Godfathers of Finnish Metal SARCOFAGUS Refuse To Die! Envoy of Death Is Back Once Again!

Kimmo Kuusniemi: “In 2020 I thought I had finally buried Sarcofagus for good in the Valley Of The Kings with the last “Absence of Light” Compact Cassette release.

Right after I returned from Sarcofagus funeral service in Egypt I received a call telling me: “It is Nuclear War Now here!” First I thought that what we had been singing and dreading about in 80s had finally happened, Nuclear War Now! Well turned out it was a record label from USA who wanted to re-release the “Envoy of Death” as vinyl. Right after this I received a call from Bloodrock Records, Italy who wanted to release “Envoy Of Death” as CD.

Well… That is quite cool! After 41 years “Envoy Of Death” is still in demand and respected. What more can a mortal musician hope than to make music that is immortal! It makes all the countless hours, days, weeks, years spent in living and breathing your own music worth awhile.

There is also talk to release some old Sarcofagus never before released music, but more about that later.

The NWN “Envoy Of Death” re-release is a very high quality product and the clear/blue marble version is super cool! The “Envoy of Death” NWN re-release is out now!

The Bloodrock Records CD release date has not yet been confirmed but it should be out in September.

So check these out and stay tuned for my next project called “Ancient Streaming Assembly”. “

Sarcofagus “Envoy Of Death” Nuclear War Now Re-Release 2021
(Description by C. Conrad)

Although Britain is rightfully credited for the historic effect that its heavy metal scene of the late 1970s and early 1980s had on the genre as a whole, the significance of a scene that was developing at the same time to its northeast should not be overlooked.

In Sweden, for example, bands like Heavy Load, Gotham City, and Mercy were beginning to establish themselves. Similarly, in Sweden’s neighbour to the east, a group named Sarcofagus emerged as Finland’s first heavy metal band under the primary direction of Kimmo Kuusniemi.

Sarcofagus first released the “Go to Hell / All Those Lies” single in 1979, and then quickly released its first two albums in 1980, the very same year in which Iron Maiden released its self-titled debut.

The first of these recordings, “Cycle of Life,” provided evidence of a talented group that was on the brink of fully defining itself. While it is a worthy accomplishment in its own right, “Cycle of Life” was to be overshadowed by its imminent successor, “Envoy of Death.”

Over the span of its first three recordings, Sarcofagus underwent a few lineup changes, which culminated in the quintet of Kuusniemi (guitars), Juha Kiminki (bass), Ari-Pekka Roitto (drums), Esa Kotilainen (keyboards), and Jukka Homi (vocals) on the second album.

Following the “Go to Hell / All Those Lies” single, the addition of Kotilainen, one of the most accomplished keyboardists in all of Finland, proved to be of essential significance to the band’s climactic sound, which had fully developed by the time the second album was recorded. Although it is heavy metal at its core, “Envoy of Death” also exudes elements of heavy psych, which are often expressed in the atmospheres created by the keyboard passages and the twisted, effect-laden guitar leads. While this sound is easily observed by even the most casual listener, what is perhaps more elusive is the thematic concept that frames the album and gives purpose to each song.

“Envoy of Death” narrates the story of six lives that have followed their own unique paths to their ultimate conclusions and now face final judgment. The opening/title track introduces the listener to the trial, and each of the six ensuing tracks recounts the life and death of one of the “defendants,” whose fate is soon to be determined.

As a longtime fan of Sarcofagus, and “Envoy of Death” in particular, Nuclear War Now! is honoured to reissue this masterpiece of pioneering Finnish heavy metal, which shall serve to remind us of our own black contracts, whose fulfilment awaits us at our pending demise.

ZORNHEYM Unleash Brand New Music Video And Sign Worldwide Record Deal With Noble Demon

Stockholm’s ZORNHEYM have announced their worldwide signing with Germany’s powerhouse label Noble Demon for the release of the band’s sophomore album, entitled “The Zornheim Sleep Experiment”.

Founded and led by multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Zorn, who was determined to shake up the traditional “metal-meets-symphony” approach after leaving iconic black metallers Dark Funeral, ZORNHEYM quickly grew from an ambitious idea into a dramatic musical and narrative driven concept revolving around the horrors of a mental institution and its prisoners. The band’s critically acclaimed debut album, “Where Hatred Dwells and Darkness Reigns,” opened the doors of the asylum in 2017, introducing the terrifying concept and gruesome characters within. Four years later and featuring 10 new tracks of powerful, cinematic and mesmerizing symphonic extreme metal, ZORNHEYM‘s upcoming album picks up where they left off, inviting the listener on a distracting journey, straight into the depths of the asylum! Once again, ZORNHEYM create their very own wall of sound by using a real choir and a string quartet and bring the story to life in a graphic novel that accompanies and expands upon the stories behind the album!

In support of the new full-length record, ZORNHEYM just unleashed a brand new music video for the track “Keep The Devil Away”, streaming here:

“The crushing, mid-tempo song, ”Keep the Devil Away” is your first invitation to “The Zornheim Sleep Experiment”. This melodic yet heavy song takes us deeper into the story of what cruel and unusual treatment the inmates face within the walls of the terrifying asylum behind Zornheym’s concept. Prepare for an aural assault of orchestration and devastating metal riffs that could leave you questioning your sanity.” the band comments.

Tracklist:

  1. Corpus Vile
  2. An Evil Within
  3. Dead Silence
  4. Keep The Devil Away
  5. Slumber Comes In Time
  6. Black Nine
  7. The Veiling Of Bettelheims Eye
  8. The Revelation
  9. Keep Cutting
  10. The Madness That Lurks Within (Epilogue)

“The Zornheim Sleep Experiment” will be coming out October 22nd on Noble Demon and is now available for pre-order at THIS LOCATION

English extreme metal legends CARCASS have released an animated video created by Costin Chioreanu (OPETH, NAPALM DEATH) for a new single, “Dance of IXTAB (Psychopomp & Circumstance March No. 1 In B),” from their massively anticipated 7th studio album, “Torn Arteries,” that’s out September 17th from Nuclear Blast Records.

