Drum tracking for Exul, the fourth long-player from Australian extreme progressive metallers NE OBLIVISCARIS, started in March 2020. There is an ominous tone to that date: March 2020. The pandemic demarcation line. That month, Daniel Presland laid down his drums in Nashville, Tennessee, with American producer Mark Lewis. As flight cancellations increased and borders shuttered, Presland made it home literally hours before Australia closed theirs. Lewis, guitarist Benjamin Baret and bassist Martino Garattoni weren’t as lucky. They were due to land in Australia in the days that followed to continue tracking, but were forced to remain overeseas indefinitely. With recording studios shuttered throughout Melbourne, a slow, tedious, life-altering two-year grind to complete Exul ensued for NE OBLIVISCARIS.

What should have been the continued upward swing after 2017’s critically acclaimed Urn turned into the most fraught moment of NE OBLIVISCARIS’s career. Clean vocalist and violinist Tim Charles says the period “came close to breaking us completely.” It was a time filled with death, relationships breaking down, despair and financial loss. Presland, NE OBLIVISCARIS’s drummer since 2005, amicably parted ways in early 2022, throwing yet another wrench into the band’s plans.

There are, however, happy accidents scattered throughout the creation of Exul. The extra, unexpected downtime allowed the band to fine-tune and even re-write parts previously set in stone before the pandemic. Charles’s violin solo at the end of “Graal” is a prime example: His original idea wasn’t fully realized until he revisited the song in early 2021 and promptly came up with a new part. It was a classic “a-ha” moment that improved the song.

“Getting an opportunity to have a song mostly done for a year or so and then go back to it, find what you loved about it the first time and maybe even improve it in some ways was a nice silver lining from all the delays,” says Charles. “I think because we had so many delays that were out of our control, we were even more determined to take our time to make sure when the time came to record and to mix, that we ensured it was the absolute best it could be in every way.”

Seven additional studios and three more countries later, Exul was finally mixed and mastered in July 2022.

The album personifies NE OBLIVISCARIS’s distinctive, boundary-pushing ethos. The band’s trademark blend of emotion and beauty is as towering as ever, if not even more compelling, particularly how Charles’s violin lines carefully weave their way around Baret and fellow guitarist Matt Klavins’ riffing. The duality of Charles’s clean vocals and Xenoyr’s growls remains the narrative anchor, elevating songs that emanate sophistication and are a masterclass in composition.

“Our approach is always the same,” says Charles, “which is essentially to just write and see what comes out. Exul definitely had its challenges during the songwriting process. Part of the beauty of how our music comes together is that we are quite different individuals bringing an array of ideas together. From there, we work out how to combine them into something that is seamless and beautiful to us. We were determined to make this our best and most complete album yet, which definitely resulted in it taking longer. But we are so proud of this album and it’s exciting to finally share it with the world.”

The album’s centerpiece is the two-part “Misericorde I – As the Flesh Fails” and “Misericorde – Anatomy of Quiescence.” (A NE OBLIVISCARIS album is not complete without a multi-part epic!) According to Charles, Part II began by taking a song they thought was finished (Pt I) and asking, “What if after that…?” The band then wrote a section that took the piece in a new direction and what was a 7 minute song, became an almost 17 minute 2 part epic.

“The bulk of Part I was written more so by Benji and Martino,” notes Charles. “You can hear the very guitar-driven approach present throughout that track. Part II, by contrast, was written more so by myself in collaboration with others and the emphasis changes more towards expansive solos and slow-developing sections that build towards the epic finale. These two tracks are a great example of how it’s the combination of our different strengths as songwriters spread across an album that results in the sound that is ‘NE OBLIVISCARIS‘.”

Charles’s violin parts, whether on “Misericorde II,” “Equus” or “Suspyre,” exude confidence. The instrument has always been central to the band’s sound. On Exul, Charles’s violin playing is taken to another level. “I think that over the years, in regards to how my violin interacts within NeO’s music, I’ve simply continued to add more strings to my bow, so to speak,” he says. “With ‘Exul,’ I definitely explored even further the use of layers of violin and viola parts to create a more textured feel compared to other albums. ‘Mesericorde II’ was definitely a bit of a breakthrough song for me, where I felt I could utilize the strings in a way that hadn’t been done in NeO’s music before. In the end, whatever serves the song best is always the aim and having more ways of creating music makes it easier to serve the song.”

The Exul album title came to Xen when he was summing up the album’s feeling musically and lyrically. Coincidentally, it matched the experience of most people during the pandemic and the Russian invasion of Ukraine. “I think everyone at some point has felt at odds with the world around them, felt alone, cast out, or misunderstood,” says Xen. “Exul felt right to use in a broader sense and as a lone word, for we each have our own history and a story of exile.

