PARADISE LOST Release ‘The Lost and the Painless’ Limited Edition on November 26th

Creators, pioneers & purveyors of the Gothic Doom Metal scene which came to prominence in the early 90s, Britain’s PARADISE LOST rose from humble Northern roots to become one of the UK’s leading artists in the metal genre throughout the decade and beyond, remaining as relevant and revered as ever to this day after a career spanning over three decades.

To mark the 30 years since the release of the band’s iconic sophomore album, Gothic, Peaceville will release The Lost And The Painless – a stunning limited edition expansive 7 disc hardback book featuring 6CDs and 1DVD, containing the full works of both the formative and Peaceville years of the UK Gods. From the early incarnation of the band finding their feet in a death metal landscape which was still in its relative infancy, to their early live appearances showcasing the clear talent of the Yorkshire quintet, this deluxe set also incorporates the band’s legendary studio albums in the shape of the influential deathly doom debut, Lost Paradise, as well as the ground-breaking & genre-defining follow-up, Gothic.

The included DVD features four shows, leading with the ‘Live Death’ concert from 1989, followed by a trilogy of captured performances between 1990 & 1991, as Paradise Lost were beginning to mark their gradual ascension with a host of now classic tracks from their early repertoire.

The Lost Paradise and Gothic albums, plus the Gothic EP have been specially remastered for this set by Jaime Gomez Arellano at Orgone Studios.

Also contained in the set is a 92-page book written by prolific music journalist, Nick Ruskell, delving into those essential early years of the band, as described by vocalist Nick Holmes & guitarist Gregor Mackintosh with their recollections of their early efforts to put Paradise Lost firmly on the map, as well as additional thoughts from a selection of prominent members of the scene, including Peaceville founder Paul “Hammy” Halmshaw, Barney Greenway of Napalm Death, My Dying Bride’s Aaron Stainthorpe, & also Chris Reifert who himself embarked upon a tour with the Englishmen with Autopsy back in 1990. Furthermore, the book contains an amount of previously unseen photos recovered from the band’s early promo shoots with photographer Porl Medlock.

Nick Holmes comments “Looking at the artwork for ‘The Lost And The Painless’ and remembering those early albums and live shows, It’s amazing to think that ‘Gothic’ was released 30 years ago.

It serves as a very important chapter in the life of the band and conjures a lot of nostalgia from the early 90’s. We lived off crisps, slept in squats, on people’s floors and under vehicles. Cigarettes were £1.50 a packet, Stella Artois beer was still 5.2% proof, and travelling in a Ford Transit van with all the equipment and 10 people sitting on an old mattress was considered normal.

Distant memories aside, it was also a great time for Death Metal music in general, and ‘The Lost And The Painless’ serves as a timely reminder.”

The foreword for ‘The Lost and the Painless’ comes courtesy of long-time appreciator of all things dark & gothic, Dani Filth, vocalist of UK extreme metal masters, Cradle of Filth.

On 26th November, alongside The Lost And The Painless Peaceville will release a limited gold coloured vinyl LP and cassette of the original recording of Gothic to celebrate the 30th anniversary.

THE STONE EYE Reveal New “Aleutian Summer” Music Video & Single

Experimental grunge-rockers THE STONE EYE have revealed a new music video for their latest single “Aleutian Summer“. The video was directed by Stephen Burdick. Watch it right now at this location. “Aleutian Summer” is the third single from the band’s sixth full-length album South Of The Sun following two previous music videos for the singles “Witches & Raptures”, and “Catatonia”. South Of The Sun is scheduled for a worldwide release on October 15, 2021 via Eclipse Records.

“Aleutian Summer was written while we were killing time before a show in D.C. and this song is actually a special moment for the band in my eyes, as it was one of the first times where we truly collaborated on the writing process as a band” says lead vocalist & guitarist Stephen Burdick. “I started playing the riff, our guitarist Christian joined in with his part, and from there the song wrote itself in a matter of about an hour. Lyrically, I tried to paint a picture of a scene that could be found out of “The Shining” by Stephen King… a dark, brooding atmosphere that only releases tension when the song does at the choruses. The title of the song being ‘Aleutian Summer’ draws on that same Shining influence; as being trapped on a seemingly desolate place such as the Aleutian Islands for a period of time could hypothetically lead to the stir-crazy conditions comparable to those that fueled Jack Torrance’s rampage in the novel. Given the almost ‘retro’ theme of the song, we decided on paying homage to the eras of rock before us with a lo-fi, green screen approach to the video. Very minimal, performance shots only. We felt as though the simple approach would convey the meaning of the song better than any alternative. Paranoid by Black Sabbath anyone?”

The new record, titled South of the Sun, is one of those gems that is familiar somehow, yet takes the listener on a journey mapped out in new pathways. The album’s music invokes the spirits of Frank Zappa and Kurt Cobain while applying their influence upon music which easily falls alongside the likes of Queens of the Stone Age and Alice In Chains. Heavy with a layer of glorious weirdness, this album combines a raucous, dirty guitar sound with clever musicianship … vocals that are as hypnotic in harmony as they are diverse in range, and a rhythm section as daring as it is ornate and, at times, funk-a-licious. With thirteen mesmerizing songs altogether, the singles from the album certainly showcase the wide range of influences upon the band’s writing. For the first single “Witches & Raptures“, the band sings about being trapped in the big picture of the world around us and how servants eventually are consumed by their social masters after they have served their purpose. The second single “Catatonia” is more of an exercise in meditative songwriting designed to just lose the listener in the lyrics which represent such philosophical questions such as ‘who’s out there, what’s there?’.  The third single “Aleutian Summer” can be best described as a scene out of The Shining, going stir-crazy because you’re figuratively trapped in the middle of God knows where. They are soulful songs, and in their own way erotic, both perfect for rock, alternative, stoner, and even metal radio playlists as fuzzy stoner sludge wrapped up in a progressive, pop metal take on the rock genre.

