Filmmaker + Godfather of Finnish Heavy Metal KIMMO KUUSNIEMI Talks About SARCOFAGUS, His New Project ANCIENT STREAMING ASSEMBLY + Many More

Just recently Luxi Lahtinen from The Metal Crypt conducted an in-depth interview with the Finnish Filmmaker + Godfather of Finnish Heavy Metal KIMMO KUUSNIEMI, talking about Sarcofagus, Kimmo’s new project Ancient Streaming Assembly, revealing the first-ever time many interesting details. Among other topics, Kimmo and Luxi talked about the current world situation and how and why Kimmo’s new Split Screen Management got started.

“Kimmo Kuusniemi, who’s always been the heart and soul of the band, is far from being completely retired from making new music. In fact, as it is said when one thing comes to an end, often it’s the start of something new.”

Read below some excerpts of the interview:

“Time to change course and listen to my inner voice. This new project has been on my mind for a long time and now it has been my main project for the past year.”

“One thing people don’t really know is that heavy metal is just part of my musical background. I also listen to progressive, jazz, experimental music. All kinds of things that are already in Sarcofagus but also still very strongly present in me.”

“The new project I’m working on now has no lyrics at all. The main idea is that the vocals are used as an instrument. There are messages, but they are in the songs and in the videos and in the atmospheric things that we have made. That’s the thing. The new project is going back to the old sagas and the stories from the past. Yes, it’s different. I’m trying to tell the stories with the music, not the lyrics, so that’s kind of different.”

“One of the greatest compliments for an artist is that you have created something that you will be remembered for. I am actually very honored to be called the Godfather of Finnish Metal. Yeah! I think that is super cool!”

“The project Ancient Streaming Assembly (ASA)… is a collective cross-arts project. The idea of cross-arts is understood only from the very piece of art itself as it comes to life. It is defined by the moment artists in collaboration cross their own discipline borders to make art that is vibrant, alive, and speaks to an audience, small or large. ASA is unravelling the ancient myths and legends of the world. These epic stories were songs first, so the music has always played a fundamental part in them.”

Talking about Split Screen Management…
“The music business is full of crooks so what we are trying to do is to create a fair and just service that will help bands to prosper. All of us have a very long history of working in the entertainment business. So, besides the general management, we can help bands to avoid repeating the same old mistakes.”

“COVID-19 has been just horrendous for everyone and especially bad for the entertainment industry. A bad thing can also be a good thing.”

“The bad thing was that COVID-19 ruined everything I had been working for. The good thing was that it made me rethink my life and as a result I now have a new music project well underway, and I met great people to start up a management business.”

“I hope that other people might also be looking at their lives to re-evaluate what is actually important.”

FORE Release Video For New Single “Repeated Subtraction”

We live in a world filled with metal bands, so enter: FORE.  Formed last spring and featuring current and former members of KREATOR, VENOM INC, INHUMAN CONDITION, OLD JAMES, and THE ABSENCE, the quartet self-released their first album “Hombres” in August of 2020.  The band’s 12-song, 22-minute debut album brought back the sounds of 80s/early 90s hardcore, nodding to bands like Bad Religion, The Offspring, NOFX, and Pennywise in 12 songs, totalling 22 minutes.

Today, the band releases a brand new song called “Repeated Subtraction”, with an accompanying music video, which can be viewed below.  The video was filmed, directed and edited by Matthias Kollek at Vault Video, with additional footage filmed by Jeramie & Deidra Kling.

“We are so excited to begin the second chapter in FORE’s history!  This tune gets pretty vicious, but it has an insanely catchy, and soothing vocal done by the ever-talented Brian “The Canadian Glenn Hughes” Stephenson!  He wrote some killer/clever lyrics, which are super relevant to today’s bizarre world we live in, and Matthias killed it on the visual end of things!” guitarist Nordberg said.

Rutan comments, “The day is finally upon us for the release of the first ever Official Hate Eternal Guitar Tab Book entitled Hate Eternal ‘Best Of Vol I’ on Sheet Happens Publishing. I am absolutely ecstatic to release this into the universe! With the guidance of Luke Hoskin and everyone at the fantastic Sheet Happens Publishing, along with the tremendous help of the super talented Evan Bradley working with me and transcribing, we have put together this fabulous book that comes in multiple formats. This will enable and allow guitarists to be able to fully grasp and learn Hate Eternal riffs and songs the way they were written and intended to be played.”

He adds, “Having recorded seven studio albums with Hate Eternal thus far it was quite a challenge to choose 10 songs for this first book and achieve. I really wanted it to cover a lot of our catalog as well as songs that really encompass my playing and composing style as a rhythm and lead guitarist and songwriter. These 10 songs represent a lot of the creative feel and unique style and techniques that have been crafted for well over 30 years. I look forward to doing more tablature books in the future to cover even more of the Hate Eternal landscape.”

