CASSIUS KING To Release “Field Trip” Album on July 23rd, Reveal Notes on Cover Art Concept

CASSIUS KING, led by guitarist Dan Lorenzo (Hades, Non-Fiction, Vessel Of Light) with Dangerous Toys/Broken Teeth vocalist Jason McMaster, will release their debut album “Field Trip” on July 23rd via Nomad Eel Records. Today the band reveals notes on cover art concept, read below.

When writing lyrics for the music given, it is normal for the full vision , or concept, of the cover art to come into play much later, and sometimes can even feel forced when given a deadline.

Sometimes, the band name can help conjure the art and where it can go. That was not the case with Cassius King when hearing the song’s pre vocal/lyric idea in rough song form.

…it started with a sort of doom sound. That is my opinion. Some might argue that CK is not really true doom metal. It has that feel here and there and continue ]s to get comparisons to the band, “Trouble”, and the like. So, the “Sabbath” sound seems to come though, influencing my pen, to write of dark shades, and night time minded wanderings. Blame it on the riffs, is what I say.

One of the earlier lyrics I wrote for this, was the song that ended up being called “Leave of Absence”, telling the loose story of being a subject in a mental institution, or in a memory care facility. It automatically brings up memories, personally, as well as from other art, books and movies. Maybe not limited to “One flew Over the Cuckoo’s nest”, but, yes…
I talk of getting lost ,and actually sing of “dancing in the field, until the doctors find you”, non specific as a metaphor that can be used, and ends up making sense when you hear the lyric “your white gown blows up high, above your head”. The guys in white scrubs and sneakers in a sort of search and rescue coming to get you to take you back to the looney bin, after you have conveniently, and somewhat harmlessly escaped. I need to mention, the sort of mind altering medications one might be prescribed after they diagnose you as, well,“ crazy”?… crazy because you talk to imaginary beings that might not, or might actually exist, being the reason you have been told that you are… “crazy”. Even if… these things/beings you see, are your friends, and make you smile, and have docile moments throughout the day. The medications rob you of all of this. I feel I should mention here, to be fair, I have written about this subject matter before. A darker twist on the same thing, on an Ignitor song called, “the Golden Age of Black Magick”. It sings/talks about how the medications are not letting you see/feel the things that might be helping you and your health, in some way, even if they go against common beliefs the doctors and administrations consider archaic, or bad for the media.

As I write the lyrics for “Leave of Absence”,  I actually do not have a title before I pen the lines leading up to the final map of the lyric idea. I have a breakdown line that says “just another field trip”. I start out by calling the song “Field Trip”. I finish the song, the lyrics, and I send it to Dan (Lorenzo). Dan is so happy that the songs are coming to life, he pays no mind to where i am going with this. Then, almost on an indecisive dime, I spin and start to think that the title is weak..( Writers doubt themselves often, which is why I don’t think I will ever finish my book). I changed the title to “Leave of Absence”. I inform Dan. No push back at all.

Jimmy (bassist James Schulman) and I started to collaborate on lyrical ideas. Between Jimmy, Dan and myself, we start thinking of what title of the record could/should be. We have half the record written at this point, when Jimmy, not knowing anything about the title change, pipes in and says “How about we call the record “Field Trip”.  pretty strange, and maybe not strange at all.

Fast forward, we start to conceptualize the content of the song we took the title from. Jimmy really shines in this moment by submitting asylum room photos, that are truly disgusting, but very much art. I throw the idea of the escaped looney on the trail with his imaginary friends, that only he can see, or thinks are real. Rough ideas take shape. I photoshop the roughs and send them to the band. They think the cover art could be actually finished before the record is. I tell them to pump the breaks and insist we need a real artist to take this to another level.

Enter Claudio Bergamin. the artist known for the cover art for Judas Priest’s “Firepower”.
I met Claudio in Portland, OR. some years ago at a heavy metal convention. He was super cool, and we chatted about nothing and everything in a few minutes. He gave me his card and told me to contact him if I ever needed art.

What you see on the cover, front and back, are photos taken by Claudio, and manipulated into the concept and vision. It all came from an honest place. Some of it originates from time spent with my mother in a memory care facility, and meeting other patients and doctors. I learned a lot. As you can imagine, or have had the same experiences.
Jason McMaster

CASSIUS KING’s Field Trip is out on July 23rd on Nomad Eel Records.

„Europe, we will hit the road in November and December presenting our brand new album ‘A Valediction’! We celebrate the release of our sixth full-length album with an extensive setlist, a major stage production and exceptional lineup. Join us in this new chapter, reserve your tickets and don’t miss out on the tour of the year!”, states OBSCURA‘s frontman Steffen Kummerer.

“Since the first time we met OBSCURA at UK Tech Fest years ago, there’s been a great relationship between both bands! When the chance to join forces on a tour happened, we knew we had to jump in. OBSCURA is a big reference when it comes to technical death metal and we think that this tour package, combined with the release of new music from both bands, will offer an intense and diverse musical landscape at every show. We are so excited to get back on the road with such an amazing band”, adds PERSEFONE.

“DISILLUSION” is very excited to be touring Europe with the fabulous OBSCURA and PERSEFONE at the end of the year! After the long break due to the pandemic, it feels great to get back on stage and feel the vibe of the live atmosphere. Above all, we are tremendously happy that many of our fans will experience their first DISILLUSION live concert, as we are visiting many countries for the first time. Twenty years active; six highly prized albums; over 600 shows on four continents. “A Valediction” finds OBSCURA turning the page to a new chapter in the band’s evolution. A year in the works, the songwriting sessions followed a new approach, where the framework was relaxed, allowing new inspirations, imagining, and opportunities to arise. Songs like the opening epic ‘Forsaken,’ the ’80s-tinted ‘When Stars Collide’ (featuring Soilwork/The Night Flight Orchestra frontman Björn Strid), the brutal groove of ‘Devoured Usurper,’ the ethereal artistry of ‘Heritage,’ and the fleet-fingered title track benefitted compositionally (refined structures) and aesthetically (more dynamism) from OBSCURA’s restyled songwriting stratagem.