“Overall, there’s a darker core to this album, perhaps more ominous than previous releases,” he continues. “However abstract the lyrics are, they involve some form of unwanted departure — all journeys into torment, passion, longing and even despair. They touch on the process of physical and psychological destruction that comes from that sense or reality of being exiled, whether forced from one’s land, ostracised from a community, shunned by a religion, or even simply being treated differently for being who they are.”

Touring will factor heavily into NE OBLIVISCARIS’s 2023 plans. The band will embark on headlining tours worldwide that will hit new territories. As luck would have it, the return to live show activity will coincide with the release of Exul and the band’s 20th anniversary. As one of Australia’s leading extreme metal exports, there is a distinct sense of gratitude from Charles and his bandmates. They’re looking forward to sharing it with fans when they resume touring.

“Simply getting the opportunity to perform music that we’ve written on stages around the world to people that genuinely love and connect with it,” finishes Charles when talking about NE OBLIVISCARIS’s 20-year journey. “There is something incredibly special about the energy that exists between an artist and audience at a concert and it’s an honor to get the opportunity to spend 2023 connecting with people in that way once more.”

WAKE are releasing their single “Vast of Infinite“, which has been remixed by Justin Broadrick of Jesu, exclusively through Bandcamp today! The track was originally recorded in 2020 and was remixed in 2022.

“We’re thrilled to work with Justin Broadrick on this remix. He’s been a staple in a lot of our musical influences over the years and it’s amazing to hear his unique take on one of our songs” states WAKE vocalist Kyle Ball. Guitarist Rob LaChance adds, “Vast and Infinite came from a dark place somewhere between Covid isolation, change and a great feeling of reflection. Justin’s remix sounds as a continuation of all three but through a darker register.“

Fans will be able to stream and purchase the track available through Bandcamp here: wakegrind.bandcamp.com

The band will be performing at the SOLD OUT Decibel Magazine Beer & Metal Festival in Denver, CO on Saturday December 3, which will also feature the band’s craft beer collaboration with Wake Brewing.

Wake Brewing and WAKE the band have very similar values and beer tastes, so doing a second co-brew for the fest was a total no-brainer.

About Wake Brewing/WAKE‘s beer collaboration “Infinite Inward” – “This 7% West Coast IPA was dusted up with CTZ, Citra, Centennial, and Summit hops. Balanced, but also hop forward. Juicy, but also with crisp hop bitterness. A focused profile, but with dense spiciness, too.“

After the Decibel Denver Beer & Metal Fest, WAKE will join Wayfarer for a short tour that wraps up on December 11 in Chicago, IL at Peace Simulation Fest.

Wayfarer / WAKE “A Romance In Descent”

“Thought Form Descent” released in June 2022 on Metal Blade Records available on CD, vinyl, and digitally here: metalblade.com/wake

Never a band interested in repeating themselves, WAKE has evolved with every release. 2020’s Devouring Ruin made this clearer than ever, hammering the point home with the Confluence EP in the same year, and now they return with Thought Form Descent – their most dynamic, diverse and emotional release to date. “I’d describe the record as a place to reconsider what ‘extreme’ means. The words ‘brutal’, ‘crushing’, ‘devastating’ are overused adjectives for extreme music. We wanted to force people to confront the idea that ‘brutal’ or ‘extreme’ ideas aren’t just blastbeats or angular tritones, or, more importantly, ‘brutal’ elements alongside pointedly passive elements can create their own experience that can channel both and neither.” The result is eight nuanced tracks that run the gamut from relentlessly heavy to exquisitely beautiful – often simultaneously – and instantly grab hold of the listener, demanding their full attention. However, at the same time, they are lushly textured and densely layered, and offer more with every subsequent exposure, unfurling to show hidden depths, and taking WAKE to a whole new level.

To track the album, the band once again collaborated with Dave Otero (Allegaeon, Cattle Decapitation) at Flatline Audio in Denver, CO. “Dave is someone who does something we love – supersedes what people think of him. Sure, he recorded many successful death metal albums, but his ability to understand pop music and its composition, his knowledge of music theory and his willingness to get right into the movement of a song and its chord progressions, not just the riffs, are things that go way beyond ‘death metal’. He can make hard right turns into wildly different sonic territory without batting an eyelash, and he always has an idea during the deviation, too. He contributed a lot to this record.” Having prepared exhaustively in advance, once in the studio the band were able to try new things, play with ideas and rearrange songs, having the time to go down the proverbial rabbit hole and see where it took them. Kevin Hufnagel of Gorguts and Vaura also makes an appearance, playing guitar on “Pareidolia” and “Observer To Master”, the latter track one of the most melodic on the record.

Thought Form Descent track-listing:
01. Infinite Inward
02. Swallow the Light
03. Mourning Dirge (Repose of the Dead)
04. Pareidolia (feat. Kevin Hufnagel of Gorguts and Vaura)
05. Venerate (The Undoing of All)

Today, December 2nd, NUUTTI HANNULA RADIANSSI have unleashed their new single ‘Kahden Maailman Rajalla’ to major digital platforms. The song is a combination of progressive metal with Finnish lyrics.

