HOLLIS BROWN Release New Rolling Stones Cover ‘Under My Thumb’

HOLLIS BROWN recreate The Rolling Stones’ Seminal First Original Album, ‘In The Aftermath’, out February 4th via Mascot Label Group/Cool Green Recordings.

Watch below Hollis Brown performing “Under My Thumb” live-in-studio.

The deliciously depraved outcome of an all-night rock n’ roll riot, ‘In The Aftermath’ follows the release of Hollis Brown’s ‘Gets Loaded,’ saluting Velvet Underground’s Loaded.

Pre-order ‘In The Aftermath’ HERE

Hollis Brown’s upcoming album, ‘In The Aftermath,’ is the deliciously depraved outcome of an all-night rock n’ roll riot. The Queens, New York-based quintet escaped to the Poconos to record with a few handles of whiskey, and, in one 24-hour session, ran down the Stone’s seminal first album of all originals, 1966’s ‘Aftermath.’ Tracked live in the studio with minimal overdubs, ‘In The Aftermath’ is potent proof the five-piece group is one of the last great American rock n’ roll bands. The album will be released on February 4th via Mascot Label Group/Cool Green Recordings.

“It was a whirlwind recording session—we were on no sleep, and getting liquored up. You can definitely hear the looseness on that final track, ‘Going Home,’” singer-guitarist Mike Montali recalls, laughing. He continues: “We weren’t focused on cleanliness—we were after a feeling.”

Coming on the heels of their most successful studio album to-date – 2019’s Ozone Park, which earned rave reviews from Rolling Stone, Billboard, Paste Magazine, Pop Matters, Relix, and Goldmine – ‘In The Aftermath’ was an artistic inevitable for Hollis Brown. Previously, Hollis Brown issued, ‘Gets Loaded,’ saluting Velvet Underground’s ‘Loaded.’  The five-piece band enjoyed doing the VU album so much they began to joke about doing a “Hollis Brown presents…” series, covering formative records in their artistic continuum.

‘Aftermath’ became the Stones album to dive into for a myriad of reasons. For one, it’s become something of a lost classic as it’s the first album to contain all Stones originals, including the defining track, “Paint It Black.” Also, many of the songs are concise ultra-catchy rock n’ roll rave-ups that mine similar blues and country roots to Hollis Brown’s own signature aesthetic.

Yet, on ‘In The Aftermath,’ Hollis Brown doesn’t try to out-Stones the Stones. Instead, they find clever ways to salute the Stones legacy. For the first album single, “Under My Thumb,” they distill the track down to a punky snarl inspired by the lean and mean ‘Some Girls’ album. Hollis Brown turn in a faithful reading of “Dontcha Bother Me” replete with Muddy Waters-approved slide guitar, seething vocals, and lonesome harmonica. The guys bravely tackle “Paint It Black,” and harness the ominous power of the track through swapping its classic, world-music perspective for a muscular guitar-rock approach. Here, the drums are essentialized down to an infectious garage-rock beat that perfectly aligns with the burly guitar riffage.

Hollis Brown has amassed an engaged fanbase through touring tirelessly, making its way through the U.S. and Europe, both on their own and supporting the likes of Citizen Cope, Counting Crows, Jackie Greene, Jesse Malin, and the Zombies, among others. The guys pinched the band name from the Bob Dylan song, “Ballad of Hollis Brown,” and its moniker neatly epitomizes the group’s commitment to melding a signature Americana blend with fine song-craft. Hollis Brown will perform select sets of ‘In The Aftermath’ on its upcoming February and March tour –  and inspiration from the album’s freewheeling recording sessions will definitely impact the band’s next album of all originals which is mostly written.

“Making this record sent us back to the drawing board,” Mike reveals. “It was about going back to the essence of American roots music—blues and country—which is a tradition our band was founded upon.”

In a world of uncertainty, there’s few things that will lift your spirits like a raucous, rollicking, rambunctious slice of Celtic folk/punk, and Swedish/Irish sextet SIR REG are more than happy to oblige! Formed by Irishman Brendan Sheehy, who left his home-town of Dublin and headed to Sweden with a guitar and a dream – to put together the most amazing band possible.

