London based metallers JASON PAYNE & THE BLACK LEATHER RIDERS will release their debut EP ‘The Abyss’ on July 16th. Today the band has unleashed their new single for ‘The Purge‘, available now on all streaming platforms.

Jason Payne on ‘The Purge’:
“Very proud and excited to release our new single “The Purge”. It’s a song that talks about feeling stuck in your own prison and then you fight your own demons and you set yourself free from the pain. It was inspired by a personal chapter in my life and with the ideology of cleansing yourself from the sins and mistakes you did in the past. It’s about forgiving yourself and move on.
A powerful, upbeat, riff-driven, sing-along new single in support of my upcoming EP, with a music video shot in the legendary Camden Town venue ‘The Underworld’ to accompany.”

Jason Payne on ‘The Abyss’ EP and coverart:
“Writing this EP was a sensational experience for me. Lyrics are very personal and me and the guys put our hearts and soul in making this. It’s the most powerful, boldest and heaviest work we’ve ever done so far. I believe this sets new standards for our future works and I couldn’t be prouder of what we achieved by creating such a unique work of art.
We named it the Abyss due to the dark period of time we’ve been going through, due to the pandemic. However, by diving into an abyss, for us, it doesn’t necessarily mean to hit the ground and die, but to be reborn. If we learn something from life is that every time we have to face a hard path, we have to find a way of overcoming those obstacles. These tracks are full of rage, insanity and introspective moods.
Fall into the glooms of darkness with us. Launch date: 16th July 2021.”

‘The Abyss’ EP Tracklist:

  1. The Dark (feat. Daisy Pepper)
  2. Breathing Rage (feat. Andy Martongelli)
  3. The Purge
  4. Vicious
  5. Lost
  6. Thoughtless

Earlier Jason revealed of their upcoming 6-tracks EP “The Abyss”:
“The Dark is a song that sums up the theme of this EP, “The Abyss”. It’s about death, obscurity and the “nothing”. It talks of things like trying to reach to the void, feeling confused and betrayed, and about a person that’s losing his essence. Without a consciousness, and with no purpose in our lives, we’re just a bunch of roamers taking a road to the abyss, and that leads us to the dark and lashes us to insignificant beings floating in “the nothing”.
When I was writing this EP, I got affected by the outside world. It’s a dark period that we’re living. I caught the essence and the feelings that this time put me through and made a whole EP about existentialism and nihilism. This period made me question who am I, what’s my purpose, what have I done with my life and what if this all ends now? Would it matter? Do we matter? Does life matters? Of course, it does! In my opinion, there’s no point of doing anything or living if this doesn’t matter. However, when I wrote this EP, I don’t give you the bright side of the story. That’s for the fans to find out. My whole point with this work is to make people question their lives and feel these emotions. This record means so much to me, since it’s about everything I felt and still feel. I’m a person who never stops asking questions. I always want to know more. Specially, when it comes to existentialism, I’m always in internal conflict, since I question everything. This is my message, this is my music and it’s about how I feel, and hopefully, people will relate to it.”

“Overactive Imagination” line-up:
Violin – Jacopo Ogliari
Cello – Aurelio Pizzuto
Double Bass – Steve Di Giorgio

INTERLUDIO DUO stated on the collaboration with Steve and how it all started:
“INTERLUDIO DUO is a String Band that would like to propose both their Post-Modern original tracks along with their own Rock and Metal Masterpiece arrangements. Jacopo (violin) and Aurelio (cello) have always played classical and modern music in various formations and with different instruments. The idea of arranging “Overactive Imagination” track by Death comes from Aurelio’s desire to arrange a Death Metal Masterpiece for the duo. Both the Violinist and the Cellist loved and played Death Metal, and they well know the history of that genre. So they began with one of the best DM album ever: “Individual Thought Patterns”.”

“In the meantime Aurelio got in touch with Steve Di Giorgio to talk about some bass parts related to Death. Soon Steve understood that Interludio Duo wanted to do things seriously. He literally threw himself into the production saying he wanted to make a trio in the recording of “Overactive Imagination”. It was the beginning of a collaboration and friendship with a great artist, with THE Metal Bass Legend. The Production, led by Stefano Pavoni, has put in place all the necessary forces to manage audio and video recordings from around the world. Video editing was wisely performed by Marco Bergamini. Interludio is working at the moment on writing new arrangements and songs. Many SDG fans and ID fans asked us for new tracks and soon they will be satisfied with a new ambitious project.”

BLUE OYSTER CULT Co-Founders Clarify Who Played the Cowbell on ‘Don’t Fear The Reaper’

For The Metal Voice, Kenny Kessel was on location at St-Paul’s Church in South Salem, New York where the famous Blue Oyster Cult Album Live album cover was taken (On your Feet or on your knees) and interviewed Blue Oyster Cult co-founders brothers Albert and Joe Bouchard. The two founding members talk about the backstory behind the live album cover, Cowbells, their time in Blue Oyster Cult and their work post Blue Oyster Cult.

When the two were asked who really played the Cowbells in the studio on the BOC classic ‘Don’t fear the Reaper’ Joe Bouchard replied, “this is the guy who actually played the Cowbell in the studio (pointing to Albert), there have been a lot of rumours over the years, that maybe it wasn’t Albert.” Albert Bouchard continued,” David Lucas (Producer) played Cowbell on the song Tenderloin (not Don’t Fear the Reaper)  he came in (the studio) and played it (Tenderloin) when nobody was there . Then I came in the next day and said this is what I did and I said Dave, that’s great again this is before we put the cowbell on Reaper. The confusion was afterwards David Lucas said I know I played Reaper after nobody was there. I was like no, that is the wrong song, that is ‘Tenderloin’, which is the first one that had a Cowbell.”

On Your Feet or on Your Knees is the first live album by American rock band Blue Öyster Cult, released by Columbia Records on February 27, 1975. The album features three songs from each of the band’s first three studio albums, two covers (“I Ain’t Got You”, albeit with modified lyrics, and “Born to Be Wild”), and one (“Buck’s Boogie”) original instrumental that remains a staple of the band’s live shows to this day. The 12 songs include performances at the Academy of Music in New York City, the Paramount Theatre in Portland, the Paramount Theatre in Seattle, the Show Palace in Phoenix, the Long Beach Arena, the P.N.E. Coliseum in Vancouver and the Capitol Theatre in New Jersey, though it is not clear which songs came from which venues and on what dates.
The album reached No. 22 on the Billboard 200, in so doing becoming the band’s highest-charting album in the United States.

In 1981, Albert Bouchard left Blue Öyster Cult. He began to work on an intended solo album that would become the Imaginos (1988) released under the BÖC name. Albert Bouchard  released in 6 November 2020 titled Re Imaginos

Joe Bouchard is a co-founder of the world-famous band BLUE ÖYSTER CULT.  In the 70s and 80s he played, sang, recorded and wrote songs with BÖC for Columbia Records. He retired from Blue Öyster Cult in 1986

“Astronomy” is a song by rock band Blue Öyster Cult written by the Bouchard Brothers and Sandy Pearlman.  It was first released on their 1974 album Secret Treaties. Their second live album, Some Enchanted Evening, included a version with an extended guitar solo and a third version was included on the Imaginos album. It was also re-recorded for the band’s Cult Classic collection in connection with the TV miniseries of Stephen King’s The Stand. Most recently Metallica did a cover of the song for their 1998 Garage Inc. album.