Nuutti Hannula shared on the single lyrics:
“The lyrics of ‘Kahden maailman rajalla’ are based on Ukraine war and the feelings what I had when I first time heard about the Russian attack. The base idea of the lyrics are unconscious thoughts and how those kind of mental pattern can take a form in material world.
The composition of the song is influlenced by progressive rock, metal core and instrumental bands like Intervals.
The song was instrumental at first, but then I decided to add vocals to it.”

UK-based black metal trio, DAWN RAY’D have today announced the first details of their upcoming third full length studio album – alongside accompanying live dates in the UK.

To Know The Light sees DAWN RAY’D return as a reinvigorated version of themselves as they present a reimagining of exactly what black metal is and can be in the future. The ten track album will be released on March 24, 2023 – with the first single released in early January. The band has posted a teaser online today, pre-orders will launch in the new year. To Know The Light charts the band’s journey through anarcho-nihilism; from anger, to despair, to a radical acceptance of darkness, settling on a new understanding of liberation and joy. More information about the album will be available in due course.

Speaking on the album announcement, Simon Barr (vocals, violin, synths) comments: “This record has been transformative for us, it is Dawn Ray’d, black metal and protest music entirely reimagined. Writing these songs has helped us process the times we are living through, the chaos that swirls around us, and has given us new resolve and a clearer perspective on how we continue to find love and joy in disordered times. We cannot wait to share that catharsis with the world, we will be a poison if we cannot be a cure!”

January 14 – Temple of Boom – Leeds
February 2 – Record Junkee – Sheffield

Australian ESTRANGEMENT Premiere ‘Clusters’ Video

Posted by tarjavirmakari on December 2, 2022
Posted in: Int. News, News. Tagged: ESTRANGEMENT. Leave a comment

Last week, Australian funeral doom metal meets classical music act ESTRANGEMENT released their debut  album,  “Disfigurementality”, via Aesthetic Death.

Today ESTRANGEMENT are premiering the unsettling video of the album track “Clusters”. Watch it HERE.

“’Clusters’ is a contemporary classical music arrangement for strings, flute and screaming human voice. Featuring occasional elements of funeral doom and black metal music, ‘Clusters’ howls with petrifying dread and makes for a confronting sensory experience. The sequence of images was inspired by a common children’s nightmare: running to the point of collapse from a constantly approaching unknown, invisible and invincible force. There will be blood…”.

Aesthetic Death label manager Stu Gregg states:

“JS is not only a man of infinite wisdom and creativity – but a man of his word. Following the split (with Begrabnis, Weird Truth, 2016) he said he had an album brewing inside, with some great ideas. Following the excellent work on display in ESTRANGEMENT’s demo (2014) and split, it was certainly something that grabbed my interest.

We agreed to work on this together, spat on our palms and shook hands – an oath not to be broken. Years later that agreement comes to fruition.

‘Disfigurementality’
has been a highly anticipated release within the extreme doom scene – with many fans of the genre recognising the potential of this unique band.

The album brings together and melds various styles, with authentic traces of classical music, black metal, jazz fusion and even flamenco – however, at its core, ‘Disfigurementality’ remains a piece of extreme doom excellence.

ESTRANGEMENT have managed to solidify and expand upon the creativity of previous works, both through composition but also musically through the use of of flute, violin and double bass through the album. The string arrangements range from the soaring and sublime, to the excruciatingly harsh.

Another notable feature of the album is the wide range of vocals – from the extreme doom growls that JS has as a trademark – yet notably the use of howling violent screams, to throat singing, to liturgical chant, all forging different emotions throughout the album.

‘Disfigurementality’
has the melancholic beauty of My Dying Bride, it has the obscure darkness of Unholy – but it has much more to explore. It is an album of beauty, beguilement and darkness. It will lead you on a journey filled with abrupt changes, seductive tangents and crushing heaviness. It demands the attention that should be given to any great album – go with its unique flow and be richly rewarded.

Not only have ESTRANGEMENT created a fantastic full length debut album – they have created an album that will establish them as leaders in the extreme doom genre, and beyond”.

Tracklist:

02. Detritivore
03. Belong Beneath
04. The Light Unshown

Welcome to LOTAN’s new chapter!

“Ignis” is the first digital single and video of what’s to be the Danish LOTAN‘s debut full-length album and is a midtempo black’n’roll sledgehammer. The song is a comment on the world of chaos that is rising slowly from the rubble of the war in Ukraine, the ecological disasters, and the generation of men and women who has stood idle by. Seekers of eternal youth, Starving soul, For the devil’s truth. The promise that everything will burn in the end.

Today, LOTAN team up with Metal Shock Finland to premiere ‘Ignis’ for Finnish territory, enjoy it here:
