Jimmy Kay from Canada’s The Metal Voice sat down with Canadian icon Aldo Nova at this years M3 Rock Festival 2024 on May 4, 2024.
In the chat Aldo Nova talked about new music he is working on; how he set the blueprint for 80’s guitar rock and touched upon Jon Bon Jovi’s new documentary.
When asked about if he was working on new music he replied,” What I am doing now is I’m working on songs for my next album which will be pretty much like my first album, it’ll just be like my debut album one hit after the other but with one consistent theme. I’ve done about six songs and there will be 15 songs on it. Some Killers songs. Some songs will sound more closer to Ramstein. It’s Ramstein meets Aldo Nova. Me and my wife’s favorite band is Ramstein. It’s like Ramstein 24/7 at my house.”
Aldo Nova is a Canadian hard rock guitarist, keyboardist, vocalist, and producer. He gained recognition with his 1982 debut album Aldo Nova, which peaked at Billboard’s number 8 position, and its accompanying single, “Fantasy”, which reached number 23 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and boosted sales for its parent album.
Nova’s second album Subject ( Certified Gold by the RIAA ) 1983, had two singles: “Monkey on Your Back” and “Always Be Mine”. His third album Twitch from 1985, had two singles: “Rumours of You” and “Tonite (Lift Me Up)”
He won a Grammy Award for Album of the Year as co-producer of Celine Dion’s 1996 album Falling into You
In 2008 Nova embarked on a 14-year journey to create his rock opera “The Life And Times Of Eddie Gage”
Canada’s The Metal Voice on New Year’s Eve Dec 31 2020 spoke to guitarist Michael Gilbert of Flotsam and Jetsam, legendary drummer Carmine Appice, Aldo Nova and singer of Sword’s Rick Hughes in special New Years Special
Flotsam and Jetsam’s Michael GilbertTell us about the upcoming new studio album by Flotsam and Jetsam “The new Flotsam and Jetsam album was supposed to come out in January 2021 that was what the plan was, so the album is pretty much done. Everything is done, completed, except for the artwork as and it is now pushed to June 2021. So we stopped doing the white knuckle recording and started taking our time with the mixes. I think we are going to be releasing a lyric video pretty soon for the first single, maybe February March 2021. ”
Tell us about the musical direction “This is the perfect follow-up to The End of Chaos (last album). We could not have planned it any better. It ended up coming out like The End of Chaos on steroids basically you are going to love it. The musical direction is going to be brutal for a Flotsam record, it’s a step above Chaos for sure. ”
Carmine AppiceTell us what projects are you working on in 2021 “I got a new Cactus album coming out, I’m working on a new instrumental album, then all my drum instructional books (eight of them) are being re-released in 2021 coming out on Modern Drummer publications. Also my brother Vinny and I have been talking about a new album and we got some half done demos and Jim Crean is singing on it but it’s hard to get Vinny motivated.”
Tell us about the passing of your friend Leslie West “I knew him the longest of anyone in the business. Leslie was an amazing player, funny guy and had a real dark crazy sense of humour. I have known his since 1963, I was in an R and B funk band, with horns everything and we played the same club opposite from each other, half on half off. Then I played with Leslie in 1975, it was me Mick Jones who ended up being in Foreigner, Kenny Arniston and Lesie what a great band it was. We did Mississippi Queen and there is a video on Youtube if you want to see.”
Aldo NovaTell us about your new studio release The life and times of Eddie Gage “Eddie Gage is a Rock Opera with 27 songs and is on hold. I was going to put it out but I am now putting out an E.P. (from the album) probably March or April 2021. I am in the process of doing a mini Documentary on how the new studio album was done and put together. Also I am uploading New Youtube video performances on Aldo Nova channel of my classic songs check them out they are smokin.”
