Heavy Metal Opera SIGNUM DRACONIS Share Video “Whirlwind of Lovers”

Rockshots Records will be releasing on November 12th, 2021, SIGNUM DRACONIS‘ heavy metal opera of Inferno, from The Divine Comedy written by Dante Alighieri.

Featuring 17 songs by the band all sung in English, the double CD album is the first in a triptych of the complete work of Dante’s magnum opus with Purgatory and Paradise to follow, and will also feature duets with selected special guest vocalists, narrations of selected chants, and an orchestral accompaniment by the Bratislava Symphony Orchestra and Choir.

Last month the first single “Gate of Hell (Arrival of Charon)” was shared and today, the band unveils their next track “Whirlwind of Lovers” with a new video in preview to the concept full-length, which can be viewed here:

“We arrived at Chant V of Hell, which for many people is the most beautiful chant of the entire Divine Comedy… Hell reserved for lovers. Dante in this chant invites us to reflect on how a false passion can lead to decadence and that it shouldn’t be confused with true love. Enter the scene our guest star the amazing soprano Ms. Ksenia Glonty who plays the character of ‘Francesca’. It is a theme with a somewhat more commercial style, with a tragic/romantic air in which both its intro and its outro suggest or share an almost gothic style, with an interesting first duel between keyboard and guitar in the solo part.” adds guitarist Oscar Grace.

Signum Draconis takes their name from the medieval knights’ Order of the Dragon, and has opted for a classic 80s-influenced metal sound in homage to the rock and metal icons that inspired them to be musicians, and aim to produce a truly musical, timeless and epic recording that will absorb and reward from repeated and dedicated listening.
Guitarist and composer Oscar Grace reflects on the history of the project:

“The story of Signum Draconis can be said to begin in 2010, after two years crossing what felt like a personal hell, I was sitting in my car gazing at the sky when a message came to me as it were, a vision clear as day: ‘Put The Divine Comedy to music!’ At that moment Signum Draconis was born. I returned home immediately and hunted out an old copy of Dante’s masterpiece I had owned for years and began furiously reading. Two full years of study and research followed, reading and re-reading all three books many times and even traveling to Florence to visit the 13th Century poet’s own house, trying to envisage what it would have been like to be him and the world in which he lived his story.”

It took two years to extract the parts that would form the material for the songs, and a further year working with my good friend Frederick Pollock to compose the lyrics, bringing to each song its own meaning whilst maintaining the thread that binds all the songs together, at all times remaining faithful to the source and paying the utmost respect to the poet Dante with regards to the correct register with perfect meter and rhyme in English.

I believe Dante’s Inferno perfectly suits the musical style of Heavy Metal, but given the epic scale and cultural importance of Dante’s books, I wanted to bring something else to the music, something that lent grandeur and elegance, and to that end, I began to write parts for a symphony orchestra, in an old-fashioned way, with a fountain pen and sheet music and no new technology to guide my hand.”

Overall, this project took four years to compose the music for the band as well as the orchestra and along the way Oscar Grace searched for the companions who would join him on this voyage of grand musical ambitions. The first was Francesco Micieli, the drummer with whom he had already worked on other projects, then Max Morelli to be the voice of the band, and later on, after an arduous search, Oscar Grace found Filippo Martignano for keyboards and Stefano Antonelli on bass.

Once all the compositions were finished the band set about recording in the Domination Studio of San Marino, taking advantage of the experience and professionalism of Simone Mularoni as a sound technician. For the recording of the orchestral parts, Signum Draconis chose to work with the Bratislava Symphony Orchestra, having spoken with the director, David Hernando Rico, who helped them enormously and who showed such enthusiasm for the music and the project overall.

Post-Krautrock Trio PAPIR Share Album Details + Brand New Video

Copenhagen-based psych and melodic krautrock trio PAPIR has revealed the first details about their forthcoming album, aptly-titled “7”, which is slated for a release on January 14, 2022 via Stickman Records.

On their 7th full-length album, the band dials back their fuzz pedals and returns to the heavily atmospheric soundscapes that define much of their recent work. Many aspects of PAPIR’s music seem to have much in common with the sea – be it a willful association by the Danish trio or not. Their output moves in waves, sometimes fierce and blustery, sometimes gentle and calming, but always performed with unforced, organic talent. Over the course of their 7 full-length albums, the band sways between psychedelic guitar meltdowns and long atmospheric passages with grace and ease. “7”, with its blurred aquatic cover artwork is of course no exception to this rule, and the album is comprised of four long songs that return to calming waters after 2021’s heavier Jams.

But give ear, as the band just shared a first single taken from “7”! Watch the new video, created by Søren Bang Clemmensen, for the song “7.2” here:

Album side A is made up entirely of one 20-minute composition that flows seamlessly from the band’s signature melodic kraut-inspired rock into an ebb and flow of gorgeous ambient soundscapes. Guitarist Nicklas Sørensen’s shows a remarkable versatility, conjuring up a variety of sounds with his guitar that seem hardly possible with one instrument. When drummer Christoffer Brøchmann Christensen and bassist Christian Becher Clausen rejoin on side B, three further blissed-out tracks carry the listener away into their own world. If ambient post-krautrock isn’t yet a genre title, PAPIR should certainly be credited with its invention.

Album track listing:
7.1 (part I-III)
7.2
7.3
7.4

Coming out as LP including download card and as CD, the album pre-sale will be available on October 22 at THIS LOCATION!

WEEDPECKER Announce New Album “IV” And Share First Single

The vanguard of the Polish psychedelic heavy rock scene returns with a brand new album! Continuing to defy expectations and challenge what it means to be a “stoner” band, WEEDPECKER have crafted a new masterpiece: Their forthcoming album, entitled  “IV: The Stream Of Forgotten Thoughts”, is set to be released on December 3, 2021 through Stickman Records.

