Legendary GILBERT O’SULLIVAN Announces Details of New Album “Driven”, First Energetic R&B Single Revealed, Ft. KT Tunstall

BMG has released Take Love, the first single to be taken from GILBERT O’SULLIVAN’s twentieth studio album, Driven, out July 22nd. Take Love finds Gilbert and guest vocalist, Scottish singer-songwriter KT Tunstall trading lines over a sizzlingly energetic R&B arrangement.

Incredibly, fifty years have elapsed since Gilbert O’Sullivan found himself celebrating a six-week run at the top of the U.S. Billboard Chart with Alone Again Naturally – the song which prompted America to commence an improbable love affair with this Irish-born, yet most British of singer-songwriters. The song has been covered live by artists including Neil Diamond, Nina Simone, Pet Shop Boys and Elton John. It’s perhaps no surprise that ensuing generations of acclaimed artists – including Paul Weller, Squeeze and The Lemon Twigs – proudly count themselves as Gilbert O’Sullivan fans. Other notable admirers include Tim Burgess (The Charlatans), who personally invited him to host two of his legendary Twitter Listening Parties.

Gilbert’s new album Driven follows his acclaimed Ethan Johns-produced, self-titled 2018 album which was awarded 4-stars in MOJO magazine. The thirteen songs that comprise Driven reveal a songwriter whose ability to sniff out hitherto undiscovered sources of low-hanging melodic fruit is keener than ever. Produced by Andy Wright and recorded with a live band at the legendary RAK studios, the unexpected velocity at which the songs came together bears testament to the instant chemistry generated between O’Sullivan, Wright and a house band featuring Pat Murdoch (Beyonce, Simply Red, Chrissie Hynde), Rich Milner (Morcheeba, James Morrison) and Geoff Holdroyde (Take That, Big Linda).

This chemistry is present on album opener Love Casualty which features something close to JJ Cale in the interplay between Gilbert and Pat Murdoch’s supple guitar ornamentations.  In addition to Gilbert’s duet with KT Tunstall, the album features another guest turn from big fan and Simply Red frontman Mick Hucknall. Mick brings his sublime timbre to Let Bygones Be Bygones, a song which offers a timely corrective to the increasingly polarised thinking that characterises discourse in a social media age.

Gilbert’s extraordinary ability for exploring the human condition is exemplified on Hey Man, which offers snapshots of decisive moments in the lives of four separate characters, who all have in common that things may never be the same again beyond these frozen moments in time.

On With Body and Mind, we’re presented an adhesively catchy audit of blessings which takes the form of an internal dialogue about its protagonist’s lifetime lover.  More topical issues are explored in You and Me Babe, where Gilbert juxtaposes the things that make our lives meaningful against the turbulence of the world at large, with a subtle reference to climate change. Whilst, framed by an exquisitely tender string arrangement, If Only Love Had Ears is, by any metric, one of the most beautiful songs to bear O’Sullivan’s name.

Reflective songs come in the form of Let Me Know – and another instantly memorable standout on Driven –  Blue Anchor Bay. The former recalls the first decade of Gilbert’s career, in which he resisted serious relationships for fear that it might have an effect on his songwriting. The latter, finds him reflecting upon simpler times, retreating to his teenage years in Swindon and the regular school trips which would see him and his friends head out to the Somerset beach immortalised in the song’s title. The result is the sort of sepia jazz standard one might sooner expect to find on an album by Leon Redbone or Mose Allison.

At its core, Driven is an album that offers a nuanced portrait man reaffirming his own values and sense of self in an increasingly chaotic world. Never a conventional songwriter, he perhaps conforms to the description of a British chansonnier, praised by none other than Lenny Kaye – rock scholar and guitarist with the Patti Smith Group – for “songs [that] are artfully constructed, lyrically original with a fine sense of filigree detail.” As with Paul McCartney and the young Harry Nilsson – two songwriters for whom he retains a huge fondness – Gilbert O’Sullivan’s reach extends beyond the parameters of rock’n’roll.

