Original Mongolian Folk Metallers NINE TREASURES Stream New Single ‘Three Years Old Warrior’

Original Mongolian Folk Metal group NINE TREASURES are have streamed their single ‘Three Years Old Warrior’, taken from their forthcoming ‘best of’ LP, Awakening From Dukkha, released 19th March.

Stream the track here, originally taken from their 2014 self-titled LP:

Few bands can claim to have an identity and sound as remarkable as NINE TREASURES. Forming in 2010, one of the original Mongolian Folk Metal bands have one simple goal: to take Mongolian heavy metal worldwide.

Now, a decade on; three albums, millions of streams and several European tours and festival shows (Wacken Open Air, Woodstock Poland) later, NINE TREASURES are well on their way, having led a Mongolian metal revolution.

The band are celebrating their journey so far with their new ‘Best Of’ record, Awakening From Dukkha, to be released 19th March. Collecting songs from their 3-LP oeuvre, Awakening From Dukkha is both a stellar introduction to a seminal band for the new listener, and a significant recognition of the group’s achievements so far.

Pre-order the LP here: https://ninetreasures.bandcamp.com/album/awakening-from-dukkha

A celebration of the past it may be, but for vocalist/guitarist Askhan and his bandmates, this decade-spanning collection is also a rebirth for NINE TREASURES:

“Our fans deserve to hear us at our best, which is why we were so motivated to make this album. Now we’ve done that, we just want to keep NINE TREASURES going as long as possible, make music that we’re proud of and spread a little positivity… and tour the world again!”

“It’s always been about the music with us,” he says. “When I started this band I had no idea how things worked, and I thought it was all about marketing, promotion and fancy videos, but after 10 years of doing this, I’ve realised that everything revolves around the music itself. That’s why our focus is on making our music as great as it can be – we’re constantly progressing.”

The music Askhan speaks of is a unique combination of old school heavy metal and traditional Mongolian folk, which sees NINE TREASURES utilise both conventional vocals and Mongolian throat singing. Likewise, guitars, bass and drums collide with traditional string instruments such as the balalaika and the morin khuur, resulting in a sonic kaleidoscope that follows no set template. Unlike much of contemporary rock and metal, there are no rules when it comes to NINE TREASURES, and that makes the quality of the band’s output all the more impressive.

“It’s not as simple as just putting a guitar chord behind some Mongolian melodies,”Askhan explains. “Our music is so much deeper than that. We don’t follow a model, and we work to ensure the two distinct facets of our sound complement one another. I’ve changed the way I play the guitar in order to accommodate the Mongolian elements, and vice-versa. To do this takes a lot of analysis and experimentation.”

Named after a group of objects referenced in ancient Mongolian poems, NINE TREASURES’ music touches on the mythology and fairy tales of their homeland, but the band’s songs contain more universal references, too. Having recently begun practicing Buddhism – “It changed my life,” Askhan says – NINE TREASURES’ frontman is now intent on using their music to bring comfort and ease the suffering of others. “I want to share the teachings I’ve learned with others like me who have experienced anxiety,” Askhan continues. “We want NINE TREASURES to bring some positive energy into the world – the greatest thing we can do with this is to help people.”

AGE OF WOE Release Second Single ‘The Twilight and the Dawn’ From Upcoming Album

AGE OF WOE have released the second single ‘The Twilight and the Dawn’ from the band’s upcoming album and Lifeforce Records debut “Envenom”.

Watch the official video for the single, below.

The sound of the quintet includes elements between doom, sludge, death and post metal. AGE OF WOE are already musically broadly positioned. But the band also breaks boundaries with its line-up, as members come from Sweden, Finland, and Germany. With the addition of Keijo Niinimaa (Rotten Sound, Morbid Evils, Goatburner) the line-up has been completed prominently not too long ago. Formed in the Gothenburg underground scene in the summer of 2010, the creative goal has remained the same over the past decade: AGE OF WOE strive to frighten with gritty, raw heavy sounds. In doing so, the quintet looks for own solution patterns, which also let its punk and DIY ethics shine through.

“Envenom” is the third full length of AGE OF WOE and at the same time their LIFEFORCE debut. The eleven tracks reflect their genesis in the midst of the Corona pandemic with the accompanying fears and sometimes rising anger, but also the latent threat and alienation tendencies. (Societal) Critical lyrics have already been present on the 2013 debut “Inhumanform” and its follow-up, “An Ill Wind Blowing” (2014). Newly added Keijo Niinimaa is also known for clear words. The death metal-based style of play with its numerous widenings provides an ideal musical basis for this.

What stands out above all: on “Envenom”, AGE OF WOE succeed to conclusively to develop their sound decisively further. The contrasts of the dynamic songwriting have strong effects and are impressive. Thanks to the dark heaviness as well as great hooklines and manic vocals, the quintet’s third full length even offers harsh haunting melodies.

Track list:

  1. Inferno
  2. Ghosts Who Hunt Alone
  3. Förpestningen
  4. Patriarch
  5. A Feral Swarm
  6. Avgrunden
  7. The Twilight and the Dawn
  8. Storm
  9. Förbittringen
  10. Envenom
  11. Ljungeld

New UK metal group HERIOT continue their rise with brilliant and brutal new single ‘Recreant’.