“I am so thankful to everyone who is and has been a part of Hate Eternal and grateful to all the people who have helped, contributed and supported us to become what we are today. I could not be more excited to know for the first time ever, people truly will have a unique insight into the complexities, the range and depth of emotion and insanity of what is the musical legacy of Hate Eternal. Gratitude!”

Following their critically acclaimed “The Dawn Of Vitriol” EP (2020), MERCURY CIRCLE have shared a brand new song from their upcoming and highly anticipated debut album, “Killing Moons”, which is slated for release on October 8, 2021 via Noble Demon!

Born as a brainchild in 2018 by ICONCRASH‘s and SWALLOW THE SUN’s Jaani Peuhu, and featuring members of CHILDREN OF BODOM, SLEEP OF MONSTERS & more, MERCURY CIRCLE create a diverse blend of dark rock infused with electrifying synth wave and slow, epic doom. On their upcoming full-length album, MERCURY CIRCLE unleash ten enthralling tracks, which differ wildly in expression and sonic aesthetics. “Killing Moons” is a deeply powerful and majestic piece of music – truly representing a genre of its own – and one that will take the listener on an all-absorbing trip into yet unimaginable spheres.

After the previously released first single, “You Open Up The Earth”, MERCURY CIRCLE have shared a brand new video clip for the goth rock opus “Black Mirrors“ today! Watch the video here:

“John Dee (13 July 1527 – 1608 or 1609) was an Anglo-Welsh mathematician, astronomer, astrologer, teacher, occultist, and alchemist. He was the court astronomer for, and advisor to, Elizabeth I, and spent much of his time on alchemy, divination and Hermetic philosophy,” band mastermind Jaani Peuhu reveals. “The lyrics for Black Mirrors are a mixture of matters of the heart and occultism. In the beginning we hear a prophecy from Nostradamus before plunging into a dark and delusional world – a place for the abandoned heart, where light is reflected from John Dee’s black mirror. Musically it’s more in vein of goth rock than doom metal. When writing the song I envisioned how Queen with a goth rock twist would sound. I’m a fan of big choruses and 80’s goth beats. Add a little bit of spiderwebs and whispers in French and you’re good to go!“

Tracklist:

  1. The Gates Wide Open
  2. Black Mirrors
  3. You Open Up The Earth
  4. Killing Moons
  5. Seven Archangels
  6. Call On The Dark
  7. Avalanche
  8. An Arrow
  9. Like Matches
  10. Death Poem

“Killing Moons” will be coming out on October 8th through Noble Demon and is now available for pre-order HERE

MORDRED Release New Video ‘Malignancy’

Genre breaking San Francisco groove/funk thrashers MORDRED release their first new full length album, ‘The Dark Parade’, in over 25 years, and it’s every bit as good as expected from this unique band.

Set to be released by M-Theory Audio on July 23rd, the record – which will be offered on CD, digital, cassette, blue vinyl with orange splatter and a limited-edition, mail-order exclusive white vinyl variant – can be pre-ordered now at smarturl.com/mordred

Check out the new video for Malignancy here:

Outside of their 2015 single “The Baroness,” “Volition” – which is available for purchase at https://m-theoryaudio.com/store  – marked the first new MORDRED music since the band’s 2013 reunion. The four songs on that effort saw the group return to the scene with a revitalized energy and successfully recapture their classic sound, which is rooted in thrash metal but veers off the straightforward path for more adventurous musical explorations by utilizing funk-infused musicianship and hip-hop influences. “The Dark Parade” is the continuation of the aural momentum that MORDRED regained on “Volition” and showcases a band that sounds as fresh now as they did during their initial decade of existence.

MORDRED was formed in 1984 as the burgeoning Bay Area thrash scene was beginning its rise to global prominence. While mosh-inducing thrash formed the basic blueprint of their sound, MORDRED stood out as a unique presence thanks to their integration of alternative and hip-hop influences. The group was one of the first Bay Area bands to explore those diversities in extremes, but as the dexterous bass performance of Art Liboon and innovative turntable work from band collaborator Aaron “DJ Pause” Vaughn provided a new spin on the thrash metal genre, MORDRED retained their metallic bark thanks to groove-laden shred from guitarists Danny White and James Sanguinetti and energetic shout-along choruses spearheaded by vocalist Scott Holderby. That combination of thrash metal and exploratory funk powered three full-lengths and an EP on Noise Records between 1989 and 1994: their revered debut “Fool’s Game”; their eclectic sophomore follow-up “In This Life”; the “Vision” EP and their final – until now – record, “The Next Room.”

In addition to spending their 2020 releasing “Volition” and putting the finishing touches on “The Dark Parade,” MORDRED also entertained audiences throughout the year with their streaming variety show and concert series, “MORDRED: Acting The Fool!” Episodes from the series, which includes live performances by the band, guest appearances, burlesque performances, along with a healthy dose of sketch comedy and short films, can be viewed  at https://www.youtube.com/mordredband/.
