WINDSWEPT Resurrect Historic Witch Trials on New Album “The Devil’s Vertep”, Out Now

In 2017, Roman Sayenko of Drudkh started a new band built on raw black metal. Now, Windswept are casting a cold spell over a dark moment in Ukrainian history with their upcoming third album The Devil’s Vertep.

“True Ukrainian Black Metal through and through”, This Is Black Metal writes in a review of The Devil’s Vertep. “Another stellar accomplishment out of Windswept.

“…a fiercely intense album that at times can be quite melodic and very raw” The Metal Pit says.

The Devil’s Vertep was released, Friday, December 12, 2026 on Season of Mist Underground Activists, and you can hear all six blazing tracks by listening to the full album stream at Black Metal Promotion.

Order the album here: https://orcd.co/windsweptthedevilsvertep

Across The Devil’s Vertep, Windswept retrace the witch trials that took place in Western Ukraine between 1753 and 1754. The album blisteringly unfolds across six acts: the grim discovery narrated in “Infanticide,” the escalating procedures of “Investigation” and “Torture & Confession,” the witchdoctor’s craft in “The Potion,” the broader networks of sorcery in “Nest of the Witches,” and the judicial reckoning in “Verdicts.” With a cold hard gaze, Windswept transform archival records into unflinching black-metal.

Tracklist

  1. Infanticide (6:10)
  2. Investigation (7:18)
  3. Torture & Confession (8:38)
  4. The Potion (6:58)
  5. Nest of the Witches (4:57)
  6. Verdicts (7:54)
    Full runtime: 42:09

WINDSWEPT return with The Devil’s Vertep, a new full-length rooted in historical documentation and stark musical expression. Inspired by The Black Book of Kremenets Castle 1747–1777, the record traces the witch trials of 1753–1754 in Western Ukraine, unfolding as a conceptual narrative across six compositions. Each track immerses listeners in a chilling atmosphere of accusation, confession, and execution, rendered through raw black metal shaped by both immediacy and conviction.

The project was founded in 2016 by Roman Sayenko, best known as the driving force behind Drudkh, alongside two close collaborators. Conceived as a space for spontaneity and instinctive creation, Windswept sought to capture black metal in its most unfiltered form. Sessions were approached with minimal preparation, often recorded in only a matter of days, ensuring the vitality of live performance informed every moment. While echoes of Sayenko’s other work could be felt, Windswept’s essence lay in improvisation and a raw fidelity to the Ukrainian black metal tradition.

Their debut, The Great Cold Steppe (2017), was stark and unforgiving, reflecting the desolate landscape of its title. The record quickly distinguished itself for its icy atmospheres and direct execution, a distillation of black metal at its harshest. This was followed in 2018 by the Visionaire EP on Ván Records, which deepened their exploration of fleeting, improvisatory intensity. A year later, The Onlooker (2019, Season of Mist: Underground Activists reaffirmed the band’s commitment to spontaneity. It offered a fierce, stripped-down sound that echoed early traditions while maintaining Windswept’s hallmark rawness.

With The Devil’s Vertep, Windswept turn toward historical narrative. Drawing on trial records preserved in the Black Book of Kremenets Castle, the album reconstructs testimonies of women accused of witchcraft, their brutal interrogations, and the violent judgments passed upon them. Each piece is tied to a specific chapter: “Infanticide” opens with the grim discovery of a newborn’s corpse, “Investigation” and “Torture & Confession” trace the harrowing interrogations, while “The Potion,” “Nest of the Witches,” and “Verdicts” reveal the network of accusations and the sentences delivered.

While The Devil’s Vertep marks Windswept’s first venture into Ukrainian demonology and witchcraft, these themes trace back much earlier in Roman Sayenko’s creative path. In the autumn of 1996, Sayenko began developing an unfinished project titled KOZLONOGYI (Goat-Footed):  a concept rooted in the same folkloric and mythological territory that would later resurface within The Devil’s Vertep. Although KOZLONOGYI never moved beyond a few rehearsals, its sketches and early riffs became the foundation for Windswept’s latest work. By reviving and re-working these ideas nearly three decades later, Sayenko bridges eras of black metal evolution, imbuing The Devil’s Vertep with a distinctly 1990s sensibility and reverence for the early traditions that shaped his artistic identity.

Recorded, mixed, and mastered at Viter Music with production handled internally, The Devil’s Vertep balances immediacy with conceptual cohesion. Its stark presentation reflects the gravity of the source material, while the cover art by Obsidian Bone situates the work in a visual landscape as unsettling as the music itself. By channelling the voices of the past, Windswept expand their raw black metal vision into a work of historical remembrance, turning archival fragments into a haunting artistic statement.

