Canada’s The Metal Voice on New Year’s Eve Dec 31 2020 spoke to guitarist Michael Gilbert of Flotsam and Jetsam, legendary drummer Carmine Appice, Aldo Nova and singer of Sword’s Rick Hughes in special New Years Special

Flotsam and Jetsam’s Michael Gilbert Tell us about the upcoming new studio album by Flotsam and Jetsam
“The new Flotsam and Jetsam album was supposed to come out in January 2021 that was what the plan was, so the album is pretty much done. Everything is done, completed, except for the artwork as and it is now pushed to June 2021. So we stopped doing the white knuckle recording and started taking our time with the mixes. I think we are going to be releasing a lyric video pretty soon for the first single, maybe February March 2021. ”

Tell us about the musical direction
“This is the perfect follow-up to The End of Chaos (last album). We could not have planned it any better. It ended up coming out like The End of Chaos on steroids basically you are going to love it. The musical direction is going to be brutal for a Flotsam record, it’s a step above Chaos for sure. ”

Carmine Appice Tell us what projects are you working on in 2021
“I got a new Cactus album coming out, I’m working on a new instrumental album, then all my drum instructional books (eight of them) are being re-released in 2021 coming out on Modern Drummer publications. Also my brother Vinny and I have been talking about a new album and we got some half done demos and Jim Crean is singing on it but it’s hard to get Vinny motivated.”

Tell us about the passing of your friend Leslie West
“I knew him the longest of anyone in the business. Leslie was an amazing player, funny guy and had a real dark crazy sense of humour. I have known his since 1963, I was in an R and B funk band, with horns everything and we played the same club opposite from each other, half on half off. Then I played with Leslie in 1975, it was me Mick Jones who ended up being in Foreigner, Kenny Arniston and Lesie what a great band it was. We did Mississippi Queen and there is a video on Youtube if you want to see.”

Aldo Nova Tell us about your new studio release The life and times of Eddie Gage
“Eddie Gage is a Rock Opera with 27 songs and is on hold. I was going to put it out but I am now putting out an E.P. (from the album) probably March or April 2021. I am in the process of doing a mini Documentary on how the new studio album was done and put together. Also I am  uploading New Youtube video performances on Aldo Nova channel of my classic songs check them out they are smokin.”

Sword’s Rick Hughes Tell us about the Musical direction of the New Sword album on Combat Records
“The reaction to the new single In Kommad has been amazing. What I like the most about Sword’s latest project is that every song is so totally different from one track to another. The song In Kommad is the thrasher song of the album. Then you will get a song which will remind you of the early days of Black Sabbath, with a bit of Dio and a bit of Ozzy and some Motorhead. The first song is just the tip of the Iceberg and I really mean it. I know everyone is anxious to hear the album but the Pandemic has all our plans struck down, everything was ready to go and tour with the big boys in the USA so we have to wait.”

Lithuanian dark metallers JUODVARNIS closed the year 2020 by sharing a video from their performance at MJR Kaukynės XXI½ festival. The band presented their newest album “Nerimo Dienos” (‘Days of Disquiet’) by headlining the main scene of the festival on 28th of August, 2020. The video shows band playing the 2nd track from the new album – “Iš amžių šaknų”.

The band also shares thoughts with their audience about the passing year 2020:

This year will be engraved deep in our memories. We all had to learn to live differently and most common things became almost or completely impossible. But we are able to adapt, endure and move forward.

It has been a unique year for us as a band. ‘Nerimo dienos’ took a lot of work and attention, but it was a magnificent feeling to close this cycle. Never before have we received such great feedback for our work. We are also very happy that in this difficult time we were able to play just a few, but amazing shows. We’d like to share one of those moments with you right now!

We present a live version of ‘Iš amžių šaknų’. Recorded and filmed at MJR XXI½  Festival. Let’s remember that marvelous night!

We wish for the coming year to be lighter and for all your sorrows and hardships to be left behind. We hope to see you soon!

