WITHERFALL Release New Video And Single ‘Vintage’, in Memory of Late Drummer Adam Sagan

WITHERFALL have issued:

On 6 December 2016 our friend and original Witherfall Drummer Adam Sagan, (Circle II Circle, Into Eternity) passed away at 36 after a hard fought battle with Lymphoma. Along with many that knew Adam, Jake and I were beside ourselves with Grief. Vintage was inspired by the Wine bar that nestled itself much to conveniently near the studio at which we wrote. We had a photo shoot scheduled and Adam was set to get on a plane to LA from his home in Minnesota, but having massive pains in his midsection was diverted to a hospital. He missed the plane and soon we received a call from him revealing his cancer diagnosis. That is the reason there are no band photos of the original lineup. Jake and i looking to drown our despair in a few bottles of wine, made our way to “Vintage”. We sat for hours talking about Adam and what may lie ahead. The first lines in the song “A solitary light, not a soul around us” are quite literal. As we sat outside at our table with a single candle adding the atmosphere we watched the people passing by and contemplated the future.

Moving on to 2024, Witherfall as a live band was becoming very formidable. We decided to start taking tour offers and thus embarked on our first headline tour of Europe (after an epic stint supporting Angra). We were so taken aback by the outpouring of love for our music. You were all there singing along to every word. Screaming back every molody. Humming every Riff. We had a blast tearing through over an 75 minutes of music including both new and older songs in our discog. The highlight every night however was “VINTAGE”. This song obviouosly touched the fans as much as it affected ourselves. People were literally crying at the finale of the song. “Travel On My Friend”… We dedicated the song to Adam Every night.

Over the years we have received many fan letters,emails and correspondance detailing how this song helped them with their own loss. So on this 8th anniversary of the passing of Adam, we decided to let some of the fans have their own tribute in the form of a redux video. We hope you all have a blessed holiday and remember life is short.

WITHERFALL To Release “A Prelude to Sorrow” On November 2nd

US dark melodic metal masters WITHERFALL will release the highly anticipated follow-up to 2017’s “Nocturnes and Requiems”, “A Prelude to Sorrow” on November 2nd, 2018. The band reveals more details about this stunning new offering:

“A Prelude To Sorrow is a concept record, though not in the sense that most people have come to know the form. Ours is not a story where each song acts as a chapter. The inspiration lays in the supremely dark reality that was the passing of our drummer and one of our best friends Adam Sagan. These songs are raw emotional reflections, composed in the witching hours under the influence of wine and sorrow, while watching and helping our friend fight and ultimately lose his battle with Lymphoma. Nocturnes and Requiems was dedicated to Adam after the fact. A Prelude to Sorrow is written specifically about his and our personal tragedy. Like Nocturnes and Requiems the songs have been arranged to still have the peaks and valleys that any great record should. With “Prelude” these peaks just might be a little steeper and the valleys might be a little deeper, alternating between violence and beauty. The titles initials are an acronym for “Adam Paul Sagan”, He came up with Nocturnes and Requiems so we suppose it is kind of fitting that he also inspired this title. Hope he doesn’t come knocking on our door for royalties. We hope that this will be a fitting requiem for our friend and talented musician.”

Given its tragic background, main songwriters Joseph Michael (vocals, Sanctuary – live) and Jake Dreyer (guitars, Iced Earth) succeeded in perfectly combining the group’s technical proficiency with an appropriate eerie and somber atmosphere, manifesting also in Kristian Wåhlin’s majestic cover painting. For mix and mastering, WITHERFALL again worked with Chris “Zeuss” Harris (Sanctuary, Queensryche, Iced Earth).

US dark melodic metal shooting starts WITHERFALL have completely their line up for live activities. After the tragic demise of founding member Adam Sagan, who passed away right before WITHERFALL‘s debut album “Nocturnes And Requiems” was ready for release, WITHERFALL have taken a well-deserved break of some few months for drumming auditions, finding a replacement for Adam in the highly talented Steve Bolognese, who by strange coincidence replaced Adam Sagan after his departure from the Canadian progressive power/death metal heroes Into Eternity.

“This is indeed a bitter sweet statement to announce, on one end we are happy to have found a replacement for our late drummer Adam Sagan. On the other side of the coin, we had to find a replacement for Adam. We went through a long period of searching for the right drummer to carry on Adam’s contributions to Witherfall. With Steve Bolognese we knew from our first rehearsal and assorted meetings that he was the right fit. Not only does Steve pay respect to the drum parts that Adam recorded on “Nocturnes and Requiems”. Steve also shares with Adam an impressive writing ability when it comes to composing his drum parts while we are in the pre-production stages for the follow to “Nocturnes and Requiems”. We have also been putting in grueling hours getting our live show dialed in. Expect Witherfall touring announcements very soon.” – Witherfall

“I am excited to announce that I have recently joined Century Media Recording Artist Witherfall. As happy as I am to be part of such an incredible band, there are tragic circumstances surrounding the situation, as many may know. Original Witherfall drummer Adam Sagan was a friend of mine. Adam was the original drummer and passed away last year during the final stages of production. Sagan and I both played drums with Into Eternity as well as sharing a lot of the same friends, including Jake and Joseph. Adam would come out to see Into Eternity play every time we came through Minnesota. He remained a great friend. Witherfall was Adam’s band along with Jake and Joseph. They formed it. I am going to do my best to carry on with it the way Adam would have wanted. Adam Sagan was an amazing talent and he didn’t make “Nocturnes and Requiems” an easy record to learn to play on drums, but I am going to do my best. Adam Sagan is truly missed by all. WITHERFALL has issued the last interview that their drummer Adam Sagan gave before passing away in Decemeber.