Sword’s Rick HughesTell us about the Musical direction of the New Sword album on Combat Records “The reaction to the new single In Kommad has been amazing. What I like the most about Sword’s latest project is that every song is so totally different from one track to another. The song In Kommad is the thrasher song of the album. Then you will get a song which will remind you of the early days of Black Sabbath, with a bit of Dio and a bit of Ozzy and some Motorhead. The first song is just the tip of the Iceberg and I really mean it. I know everyone is anxious to hear the album but the Pandemic has all our plans struck down, everything was ready to go and tour with the big boys in the USA so we have to wait.”
ALDO NOVA announces his new band lineup which features, Aldo Nova, guitars and vocals, Jack Frost, (ex-Seven Witches-Savatage) guitars and vocals, (ex-Stryper, Of Gods and Monsters and Stormer), bass and vocals, Billy Carmassi (Aldo Nova band 1982 to 2020-Jet Red and brother of Denny Carmassi) on drums and a keyboard player, whose name cannot be disclosed yet but he also has an amazing pedigree, extremely well know and is a monster player, when they begin touring as soon as the lockdowns are lifted due to COVID permit it and things get back to normal.
In Aldo’s words, “Between me, Tim Gaines and Billy Carmassi, we were already quite a unit, but when Jack joined the band, it was as if he was the detonator that made us an Atomic Bomb of a band.” He also says that “When Jack joined the band, I felt a completely new energy, and when Billy and Tim met him digitally, they both agreed that he was our guy and we’re eager to go out and literally destroy, which is the mindset that we, as a band, have when we will play live.”
Nova also announced his plans to do a large full-scale production virtual live show in 2021, and when he says large scale production, he means a full lighting rig over a large stage with one of the leading lighting designers in Canada, Pierre E. Roy, with video directed and edited by Christian Jacques who did Aldo’s videos for, “I’m a Survivor”, “When All is Said and Done” and his “Monkey on Your Back, live band-Livestream COVID 19 session.
Nova doesn’t really think that the drive-in shows that everybody claims to be the only way to play live is a good thing for his fans. In his words, “Who wants to go see a band with 5 people crammed in a car listening to the show on their FM radios and not being able to see anything is certainly not the solution, nor the future of Rock. Anyway, I’m from Canada where the winters are brutal so it’ll never work in Canada, nor will it work in the Northern States, so half of your fans can’t see you play when you’re on tour.
Nova plans on doing his virtual live show doing a 3 and ½ hour set playing his albums in their entirety and in the sequence of the album, so as he says, “While most bands play their shows then walk off without playing their hits and waiting for the audience to cheer and clap till they come back to do their hit, which he calls the “cheap shot”, he does things in an entirely different way because as he says, “We on the other hand, we’ll start the show with “Fantasy“ because it’s the first track on side one of the first album.”. He intends to play songs from all his albums, even 6 songs from his rare and obscure instrumental album, “Nova’s Dream” which is considered to be one of his best albums and ending finally with his new Rock Opera, “The Life and Times of Eddie Gage,”
Also, his virtual show is modeled after Dana White’s UFC fight cards, which is, you pay one price of admission and you can have as many people watching it as you want, as he puts it, “Turn it into a party or a family night, sitting in front of your big screen T.V. with the sound system as loud as you want with everybody having a front-row seat, get a beer, play air guitar, dance, and jokingly he says when we play “Ball and Chain,” you can even make out.
Watch out because 2021 is going to be a year full of surprises with new cutting edge ways to entertain fans from Aldo Nova.
ALDO NOVA has always been an innovator. A creator of music that’s refused to conform to trends or norms. Like all true artists, he takes risks, pushing the boundaries wherever possible.
Today in 2020, Aldo Nova continues to innovate releasing his new single, “Hey Ladi Dadi” on all the digital outlets now.
In his own words, he describes the song “Hey Ladi Dadi” as” Almost heavy metal but with a hook that’ll have you shaking your head and stomping your feet at the same time”
The song is taken from his 23 song, 1 hour and 53 minute long Rock Opera titled “The Life and Times of Eddie Gage” due out in May of 2021.