TÓMARÚM have premiered Condemned to a Life of Grief, the third single to be taken from their upcoming debut album Ash in Realms of Stone Icons, with an accompanying music video via Knotfest. The Atlanta, Georgia duo teamed up with Chariot of Black Moth for the track’s visual accompaniment – a stark black and white film of melancholic moving images set to Condemned to a Life of Grief’s emotive progressive black metal stylings.

Ash in Realms of Stone Icons is due for release via Prosthetic Records on May 6.

WATCH THE MUSIC VIDEO FOR CONDEMNED TO A LIFE OF GRIEF VIA KNOTFEST HERE.

Condemned to a Life of Grief is now available on all streaming platforms.

Speaking on the track premiere, Kyle Walburn (guitars, vocals, programming) comments: “Condemned to a Life of Grief was the first song written for the band, as well as my first real attempt writing music in general. Intended as an introductory track, the song makes use of buildup and repetition and gradually picks up the pace, ending triumphantly with a shred solo. Lyrically, the song describes the onset of my struggles with mental health, setting the story for our hour-long exercise in anguish.”

Formed in 2017, TÓMARÚM  – which translates from Icelandic to “empty space” – cover topics such as depression, anxiety, loss, and worthlessness over songs inspired equally by atmospheric black metal and technical death metal. The band’s 2020 debut EP, Wounds Ever Expanding, quickly generated an online buzz and garnered praise for its effective fusion of atmospheric black metal and technical death metal – after which Kyle Walburn and Brandon Iacovella (guitars, vocals, contrabass) set to work on Ash in Realms of Stone Icons.

The seven tracks on Ash in Realms of Stone Icons feature session bass from Arran McSporran of VIRVUM, session drums from Spencer Moore of INFERI, and a beautiful cover painted by Mariusz Lewandowski, and display TÓMARÚM at their sharpest and most vulnerable to date with Ash in Realms of Stone Icons being the ultimate declaration of intent from a band with their sights set on breaking barriers.

Upcoming TÓMARÚM live show:
May 6 – Bogg’s Social & Supply – Atlanta, GA (Ash in Realms of Stone Icons release show)

Ash in Realms of Stone Icons tracklist:

  1. Introspection I
  2. Condemned to a Life of Grief
  3. In This Empty Space
  4. Introspection II
  5. Where No Warmth Is Found
  6. As Black Forms From Grey
  7. Awake Into Eternal Slumber

Norwegian BLODHEMN Join Dark Essence Records

Since first appearing in the Norwegian scene in 2004, BLODHEMN founder Invisus has worked tirelessly to further Black Metal’s iconic sound with his distinctive and aggressive approach, releasing three full-length albums, on which he performed all the vocals and instruments.

With a live lineup that, aside from Invisus on vocals,  includes Hauk (AMONG GODS) on bass, Dan on drums, Xarim (DJEVELKULT, DEN SAAKALDTE) on guitars and Anneland (ELSKOV, VONBROT, MUNNHUGGER, CAPRISE) on guitars, BLODHEMN has rightly earned a stellar reputation for its work both in the studio and in front of an audience.

Joining the Dark Essence Records roster for the release of the band’s fourth full-length album, has, it could be said, been twelve years in the making for BLODHEMN, as Invisus explains:

I had a good experience working with some of the Dark Essence people in the past.  Granted, at that time it was more on the music production side, but still, it has been a collaboration since recording “Brenn Alle Bruer” 12 years ago.

Inking the deal with Dark Essence Records, therefore, feels like finally finding the right street door after a long night out. Their good reputation amongst artists, and in the industry in general, was key to my decision to kick open this particular door.

I’m looking forward to finally getting the new album out and joining forces with the Dark Essence team to force-feed you thrashy black metal with a glaze of rock n’ roll. Skål!

Details of the upcoming album will be coming up in the near future, and in the meantime, more information about BLODHEMN can be found on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/Blodhemnnorway or on the band’s website at https://blodhemn.no

MISALIGNED’s New Single Handles Struggles with Mental Health Issues + Substance Abuse

Finnish melodic death metallers MISALIGNED have released their second single from the upcoming debut album “Colours” to be released in May 2022.

