Season of Mist os proud to announce the signing of dark neo-folk collective VÉVAKI! The band will release their second album,  ‘Fórnspeki,’ via Season of Mist in the fall of 2022. In celebration of the signing, the band is debuting a brand new single, “Jötnablót,” along with a music video. The song and video can be found at THIS LOCATION.

VÉVAKI comment on the signing: “We are beyond thrilled to join the Season of Mist family. To be a part of a label that respects artistic freedom and encourages artists to be themselves is all we could ever hope for. We cannot wait to continue with our ritualistic creations, and to share our vision with the world.“

Originally a solo project by singer and multi-instrumentalist Will Hunter, VÉVAKI is a folk band which draws from Nordic heathenism and animistic traditions. Myth, ritual and a connection with the natural world inform VÉVAKI’s music, which is both contemporary in sound and wide-ranging in instrumentation.

Debut album ‘Edda’ came in 2020 when VÉVAKI was a still a solo project, although Sigurboði Grétarsson and Florian Baudrain made contributions. Taking a collection of Old Norse poetry – the Poetic Edda – as its source material, ‘Edda’ breaths new life into these stories through its musical journey, at once beautiful and hypnotically heady.

VÉVAKI’s second album, ‘Fórnspeki’, finds the band expanding upon their sound while staying true to their folk roots and traditions.  Sigurboði Grétarsson has joined VÉVAKI as a full-time member, as has Gísli Gunnarsson and Hrafnhildur Inga Guðjónsdóttir. The new material is, says Will, broader and more mature sounding.

“VÉVAKI is very much based in our modern heathen tradition,” Will notes. “Sigurboði and I had been playing music for a while and we have used music as part of our personal spiritual practise. We had worked on some songs together but they were very much personal. Then we had a jam session in this cave in Iceland and afterwards we tried to record a song. I asked if Sigurboði would feature on it and he said yes, thankfully. Then I went home and used my home recording equipment to do a song which we sent to Danheim (Danish folk musician) and he put me on his online record label. And that’s how VÉVAKI started. We did a full album from there. Sigurboði featured heavily on it, even though he wasn’t in the band in any official capacity. But he did lots of drums and vocals and stuff like that.”

VÉVAKI employ various stringed instruments and percussion throughout their music, its dynamics buoyed by the complementary vocal styles of Will, Sigurboði and Hrafnhildur and the cinematic soundscapes sculpted by Gísli Gunnarsson. This comes to the fore on ‘Fórnspeki’.

“We decided to go a bit bigger,” says Will. “We started working on the second album and we brought in Gísli, and the sound has changed quite a bit, I think. It’s much more mature now. In my opinion, Gísli is the glue that holds us together. He comes from a modern classical background. And Hrafnhildur was an obvious choice, to add an important female dynamic. Her voice has a healing quality to it, I think, and that’s a big thing with the new album.”

Ritual and spiritual practises provide a structure to ‘Fórnspeki’.
“Our practice is very animistic,” says Will. “But you don’t have to be a super spiritual person to feel some sort of connection to nature. And we just hope that whoever is listening finds that our music brings some sort of connection for them.

Sigurboði adds, “‘Fórnspeki’ was composed around this concept of the ritual and of the performance. There will be a performance and ritual on stage, because that’s how the songs are imagined. And some of the songs came from rituals that we’ve done or have spawned from the rituals. For example, the song ‘Dísablót’ is based around a ritual that we would do. It’s got lots of chants in there that we would do and we hope that other people might be inspired. On this new album we have a lot of original lyrics. But it’s both based in the myth and the practice. It’s not all about the gods but also about the worship and the ritual.”

VÉVAKI is a fluid and resourceful project, employing traditional and contemporary instrumentation of various origins.

“We’re not going for historical accuracy,” points out Sigurboði. “We’re not married to the idea that it has to be a Nordic instrument. We’re not Vikings. We’re not the Shamans, or the Priests. We are the practitioners, the regular folk making the offerings.”

Adds Will, “We are trying to step away from that whole Viking thing. There are modern songs for modern beliefs. We put a lot of emphasis on that.”

Pre-save “HTH” HERE

H.T.H.”, which are simply abbreviations for our self-titled track, is a nod and an “ode to” some of the classic heavy metal songs and bands that we grew up on that influenced us all. Tony who is singing leads on this track, took some song titles, words and lines from obvious metal songs and made them work writing them into song complete lyrics. Our idea was to have that same “metal militia” type vibe. I believe we accomplished that.” – says Opus (Drummer of Hail the Horns).

This song “HAIL THE HORNS” was produced, mixed & mastered by Nicky Bellmore, who has also done the likes of Dee Snider (and also plays drums for his solo band as well), Corpse Grinder, Jasta/Hatebreed, Dead By Wednesday, Generation Kill, Toxic Holocaust, and many more!