After several fundamental lineup changes in the past years, fans of Weedpecker were left wondering what might become of the band’s newest incarnation. “III”, their last outing from 2018, was the final one with longtime bandmates Bartek Dobry, Robert Kulakowski and Grzegorz Pawlowski (the first of whom is remaining founding member Piotr Dobry’s brother). In 2019, the band gave a very brief glimpse into their new lineup featuring members of Dopelord, Major Kong and Belzebong while on a short tour. The most surprising change was the switch from dual guitars to a full-time keyboardist.

“I think it’s the most refined album in our discography,” says guitarist, vocalist & songwriter Piotr Dobry. “I’ve been asked many times if the album would be like III. Of course not, we don’t want to record albums that would sound the same and I think we’ve already shown it. This album is a natural continuation of our previous albums, I think nobody will doubt they listen to Weedpecker!”

Today, the band has shared a first single taken from “IV”. Dive into Weedpecker‘s enthralling sound universe and listen to “Fire Far Away” right here:

“IV” is a deep, vividly textured psychedelic rock record with tons of layers begging to be picked apart upon multiple spins. Right from its start and driving album opener, it’s immediately evdient the band brings new elements into the mix. Etherial keys and twisting guitar lines meld in harmony, giving way to chunky riffs. The album surprises with mellow psychedelic gems reminiscent of early Tame Impala, blistering Oh Sees-esque rock bursts and of course the trademark melodic heavy riffage. Former co-lead guitarist Bartek has teamed up with the band in the position of engineer and producer, while also lending his arrangement skills. This combination of new input and experimentation has led to the most radical Weedpecker record thus far, a killer album which will doubtless make a late entry for 2021’s album of the year!

“IV: The Stream Of Forgotten Thoughts” will be available on 180gr. transparent yellow LP including download card and on CD, the album pre- sale will start on Friday, October 22, via Stickman Records at THIS LOCATION!

“IV” track listing:

  1. No Heartbeat Collective
  2. Fire Far Away
  3. The Stream Of Forgotten Thoughts
  4. The Trip Treatment
  5. Big Brain Monsters
  6. Endless Extensions of Good Vibrations
  7. Unusual Perceptions
  8. Symbiotic Nova

CYNIC Previews Video for New Song “Sha48* + 6th Dimensional Archetype”

Progressive rock legend CYNIC will be releasing its highly-anticipated new full-length, ‘Ascension Codes,’ on November 26 via Season of Mist! CYNIC is now sharing a preview clip of the upcoming video for the brand new song, “Sha48* + 6th Dimensional Archetype” which is part of a larger film that will be released at a later date. Watch and listen at THIS LOCATION.

Founding member/guitarist Paul Masvidal comments, “Here’s a preview of ‘6th Dimensional Archetype’ from our new album ‘Ascension Codes’—featuring artwork by Robert Venosa and Martina Hoffman. This album and its forthcoming film immerse us in the Starseed’s journey.”

Cynic’s Ascension Codes is a remarkably far-reaching work, and if nothing else, a clear indication that they have landed in a place of mastery. The album, paradoxically, acts as both swan song and rebirth. The band has recently released the mind-bending first single, “Mythical Serpents,” which can be heard at THIS LOCATION. A video for the song will be coming at a later date… stay tuned!

Pre-orders for ‘Ascension Codes’ are now live at the Season of Mist E-Shop, the CYNIC Bandcamp, and official CYNIC shop.

Masvidal recently shared a touching tribute to late bassist Sean Malone, who died on December 7, 2020. To commemorate Malone’s legacy, CYNIC has released a never-before-heard recorded performance of the song “Integral,” in which Malone performs fretless bass.  “Integral” was originally released as a solo guitar and vocal track on Cynic’s ‘Re-Traced’ EP. The emotional tribute can be found at THIS LOCATION.

As an act of support, CYNIC is inviting fans to donate as you wish for the “Integral” song download, which comes with a guitar/bass transcription of the song and an instrumental (no bass mix) to play along with. 50 percent of proceeds will be shared with suicide prevention organizations: To Write Love On Her Arms (TWLOHA) and The Trevor Project. The remaining will go towards funding a documentary about the lives and artistry of Sean Malone and Sean Reinert.

Rising experimental progressive rockers RESTIVE NATION have revealed another slice from their forthcoming self-titled new studio album.

‘Red Mist’ lifts the listener to another dimension with a hypnotic tale of alien abduction in the style of Blur’s ‘Parklife’, complemented with a punchy, spiralling, hypnotic, electronic backdrop. Listen to the track here.

The band says of the track: “Red Mist is a psychedelic twist on electronic rock. Surf rock guitar melodies are infused with industrial pulsing synths that provide an unearthly backdrop for an extraterritorial narrative.”

Check out the video here:

This is one of the most experimental tracks on the album which gives the full detailed account of a confused man’s story on how he was abducted by aliens. The storyline was inspired by a book called ‘Omens of Awareness’. It described many UFO abduction scenarios and led to writing a personal take on it.”

Watch ‘Act III’ official video here.
Watch ‘Revolt/Reanimate’ here.

Restive Nation are a Dublin-based progressive Rock/Electronic project that expands and pushes the elements of creativity using a wide spectrum of influences from NIN to Massive Attack, Jamie Lenman, Tool, Deftones, Mastodon, A Perfect Circle, Danny Elfman, and beyond.

Their self-titled new album is due for release early 2022. Find out more on Restive Nation via www.restivenation.com.