Boasting songs that bring together everything from the issues of modern day society to finding the right bar on a Saturday night, powered by strong melodies and irresistible energy. Add to the mix an explosive live show and it’s easy to see why, SIR REG have a formidable reputation in the Celtic punk and rock scene. Since the fledging band burst onto the scene in 2009 they have released five critically acclaimed albums and have performed on many of Europe’s biggest stages alongside bands like The Mahones, The Misfits, Thin Lizzy and The Real McKenzies.

2022 sees the band return with album number six, the quite remarkable ‘Kings of Sweet Feck All’. On which the band continue to stand with those struggling to make their voices and their opinions heard, bolstered by songs of grit and passion, without ever losing sight of the underdog spirit.

First new single is called ‘Open The Pubs‘ and is released January 14 on Despotz Records. Here’s the band’s comment on the restrictions-linked topic:
–
“If anyone told you a few years ago that pubs would be closed for months on end, you’d think they were having a laugh! Was no laughing matter indeed! That delicious pint of Guinness your favourite bartender pulled for you was suddenly taken away and you could only dream about it midst the ongoing nightmare!”

THE HELLFREAKS Unleash Beastie Boys Cover + Video ‘Sabotage’

After recently signing with Napalm Records and shaking things up with new single, “Old Tomorrow”, Hungarian outfit THE HELLFREAKS are at it again with their blazing cover of massive classic “Sabotage” by New York hip hop legends Beastie Boys! Showcasing more of what can be expected from their stellar discography now boasting millions of streams, “Sabotage” doubles down on the catchy, trademark, high-octane alt-metal/groove side of the band’s sound.

Frontwoman Shakey Sue’s raspy punk rock vocals and angsty attitude shine bright atop crisp, modern production – bass and drums provide a tight and thick foundation, while guitars go crazy with pitched, Morello-inspired solos, before leading into a kickass breakdown – guaranteed to get the mosh pits crazy! After making a name for themselves internationally by touring in Europe and the USA, “Sabotage” is a merciless demonstration of what Budapest-based THE HELLFREAKS have in store on their upcoming full-length album – ready to take over the world!

THE HELLFREAKS on “Sabotage”:
“Everyone who knows our history might not be surprised by the unpredictable steps of THE HELLFREAKS. We love to challenge ourselves and see this mindset as the oil for our engine, that is why we decided to do something we never did before – to cover a song that represents a legendary piece of rock music history.

The four members of THE HELLFREAKSare from different musical corners, so it wasn’t an easy task to find the song that feels right to all of us, but when the idea of Beastie Boys “Sabotage” popped up in the air, we were all immediately on board! We admire the band, but at the same, we saw how we could spice the song with some HELLFREAKS spirit to turn it somehow to our own. That being said we decided to record the instrumental part not instrument by instrument, part by part as it’s usual, but recorded it all together, live, to keep the essence of Beastie Boys in our own version too. On the top we wanted to set a sign of our roots visually as well. The New York based Beastie Boys came straight from the undergound and had a massive influence on rock music till these days. To respect that, we recorded the video in the heart of our hometown, Budapest, over the rooftops of our city on the Gellért Hill, which is also the home of Hungary’s Liberty Statue.

We loved working on this very much and hope that you’ll enjoy our version!”

NICK D’VIRGILIO (Big Big Train, ex-Spock’s Beard), NEAL MORSE (Transatlantic, NMB, ex-Spock’s Beard), and ROSS JENNINGS (Haken, Novena) have announced their debut album titled ‘Troika’ will be released on Feb 25th, 2022.

Today, the band are pleased to share the new video from the album’s second single and opening track “Everything I Am”, directed by Christian Rios.

Neal Morse had this to say about the track:

“A long time ago my parents allowed my brothers and I to go see the “Woodstock” movie in the thea-ter. It was rated R and that was kind of a big deal at the time. I was rather overwhelmed with all the great music in that film and one of the groups that I fell in love with and stayed in love with was Cros-by, Stills and Nash. You can definitely hear their influence in this song as the vocal blend that we got I believe almost gets to that level!

“I wrote this song one morning when my wife was having a bad day and it’s about how no matter what happens our lives are fully inner twined no matter what.“

‘Troika’ will be available as Ltd. CD Edition / Gatefold 2LP+CD / Digital Album and is available for pre-order here: https://dvirgiliomorsejennings.lnk.to/Troika