Nashville-based rock trio GOODING have released The Most Fire, their third full length album of 2020. The Most Fire is a follow up to the band’s recently released albums Mayday (August 21) and The Darkest of Hours (October 9) and is the third and final installment of Hymns for Revolution, a three-part concept album of dark, apocalyptic, and cinematic rock ‘n roll.

The Most Fire can be heard HERE

Like Mayday and The Darkest of Hours before it, The Most Fire was recorded entirely in a basement studio during the Covid-19 quarantine. As the world moves into the new year with a glimmer of hope on the horizon, The Most Fire serves as the closing chapter of the most tumultuous year of our lifetime.

In support of the new album, the band released a video for the leadoff single “Crashing Down” which can be viewed HERE.

“‘Crashing Down’ is a fitting first single for the new album as it contains many of the themes for the entire record: empathy vs anger, not buying into fear and greed, becoming who we are, finding light in a difficult time, and the hope that we can remember that we need one another, and the very environment around us,” said Gooding, the band’s namesake and front man.

“The video was shot right before the sun went down here in Nashville,” he added. We’re still getting leaves out of the amps and drums.”

GOODING is a fearless, high-energy 3 piece rock n’ roll band based in Nashville, TN consisting of Gooding (guitars, vocals), Erin O’Neill (bass, vocals), and Kelsey Cook (drums, vocals). They play over 150 clubs, high schools, and theaters a year, and have more than 2000 shows in over 200 cities under their belt. The band has been featured in over 500 film and television placements, and helped form Funding The Future, a 501(c)(3) non-profit where they and other artists perform for and teach financial literacy to high school students in an effort combat income inequality.

“With love from us to you, here’s ‘You Never ask Me Why'”

To celebrate the start of the new year 2021, GENTLE SAVAGE have released a lyric video for their new single ‘YNAMW (You Never Ask Me Why)’, taken from the band’s upcoming debut album ‘Midnight Waylay’, out in February 2021.

Watch the video here:

Lead vocalist Tornado on video:
“YNAMW ( You Never ask Me Why) lyric video was designed to boost the story without stealing any attention from the music. It continues the comic book theme Gentle Savage started with the Honey Bunny animation video. The making of the graphic world of YNAMW was inspired by guns, vampires and cowboys and the video builds up mostly on the lyrics. Sometimes simplicity is all that is needed. Video was animated by Tornados cousin Kristian K XP.”

Stream on Spotify and all major streaming services, here: https://smarturl.it/GS_YNAMW_2020

Lead vocalist Tornado on the single:
“YNAMW (You Never Ask Me Why) started out as a funny triplet feel guitar riff with sound effects of whipping and wicked screaming. The first idea was to write a song with the feel of a Clint Eastwood type of a Western movie. While being on a sick leave, vocalist Tornado Bearstone watched The Twilight Saga (accidentally of course). Somehow the idea of superhuman powers, beauty and eternal love appealed to Tornado’s state of mind and a modern Cowboy – Vampire character was born in his imagination. So you can say that the story of You Never Ask Me Why was inspired by the movies.”

He continues, “As a composition YNAMW is somewhere between Gentle Savage’s songs Run Run Poor Boy and Karelian Magic. It has a melodic chorus that gives a good contrast to the quite bold and rhythmic feel of the verses. You can easily recognize it as a Gentle Savage song with the guaranteed sounds they are already known for. There’s plenty of interesting things going on both musically and story wise as the Cowboy – Vampire goes out looking for the one he loves! And bites.”

Also watch Jay, Tim & Tornado jamming a medley and wishing you a Happy New Year 2021:

Gentle Savage’s debut album, ‘Midnight Waylay’ is coming out in February 2021. It’s a way of describing an ambush at midnight, or going to a rock show; you never know what’s going to happen out there.

Midnight Waylay depicts a ‘taking it easy in the daytime, turning into a beast at night’ kind of lifestyle. Just like a hunter strikes from the shadows, ruthless and silent, these songs can without warning rock your world.

As a concept the album Midnight Waylay is best appreciated when served whole, but each song has its own character and works well independently. Find your own adventure, let yourself loose!”

“It is all about the songs. And their internal message. That’s the basic philosophy behind Gentle Savage.”