Premiering on Knotfest, who called the band “relevant, contemporary, and rooted in reality”, you can watch the video for ‘Recreant’ here:

Stream here: https://smarturl.it/4k713e

The new single showcases a triumphant young band, fully focused and with a razor-sharp edge. Now a fourpiece with the addition of guitarist/vocalist Debbie Gough, HERIOT have already started to turn heads in the UK metal scene and beyond. Weaponising metallic sludge and hardcore, HERIOT had already made a statement of intent with November 2020’s ‘Cleansed Existence’ single and will only turn it up from here.

In the words of HERIOT: “‘Recreant’ reflects on the ever-growing abuse of power in today’s world. With governments, politicians and influencers wrongfully using religion, nationalism and wealth to divide communities, class and race.

“In this release we’ve tried to hone in on some of our darker influences to best suit the lyrical content in this song. As a band we’ve delved deeper into our doom and sludge roots. This track allowed for a lot more experimentation into the use of textures and industrial elements to embellish the intensity of our sound.

“This track touches on the contrast between the privileged and deprived and how the system is carefully manipulated to cater for the wealthy, even showing encouragement for minority groups of people to subconsciously vilify themselves.”

HERIOT are:

Jake Packer – Vocals/Bass
Debbie Gough – Vocals/Guitar
Erhan Alman – Guitar
Julian Gage – Drums

Last Friday, January 29th, Alternative Rock Orchestra MEER released their new album “Playing House” on Karisma Records, celebrating it with a new video “Beehive”.

The video, which features an animated series of paintings, was filmed, edited, and produced by Beth Madeley, and can be seen below.

It is a stunning animation, about which the band had this to say:

The Beehive video is made by the amazing animator and illustrator Beth Madeley. We gave Beth full artistic freedom to make her visual interpretation of the song, and we are awestruck with what she came up with.

A band whose music is mix of orchestral pop, classical music and progressive rock, MEER started life as a duo in Hamar, Norway, in 2008, expanding to become an eight piece whose individual musicians brought with them their own styles, musical interests and influences, to create an interesting eclectic sound.

With “Playing House”,  MEER’s lineup of Johanne Kippersund on vocals, Knut Kippersund on vocals, Eivind Strømstad on guitar, Åsa Ree on violin, Ingvild Nordstoga Eide on viola, Ole Gjøstøl on keyboards, Morten Strypet on bass and Mats Lillehaug on drums have created a sophomore album with a massive sound whose melodies and harmonies bring with them a few surprises.

Recorded at Ocean Sound Recording and Tanken, “Playing House” is  produced by Lars Gärtner Fremmerlid (EINAR STRAY ORCHESTRA).  With artwork by Helena Haglund and Simen Skari, tracklisting for “Playing House”  is as follows:

1. Picking Up the Pieces
2. Beehive
3. All at Sea
4. Songs of Us
5. Child
6. You were a Drum
7. Honey
8. Across the Ocean
9. She Goes
10. Where do We Go from Here?
11. Lay it Down
Vinyl only bonus track:
12. Here I Go Again (Whitesnake cover)

Norwegian, modern rock trio 7 DAYS IN ALASKA are back with the new single, ‘Hurts Like Bullets’, taken from their upcoming album.

Listen HERE.

Watch the lyric video below.

All the songs 7 DAYS IN ALASKA have written during 2020 has been about challenging themselves musically and to try new things. Hurts like Bullets is the opposite. Here are 7 Days In Alaska at their best!

“The song is written about some aspect of heartbreak that we feel is rarely talked about. The one that breaks up is usually the bad guy, if you know what I mean. But sometimes, breaking up with someone can be just as hard as being broken up with. To be “the bigger man” and see that this wont go anywhere and were not good for each other, even if you do love them, is heartbreaking and hurts like bullets.” // 7 Days In Alaska

DESOURCE Unveil New Video “The Diary”

Djent/Metalcore band DESOURCE have unveiled a new video for “The Diary”, taken from their latest EP “Ambition”.

BUY / LISTEN: https://smarturl.it/Desource

Guitarist Edoardo Casini comments about “The Diary”:
“The Diary” is the most fucked up song instead: It’s grindy, fast, heavy, technical and aggressive. It embodies the more raw energies of the band. We have implemented influences such as The Dillinger Escape Plan, Botch, Converge, Meshuggah, Nasum and many others in a deadly cocktail of an endless list of subgenres.

The videoclip, written and directed by Alvaro Diamanti and produced by the leader of the band, Edoardo Casini, represents a homage to the great directors such as Quentin Tarantino and Eli Roth.

After the release of the debut album “Dirty Happiness” and sharing the stage with acts such as ARCHITECTS, NORTHLANE, COMEBACK KID, PROTEST THE HERO, MONUMENTS, Desource returns with their 5 track EP “Ambition”, which features world-renown drummer Mike Malyan (MONUMENTS, DISPERSE, THE ALGORITHM) who has taken care of all the drums for the release.

“Ambition”, as the title explains is a very ambitious record: it’s way more technical, progressive and dense than “Dirty Happiness”. It’s really a step forward in every direction: musically, lyrically. There are so many genres combined in the songs such as Mathcore, Djent, Progressive Metal, Metalcore, Rock, Grind.

“Ambition” EP is available at Rockshots Records Store: https://bit.ly/Ambition_CD
