Brazilian Heavy/Thrash Metallers, appropriately called Neo-Thrashers, of VALVERA have launched their fantastic and scary new music video for its song “The Damn Colony” on the band’s official Youtube channel. This frightener video reachead the incredible milestone of over 10.000 views and it keeps increasing day by day!
“We are very happy with all the repercussion of the video, since we knew from the beginning that we had an excellent script, a brilliant technical team and actors guiding us. Thank you very much to everyone who watched, liked, commented and mainly subscribed to our channel, because that positive energy is what feeds us”, commented Glauber Barreto
“The Damn Colony”, a track featured in the band’s acclaimed and praised work, “Cycle Of Disaster”, which had its video pre-released two days earlier in partnership with Metal Hammer Portugal, is a track based on the horrendous history of Hospital Colonia Barbacena, in Minas Gerais. Founded in 1903 and with a capacity of 200 beds, the hospital had an average of 5,000 thousand patients in 1961 and became known for the mass genocide that occurred especially between the 60s and 80s. Trains with full wagons (called “crazy trains”), similar to those in German concentration camps, dumped” human waste “for” treatment “at the hospital daily.

“It is a really horrendous, sinister and even unbelievable history to believe in. In this hospital, people’s clothes were stripped, their hair shaved and their names erased. Naked in body and identity, kidnapped humanity, men, women and even children ate rats and feces, drank sewage or urine, slept on grass, were beaten and raped to death” commented Gabriel Prado.
It is estimated that about 70% of the inmates had no diagnosis of mental illness. The hospital was intended to contain the undesirable, with the function of cleaning and sanitation in the locality, in the words, “unpleasant and uncomfortable people” for someone with more power, such as political opponents, prostitutes, homosexuals, beggars, people without documents, epileptics , alcoholics, pregnant girls and raped by their bosses, wives confined so that the husband could live with his mistress, daughters of farmers who lost their virginity before marriage, among other marginalized groups in society.
“The Colonia Hospital’s patients died of cold, hunger, disease. They also died of electroshock. In a few days, the electroshocks were so many and so strong that the overload knocked down the city’s network. In periods of greater capacity, 16 people died each between 1969 and 1980, more than 1,800 bodies of patients were sold to 17 medical colleges in the country, without anyone questioning. When there was an excess of corpses and the market shrank, the bodies began to to be decomposed in acid, in the Colonia Hospital, in front of the patients still alive, so that the bones could be commercialized”, commented Rodrigo Torres.
The Italian psychiatrist Franco Basaglia, a pioneer in the anti-asylum struggle in Italy, was in Brazil and met Colonia in 1979. At the time, he called a press conference and vented: “I was in a Nazi concentration camp today. Nowhere in the world, I witnessed a tragedy like that.”
“The exorbitant and silenced numbers (for more than 50 years) of summary, cold and violent executions that took place at the Colonia de Barbacena hospital far outweigh the deaths registered and hidden in the Brazilian military dictatorship (among Indians, peasants, persecuted politicians, etc. They surpass even the numbers of the bloodiest dictatorships in Latin America, Chile with more than 40 thousand and Argentina with more than 30 thousand dead”, commented Glauber Barreto.
“As artists that we are, we have an obligation to speak, to be the voice of the people, to bring questions and answers so that things like this never happen again”, concluded Leandro Peixoto.