NIGHTRAGE Release New Brutal Music & Lyric Video ‘Swallow Me’

NIGHTRAGE are back with a new brutal lyric video for the song ‘Swallow Me‘ that will be on the upcoming album later this year!

‘In 2021, the Greek/Swedish melodic death metal stars Nightrage return with the final part in their trilogy of albums (‘The Venomous‘, ‘Wolf to Man‘) and now complete with their upcoming album ‘Abyss Rising‘. An album that is the band’s vision of mankind living in its own hell – a hell it has created through the destruction of the planet. Inspired in part by Dante’s ‘inferno’, the album explores man’s continual destruction of the world we live in until the abyss opens up to consume all before it. The abyss has risen from the depths, and hell has now turned outside in to be able to rise to earth to claim us. The album captures Nightrage in a spectacular form; incisive, brutal, uncompromising, and unforgettable. Musically the band have embraced a harder, faster, and brutal approach, still rich in melodic intent but characteristically heavy and aggressive. Mixed and mastered by Fredrik Nordstrom at Studio Fredman (Architects, In Flames, Opeth, etc.) ‘Abyss Rising‘ is a formidable sonic masterpiece.

Marios and Dino about the new lyric video:
‘Mine and Magnus Guitar musical chemistry is really obvious here once again, blending a lot of different ideas that comes always from jam sessions, and focused on melody and hooks. We love to mix all these elements and add a lot of drama creating an amalgam of hooky riffs, brutal vocals, guitar harmonies and melodies into our songs, and “Swallow Me” once again is a great example of that! Ronnie talks this time about how our society have lost control and let religion guide us into false beliefs. This song is about religion. How we humans create a false belief in false gods to hide our own evil deeds behind. And religion is like a virus in our minds and in our society that grows bigger and bigger out of our own control.’  // Marios

Well, If anyone asked a Nightrage fan to describe the band with one single word, I am sure he would answer ”MELODY”. The same word describes ‘’Swallow me’’. Melodies blended with Heavy Metal riffs and strong Death Metal elements. It was really fun to record this song, as it’s obviously based on groovy parts and old-school heavy riffing. If you notice, my drum-parts have a really strong bonding with the rhythm guitars and bass. That, of course, was made in purpose, as I feel that with more simplicity on the drums, I am giving more space for the melodies to shine, as it was meant to be.’ // Dino

HELHEIM Reveal New Single ‘Forrang for fiende’ From Upcoming Album

Posted by tarjavirmakari on September 8, 2021
Posted in: Int. News, News. Tagged: Helheim. Leave a comment

On the 29th October, HELHEIM will be back again with “WoduridaR”,  the band’s eleventh full-length album, and one that harks back to the very roots that the band laid down almost 30 years ago. Three decades during  which  HELHEIM have become known as a band that depicts its Norse heritage with an authenticity and integrity that is so often lacking today.

As a taster to an album that is so hotly anticipated, Dark Essence Records have released another single from  “WoduridaR”, this time choosing  the track “Forrang for fiende”, about which the band had this to say:

The lyrics for ” Forrang for fiende” (Precedence for enemy) are more sinister and are spat out in such a way that perfectly illustrates the feelings of  misanthropy towards the human race.  The musical approach is straight forward Helheim with a touch of rock n roll attitude. All garnished with grim verses and monumental choruses.

“Forrang for fiende”, can be streamed or downloaded from a number of services at:
https://darkessencerecords.fanlink.to/Helheim_Forrang_for_fiende

As to the album itself, “WoduridaR”  has allowed HELHEIM to explore further the areas the band found most interesting in their previous two releases, making use of the aggression of  2017’s “LandawarijaR” and expanding the atmosphere and melodies, and the use of clean vocals, found on 2019’s “Rignir”.

The name “WoduridaR” itself is an Old Norse word, which  can be translated as “The Wild Rider”, and lines can be drawn directly between the album’s title to Odin’s many names and meanings.  It is not, however, a concept album, with the tracks being  independent from  each other, and each one free to tell its own story.

It  is, nevertheless, an album that sums of HELHEIM’s legendary career because, running through the whole of “WoduridaR”, fans will recognise elements from all of HELHEIM’s past albums, as the band explains:

With “WoduridaR” we have returned to the harshness and the paradigms of “LandawarijaR”, with explosive,  mid-paced melodies that have an emotive refrain which summons the northern flames. Helheim never falters, Helheim never surrenders.

“WoduridaR”  was recorded by VULTURE INDUSTRIES’ Bjørnar E. Nilsen at Bergen’s Conclave & Earshot Studio.  With artwork by Tom Korsvold, tracklisting for “WoduridaR”  is as follows:

  1. Vilje av stål
  2. Forrang for fiender
  3. WoduridaR
  4. Åndsfilosofen
  5. Ni s soli sot
  6. Litil vis madr
  7. Tankesmed
  8. Det Kommer i Bølger
  9. Hazard (LP & digital only)

Set for release on Dark Essence Records on the 29th October, “WoduridaR”  will be available in CD, Double Silver LP, and Digital formats, and can now be pre-ordered from:
