Since their formation in 2009, Der Weg einer Freiheit have carved out a singular place in modern black metal. While rooted in the genre’s foundations, the band are constantly evolving. Their latest critically-acclaimed album once again pushes boundaries. Only this time, they’ve turned inward, gazing upon humanity’s fragile nature with devastating clarity.

“[Innern] flexes the cooperative bond between Der Weg einer Freiheit members and asserts the whole above the individual parts”, writes Treble.

Today, Der Weg einer Freiheit are releasing a new live video from their recent headlining tour of Europe. Recorded at the Christuskirche Bochum church in Germany during the final night of the tour, this performance of “Xibalba” captures the band at their most transformative, wrestling with fear until it resembles something closer to understanding.

Watch Der Weg einer Freiheit perform “Xibalba” live at Christuskirche Bochum:

“Xibalba” unfolds as a descent into the architecture of fear. The song moves from quiet birth to violent bloom and eventual dissolution. Vocalist and guitarist Nikita Kamprad leads his bandmates Tobias Schuler (drums), Alan Noruspur (guitar) and Vincent Padrutt (bass) through a climatic surge of catharsis before arriving in a suspended state of meditative stillness.

With Innern, their sixth studio album, DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT return with their most introspective and compositionally expansive work to date. A meditation on suffering, transformation, and the fragile thresholds of the human psyche, Innern refines the band’s signature blend of black metal intensity and post-metal atmosphere. The title, German for “inward”, anchors the album’s conceptual weight: a turning away from the external, into a realm of personal reckoning, silence, and renewal. Across six meticulously crafted tracks, the band explores cycles of disintegration and emergence, inviting listeners to confront the deep and often contradictory nature of existence itself.

DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT formed in Würzburg, Germany in 2009, the brainchild of guitarist and composer Nikita Kamprad and original vocalist Tobias Jaschinsky. The band’s early beginnings were humble but explosive: their self-released debut quickly sold out, drawing attention across the underground metal scene. A reissue in 2010 with newly recorded drum parts by Christian Bass(Heaven Shall Burn, ex-Night in Gales) established the band’s first official lineup and led to extensive touring across Germany and Europe. From the outset, DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT were set apart not just by their technical prowess, but by a philosophical inclination that would become the band’s artistic hallmark.

Their 2012 sophomore album, Unstille, expanded on their debut’s melodic harshness, while introducing a deeper emotional weight. It also marked the first appearance of drummer Tobias Schuler, whose intricate and expressive playing would become central to the band’s identity. Though vocals on Unstille were still performed by Tobias Jaschinsky, he would leave the band shortly after its release. Kamprad took over vocal duties in the months that followed, stepping into the role of frontman in time for the writing and recording of their next album.

Stellar, released in 2015 via Season of Mist, solidified the band’s stature within the modern black metal landscape. Drawing from post-rock and progressive influences, the album embraced wider dynamics and cinematic structures, aligning them with the likes of Wolves in the Throne Room and Deafheaven, without sacrificing their own Germanic rigor and introspection.

In 2017, Finisterre signaled a conceptual leap forward. It confronted themes of isolation, personal dissolution, and spiritual finality across sprawling arrangements and stark tonal shifts. This period saw further lineup changes, with the departure of guitarist Sascha Rissling and bassist Giuliano Barbieri, and the arrival of Nicolas Rausch and Nicolas Ziska. Finisterre also marked their first chart placement in Germany and set the stage for increasingly ambitious live performances.

A live album, Live in Berlin (2019), captured the raw power and cathartic energy of the band’s concerts, affirming their reputation for immersive, emotionally charged performances. But it was Noktvrn, released in 2021, that truly redefined what DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT could become. Inspired by the ambiguous state between wakefulness and dreams, and drawing influence from classical composers such as Chopin and Arvo Pärt, the album saw Kamprad experiment with clean vocals and subdued textures. It was both a thematic and sonic breakthrough and was received by critics as their most refined and contemplative release to date.

Now, with Innern, DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT move even deeper into the abyss. Produced, mixed, and mastered by Kamprad in his own studio, the album is an intensely focused work.”Eos,” the album’s lead single, contrasts war and renewal, imagining a post-human earth fertilized by sacrifice and reclaimed by nature.”Marter” follows as a searing portrayal of inner torment and emotional release—suffering not only as a source of agony, but as a path toward transcendence. “Xibalba” then confronts the machinery of fear—media, propaganda, and spiritual fragmentation—urging a return to our collective essence through introspection and clarity. And with “Forlorn,” the band delivers their most vulnerable statement yet: a delicate plea for emotional refuge, sung in English to underscore its universality. The album also marks the studio debut of bassist Alan Noruspur, whose presence brings anew emotional and personal depth to the band’s sound.

Musically, Innern leans into contrast and contradiction. Kamprad and Rausch’s guitar interplay oscillates between searing aggression and elegiac restraint. Noruspur’s basslines pulse with warmth and gravity, while Schuler’s drumming remains as meticulous as ever-bridging technicality with emotional nuance. The album’s production captures a sense of immediacy and live energy, yet remains rich in detail and atmosphere. It is not merely a refinement of past styles, but are invention—one that places the listener in direct confrontation with the void.

DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT stand now at the peak of a fifteen-year evolution.Their music is as concerned with silence as it is with sound, as shaped by introspection as by fury. As they prepare to bring Innern to European stages in autumn 2025, they do so not as provocateurs of extremity, but as artists navigating the fragile space between collapse and clarity. In a genre often defined by spectacle, DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT remain committed to vulnerability, transformation, and truth.

NUKEM Debut Performance Video for Furious New Single ‘Random Acts of Violence’

Single Artwork by Travis Smith

California has always been fertile ground for thrash metal, leading the charge with some of the genre’s most legendary acts. San Diego’s NUKEM follows in the footsteps of thrash metal’s founding fathers, producing the kind of time-tested, neck-breaking thrash that invokes deep nostalgia while still sounding fresh and modern.

Now, the thrashers have not only forged a new union with the label Redefining Darkness, but they are now unleashing a raucous new single, “Random Acts of Violence,” which also features a guest guitar solo from Russ Tippins of the band Satan. The track is now available along with a visceral performance video that is sure to summon the kind of balls-to-the-wall, feral mosh pit that would make the late, great Paul Baloff proud. Watch the video HERE.

NUKEM guitarist/vocalist Steve Brogden comments on the heavy yet important lyrical content of the song, “We are stoked to share the first single ‘Random Acts of Violence’ from our new record. This track is a full bore aggressive thrash metal attack that directly mirrors its lyrical content. In an age where mass shootings, stabbings & people getting beat to death in the streets for a social media challenge has become normal, It truly shows how lost we are as a society. 24 years ago, there was a shooting at my high school leaving 2 dead & 13 wounded by a 15 year old armed assailant. In almost a quarter century, things have certainly not gotten any better!”

“Random Acts of Violence” is taken from NUKEM‘s forthcoming sophomore full-length, for which details will soon be revealed! Stay tuned…

Nukem is a Thrash metal force from San Diego, California, that delivers an honest, old school thrash attack. Formed in 2012, Nukem released their 2016 debut album “The Unholy Trinity”, which was mixed & mastered by Ulrich Wild (Pantera, Static X, Dethklok, White Zombie) and was released via Sleaszy Rider Records out of Greece.

Nukem had entered the studio in 2024 once again with Ulrich Wild to work on our second album. Ten songs of pure molten metal! Some songs are full on unstoppable Bay Area style Thrash metal violence while others are more of a mid tempo power groove. Nukem has now forged a new union with Redefining Darkness for the release of their oncoming onslaught… stay tuned!

Indoor Enthusiast, the outstanding third record from TUESDAY THE SKY, the instrumental-driven project from guitarist Jim Matheos, arrives this Friday, October 24th via Metal Blade Records!

TUESDAY THE SKY has been described as a “beautifully weird solo project” by Sonic Perspectives, while Dead Rhetoric dubbed it a “kaleidoscope of atmospheric songs.” With eleven songs of pure Matheos-patented playing and passion, this year’s Indoor Enthusiast features Dutch drummer Dennis Leeflang on “The Nearest Exit May Be Behind You,” “Bend Toward Light,” and “Set Fire To The Stars.”

Matheos, famed for his work with progressive metal giants Fates Warning, alongside projects such as OSI and his collaboration with John Arch, Arch/Matheos, planted the seeds of TUESDAY THE SKY around 2016. The impetus came from a Fates Warning bonus track that Matheos felt didn’t fit for the band. He kept writing in that vein, and the result was TUESDAY THE SKY. The initial offering was 2017’s Drift, a record that drew influence from the likes of Brian Eno, Sigur Ros, Boards Of Canada, and Explosions In The Sky.

The second TUESDAY THE SKY album was 2021’s The Blurred Horizon, a mixture of ambient, electronica, post-rock, and more. The Blurred Horizon is perhaps best described as a beautiful record, having a natural grace to it. The closing track “Everything Is Free” is a cover of a Gillian Welch and David Rawlings song, and the only song with vocals, supplied by Tim Bowness.

Indoor Enthusiast is entirely instrumental, produced and mixed by Matheos, and mastered by Jacob Hansen.

Watch a visualizer for the track “The Nearest Exit May Be Behind You” HERE.

TUESDAY THE SKY‘s Indoor Enthusiast will be available on CD and digital formats at: metalblade.com/tuesdaythesky

01. The Nearest Exit May Be Behind You
02. Ghost Train
03. Zugzwang

06. The Last Lonely Lamppost
07. Get Lost
08. Between Wind and Water
09. Memento Mori
10. Set Fire to the Stars

“Jim Matheos just might be the best guitar player nobody ever talks about. He’s all about tone, nuance, and restraint, which goes completely against the prog metal grain… I think of him as prog metal’s version of David Gilmour.” – AngryMetalGuy.com

THOR Drives the ‘Highway Star’ Back to His Earliest Days

When Jon Mikl Thor first hit the road in the early 1970s, he knew he already had one of the most physical stageshows of the age, and one of the most exhilarating live bands, as well.  It was natural, then, as the set list came together, he’d be looking for songs that matched the momentum that was burning up the stage.

His own songwriting was still in its infancy at the time.  But 50 years later, Thor’s new album, Rock The Universe, reveals how easy it was to take a clutch of favorite covers and truly make them his own.  The Sweet, The Yardbirds, The Doors, The Kinks… Thor tore his own record collection to shreds and rebuilt it around his burgeoning legend, his personal mythology, and… let’s face it… his great taste in music!

“In the 1970s I toured extensively, over 300 days a year across North America, and Rock The Universe is chock-full of songs from that era. These are favorite songs of mine that we played each night, and thus enabled myself and the band to become seasoned performers.

“It also gave me the opportunity, almost 50 years later, to join forces again with [original guitarist] Frank Soda to lay down those magical tracks …that would fuel our tours. Songs by our heroes.”

Al Harlow (Prism) and Ray Roper (Stonebolt) complete the album line-up, and it was produced by Kevin Stuart Swain, who also played multiple instruments on it. When Thor describes their performances as “stellar,” it’s not hyperbole.

And his latest video, “Highway Star,” might just be the most stellar of them all.

It’s certainly the most dramatic, as Thor explains. “Frantic and fun,” as well.  Deep Purple, he says, were already one of his favorite bands, but even within their catalog, “Highway Star” was something special.

The opening track on the epochal Machine Head, “This song was one of the foundational songs for speed metal.  With its speed and driving rhythm, and its powerful, fast and energetic tempo, it helped bridge the gap between classic rock and the heavier sounds of heavy metal.

“It makes you want to jump in your car and put the pedal to the metal.”  An urge, incidentally, “which is depicted full force in the new Thor video.”

Meanwhile, Rock The Universe continues to pull in the plaudits.

“Each of these songs… fills me with joy… He’s perfectly suited to all these songs, in fine voice (and Frank Soda plays the solo for “Highway Star” with the utmost reverence, a note-for-note rip-through.” – Alienatedinvancouver.blogspot

“I don’t know where he gets the energy and enthusiasm but Thor has rocked the universe once again!” – Metal-rules.com

“Epic riffs, superhero vibes, and metal mayhem. Thor is still rocking HARD.” – diazablereviews

Season of Mist is proud to welcome Bedsore!

Seven years ago, Bedsore appeared from Italy’s underground with a magical potion that stirs together death metal, vintage prog rock and cinematic horror. The band’s first album Hypnagogic Hallucinations was plenty potent, though last year’s follow-up proved truly mesmerizing. Dreaming the Strife for Love was named one of the best metal albums of 2024 by Brooklyn Vegan, Treble, BangerTV and other notable publications.

Now, as the band return to the studio for their upcoming third album and first since fleshing out into a six-piece lineup, Bedsore are pleased to finally reveal that they’ve signed with Season of Mist.

“With a long and continued tradition of supporting leading artists who are on the cutting edge, Season of Mist represents the perfect partner for Bedsore’s musical imagery, offering us an open field for creative exploration while also helping us reach listeners who truly care”, says the band’s founding members Jacopo Gianmaria Pepe and Stefano Allegretti. “Being part of this forward-thinking family gives us the freedom to keep developing our aesthetic without any compromise, which is why joining hands with Season of Mist feels like the wisest decision for us at this stage.

“We would firmly like to extend our heartfelt thanks to 20 Buck Spin for their invaluable contributions so far. We would not be here today without their trust and support. We sincerely wish them the very best as we take on a new step of our journey”.

To go along with their new label home, Bedsore are also thrilled to announce today that they have joined forces with Swamp Booking. “We are truly excited to work alongside what is hands down one of the best booking acts around and look forward to bringing our music to stages everywhere”, the band continues. “As good things come in threes, new sensational music is already in the works and marks a transition toward something even more ambitious. We can’t wait to move forward and share it with all of you soon!”

Don’t miss Bedsore when they close out 2025 alongside StarGazer and Drowned.

ALBERTO RIGONI & MICHAEL MANRING Announce Legendary Bassist STUART HAMM as Third Bassist on Upcoming Album “Dystopia”

Posted by tarjavirmakari on October 23, 2025

Celebrated Italian bassist, composer, and producer ALBERTO RIGONI, together with world-renowned virtuoso MICHAEL MANRING, proudly announce the addition of STUART HAMM to their upcoming instrumental progressive rock/ambient album Dystopia. With Hamm joining the lineup alongside drummer David Menoudakis, the project’s powerful ensemble is now almost complete. A famous drummer will be announced soon as special guest!!!

A pioneer of modern electric bass, Stuart Hamm has redefined the boundaries of the instrument through his visionary solo albums and collaborations with icons such as Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, and Frank Gambale. His signature blend of technical brilliance, melodic sensibility, and fearless experimentation adds a new dimension to Dystopia, enriching its sonic architecture with depth and intensity.

“When Alberto and Michael invited me to be part of Dystopia, I immediately felt the creative spark,” says Stuart Hamm. “The concept of three distinct bass voices blending and contrasting within the same musical vision is incredibly exciting. Each of us brings our own tone, feel, and emotion — it’s like a dialogue between different worlds of bass.”

The interplay among Rigoni, Manring, and Hamm highlights their unique sonic personalities — from ambient and melodic passages to aggressive and experimental textures. The album promises an immersive listening experience that showcases the expressive range of the instrument like never before.

The full album Dystopia is scheduled for release in the early months of next year.

Fans can already pre-order the digital edition via Bandcamp at:

A Digipack CD edition will be produced, and limited vinyl versions are also being considered. Rigoni is currently in discussions with several international record labels for the release of this new album.