Nova decided in 2008 not to write, produce, or do anything for anyone else but himself and chose to pursue his vision of writing and creating a Rock Opera which, from its inception, was called “The Life and Times of Eddie Gage”
He wrote his first song for it on February 8th, 2008 called “Go On” and continued to write and produce the initial 8 songs that started the project rolling. All 8 of these songs appear in its final form which was finished 12 years later on May 12th of 2020 that also consist of songs written in 2011, 2013, 2015, and the bulk of the album being written in 2019.
In the Rock Opera, he plays all the different characters. Morphing his voice with each different song.
Born Aldo Caporuscio on November 13, 1956, in Montreal, he speaks fluent English, French and Italian, which gives you an idea of his varied talents. Oh, and Aldo is a successful songwriter, vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, producer, arranger, and studio engineer. Talk about a master of all trades.
Influenced by Jimi Hendrix, he got interested in playing the guitar when 13 years old.
At the age of 16, the emerging talent of the teenage Aldo Nova began to blossom when he started to play gigs in local clubs, albeit while working at a day job.
A significant break happened for him at 22 years old when his set of demos which included the songs, “Fantasy”, Fantasy Live Home Performance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6f4rT30YxCU&ab_channel=AldoNova “Heart to Heart” and “Under the Gun” captured the attention of ATV Publishing in 1981.
Now signed as a writer to ATV Publishing, Aldo Nova completed what was really a set of high-grade demos, and now things really began to happen. His recording contract was sold to Portrait Records and Tony Bongiovi was brought in to mix the tapes at his Power Station Studio in New York.
Apart from the drums, Nova played everything on that album, something that became his staple and part of his reputation as a one-man band, something which still hasn’t changed to this day as Nova played and sang everything on “The Life and Times of Eddie Gage” himself but the drums by Lee Levin and bass which were played by Dan Warner, Sylvain Bolduc and Timothy Gaines(ex- Stryper )
His 1st album sold more than two million copies in America, as it peaked at number eight on the chart. The single ‘Fantasy’ reached number 23 in the US chart. On his second album ‘Subject…Aldo Nova’ again proved brilliantly inventive. Once more, Aldo played all the instruments on the recordings except the drums. Once more he showed he was a visionary in the way he used synthesizers in a rock format. This was issued on October 13, 1983, and sold one million albums. Two years later, he put out ‘Twitch’. But then walked away from his relationship with Portrait, refusing to compromise his musical integrity for the sake of any trend that the label wanted.
In 1984 he played on the debut album from Bon Jovi, lending his credibility and guitar chops to the young Bon Jovi’s song and 1st hit “Runaway”. Five years later, Jon Bon Jovi called on him to play on his solo album, the soundtrack to “Youngs Gun 2 where Aldo played a pivotal role in the making of, even writing the main riff on Jon’s song “Blaze of Glory”. As a result, he was signed by Jon Bon Jovi to his new label Jambco, leading to the well-received ‘Blood On The Bricks’ album in 1991.
He has also been a major and constant factor in the career of Celine Dion, as a producer, musician, and writer, with Aldo has written songs for her such as “Your Light”, “Can’t Fight This Feelin’”, “You And I “and, “A Song for You” amongst many others, and also wrote for many top 10 stars including Faith Hill and Clay Aiken who all had number 1 hits with Nova’s songs.
“When Celine Dion made her comeback in 2001, Nova penned “A New Day Has Come”, a song that held the number 1 position in 26 countries for 6 months for her.
Aldo also won a Grammy Award in 1996 as a producer of the Celine Dion album “Falling Into You”, which was Album Of The Year.
