalist Martin Lacroix.  “The album artwork has got to be one of the most important things to us!”, the band says. “Martin Lacroix was one of our vocalists, one of our great friends and one of the nicest people that anyone could have the privilege to meet. We really wish he was here with us to share this moment. His perfect smile would say it all! Rest in peace brother”.

With Cryptopsy’s latest career renaissance showing no signs of slowing down, the recent accolades are only the beginning. An Insatiable Violence reaches a new peak in a career loaded with them.

ESCAPE THE HIVE (Ft. Michael Thomas Beck) Return with Brand New Album “Fight Or Flight”, Out Now

Escape The Hive is an original 70s style hard rock band. No tracks. No samples. Old school style riffs and harmonies. With a sound and fury reminiscent of the arena rock bands of that era. Featuring one time Jake E. Lee vocalist for Red Dragon Cartel, Michael Thomas Beck and Grammy Nominated and guitarist Conrad Varela, drummer Rich Hinshaw & former DL Marble bassist Paul Williams.

They released their debut “This Is Gonna Sting” in 2023 to critical acclaim. Then hit the road playing with acts like Angel, Burning Witches, Faster Pussycat, Gene Loves Gezabel and many more. Relentlessly touring the US to promote it. One crowd at a time. They amassed 130k views for their single/video, ”I Can See It”. They are now looking forward to the release of their new record Fight or Flight. As Beck states, “This new record is the next evolution for Escape The Hive. A bit heavier, a little bluesier and we can’t wait for everyone to hear the new songs. We are SO exited to have our new release out on Deko Entertainment. Thank you to all the members of The Hive who have waited patiently. Hoping you dig it!”. Hinshaw continues, “Hope the passion that went into this new record comes across! It’s been a great ride so far. Here’s to waking up! And not spilling the wine.”

Listen here: https://push.fm/ps/bg1fswaw

Fight or Flight has ten blistering new tracks including “Stings Like The Truth” and the first single “Around The Sun”, as Williams states about the new album, “This record means a lot to all of us in various ways. It’s decades in the making if you will. A true collaboration of many styles with the common goal of producing great music, with moving melodies and driving grooves designed to engage the listener and make ‘em ask for more.” Varela continues, “This record is the culmination of 4 lifelong musicians, thousands of miles on the road, and every fan that has supported us along the way coming to fruition. It’s angrier, shreddier, and louder than our freshman release, and marks the beginning of a new era for Escape The Hive. We hope you love it just as much (if not more) than we do!”

Escape The Hive thrives on stage with an electrifying live performance and will be hitting the road across the US in support of their new release Fight or Flight.

Live Report: DRUMZILLA & DRUM GALÀ 2026 – Rovigo, Italy (19th – 21st June 2026)

Posted by tarjavirmakari on June 29, 2026

Live Report and photos by Christian Tallone & Fabrizia Cameretti

Rovigo, 19/20/21 June 2026. As if this late-June week wasn’t already sweltering enough, the Drumzilla organisation set the city alight with an incredible and one-of-a-kind event — a festival for drummers, created by drummers, to celebrate a magnificent instrument that is all too often treated as secondary, overshadowed by charismatic guitarists and frontmen, yet is in fact the beating heart and engine of every band.

Unfortunately, due to work commitments, I was only able to attend Saturday the 20th. The day began as early as 10am in a room at the Hotel Palace, where a clinic was held by Alex Cohen — a New York-based musician and composer widely recognised as a virtuoso of modern technical drumming, celebrated for his coordination techniques, speed, and extreme polyrhythms. He was joined by two other giants of the drum world: Nic Collins (son of Genesis legend Phil Collins and founder of Better Strangers) and Finnish drummer Kai Hahto of Nightwish — world-class artists who generously shared their experience with students of every age and level.

It’s not every day you get to play, talk, ask questions, and then share pizza and crisps over a spritz with genuine legends — among them Christoph Schneider of Rammstein, the headline guest of the evening’s drum galà, who dropped into the clinic to share a convivial moment with everyone present, taking photos, signing records and drumheads in an atmosphere that had by then become wonderfully relaxed and familiar.

Metalshock Finland’s staff with Christoph Schneider

The Evening: Drum Galà

The drum galà itself was a completely free event held in the beautiful Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II in the centre of Rovigo, packed to the very last inch — Rammstein fans above all, but also clinic participants, children, elderly people, families, music lovers, and those who perhaps simply happened to be passing and thought: “Why not… let’s go watch these two playing drums — it’s free.”

Mission accomplished, because that’s exactly what Drumzilla is all about: beyond its primary goal of giving musicians, both professionals and amateurs, the opportunity to exchange ideas and study together, it’s also about making it accessible to everyone… because there’s nothing more powerful and exciting than a drum kit that makes you tremble.

Dario Capacci

At around 9pm, Riccardo Merlini — the creator and organiser of this event, a local son and himself a drummer of international renown, considered among the fastest in the world, a student of Mike Mangini and Thomas Lang, with collaborations including Paul Gilbert and Michele Luppi — took to the stage. He was joined in hosting duties by Dario Capacci, known as Il Batterista Metal, a well-known musician and content creator from Romagna (his channel #FACILISSIMO is one I’ve personally followed since its launch).