Norwegian experimental progressive thrashers VORBID are finally back with new music!

4 years after the release of their critically acclaimed debut album “Mind”, Vorbid are set to further explore the outpost of progressive metal.

On the upcoming material the band has plunged even further into the technical and melodic aspects of prog, whilst at the same time maintaining the thrash elements they are known for.

Listen to “By the Edge of Mandala” featuring Chris Poland at https://orcd.co/bytheedge

Their first single By the Edge of Mandala is melodic, yet aggressive track with a guest performance from Chris Poland (Megadeth, OHM) on guitar.

The track is heavily laden with technical guitars, thrash and prog vocals, and infuriated drums.

A five-minute-long adventure into the relatively uncharted territory of progressive thrash, where soft melodic vocals meet harsh thrash growls, and where heavy rhythms are backed by melodic guitars.

By the Edge of Mandala was recorded at Dub Studio in Kristiansand with Endre Kirkesola as producer and Stian Gundersen from Blood Red Throne on bass.

Shortly after recording, the band recruited Hans Jakob Bjørheim as a permanent band member on bass.

CREDITS VORBID – BY THE EDGE OF MANDELA

Produced by Vorbid and Endre Kirkesola
Music and lyrics by Vorbid
Michael Briggs – Vocals, rhythm guitars
Daniel Emanuelsen – Vocals, lead guitars
Marcus Gullovsen – Drums
Stian Gundersen – Bass
Chris Poland – Guest lead guitar

Vorbid is a young, raw, and incredibly energetic metal band from Arendal, Norway.

The band stunned both fans and critics with their unique take on progressive metal infused with elements from thrash and melodic death metal.

The band was founded in 2013 while the members were still in their teens, and has since had rapid and intense growth into a band with their own unique style of metal where Vorbid combine the riffs and the intensity from the thrash genre with the techniques and melodies from the progressive rock genre.

Vorbid have won multiple contests, like 4th place in GBOB world finale (Global Battle of the Bands), Massive destruction, Rytmisk Fabrikk and the Norwegian finals in the Wacken Metal Battle as well as Bloodstock’s Metal 2 the Masses.

Both of the band’s previous releases, a self-titled EP from 2016, and their debut album Mind from 2018, received amazing reviews and got extensive media coverage. Landing them tours with Norwegian underground heavy weights such as Aura Noir, Obliteration and Einherjer.

In 2022 the Vorbid have returned with even more technically challenging and intriguing music, stepping up the game and proving themselves worthy of a place at the prog metal table.

PROGENY OF SUN Release New Single & Music Video ‘Anguish’

Finnish blackened death metal band PROGENY OF SUN released a new single and music video Anguish. The band is currently composing new tracks for their debut album.

The band comments:
“Juha once told us (composers) that for once we could create a song where the tempo is actually humane. Subsequently Jaakko went digging through the archives, found a couple of old unused riffs, and ended up using neither. The approach we took with this song was consciously a bit different from normal, although simultaneously the aim was to stay true to the characteristic sound of the band. Eventually all the rough edges of the original demo were smoothed out by joint efforts of the whole band. Even Juha was given the opportunity to add couple of fills. Then Niko made the vocals, once again crushing it with first try. This was the fastest produced song from start to finish during the band’s history so far. As soon as we heard the first demo version, we decided that this song would be prepared to be a single release right away.”

Single’s drums were recorded by Vesa Viitanen from Napalm to thy Face Prod. The track is mixed by Anton Sizikov (Empire Studios). Mastering is handled by Sebastian Has (Behemoth) from Sound Division Studio Poland.

After releasing their chart topping, critically acclaimed epos Ynglingaättens Öde, leading Swedish Viking metal wolf pack MÅNEGARM keep the heathen fire burning bright! Today the three-piece has unveiled a visually palpable lyric video for the album opener, “Freyrs blod”.

With the uncompromising ten-minute opus “Freyrs blod”, MÅNEGARM lure the listener deep into ancient times. The track spans a wide arc between black metal elements that flow into more melodic parts and even acoustic interludes with guitar and violin tunes, just to turn once again into thunderous soundscapes. With this majestic opener, MÅNEGARM showcase why they are regarded as Swedish genre pioneers with good reason, as they inimitably manage to combine vicious black metal foundations with classic folk and Viking elements.

MÅNEGARM on “Freyrs blod”:
“Here’s our brand new lyric video for the song”Freyrs blod”, taken from the new album Ynglingaättens Öde. “Freyrs blod” is the opener on the album and really shows the diversity of MÅNEGARM. Ingo Spörl of Hard Media has created this beautiful and captivating video, full of epic landscapes and nature, that really intertwines with the music in a stunning way!

So brothers & sisters; Sit back and enjoy our Freyrs blod!”