About A.A. WILLIAMS

Having made her debut live appearance at the prestigious Roadburn Festival in the Netherlands off the back of a self-titled EP, A.A. WILLIAMS has since toured across the globe with the likes of CULT OF LUNA, EXPLOSIONS IN THE SKY, RUSSIAN CIRCLES, SLEEP TOKEN and THE SISTERS OF MERCY, as well as establishing herself as a headline artist – including a show at the iconic Queen Elizabeth Hall inside London’s Southbank Centre.

Standout festival appearances have dovetailed with two album releases – 2020’s Forever Blue and 2022’s As The Moon Rests, which both received widespread critical acclaim and put A.A. WILLIAMS firmly in the slipstream of the wave of female vocalists taking textured, epic and folk-rooted heavy music into new and progressive directions. A BBC session at the legendary Maida Vale Studios only bolstered WILLIAMS’ credentials.

Not one to rest on her laurels, she has also released a selection of ‘companion pieces’ – a collaborative single with Japanese post-rock titans MONO (“Exit In Darkness”); a solo covers collection recorded during 2020’s pandemic lockdown — Songs From Isolation — that garnered praise from THE CURE’s Robert Smith and SMASHING PUMPKINS‘ Billy Corgan for her unique take on their original songs; and perhaps most impressively, 2021’s arco saw the multi-instrumentalist completely rework her debut EP from rock instrumentation to a string ensemble, utilising her classical training and arrangement skills to stunning effect.

With new label partner Reigning Phoenix Music, 2026 will serve as a major milestone for A.A. WILLIAMS.

Hamburg’s modern melodic thrash/metal force GODSNAKE return with a standalone single: “No Happy End”, a previously unreleased track originally recorded during the sessions for their latest studio album Eye For An Eye.

Singer Torger comments: “‘No Happy End’ is a great piece of music that was originally recorded for our last album Eye For An Eye… and unfortunately had to be put on hold due to limited vinyl capacity/time. We are more than happy to finally release this sexy baby. Take it as an ear-candy to sweeten the waiting time for the new album. A typical GODSNAKE pearl: straight, powerful and catchy. HIRAKI Reveal New Single And Live Piano Session Video for ‘Thee Ode’

Danish trio HIRAKI have revealed their new single ‘Thee Ode’ via famed German progressive label Pelagic Records.

Stream here: https://orcd.co/hiraki-theeode

HIRAKI have also revealed a live piano session video which you can watch here:

After spending the last few years channelling their explosive energy as co-conspirators with projects like the doom-rave collective JOHN CXNNOR, the synthpunk trio are now back in control of their own realm.

Brace yourself for a tidal wave of aggressive noise rock, an aggressive style of progressive synthpunk from the edge of the abyss. As a part of Denmark’s flourishing underground scene for dark and heavy music, the three-piece present a sonic assault to accompany the inevitable fact: our world is sick and we are all responsible for this.

With foam at their mouths, HIRAKI sing, scream, and recite their way through songs about corrupted data and moral decay. Encouraged by boundless acts like Botch, Street Sects, and The Body, HIRAKI were formed in 2016, when the progressive rock band Liserstille went into hibernation. Jon Gotlev and Tue Schmidt Rasmussen then recruited their old friend and collaborator, Tim Frederiksen, to form a noisy trio unlike anything else on the Danish scene at the time.

In May 2017, the band self-released their EP Modern Genes digitally, on cassette, and as vacuum-sealed art prints. Later, it was also issued as a split vinyl with post-hardcore band We Are Among Storms (now EMBLA).

In 2021, the highly acclaimed debut album Stumbling Through The Walls was released through American label Nefarious Industries, which firmly cemented HIRAKI as a vital force within Denmark’s thriving underground scene for dark and heavy music.

In 2022, the songs found new life with ALTERER – Stumbling Through The Walls REWORKED, also released on Nefarious Industries – featuring ten unique reinterpretations by visionary and stylistically diverse artists. Pressed on recycled vinyl and hand-assembled by HIRAKI themselves, all profits were donated to Doctors Without Borders.

HIRAKI have played countless club and festival shows across Denmark, including Ilter Festival in Odense, SPOT Festival in Aarhus, and Store VEGA in Copenhagen during A Colossal Weekend. The band has also supported the American act The Armed in Hamburg and Berlin and toured in Norway. In recent years, HIRAKI have focused heavily on collaborative projects across genres and musical backgrounds – including vocal performances at large-scale shows with the doom-rave collective JOHN CXNNOR at Roskilde Festival and Copenhell, and most recently, a creative partnership with the Danish-Korean indie ensemble Meejah, with new music on the way.

DIEVERSITY Release New Single + Video ‘Trees of Yesterday’ from Upcoming Album

DIEVERSITY release another single from their upcoming album “IV” (release date: January 16, 2026).

“Trees Of Yesterday” literally showcases the band’s diversity. Modern metal—melodic, despite or perhaps because of the growls, spiced up with atmospheric keyboards!
It definitely sounds like it will be a catchy tune!

