Steve Di Giorgio, Dirk Verbeuren and Michael Dorrian reminisce about the recording of ANATOMY OF I‘s ‘Substratum’ and talk about the 10th anniversary release ‘Substratum Unearthed’, available on all streaming platforms in this 20 minute video call. This special release contains drum & bass tracks of all the songs and the pre-production demos.

ANATOMY OF I is a progressive death metal band from the Netherlands. Mixing a wide array of influences into a mold of tech-thrash/death metal, ANATOMY OF I plays a progressive kind of music without losing focus and staying within straightforward songwriting.

The brainchild of vocalist/guitarist Michael Dorrian, the line-up is completed by Edwin van den Eeden (ex-SINISTER) on drums, Erwin Harreman (SUPREME PAIN) on rhythm guitar and Roderick Ras (HOUWITSER) on bass.

Since the release of its debut album “Substratum” in September 2011, the band has performed live throughout the Netherlands and abroad with the likes of CANNIBAL CORPSE, MASTER (US/CZ), DEW SCENTED (D, NL) and SADISTIK FOREST(SF), among others.

While looking forward to hitting the stage in 2022, the band is currently working on recording their sophomore release.

The debut album was recorded with Steve DiGiorgio (TESTAMENT, DEATH) on fretless bass and Dirk Verbeuren (MEGADETH, SCARVE) on drums.

TUOMAS ROUNAKARI: Sustainability Award Verso for “Arctic Utopias” Documentary Film at Tampere Film Festival

“Arctic Utopias” Documentary Film – feat. Violinist, composer, ethnomusicologist TUOMAS ROUNAKARI as a composer – has earned the Sustainability Award Verso at Tampere Film Festival 2022!

Tuomas comments:
“Arctic Utopias is an unusual documentary film done without a main director. It seeks to answer how different people view the future of the arctic – is it a dystopia or an utopia.

Three directors sent their materials to Helsinki were it was edited together. The film knits together stories with a Greek immigrant living in Tromsø Norway, a Finnish snow-boarder and an indigenous director from Yakutsk Siberia pondering her identity in the hybrid of ethnogenes.”

Here is the statements from the Jury:
“ARCTIC UTOPIAS | Production team Finland, 2022 | Documentary
The winner of Sustainability Award Verso goes to a film for which environmental sustainability was already the new norm. To name a few actions, when making the film the crew had value-based discussions, mentors on different topics were welcomed to help, and the film makers were proactive to share information on sustainability to funders. One key part was the decision to do some things in a smaller manner, as it also meant natural resources were saved.
The greatest positive environmental impact is achieved in the areas that typically cause the most emissions: according to international examples, logistics accounts for about half of the emissions of a production. In the light of this alone, the jury landed on a movie filmed in three countries without flying a single flight. By open call the film utilized actively local professionals. The jury noted that the production structure was something that could be replicated elsewhere.”

From the producers:
“Arctic Utopias is an experimental documentary film project and our humble attempt to find out where the future of the Arctic is headed. Is it Utopic or Dystopic? Who tells the stories of the Arctic and why?
We aim to dive deeper into the different voices, perspectives, experiences, and developments regarding this often mystified and distant feeling region that has become extremely relevant in the context of global warming and biodiversity loss.”

Just recently, violinist, composer, ethnomusicologist TUOMAS ROUNAKARI was forced to postpone the release of “Bear Awakener” album, due to the ongoing pandemic and its effects. But to shorten the wait, he revealed the first album teaser, some feelings from his studio days with Verde in January 2022.

Tuomas stated:
“Disappointed to announce that our release of the Bear Awakener album will be postponed. Not sure exactly for how many weeks, but hopefully it will be shipped everywhere during April. The reason is the obvious one – Covid-19 and its many effects from long queues in printing to unpredictable shipping times. It has hit our team members directly too, but all are well and in good shape by now.
The digital version including the digital booklet is already final. Releasing that before the physical copies simply feels wrong given the nature of this album. I hope to make up this delay with a few more videos around the topic during March.
And for starters! Verde did this little teaser from our studio session for you! We were too busy to actually film anything properly, but this does transfer some of our feelings.
Hear the sound of the violin with raw-gut-strings on two different songs!”

Enjoy the album teaser at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RC1vrvbg9uE

“This is music that gods are listening to” said Pekko Käppi after having listened through the freshly finished mastered tracks.

“Bear Awakener” was recorded, mixed and mastered at the Verde Studio with the gear-wizard Mika Rintala. None of his modular synthesizers were used. All of the equipment used in recording was built by Mika – microphones, pre-amps, EQ and even the mixing console and electrostatic monitors. Bear Awakener has 11 tracks and 43min in total.

New release date will be announced soon.

TUOMAS ROUNAKARI is an internationally acclaimed violinist, composer and ethnomusicologist from Finland. He is a one-man-band blending violin, vocals and stomping with ankle-bells. In his performance he enters various trance-states. In this album he will also be playing a traditional Khanty instrument called Ning-juh.

Tuomas is inspired by different forms of dialogue; man and nature, the seen and the unseen world, ancient and future. His first solo album Shamanviolin was a result of ethnomusicological studies of the earliest 20th century wax-cylinder recordings from Siberia. These studies have also led to many collaborations with indigenous artists. He is one of the few artists who have actually returned their art to native communities for evaluation and development.

Enjoy online concert from Kaustinen Folk Music Festival 2020. Shamanviolin at Pauanne is a full-length online concert produced by the Kaustinen Folk Music Festival 2020. The concert was filmed at the magical Pauanne where a community of folk musicians and folk healers used to live in the 1980’s. All buildings are fully hand made with many mythological decorations. This Shamanviolin concert ends with lament melodies in a burnt down sauna. The magic and unique beauty of this place is still strong. A perfect environment for my music.