Dario had the honour of opening proceedings with a set of around 30 minutes — intense and powerful. Two tracks from the repertoires of Margin Code and Trick or Treat, the bands of which he is a member, followed by two covers: a tribute to Avenged Sevenfold with the magnificent “Nightmare” from the 2010 album of the same name — a track born from the legendary Mike Portnoy following the premature passing of co-founder The Rev — before flooring the accelerator with a devastating rendition of Meshuggah’s “Bleed”, arguably one of the worst nightmares for anyone approaching the double bass pedal. As he himself remarked during the evening: “I was the first to play Bleed in this square — who knows, maybe the second will be Tomas Haake himself. We can all hope, so Riccardo — make it happen!”

MΞTHØD NØIR

At 10:30pm it was Riccardo Merlini’s turn — and he dedicated his slot not to a solo performance, but to the live debut of his new band, MΞTHØD NØIR: a brand-new and highly promising project with rock, metal and progressive influences. A rhythm section with an irresistible groove — Riccardo on drums, Otus Rex on bass, and Max Nonato on guitar — launched into “Late Check-Out Love”, followed by “Under Your Pillow”, a track I’d already heard on their channel. Then came “Under These Open Skies”, with vocalist Vic Mc alternating between clean and screaming vocals with impressive versatility, enriching the band’s sound with shades ranging from melodic rock to full-on metal assault. Time was unfortunately brief — two more tracks, “Stardust Dream” and “Break the Pattern”, closed the set.

What to say about MΞTHØD NØIR? A band of the highest calibre — with a musician of Riccardo’s stature, the rest simply had to match it. We will certainly be hearing more from them, and I hope to see them live again soon with a longer set. After a debut of this prestige, only great things can follow.

Baard Kolstad

At around 10:30pm, it was the turn of Baard Kolstad — born 1992 — and calling him a phenomenon feels like an understatement. Norwegian, and despite his relative youth, he carries a formidable career: from street performance to a television debut in 2009 on the Norwegian version of Got Talent, through the Roland V-Drums World Championship title, membership of black metal band Borknagar, and ultimately landing with Leprous, the progressive band founded in 2001. Baard gave the Rovigo audience an absolutely extraordinary performance of around one hour: odd time signatures, polyrhythms, blistering speed without ever losing intensity or dynamics — then slowing to breakdowns so doom-laden they seemed to make the metronome stutter. Particularly striking was his use of two or three snare drums simultaneously.

Kolstad is the kind of drummer who either drives you to give everything you have, or makes you put the sticks down for good. Whatever his effect on each of us, witnessing him in a setting like this was an enormous privilege. Next objective: don’t miss the next Leprous live show.

Christoph Schneider

Riccardo Merlini returned to the stage, visibly moved: “This is it — the moment has arrived.” Despite the already extraordinary standard of the evening, in the end, we were all there for one reason. A man who needs no introduction: Christoph Schneider, legendary drummer of Rammstein — the greatest industrial metal band on the planet.

Christoph took the stage, offered the crowd a brief salute — “I am not a man of many words… let’s party!” — then sat behind his unmistakable kit and sent the square into delirium with “Tattoo” from their 2019 self-titled seventh studio album “Rammstein”, followed by the brooding “B****” from the masterpiece Liebe ist für alle da. I don’t believe those square walls had ever seen so many people — those who had secured front-row seats were quite literally buried under fans who had climbed every available raised surface.

“Weißes Fleisch” and “Sehnsucht” took us back to the past — a snare like a gunshot. Then the throttle opened with the fantastic “Waidmanns Heil” and its incredible chorus, followed by “Angst”, “Keine Lust” (prime headbanging material), and “Morgenstern” — one of my personal favourites, with that march in the verse, the epic chorus, and the explosive finale. Magnificent. Then “Sex”, “Heirate Mich”, the danceable groove of “Radio” getting everyone moving, before closing with the Spanish-flavoured “Te Quiero Puta” — needless to say, the entire crowd was singing along, and if any passing pensioner didn’t know it beforehand, they certainly left with a new favourite — and with Rammstein a new fan.

Twelve tracks, one hour of absolute joy and an unforgettable show. The performance was impeccable; the sound, perfect. Christoph proved himself a consummate professional as well as a towering artist — and a man of genuine humility, giving photos, hugs, and handshakes to everyone who managed to find him afterwards. That is not something every legend does. From the heart of a long-time fan like me: thank you, Christoph.

Closing Notes

A final group photo on stage with all the artists of the day and the vast Rovigo crowd at their backs. A plaque was presented to Christoph — “This is my first drum award!” — along with an enormous package of Italian pasta. Not bad at all.

A heartfelt thank you goes to Riccardo Merlini for having created something this extraordinary; to Dario Capacci for teaching at the clinic, performing live, and hosting throughout the entire evening; to all the artists of this day and those of the previous days I was unfortunately unable to attend; to the city of Rovigo; to all the sponsors; and last but by no means least, to the technicians and sound engineers who did a fantastic job — working all day mounting and testing equipment under what I can only describe, having been there, as one of the hottest suns in the last 2,000 years.

I leave you with an important message shared by Riccardo and Dario — may it reach even those who weren’t there to hear it in person:

“If you want to become a professional, always believe in yourself. Study. Don’t give up. Invest more in your education than in your equipment. With commitment and dedication, nothing is impossible.”

Thank you all. Greetings from Drumzilla — until next time.

A few days before the start of Drumzilla (June 19-21), organized by Riccardo Merlini, Metalshock Finland had the great pleasure of interviewing him, in case you missed it, read it HERE.
