On February 7th, AYREON launched a contest on Facebook, for all ”creative Ayreonauts who like making music videos”. The mission was to make a video for ‘The Source Will Flow’, the third instant grat track from “The Source”, the exciting new chapter in the AYREON saga. Now the four best vide’s are revealed.
Arjen Lucassen elaborates: “About a month ago we asked the fans to make a video for the atmospheric track ‘The Source Will Flow’ from the new Ayreon album, and we received positive reactions from over a hundred applicants. We chose the best artists and they sent us four excellent videos! We felt it would be a great idea to have the fans choose the winner. So please check them out and vote for your favorite video, I’m very curious! And of course… I hope you enjoy the music as well :-)”
Until March 30th, viewers can decide which video they like best, by voting on Arjen’s website, at http://www.arjenlucassen.com/ay8/video-contest. The video that garners the most votes by the end of March, will be declared the winner. The winning video will be the featured video on the Ayreon YouTube channel, as well as being a native upload on the Ayreon Facebookpage, and the winner will receive a fantastic Ayreon bundle. The three other finalists will get a special package of Ayreon goodies as well.
‘The Source Will Flow’ is taken from Ayreon’s forthcoming THE SOURCE album, which has contributions from renowned vocalists like James LaBrie (Dream Theater), Simone Simons (Epica), Floor Jansen (Nightwish), Hansi Kürsch (Blind Guardian), Tobias Sammet (Edguy, Avantasia), and Russell Allen (Symphony X). THE SOURCE will be released on April 28 through Ayreon’s new label Mascot Label Group/Music Theories Recordings

Just recently Metal Shock Finland interviewed AYREON mastermind Arjen Lucassen, in case you missed it, check it out at this location.
While highly acclaimed AYREON with their mastermind ARJEN LUCASSEN’s ‘Forever/Planet Y’ saga seemed to have reached its conclusion with the album “01011001”, it’s clear that ARJEN LUCASSEN’s creative muses had other plans. The new AYREON album “The Source” revisits the “Forever” saga, adding a whole new chapter to Lucassen’s impressive body of work. With its top-flight cast of singers and musicians, compelling songs, overwhelming sound, and intriguing story, “The Source” offers everything that has gained Lucassen dedicated fans worldwide since he laid the foundations of AYREON back in the mid 90’s.
Last time Metal Shock Finland talked with Arjen Lucassen in 2014, for the “Theory of Everything” album, and just a couple of days ago, Tarja Virmakari had a huge honor to interview Arjen again, talking this time about his new masterpiece “The Source”, in detail, which comes out on april 28th via Mascot Label group/Music Theories Recordings. Arjen revealed also some details about AYREON‘s three special shows, taking place on September 15th, 16th and 17th at Poppodium 013 in Tilburg, Netherlands. To know more about “The Source” and else, please join the chat below. Enjoy!
The international status of AYREON enables ARJEN LUCASSEN to write his characters with some of the most respected singers in rock in mind. The special guests of “The Source” are: James LaBrie (Dream Theater), Tommy Giles Rogers (Between the Buried and Me), Simone Simons (Epica), Mike Mills (Toehider), Floor Jansen (Nightwish), Hansi Kürsch (Blind Guardian), Michael Eriksen (Circus Maximus), Tobias Sammet (Edguy, Avantasia), Nils K. Rue (Pagan’s Mind), Zaher Zorgati (Myrath), Tommy Karevik (Kamelot) and Russell Allen (Symphony X). Special contributions were offered by guitarists Paul Gilbert (Mr. Big), Guthrie Govan (The Aristocrats, Asia, Steven Wilson), Marcel Coenen and keyboard player Mark Kelly (Marillion).
On February 23rd, Metal Shock Finland had a pleasure to premiere, for Finnish territory, the latest lyric video “Everybody Dies”, taken from AYREON‘s new masterpiece “The Source”, check it out below.
Metal Shock Finland‘s Tarja Virmakari commented the video: “Year after year, Arjen is regenerating the meaning of musical freedom, offering the high class experience which takes you to an enjoyable journey, again and again! It’s nearly impossible to describe the emotions with words, so join the voyage and let the tunes to guide your senses!”
“The Source” album saw Lucassen’s creative process take an unusual twist. Normally, finding and assembling the album artwork comes very late in the process, long after the music is finished. But to gain inspiration he began looking for artwork very early on, after writing just the first few songs.
“While Googling I found the website of the French artist Yann Souetre. Right from the start I was fascinated by his imagery. It was industrial and futuristic at the same time. I was particularly captivated and inspired by a portrait of a woman under water, hooked up to various tubes. Not long after that I had an overall theme, a story line, and a visual aesthetic for the album. I contacted Yann, and after we agreed that his artwork would be available for the album, I continued composing songs with confidence and a clear vision.”