In 2021, the group continue to be a beacon for change. No doubt OBSCURA’s new stats will amaze, but what they’re focused on is the release of “A Valediction” and then taking it on the road. Several high-caliber tours of Europe, North America, and Asia are planned through to 2023, with routes are in the works for the band to visit Australia, South America, and beyond. Truly, there is no band quite like OBSCURA. “A Valediction” proves that persistence, perseverance, and enterprising minds can achieve anything. Welcome to the next level!

CONJURER Re-Release Music Video For Single “Choke”

Posted by tarjavirmakari on June 26, 2021
Posted in: Int. News, News. Tagged: Conjurer. Leave a comment

Following a spectacular and long overdue return to the live stage at the Download Festival Pilot last weekend, sludgy UK post-metal heavyweights CONJURER are inviting you to check out the video for “Choke,” the relentless opening track of their last full length album “Mire” (2018). Effortlessly switching from sludge to metallic hardcore, and from progressive post metal to post black metal, this song not only demonstates the musical proficiency of this young band, it also proves that they can’t be pigeonholed no matter how hard you try.

CONJURER’s Conor Marshall (bass) comments:
“’Choke’ has become a bit of a fan favourite over the past few years since ‘Mire’ was released and it’s one of ours too. I think the general consensus within the band is still that ‘Choke’ is the “best” Conjurer song that’s been released so far and showcases a lot of what we do. The video loosely follows the lyrical theme of the song, which looks at the way things like “fame” and pressure from society, the industry and the gutter press can affect artists and celebrities. The idea being that the shots of the band in a white room, dressed in suits represents someone being dressed up and pushed out to perform despite them clearly not being in the best state, and them then starting to deteriorate, and the dark, more aggressive shots representing the inner turmoil and struggle.”

CONJURER’s still untitled second full-length and follow-up to their critically acclaimed 2018 debut album “Mire” is set to be released in the not too distant future. Stay tuned!

In the meantime you can watch a video for the song “The Mire” and stream the band’s first two previous releases here: http://nblast.de/Conjurer-Catalogue

WHITE VOID Release ‘GosT Remix’ For Song “Where You Go, You’ll Bring Nothing”

Today, eclectic Norwegian hard rock band WHITE VOID around Lars Nedland is proud to release the first entry in a series of remixes for its much lauded debut album, Anti, which was released on March 12, 2021.

None other than acclaimed dark synthwave artist GosT took the WHITE VOID song “Where You Go, You’ll Bring Nothing” and laid bare its 80s electro wave potential, focusing on the track’s dreamy and elegiac side at first, but glancing at the dancefloor towards the end.

Lars Nedland comments:
“Darkness and gloom come in many forms, and I’ve always been a fan of the tinted melancholy of GosT.
It was pretty evident that the gritty neon of White Void and the darkness of GosT would be a great match, and the result is a haunting remix of “Where You Go You’ll Bring Nothing”.
It’s a melancholic piece given new vigour and potency by the riveting soundscapes of GosT and by James’ curious capacity for melodic deconstruction.
Picture the undead dancing in the neon lights of the city. This is the sound of a night glowing in colourful gloom.”

GosT adds:
“The vocal performance on this track alone was very inspiring to work with. I really enjoy remixing songs from genres other than electronic as a sort of challenge. The build of this song throughout, along with the transitions, made for an extremely entertaining remix process.”

GENTLE SAVAGE released their debut album “Midnight Waylay” on June 17th via Bandcamp. Today the band announces their new single ‘Personal Hades‘, coming out on July 2nd on all the major streaming platforms. See the stunning single artwork below.

Lead vocalist Tornado on ‘Personal Hades’:
“If the King of Hades would start playing electric guitar riffing out and torturing souls, it might sound something like this… Personal Hades is a story about mental and spiritual suffering. No help at sight, the narrator walks through the lands of Hades and cries for a rescue. Hades is used as a metaphor for the mindscape that exists inside a persons head when he/she is facing deep desperation at it’s worst.”

Tornado on “Midnight Waylay” album: “Midnight Waylay depicts a ‘taking it easy in the daytime, turning into a beast at night’ kind of lifestyle. Just like a hunter strikes from the shadows, ruthless and silent, these songs can without warning rock your world. As a concept the album Midnight Waylay is best appreciated when served whole, but each song has its own character and works well independently. Find your own adventure, let yourself loose!”

“Midnight Waylay” Track List:

  1. Karelian Magic 4.15
  2. Personal Hades 3.58
  3. YNAMW 3.56
    (You Never ask Me Why)
  4. Into The Abyss 5.18
  5. Honey Bunny 3.10
  6. After All 4.25
  7. Run Run Poor Boy 4.53
  8. Livin’ It Up 4.42
  9. Carry The Fire 4.33

Tornado stated on the album coverart:
“TWO SIDES TO EVERY STORY
Isn’t it strange that when you get something really big done you are at the same time relieved and a bit confused?! That’s how it feels like right now.
Our debut album is ready for release, coming out on June 17th via our Bandcamp page, and now we are proud to reveal the MIDNIGHT WAYLAY album cover to the world.
The cover art was created by our friend, graphic art wizard Vin Valentino. Vin and vocalist Tornado created the Midnight Waylay world based on Tornado’s visions of a Rock Band descending down to earth using a ‘stairway to heaven’. That’s Tornado’s way of showing his gratitude to the old great ones who showed the Rock’n Roll way for latter generations to roll. “