The album will be released on CD and colored vinyl (gatefold cover)!
Pre-sales are already underway: dieversity.epr.rocks

Digital single: save-it.cc/epr/trees-of-yesterday or directly on Spotify

Who is DIEVERSITY?
Franconia is known not only for its beers, wines, and sense of humor, but also for its outstanding heavy metal bands. One of these bands is DIEVERSITY from Würzburg. Founded over a decade ago, they forged a modern metal sound that delivers explosive power and is bursting with melody. The band name is no coincidence – diversity is the guiding principle for these creative musicians. DIEVERSITY made a strong impression with their debut album Last Day Tomorrow  and showed that modern metal doesn’t just have to come from Scandinavia. – even though Swedish influences have always played a role, as shown by the guest appearance of Björn “Speed” Strid (SOILWORK) on their follow-up album ReAwakening. A new chapter was written with the album Age Of Ignorance.   Now it’s time to turn the page again. In 2025, DIEVERSITY presents itself with a new lineup – both musically and personally refreshed. Their sound has undergone a striking transformation, shaped by modern genre heavyweights like Architects, Monuments, and Wage War. Heavier, more technical, more progressive – and yet still unmistakably DIEVERSITY.  This evolution culminates in the upcoming fourth studio album: IV, set for release in  January 2026. A statement. A new beginning. A band that doesn’t reinvent itself – but evolves. Consistently, uncompromisingly, and in tune with the times. DIEVERSITY 2025: modern metal from Franconia – as sharp-edged as ever, but with a new blade.

Tracklist:
01 – IV
02 – Piece Of Mind
03 – Blame Me
04 – Animal
05 – Gears Of Society
06 – Tyrant
07 – Trees Of Yesterday
08 – Short Fuse
09 – Free
10 – The Hunt
11 – Phantom Silhouette

The story of DIEVERSITY begins in 2010. Olav Langer and Daniel Heß founded the band, and shortly afterward, Chris Walther, Michael Steger, and drummer Dominik Waldorf joined the lineup. The musical concept was clear from the start – modern, melodic, yet aggressive metal with socially critical lyrics. In 2012, the band successfully released their debut album Last Day Tomorrow, with the title track even reaching #1 in the metal charts. Their second album ReAwakening followed in 2015. Two professionally produced videos were released for the songs Stop War Inferno and In Your Dreams. Numerous festival appearances (including Christmas Bash, Bonebreaker, and Metal Franconia) and club shows across Germany reflect the band’s growing popularity. Over the years, DIEVERSITY has shared the stage with acts such as ORDEN OGAN, DEW SCENTED, BLIND GUARDIAN, HÄMATOM, ICED EARTH, and HOLY MOSES – proof of the stylistic range that the Franconians bring to the table. Lineup: At the end of 2021, the third album Age Of Ignorance was released. High-quality music videos accompanied the singles End Of The Line, The Bitter Taste Of Sin, and Clouds Of Misery. The current lineup is completed by vocalist Robin Mattner. Recently, Max Sommerlad has joined as the new bassist. While the band has decided to move forward without a permanent keyboard player, they will continue to incorporate modern sounds and electronic elements – synthesizers and programmed arrangements remain an essential part of their style. With their upcoming fourth studio album IV, scheduled for release in early 2026, DIEVERSITY is set to write the next chapters of their band history.

February 14, 2026 Sputnik Metal Night IV – Münster

COLTAINE Unleash New Video for ‘Mogila’

Post-metal outfit COLTAINE has released a new music video for ‘Mogila’, a track from their 2025 album ‘Brandung’ (Lay Bare Recordings).

Edited by Natascha Stogu, the video brings out the band’s blend of quiet, atmospheric moments and heavier, more forceful shifts. Watch the video here:

Formed amid the misty forests of southern Germany in 2022, COLTAINE have quickly carved a unique space within the post-metal landscape. Their latest album ‘Brandung’ (out now via Lay Bare Recordings) expands on the ethereal melancholy of their debut ‘Forgotten Ways’, blending acoustic introspection with seismic surges of electric catharsis. Across its nine interconnected tracks, vocalist Julia Frasch and her bandmates summon tides of longing and transcendence – a sonic ebb and flow that feels at once fragile and immense.

With ‘Brandung’, COLTAINE reaffirm their commitment to atmosphere and emotional depth – qualities that will find their fullest expression on stage this winter. Sharing the bill with FAETOOTH, whose hazy yet heavy blend of doom and sludge has earned them a dedicated cult following, the pairing promises an evening of both raw power and haunting beauty.

COLTAINE will take their new material on the road in early 2026 as main support for FAETOOTH on a sweeping EU and UK tour. Kicking off January 22nd in Berlin, the run brings both bands to an intimate circuit of venues where their emotionally charged performances can fully envelop audiences.