JOETOWN (Ft. Matt Starr) Release New 9 Min. Prog Rock Epic Single ‘Nero’, Includes Tribute & Nod to Late Composer Ennio Morricone

Following up on the success of the recent single “Freightrain”, long time legacy rocker, vocie of Bomber Alley and producer JOETOWN releases the single “Nero” world wide on Mindsnap Music / Von Artists, Ltd. This track digs deeper into the artist’s complexity and range. Joe explains; “I have always been difficult to put squarely into any one genre, this proves that again, its heavy rock, its metal, its progressive, it has a f’n whistle track, wtf… I was really excited to get deeper into more expansive arrangement, orchestration and guitar playing on ‘Nero’, all the guitars and bass are me, with Matt Starr (Ace Frehley, Mr. Big) tackling the drums.”

He continues, “Lyrically, ‘Nero’ is a critical summary of the influence that people in power possess in the 21st Century due to the advent of social media platforms supplanting actual delivery of facts. We live in a scary time as propaganda moves at the speed of light enabling leaders to manipulate the public in unprecedented ways.”

Stream or get it here: https://orcd.co/joetown-nero

Regarding the Ennio Morricone tribute element, Joe is quick to give praise; “I’ve always loved the Ennio Morricone scores to the early Clint Eastwood and other westerns from that era, the material is so amazing! I let that influence and shape the entire end section of the song as a tribute to such a great composer… his music and style will forever endure.”

Joetown is proud to be performing live and on a float at the 2022 New Haven St. Patrick’s Day Parade March 13th and will be recording the entire event. He will also be headlining Crystal Bee’s in Southington CT on March 19th.

Joetown has been an active part of the New Haven scene since 1995 and is enjoying recent success from the late 2021 single “Freightrain” released by East Haven based Mindsnap Music. Christian “Opus” Lawrence of Dead By Wednesday, who owns Mindsnap Music is excited about the growing excitement around the band and its upcoming new single/video release “Nero” from the label on March 11th. “It’s going to be a major big week for the band and the label, so many great things are happening so fast, this band is on fire!” says Opus (Mindsnap Music / Dead By Wednesday drummer).

STRAY GODS Release New Official Video for Second Single ‘Black Horses’

STRAY GODS release their new official video for their second single “Black Horses”! The track is taken from the band’s upcoming album “Storm The Walls” that will be released on March 18, 2022 via ROAR! Rock of Angels Records!

Stray Gods comment on the video: “In this video, we faced a big challenge: while the song is talking about a forthcoming encounter of two armies interrupted by the sudden galloping of some riders on a kind of “evil” Black Horses, we wanted to do something different from the typical “epic” videoclips. So, we decided to go for a REAL battle of “Crossbows & Catapults”! This game was a huge success in the early 80s, particularly in our country, Greece, where it still has its enthusiasts and collectors spending insane amounts of money for a boxed version of the game!

We had tons of fun, while also striking some deeply nostalgic strings of ours and hopefully of our fans. The rest of the video was filmed in Bob’s very own Sound Symmetry Studio in Athens, GR.”

Digital single of “Black Horses” is now available across all digital and streaming platforms! Pre-save the album, here: https://bfan.link/storm-the-walls

“Storm The Walls” will be released on March 18, 2022 as digipak CD, limited Aquamarin Blue 180g Vinyl (300 copies worldwide) and digital streaming and download format.

AFTERMATH Go Big with Billboard Urging Chicago to ‘Give Peace a Chance’ – Proceeds to Save the Children’s Ukraine Crisis Relief Fund

In these trying times, thrash metal group AFTERMATH have decided to take matters into their own hands and hit the streets to spread their message of peace. The band has gone big, taking out a billboard in their hometown of Chicago to help encourage viewers to “Give Peace a Chance”. Whether you’re walking, driving or biking by, Aftermath has taken the initiative to continue to promote their desire for order and harmony.

While Aftermath released this emotionally driven cover over two years ago, the world is currently faced with an entirely new crisis that requires a reminder for peace. The band re-imagined John Lennon’s cover of “Give Peace a Chance” during the initial wave of the Covid-19 pandemic. When lines were drawn and families and friendships were being torn apart from differing opinions and fear, Aftermath wanted to send out their friendly, musical reminder to take a step back from the chaos and “Give Peace a Chance”. Aftermath felt now was the perfect time to send out their heartfelt reminder one more time.

“We believe that John and Yoko’s message in “Give Peace a Chance” is timeless. When we recorded and released our re-imagined version two years ago it was relevant, and for the innocent victims of this senseless war it is even more relevant now. We will donate any further proceeds from this song to the Save the Children’s Ukraine Crisis Relief Fund.” – Kyriakos “Charlie” Tsiolis (Vocals)

Per Aftermath, “John Lennon’s urgent call for peace in “Give Peace a Chance” is more important today than ever, and our call for peace with this cover is the perfect message to follow up our previous album. We released a dark concept album with a bleak message and felt it was important to follow that up with something positive. The visuals in the video are as important as the lyrics in a way. We live in a visual world today and this video needed to get out the message of HOPE. Having a young girl be the focus of the video was our way of getting that across. Seeing only positive acts when she puts on Lennon’s famous glasses was the perfect visual metaphor. Lennon’s message is transmitted not only through his lyrics but also through the perspective created by his unique lenses”.

The video was directed by critically acclaimed video director Steven Nathan in New York City.

I’m loving my Skull Strings since I switched to them on my Bass, and can’t wait to try them on my 6 string too. They sound great with the loud distorted sounds of Ren Marabou and the Berserkers but also sound great with the quieter clean tone I use with Kessler Effect.