2017 will be a particularly exciting year for Ayreon fans thanks to a unique chance to actually see Ayreon live. Limited to three exclusive performances, “The Ayreon Universe” will take place in September (15th, 16th and 17th at Poppodium 013 in Tilburg, Netherlands). This unprecedented live event features the best of twenty years of Ayreon music, brought to life by a top cast of musicians such as Floor Jansen (Nightwish), Russell Allen (Symphony X), Damian Wilson (Threshold), Hansi Kürsch (Blind Guardian), Tommy Karevik (Kamelot), Jonas Renkse (Katatonia), Anneke van Giersbergen and various others. The reclusive Arjen Lucassen himself is also expected to make a rare appearance on stage. The tickets for all concerts – 9000 in total – sold out within a day, proving once again that the Ayreon magic is still very much alive and kicking.

“Whenever I start something new, I usually have a solo album in mind”, Arjen Lucassen explains. “It gives me the freedom to go any direction I want. All options are still open, with regards to sound and style. This time around I initially felt that a new Star One album was appearing on the horizon because the guitars were so dominant. But after the first flutes and violins showed up, I realized I had a new Ayreon album in the making.”
This album saw Lucassen’s creative process take an unusual twist. Normally, finding and assembling the album artwork comes very late in the process, long after the music is finished. But to gain inspiration he began looking for artwork very early on, after writing just the first few songs.

2017 will be a particularly exciting year for Ayreon fans thanks to a unique chance to actually see Ayreon live. Limited to three exclusive performances, “The Ayreon Universe” will take place in September in the prestigious 013 venue in Tilburg, Holland. The tickets for all concerts – 9000 in total – sold out within a day, proving once again that the Ayreon magic is still very much alive and kicking.
The Source is the first Ayreon album to be released by the renowned Dutch record company Mascot Label Group/Music Theories Recordings, which could be considered a new beginning for all things Ayreon. “Let me start by saying that I always make every effort to create the best Ayreon album possible. This time was no exception. I really wanted to deliver the goods, and I hope I did! I’ve got a very good feeling about it, mainly because of the way everything seemed to fall easily into place with this album. I’ve only experienced that twice before, with Into The Electric Castle and The Human Equation. The music, the story, the artwork and most of all the fantastic guest musicians just came together very naturally.”
The Story of “The Source” is set six billion years in the past relative to Earth. It begins on Planet Alpha, a world in the Andromeda system where computer intelligence has far surpassed that of humanity. Alpha is facing a massive global crisis, with ecological and political catastrophes threatening all human life. The Alphans (our human ancestors) try to save their planet by entrusting the global computer mainframe—The ‘Frame—to find a solution. Given total control of the planet, the ‘Frame reaches the logical conclusion that its creators are the cause of all the trouble. The only way to solve Alpha’s problems is to exterminate humanity. This leaves the Alphans no other option than to try and escape their horrific fate. But their escape comes at a terrible price.
“The most dramatic segment on the album is the song Condemned To Live. There is just one ship that is capable of making the journey to a new planet, and it can only carry a handful of people. So only those who have essential skills or other useful qualities are allowed to join. All the others have to stay behind. Those who are allowed to leave are, as the title goes, “Condemned To Live”, as they must wrestle with the unimaginable anguish of leaving their families—and the entire Alphan civilization—behind to certain doom.
It’s the beginning of a story that contains everything that has made the Ayreon epics so endlessly fascinating all these years. First there are the musical riches, then there is the layered story line. It can all be interpreted as strict science fiction, but Arjen Lucassen doesn’t shy away from making references to actual events.
“I usually get inspired by scientific documentaries and facts. Just recently I heard that by around the year 2050, artificial intelligence will have surpassed human intellectual capacities, the ‘Technical Singularity’. What will the consequences be for humanity? I spend a lot of time thinking and philosophizing about this fascinating subject, and sooner or later some of these musings usually find their way onto my albums. Of course, everything is a product of my imagination, but at the same time I’d like to think that my stories could actually happen, at least theoretically!”
Arjen Lucassen strives to make every AYREON album a contrast to the one before. “If The Theory of Everything was my prog album, then The Source is my rock album. It’s more guitar oriented, which makes it heavier than previous Ayreon releases. The Source is also more ‘accessible’ than The Theory of Everything: the songs are structured more conventionally, and the melodies are catchier.”
The title of “The Source” invites various interpretations. It’s a reference to water—the source of life—and the water planet where the escaping Alphans find a safe new home after their long, arduous journey. The Source also points to the origins of humanity and the question of where we come from. The title also hints at the role that the album itself plays in the whole Ayreon catalogue. Given that it is a prequel, it can be thought of as the source of the entire Ayreon epic.
The international status of AYREON enables Arjen Lucassen to write his characters with some of the most respected singers in rock in mind: James LaBrie (Dream Theater), Tommy Giles Rogers (Between the Buried and Me), Simone Simons (Epica), Mike Mills (Toehider), Floor Jansen (Nightwish), Hansi Kürsch (Blind Guardian), Michael Eriksen (Circus Maximus), Tobias Sammet (Edguy, Avantasia), Nils K. Rue (Pagan’s Mind), Zaher Zorgati (Myrath), Tommy Karevik (Kamelot) and Russell Allen (Symphony X). Special contributions were offered by guitarists Paul Gilbert (Mr. Big), Guthrie Govan (The Aristocrats, Asia, Steven Wilson), Marcel Coenen and keyboard player Mark Kelly (Marillion).