Tracklist: Behind the Veil Trepidation Until Lambs Become Lions Under New Kingdoms
“Behind the Veil” is a true working class anthem. The story is universal – selling one’s own mind and soul just to make enough to get by. Giving your all every day only to receive a tip of the hat in return. Father Before Me reminds us that “your mind’s not for auction, your soul’s not for sale.” Feeling under appreciated and taken advantage of, but your worth can’t be measured. The accompanying music video is an animated feat – a first for a Father Before Me video – exploding in colors and mind-bending imagery that bring the lyrics alive.
The EP takes a darker turn with the second number, “Trepidation.” Songwriter Elijah Catrone channeled his mental health experience into “Trepidation” by personifying his depression and anxiety as a monster from a horror movie.
“Until Lambs Become Lions” kicks off with a guitar shred reminiscent of a fire at the core of the EP’s namesake Ruby. The lead single, “Lambs” explodes with the high energy needed to face any challenge. Much like the city skyline from the cover art, life can also take the shape of a treacherous steep climb. But as the lyrics say, “the choice is ours alone” – keep climbing and you can face the impossible.
Closing out the EP, as if facing the aftermath of a city earlier destroyed, is “Under New Kingdoms.” The piece starts off with brooding lyrical imagery like a vision of smoke and red flowers and proceeds to showcase singer Catrone’s melodic vocals laid on top of a driving mix of half-time and double-time rhythms. Father Before Me closes out the EP by leaving the listener a tad bittersweet, but always hopeful.
The EP cover continues the collaboration between Father Before Me and Capstan Designs. The artwork suggests New York City under a chaotic fire, with words of negativity sprinkled throughout the buildings. Yet, looking closer, you see a small message of “Hope” written on the Statue of Liberty’s arm as she prepares herself for battling the odds.
The EP is self-released by independent artist Father Before Me. Songs were mixed and mastered by genre veterans Grant McFarland and Carson Slovak at Atrium Audio (August Burns Red, Carousel Kings). The animated music video was animated by Taylor Bowen of Hausriot Studios.
[“This EP was a reflection of the climb and the tribulations I’ve faced in the last few years. It is a testament of survival in environments where you seem doomed to fail but still finding the power to persevere through even the darkest of times” – Elijah Catrone]

Saudi Arabia’s WASTED LAND have a new single coming out entitled “Fade Away”, this is following their self-titled 2013 album. Since that full-length, the band suggests that they have evolved over time from being melody and folk focused into something heavier, but still having a strong melodic base.
“Fade Away” has been in the works since 2017, and will be the first music video from the band, which can be viewed below.
Lyrically, the single talks about someone having severe depression and comparing his journey in life to that of a candle, getting shorter and shorter until it eventually burns out. Then he finds his soul’s salvation after his death. Musically, it starts with heavy doses of melody which are complimented by heavy riffs and even more melodies. To contribute to the theme of depression and life’s waning, it carries a somber and melancholic tune near the end. The band comments on the track:
“It’ll be a new mixture from our old folkish style with more heavy catchy riffs and chorus. We hope we can catch the attention from the old fans and attract new ones.”
For Wasted Land, they compose the music first and then create lyrics that fit. For this song in particular guitarist Ayman composed the lyrics a long time ago for his previous band Banj. Writing for the band is a joint endeavour between guitarists Ayman and Ahmed whenever they jam together. Vocalist Emad adds his flavours in the lyrics and of course the vocal lines.
Wasted Land originally formed in 2005 to participate in Metal II gig in Dammam. Ahmed and Ayman were jamming together and felt there was chemistry between them while composing folky melodic death metal. From there they decided to add more members to create a full band. They were one of the first Saudi metal bands to get massive media exposure from outlets like CNN, BBC radio and other local and international newspapers.
Recommended for fans of In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, and Suidakra.
“Fade Away” is available for stream and download via Saudi Arabian based label Wall of Sound Records.
London based Trap Metal artist MIMI BARKS has released a new single/video ‘Grind’, the 6th single of the upcoming album DEADGIRL.
MIMI BARKS comments:
“Can’t nurture a seed without water and warmth, can’t fix someone when you’re broken inside, push down to feel superior, watched the spark ignite the fire and turn to ash, and it’s too late to realise that you can’t love anybody when you despise yourself”
If Trap Metal came screaming out of the digital womb, a sonic playa hater wired to disrupt the code of those who came before, then the likes of MIMI BARKS are the future of the glitchy genre. Her “from-the-heart-guts-n-soul” smash of trap beats and raspy, pissed-off vocals has been self-christened: “DOOM TRAP” and the name fits. It’s the bitter pill the former Berliner-now-relocated-to-London intends to smear all over the genre in a way that’s punk-as-fuck and louder-than-hell. This is the sound of music eating its young. Imagine Hip Hop word fire, electronic beats and slashing guitars chewed up and spat out by Trap’s chopped beats, distorted basslines and general weirdness.