The band would like all to know the following, “Nocturnes And Requiems” is dedicated to the life of Adam Sagan who passed on December 7, 2016 during the final stages of production.

“This, as we know, is the last piece of work that Adam contributed and played on. Adams talent, passion and personality is woven throughout every part of this record as he was easily 1/3 of the creative force. “Nocturnes and Requiems” was a name that Adam eerily came up with one evening when we were figuring out album titles would not have sounded the way it does now without his immense contribution on and off the drums. Adam, we love you and it’s a tragedy that you were not able to see this release. You will always and forever be a member of Witherfall. Rest In Peace man.”

1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members 

JOSEPH MICHAEL: Witherfall is a Dark Melodic Metal band based out of Los Angeles. Our Drummer Adam Sagan who just recently passed away from complications of Lymphoma was living in Minneapolis. Jake Dreyer and I met playing for a NWOBHM artist on Earache Records. We had great chemistry during live shows as well as hanging out talking about music theory and other musical nuances that get left out of the normal “Heavy Metal” conversations.

2. What’s the origin of the bands name? 

ADAM SAGAN: We had a different name early on, and the band wasn’t entirely on the same page in that regard. For legal reasons we actually had to drop it, which worked out perfectly in the end.

JOSEPH MICHAEL: Yeah, Adam hated the original name… One night Jake and I were texting and passing back and forth names. Wither is one of my favorite words. I believe Jake added the Fall and I think it took a few days for me to embrace it. The name reflects the fact that life is very fragile and everything is in a constant state of Wither and falling.

JAKE DREYER: The Other name was Midnight Silhouette, which Joseph and I liked but Adam hated it. Though someone else  thought it was a good name before we did so we had to give it up. WHITE EMPRESS drummer Adam Sagan, who also performed with CIRCLE II CIRCLE, INTO ETERNITY and WITHERFALL, has lost his battle with blood cancer (T-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma), issued Bravewords. He was only 36 years old. His bandmates, past and present, have posted tributes and farewells to their fallen friend.

White Empress: “My friends, we have some very very sad news. Our drummer Adam Sagan has passed away today after battling with cancer for over a year. We are saddened beyond belief and no words can describe the feeling in the band right now. He was and still is an integral part of White Empress. Our hearts go out to his family and friends. He was a god on the drums and will always continue to be.”

Into Eternity: “With heavy hearts we say farewell to our long time friend and bandmate Adam Sagan. We have lost another brother to the scourge of cancer. Adam was far to young but brave beyond his years. We will miss you Adam and we will never forget the countless stages we shared and miles we traveled. Our hearts go out to your brothers and to your family. May you finally have found peace.”

Stu Block (Iced Earth, Into Eternity): “Got off stage tonight and found out horrible news of the passing of a close brother. R.I.P Adam Sagan. So many tears will fall but your memory will rise and live forever in our hearts and minds. My heart goes out to Nate Sagan and Gordo Sagan and the whole family. I love you very much my brother. You are dining with the gods in Valhalla now. See you when it is my time, brother!”

Steve Smyth (Testament, Nevermore): “Adam Sagan, first time I met you was when I was out with Nevermore on the Enemies Of Reality tour back in 2003 (though I’m convinced it was earlier than that!), great dude you were then, and always will I remember you as! Two years later, we toured together on This Godless Tour, and got to hang a bit more on that one. Always a kind word, always a positive attitude, ready to help if you could. The world has lost a good soul, I lost a good friend, and music has lost an awesome talent. Rest In Peace, until we meet again. My deepest condolences to your family and friends.”

Bill Hudson (Circle II Circle): “I can’t believe I’m typing this… but I just lost another close friend. I heard it earlier but refused to believe it until his brothers posted it: Adam Sagan has just lost his battle with cancer. I swear I talked to him two weeks ago he was okay! He was almost done with chemo.

We started playing together in 2008 and in 2012 he was hired as the drummer for CIRCLE II CIRCLE and we toured the entire world together, from Dubai to all of Europe to Sao Paulo and the U.S. There’s more memories than I care to try and process right now. What the fuck. We lived together for a few months in 2009. Last we talked, he was ready to start playing again. I can’t believe this is happening.

I’ll leave you with one of my favorite memories: Him speaking Portuguese to the audience at our show in my hometown of Sao Paulo, Brazil in 2013. I’m gonna miss this guy…”

Sagan‘s brother, Nate, has also posted a message on Facebook:

“I want to thank everyone who helped support Adam Sagan and our family during his battle with cancer. Today his epic and relentless fight is coming to an end. Nobody has ever touched more people than my brother and he will be missed, but certainly not forgotten. Thank you all for the love and support. Stay strong, Adam would have wanted it that way.”

Professionally filmed video footage of CIRCLE II CIRCLE‘s entire performance at this year’s Wacken Open Air festival, which took place August 2-4 in Wacken, Germany, can be seen at this location.

The band, led by ex-SAVATAGE vocalist Zak Stevens, is currently touring Europe in celebration of the 15 years of the SAVATAGE classic album “The Wake Of Magellan”.

CIRCLE II CIRCLE recently recruited drummer Adam Sagan (INTO ETERNITY, FINAL DARKNESS, ECHOTERRA) to sit behind the kit for the European trek.

A drummer of 20 years, Sagan has toured extensively and shared stages with some of the biggest names in rock and metal, including MOTÖRHEAD, CANNIBAL CORPSE, GWAR, STRATOVARIUS, OPETH, DANZIG, KAMELOT and dozens more. In addition to touring and recording, he also pens an instructional column for Drumhead magazine, and offers private drum instruction in the Minneapolis/St Paul area of Minnesota.