In 2018, he decided to come out of the darkness to record his album 2.0 which featured turbocharged versions 6 tracks from his debut album, along with a new song called “I’m a Survivor”. It did get a mixed response. But as he says,” I realized a long time ago that whatever you put out, not everybody will like it, so I don’t stress about it.”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VOwGG4HiRHk&feature=youtu.be&ab_channel=AldoNova
Now in 2020, Aldo Nova has come charging out of the gate again with the release of his song “Hey Ladi Dadi” and nothing will hold him back anymore.
Aldo Nova has never accepted anything less than the highest standards. There are many musicians who’ve sold more records than him. But nobody – NO-ONE – can claim to have more foresight and integrity. He may have only released six albums in a 40-year career. But that’s because quality is paramount to a man who will never accept anything but the highest standards.

Join Jimmy Kay, Alan Dixon and special guest Aldo Nova as the pay tribute to legendary guitarist Eddie Van Halen. Aldo Nova gives his perspective on Eddie Van Halen as a guitarist, composer and his legacy. The Metal Voice
Jimmy Kay and Alan Dixon from Canada’s The Metal Voice recently spoke to multi-instrumentalist Aldo Nova about his new album The Life and Times of Eddy Gage. Also in the chat Aldo Nova talks about his writing credits with various bands such as Bon Jovi, Blue Oyster Cult and many more.
Tell us about the musical direction of the new album “It’s a rock opera, it’s got super rock songs, it’s got techno songs, it’s got a song with a 40 piece orchestra and my voice, it’s got a heavy duty rock songs, syth pop, gospel, rock and rap, so it’s mix of everything, every song is different. Every song is written around every character. One thing that is in common in me and my music, is that it has to draw emotion, it can’t be sterile. For me I make music out of emotion. It took 12 years to finish, twenty-three songs and two hours long.”
Tell us about the story behind the new album “The story you might as well call it is an autobiography, it might as well be called The Life and times of Aldo Nova. The story is of this young kid who plays clubs and then gets noticed by a big record company executive. Then he gets famous ( the main character) and then he goes and plays big stages, then he gets introduced to a woman by the powerful Greek record tycoon. The woman leads him down the path of drugs and he has a psychotic breakdown. It’s my life story pretty much. It ends with redemption where he is happy spreading his message of faith, hope and love which he originally wanted to do from the beginning. There are 23 songs on the album and you might have maybe 19 characters.”
How will this album be released? “There is either one plan where I release one song every two weeks to keep people involved. Also talks are in progress to bring this to a huge stage production which was my dream all along. “
Has your contribution to Bon Jovi’s debut album been played down “He is pretty cheap with credits, instead of saying Aldo Nova did this and that (referring to contributing to the album), he just said Aldo Novo appears courtesy of Portrait records and that was it. On my albums everybody gets credit.”
Since 2008, Aldo Nova has been working on an exciting and challenging new project. A rock opera called ‘The Life And Times Of Eddie Gage’. From it come the new track “When All Is Said And Done” “I wrote more than 100 songs for this and selected 23 songs for the final finished album.”
In 1984 Aldo Nova played on the debut album from Bon Jovi, lending his credibility to the young hopeful’s. Five years later, Jon Bon Jovi called on him to play a crucial role on his solo album ‘Young Guns 2,” which spawned the number 1 hit, “Blaze of Glory”.a song that Aldo entirely arranged himself, along with writing the catchy intro phrase. The album “Young Guns 2” came out in 1990, and Aldo’s input was a major factor in its success. As a result, he was signed by Jon Bon Jovi to his new label Jambco, leading to the well-received ‘Blood On The Bricks’ album in 1991.
Aldo has also been a major and constant factor in the career of Celine Dion, as a producer, musician, and writer. “I started working with her when she was 13 years old.” During his long collaborations with her, Aldo has written songs such as “A New Day Has Come, which was number 1 in 26 countries for six months,” ‘Your Light,” ‘I Can’t Fight This Feelin” and ‘You And I” amongst many others. Aldo also won a Grammy Award in 1996 as a producer of the Celine Dion album ‘Falling Into You’, which was Album Of The Year.