CARCASS’ founding vocalist/bassist Jeff Walker describes “Dance of IXTAB (Psychopomp & Circumstance March No. 1 In B)”:

“The song is a foot stomping festival anthem that will go unheard in an empty, vacuous, post covid world “stadium”, where used Lateral Flow Tests blow around as litter in the breeze.”

Ferocious and uncompromising in their execution, CARCASS’s ability to intricately dissect the innards of death metal, and display them for us to sonically understand has been their point of excellence for over three decades. In 2019 the band released their first single in over 5 years “Under The Scalpel Blade,” followed by a 4 song EP entitled “Despicable” (October 2020), setting a potent precedent for the full length album coming in September: “Torn Arteries.” With the album title itself referencing an old demo created by original drummer Ken Own back in the 80’s, “Torn Arteries“sits as a bookend on the modern side of the CARCASS discography, connecting directly back to where everything began over 30 years ago.
The album artwork also rings reminiscent of the grotesque photography that appears on classic CARCASS album covers like “Reek Of Putrefaction“ of “Symphonies of Sickness.” Artist Zbigniew Bielak traveled outside his normal wheelhouse to bring forth a time lapsed set of photos showing vegetables shaped like a heart, rotting over time upon a white plate. This form of artwork was influenced by Japanese Kusôzu, meaning: ‘painting of the nine stages of a decaying corpse.’

“It’s very clean, white, which we’ve never done before,” explains vocalist and bassist Jeff Walker, “it doesn’t look evil, or typically death metal, but I like how clean it is; almost like a coffee table book.” This new album presents images, lyrics, and sounds that so distinctly scream CARCASS, but ferry us into a new era of production, songwriting, and art all together.

“I think as our 7th album, it does stand out from the others both sonically and stylistically,” says Walker. “You can definitely tell that it’s CARCASS; when you drop that needle on the vinyl, when you hear that guitar tone, you can tell it’s Bill Steer, but each album is always a product of its time.”

With “Torn Arteries,” each track stands unique from the rest in its approach to guitar, bass, vocals and drumming, along with all the finer details. Filthy and dominating guitar work creates thick layers of tone and melody, piling on top of each other like the weight of dead flesh in tracks like “Kelly’s Meat Emporium.”

“The working title for Kelly’s was originally ‘Stock Carcass,’” laughs Walker. “We knew that one was a real meat and potatoes track for the album.” Meanwhile the elevated speed and catchy beat in “Dance of Ixtab” tell a robust and airier story, one that is certain to get a reaction from live crowds. “We built this song around the beat. We had an approach to each song that was a definite idea. It’s all about ‘what haven’t we done before?’”

Recording and Production for “Torn Arteries” wasn’t as simple as sitting down for a few weeks and knocking it all out, but rather spread out over the course of approximately 1 year bouncing back and forth between England and Sweden. Initially, drummer Daniel Wilding did session work in Sweden at Studio Gröndahl with David Castillo while guitars were recorded at The Stationhouse with James Atkinson in Leeds, England. Eventually needing some form of residential location to finalize vocals, bass, and other guitarwork, the band headed back to studio Gröndahl in Sweden to continue work in a very relaxed atmosphere with Castillo. “There was no real big plan to do it this way, the process just organically grew on its own,” says Walker.

Most will find that the only real struggle when indulging in “Torn Arteries“ is fighting the desire to start it over the second it finishes. It covers substantial new ground for a band with such a reputation, while still retaining that addictive, time honored CARCASS sound that has come to represent the face of true death metal.

DONNA CANNONE (Feat. Soilwork/ Nightflight Orchestra + Ex-Thundermother Members) Felease New Single ‘Nothing to Do’

“A song about the division, isolation and negativity created by the frenetic usage of social media. An inspiration to look at the real world and to explore friendship that might be right there, next to you”. // Donna Cannone

After opening the book on Donna Cannone with the gloriously hook-filled slice of melodic rock n roll, that was debut single ‘Cross the Line’, the Swedish/Italian quartet, featuring two former Thundermothers as well as  the Soilwork/The Nightflight Orchestra main man Bjorn ‘Speed’ Strid are back with the equally wonderful ‘Nothing to Do’. Focussing on the influence of social media on everything in the world, ‘Nothing to Do’ urges the listener to take a look at the real world, the answers you seek might right there waiting!

‘It all started as a game, something fun to do. As it should be.’

And with that, Donna Cannone was born. Former Thundermother member Giorgia Cateri (guitars) and her fellow Italian ex-pat found themselves heading to a rehearsal room a short while ago to play some music and, in their own words, ‘have some fun.’ Giorgia’s former Thundermother bandmate Tilda Stenqvist was brought in on drums as the trio began putting together a number of new songs. A knock at the door brought a surprise as, guitar in hand, Bjorn ‘Speed’ Strid (Soilwork, The Nightflight Orchestra) had heard what the band were up to and wanted in. Soon the quartet were recording demos, and one of these demos fell into the hands of Swedish label Despotz Records and a deal was soon done.

It is with great excitement we announce our signing with Despotz Records. We believe we can achieve some amazing things together and this unit is currently brewing something very interesting. -Something real, wicked, and fiery, that will both cross bridges and cross lines’

The first fruits of this collaboration is the band’s debut single – the infectious ‘Cross the Line’, taken from their upcoming album scheduled for early 2021.
