With over 700 pages, photos, and more than 100 interviews, this genre-defining work by Ari Elo, Jukka Kittilä, and Juuso Määttänen captures the journey of Finnish metal from swampy obscurity to global recognition.
Opening with a reimagining of Finland’s most iconic literary phrase—“Suo, kuokka ja Jussi” from Väinö Linna—the book reframes the national mythos with a metal twist: “In the beginning, there was swamp, hoe, and a flamethrower guitar.”
That flamethrower belonged to Kimmo Kuusniemi, founder of Sarcofagus, Finland’s first heavy metal band and a central figure in the book’s beginning.