Band backgrounds the story:

“Misaligned has always been into handling themes like mental health issues and intoxicants on their lyrics. Our society reflects a dystopic image that alcohol, drugs and mental health issues are something that you prefer to keep silent about. Silver Moth symbolizes another deceitful savior that aims to escapism to ease the pain of the dystopic world by drowning the sorrow to alcohol and drugs. And that is something that leads to even worse perdition on the war against the addictions and broken minds.

Musically the song has some Gothenburg style melodic death metal vibes. And the message is pretty much that we cannot win every fight, but losing the war isn’t an option.”

Industrial Metal Veteran SKOLD Unearths Lost Album From 2002, Previews Opening Track

“The past is never dead. It’s not even past” proclaimed William Faulkner. If anybody knows the truth of this statement, it’s longtime producer/songwriter/musician Tim Skold. After cutting his teeth with metal bands in his home country of Sweden, Skold came into his own with his eponymous industrial metal project, SKOLD, releasing his self-titled debut album Skold in 1996. The album was extremely well-received appearing in major studio films (Disturbing Behavior, Universal Soldier: The Return) and establishing Skold as a one-of-a-kind talent both in front of and behind the mixing board. On the cusp of completing the highly anticipated follow-up album, Skold was recruited by industrial empresario Marilyn Manson to join his band in 2001, touring and producing several albums and singles up to 2008.

From there Skold picked up where his solo career left off releasing more albums under the Skold moniker, but one album continued to linger: the abandoned follow-up album. Sure, several tracks had been leaked and downloaded innumerable times on the internet (at a time when digital music distribution was a wild wild west of piracy a la Napster) but the album seemed to be a piece of Skold’s past that refused to die, or even stay past. So, the artist got to work on finishing the mythic Dead God album (also known as Disrupting The Orderly Routine Of The Institution), mastering the album from the original full resolution mixes, and is now set to release it on all formats on April 15. This set crackles with turn of the century digital fury and paranoia, sounding as fresh today as it was groundbreaking then!

By way of previewing the album, the lead off track, “Don’t Pray For Me,” is being released to all digital platforms.

DEMONICAL Reveal New Video And Single ‘We Conquer The Throne’

Swedish death metal tyrants DEMONICAL are premiering a music video for a new song titled “We Conquer The Throne” in anticipation of their seventh studio album “Mass Destroyer”, set for release on May 6th on Agonia Records. Click through the link below to watch the video, which was directed by Tobias Rydsheim of Svartna Film.

Struck by a burst of inspiration, DEMONICAL indulged in a creative spree immediately after the release of their antecedent offering, “World Domination”; and with expertise worthy of death metal veterans, shaped it into “Mass Destroyer”. Developed in less than two years, the album reflects the energy that spawned its creation, and keeps to the Swede’s HM2-beaten track, promising a few twists along the way. Adorned in an old fashioned attire, “Mass Destroyer” packs a gruesome punch, embodies organic sounding and delivers a truly fiendish experience from well-seasoned old-school death-dealers.

“A huge inspirational boost hit us so why waste time and wait? Just hammer while the metal is hot,” explains the band, as to what seems to be a tried and true process, that already preceded “Hellsworn” (2009), “Death Infernal” (2011) and “Darkness Unbound” (2013). “The outcome is here, our seventh full-length and another vicious Demonical assault of Stockholm-style death metal madness and beyond,” the band comments. “Once again and as always, we wanted to crawl back in time and explore the early days of death metal but with traces and hints of various other metallic subgenres.”

Mark Riddick (Absu, Arsis) added his gruesome touch to “Mass Destroyer” in designing the fiendish cover artwork. Glashuset and Sellnoise Studios were used for recording with Johan Hjelm and Jonas Arnberg behind the helm, while Karl Daniel Liden mixed and mastered the album at his Tri-Lamb Studios. “We worked with the same production team as last time and the result turned out nothing but great,” the band continues. “A dynamic and breathing album we all feel very satisfied and proud off. Can’t wait to destroy the masses!”

Tracklisting:
1. We Conquer The Throne
2. Sun Blackened
3. Fallen Mountain
4. Wrathspawn
5. Dödsmarsch
6. Lifeslave
7. Cemented In Ire
8. By Hatred Bound
