For decades, fans have been asking for a vinyl release of the iconic and beloved albums of viking/folk metal legends WINDIR. On March 5, 2021, that dream will become a reality! The black metal classics ‘Soknardalr,’ (1997), ‘Arntor’ (1999), ‘1184’ (2000), and ‘Likferd’ (2003) will be available in a special limited edition wooden box set via Season of Mist. ‘The Sognametal Legacy’ box set is strictly limited to 1184 copies worldwide.
WINDIR was founded by Terje “Valfar” Bakken in 1994 and released four albums in the period of 1997 – 2003. The Norwegian band gained a massive following with their unique blend of black and heavy metal with elements of old Norwegian folk music, solidifying their place among the early developers of the folk and viking metal sound. The identity of the group was strongly connected to their home region Sogn, which was demonstrated in the lyrics and in the concepts of the records. Eventually, they invented and adopted the term ‘Sognametal’ for their style.
The band ended abruptly when Terje “Valfar” Bakken died in 2004. The remaining musicians decided to disband WINDIR and formed VREID to march forward, bearing the torch of the Sognametal legacy.
Jarle Hváll Kvåle, bass guitarist and songwriter of VREID and WINDIR, comments on the release: “I am so happy that we are finally able to do this. There has been such a huge demand to release these albums on vinyl and I really have been looking forward to this day. These records are important cornerstones in our lives and represent a time that was very special to us. It is great to have a strong partner on board, and I am very proud that we can do this together with Season of Mist.
“Next year marks the 20th anniversary of ‘1184,’ and we think this is a great occasion to celebrate this unique album, the most important one in the WINDIR history. With this record, WINDIR became a full band for the first time and it was the first time that me and Terje wrote an album together. It was a time filled with youthful will, aggression, pride, curiosity and of course beautiful naivety.
“So, to celebrate this record and the period it represents, we’ll have the entire WINDIR legacy available on vinyl. I can’t wait to get my hands on the physical copies and see no better way to celebrate the legacy and brotherhood of our fallen comrade Terje.”
Pre-orders have started immediately and are available in the Season of Mist shop HERE.
A teaser for ‘The Sognametal Legacy’ has been unveiled and can be viewed at the Season of Mist Youtube Channel HERE.
Norwegian black ‘n roll formation VREID have furthermore announced that they will headline the Karmøygeddon festival, with an exclusive ‘1184’ show. “‘1184’ is a very important album for us as a band and not least for me personally”, states songwriter and bassist Jarle Kvåle. This was the first album Terje and I wrote together. It was the first time that WINDIR became a complete band even though we had played concerts together since 1995 and had been making music together since 1993. It seems inconceivable that it has been 20 years but all the more enjoyable to see how much this record still means to people. We are really looking forward to gather the full band and perform the entire 1184 album at the Karmøygeddon Festival”.
Karmøygeddon will take place on May 6 – 8, 2021, in Kopervik, Norway. Find more information HERE.

Bay Area metal titans MACHINE HEAD have released a new single “My Hands Are Empty,” today on Nuclear Blast. The song marks the first musical collaboration between MH mastermind Robb Flynn and original “Burn My Eyes” guitarist Logan Mader in 24 years.
From the haunting opening vocal, the classical drums, the melancholy guitar line, the listener knows they are in for something epic. The sky gets a little darker, the goosebumps start to prickle the skin, ears search to hear what comes next. By the time the verse kicks in, the heaviness overtakes.
“MISERY, cover me in waves, the heartache is slowly, withering, I become her slave”
And so begins a song of depression and opioid addiction, by MACHINE HEAD.
Guitarist/vocalist Robb Flynn begins, “I have some family members who have beaten their opioid addiction, and have some still in the throes of addiction. It is painful to watch, and I deal with it with great difficulty. It is a song of sadness, but there is hope as well. I have beaten my own drug addictions and we can fight through this, together, and share our pain with the world.”
He continues, “Musically I wanted to go for a bit of a “Through The Ashes OF Empires” vibe, and it had a grandiose vibe from the beginning, something about that vocal melody haunted me day and night. I sent it off to one of our collaborators Joel Wanasek, and he came back with a whole depth and dimension with strings and keys that really made the song come alive. I added the guitar harmony in the chorus soon after and I knew we were on to something special.
On the recent “Burn My Eyes 25th Anniversary Tour” I mentioned to Logan about needing a riff or two for a new song, he was excited to collaborate, I sent him the song and the next day he sent me back the heavy riff in the bridge and I was floored. It fit perfectly, and felt really cool to be writing together 24 years later. Jared came up with the rhythm under the lead section and the song really locked into place.”
Guitarist Logan Mader adds, “During pre-pro for the BME anniversary tour last year, I had a special opportunity to collaborate with Machine Head for the first time in over 20 years.
This is a big milestone for me, to circle back on a massive orbit around life and end up doing new music with MH is epic and unexpected. The song, “My Hands Are Empty” was almost completed but needed a riff or two. Robb sent it to me, so I jumped in and added a section which ended up in the master after some arrangement tweaks by Robb. The song is amazing. It was a great feeling to be in the studio with Robb after all these years and I hope to do it again!”
The earth-pounding drums were performed by Navene Koperweis (ENTHEOS, WHITECHAPEL, ANIMALS AS LEADERS) who performed on the track “Circle The Drain” (released in February) and the song feature trading vocals in the chorus between lead singer Flynn and bassist Jared MacEachern for a truly dynamic feeling musical piece.
Once again produced by Zack Ohren and Robb Flynn, and masterfully mixed by Colin Richardson, the accompanying video was directed by Mike Sloat / Roaring Mouse Productions and proved to be quite a challenge in the Covid-19-era, with Northern California health officials shutting down the shoot 24 hours prior, but ever the improvisers, were able salvage the whole affair, and the stunning results can be viewed in the video.
“My Hands Are Empty” Lyrics:
Misery, cover me in waves The heartache is slowly Withering, I become her slave Succumb to the darkness
Suffocating like I’m drowning in sand Depression’s got me by her cold dead hands
Treachery, the choices you made Cut my heart open with this golden blade
My hands are empty, lies so petty My hands are empty, kill me gently
Medicate, I watched you slowly die The powders and pills Disintegrate, you right before my eyes The emptiness haunts me
Glass reflections of a cold dead stare Ingesting chemicals of death with no care
Memories, they haunt me they stain Of what you once meant to me before this pain
My hands are empty, lies so petty My hands are empty, kill me gently
I, I will not hide these scars of mine (Take away the shame) I, I will not be what’s left behind (Find someone else to blame) Forgiveness, constricted No longer human A ghost in time