MÅNEGARM have made a name for themselves in the international scene by releasing nine full-length records since their debut, Nordstjärnans tidsålder, back in 1998. Now, the Scandinavian crew takes another stroll through ancient sagas and myths of long forgotten times on the successor to 2019’s chart-topping Fornaldarsagor with their 10th studio album, Ynglingaättens Öde (EN: the fate of the Ynglinga kin).

On Ynglingaättens Öde, MÅNEGARM incorporates Pagan inspired lyricism based on the old Norse poem Ynglingatal, that describes the fate of an old Norse dynasty – the house of Ynglinga. The album offers balanced variety and atmosphere, breathing new life into ancient myths. Vocalist Erik Grawsiö tells the stories of kings, warriors and battles with clear vocals and contrasts them with grim growls and fierce battle cries! With Ynglingaättens Öde, MÅNEGARM underline their standing as spearheads of the world of Viking metal once more and keep Pagan traditions alive, even after 25 years of existence.

MÅNEGARM on the album:
“Thousands of working hours turned into this beast – our new album, Ynglingaättens Öde. We truly believe this album is our strongest and most complete album to date and despite the dark days of the pandemic, we have created a concept album that is 100% MÅNEGARM and packed with strong melodies, riffs and powerful choruses. This time, we explore an old Swedish Norse dynasty of rulers where we detail their deeds, their rule and above all – their deaths.

So come join us on this journey and meet the fate of the Yngliga kin!”

1. Freyrs blod
2. Ulvhjärtat
3. Adils fall

FEUERSCHWANZ Release Video for Very Personal Song ‘Das Herz eines Drachen’

Following their massive German chart entry at #1 with their new studio album Memento Mori in the beginning of 2022, FEUERSCHWANZ have released an official video for what is likely their most personal song to date – “Das Herz eines Drachen” [en: The Heart of a Dragon]. The medieval folk rockers’ ballad shows a previously unknown side of the band with its evident seriousness. In a fire lit by burning guitar sounds and flute melodies, Captain Feuerschwanz mourns his fallen father with his head held high. A song that brings hope in dark times and once again underlines the credo of the last studio album – Memento Mori!

Hauptmann Feuerschwanz on “Das Herz eines Drachen”:
“Das Herz eines Drachen” is a very personal song for me. To find words and sounds for feelings for which there are no words is almost impossible, but with the help of my friends from Feuerschwanz I mastered this challenge.
What if the world feels so threatening that the nervous system goes into a freeze? Perhaps that’s why it’s no coincidence that my second profession, as a psychologist, deals with the effects of trauma on our nervous systems. “Das Herz eines Drachen” is a song that is supposed to bring healing and reconciliation for everything that hurt us when we were young. I have found a new share of authentic strength and connection with my family and to the whole world again through my Dragonheart.”

After the great chart entry at #1 the new FEUERSCHWANZ album Memento Mori remained in the Top 120 of the official German album charts for a total of 11 weeks.

On Memento Mori, FEUERSCHWANZ finally make the step away from the simpler humor of earlier days, to one of the most important bands in German Folk-Rock!

With chanting violin playing, Memento Mori starts its heroic journey with its eponymous opener. The song turns out to be a melodic rock anthem with a well-known medieval character, a blazing guitar riff and life-affirming lyrics. On “Untot im Drachenboot”, the squad around Hauptmann Feuerschwanz sets off for new musical shores in a Viking ship full of undead warriors. “Rausch der Barberei”, on the other hand delivers a violent, raw voice and driving drumming that send its listeners into unbridled frenzy. On “Krampus”, FEUERSCHWANZ sing in a canon of vocals and instruments about the ancient legend of the demonic companion of St. Nicholas, who is dressed in fur and a horned mask. “Hannibal” on the other hand embarks on a raging battle of powerful choirs, swirling violin and guitar solos and driving drums, led by army commander Hannibal. The crowning finale of the almost 40-minute adventure is provided by “Skaldenmet” with its proudly advancing bass.

In trademark FEUERSCHWANZ style, Memento Mori is about great adventures, historic battles and outstanding heroic deeds. FEUERSCHWANZ manage to stay true to their trademarks and at the same time venture into new musical realms. Fans of the band can look forward to an extensive deluxe edition of the album, which extends the running time of Memento Mori by almost double! Two additional CDs feature instrumental versions of all eleven tracks as well as the cover CD Die Glorreichen Sieben (The Magnificent Seven), which includes seven epic reissues from Amon Amarth to Die Ärzte and The Weeknd.

FEUERSCHWANZ on the new album:
“You take nothing with you to your grave, except your coffin… Memento Mori is the direct successor to Die Letzte Schlacht! The world of Hauptmann Feuerschwanz is in flames, overrun by the living dead and scourged by religious zealots… All of this sounds frighteningly real, even in Anno Domini 2021, so it’s time to defy the storm once again and celebrate life. Let’s live here, let’s live now – until death sharpens his knife!”