Just as on his previous albums, The Source has Arjen Lucassen playing a wide variety of instruments, while the inimitable Ed Warby (o.a. Elegy, Gorefest, Hail Of Bullets) once again masterfully handles the drums.
“For quite a while it was a self-imposed rule to avoid inviting a singer more than once for an Ayreon. I have a very close relationship with my audience, and frequently found them wishing that this vocalist or the other could have been present on my previous album. I then realized that my self-imposed limitation was doing the fans a disservice. That’s why The Source features many vocalists who have already sung on an Ayreon album before. In fact, about half of the singers made their debut on an Ayreon album.”
The Source adds a compelling new chapter to a career that began in the mid-nineties in a cloud of doubt and uncertainty. After years of gigging and making records with Dutch hard rock bands Bodine and Vengeance, guitarist Arjen Lucassen set out to create his own rock opera—including all the bells and whistles—inspired by the works that he cherished in his younger years: The Who’s Tommy, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Jesus Christ Superstar and Jeff Wayne’s The War of The Worlds. In the post-grunge era, the audacious ambitions of the tall Dutchman were met with stony indifference by most record labels. But Lucassen persevered and eventually his debut Ayreon offering, The Final Experiment, was released and managed to reach a huge international audience. The rock opera was back!
Following the success of The Final Experiment, new Ayreon albums arrived every few years. Their musical impact was such that they all became successful in their own right, even though Lucassen—a self-proclaimed recluse—chose not to promote the albums with live shows. Instead he opted to remain safely within the walls of his private studio The Electric Castle to work long days on his musical projects. Most of his albums have appeared under his Ayreon-moniker, but he also allows himself the occasional lyrical and musical sidestep with other projects such as Ambeon, Stream of Passion, Guilt Machine, The Gentle Storm, and Star One. Whatever he’s done and whatever name he’s used, it’s all been embraced by a loyal community of international fans.
2017 will be a particularly exciting year for Ayreon fans thanks to a unique chance to actually see Ayreon live. Limited to three exclusive performances, “The Ayreon Universe” will take place in September in the prestigious 013 venue in Tilburg, Holland. AYREON mastermind Arjen Lucassen is officially working on a new AYREON album, scheduled for release in 2017, via Mascot Label Group. More news to follow!
Arjen Lucassen has issued the following message and teaser video, via his Official facebook page:
“Finally, my friends… a new Ayreon album is in the making! Here is a little teaser for you.”
Earlier this year Mascot Label Group announced the signing of AYREON, the highly acclaimed project from singer / songwriter / multi-instrumentalist / record producer Arjen Lucassen to its label Music Theories Recordings. After re-releasing the AYREON catalogue on various digital platforms in April, debut album The Final Experiment and follow-up Actual Fantasy: Revisitedwill see their first-ever vinyl release on August 26, 2016.
The Ayreon back-catalogue has been re-released before, but contrary to the rest of Ayreon’s seven studio albums, The Final Experiment and Actual Fantasy: Revisited have never been released on vinyl. Lucassen: “That makes it perfect for me. I couldn’t have wished for a better start with Mascot Label Group and Music Theories Recordings. The people at Mascot flooded me with ideas and plans for the re-releases. Which is a luxury, really! Take the artwork, for example. They offered to rework it, but wanted to show the original artwork as well. Their ideas were all really good. I’m sure the fans will appreciate this, which is one of my main goals when working on a re-release or a vinyl release. The worst thing to do is forget about quality and details, because people will turn away from you in no time.”
The Final Experiment
Ayreon’s first album was released in the Netherlands in 1995 by start-up label Transmission Records. With its intricate sci-fi/fantasy storytelling and timeless progressive rock it immediately attracted attention of rock fans all around the world. Featuring a line-up of world class vocalists and musicians, including Barry Hay (Golden Earring), Jan-Chris de Koeijer (Gorefest), and Kingdom Come’s Lenny Wolf. Ten years later Lucassen recorded semi-acoustic versions of the songs as a bonus to the CD-re-release. Those tracks are now available on vinyl as well. Lucassen: “Originally The Final Experiment was a single album, of course. To make it special for the re-release in 2005 I recorded nine of the songs acoustically, but with completely different singers and arrangements. I like some of the tracks even better this way. It’s so great to have both these versions on vinyl now.”
Lucassen mentions The Final Experiment as the most emotional recording he has made: “I was very limited when I recorded The Final Experiment. I had no studio of my own and no equipment, nothing at all, basically. I was totally dependent on the studio where I recorded. Plus I had no money to hire any fancy singers or musicians yet, which means that most of the singers you hear are all friends of mine. People that I played or interacted with in the years before Ayreon, when I was playing with Vengeance. The Final Experiment embodies something I wanted to do all my life, ever since I heard Tommy of The Who, Jesus Christ Superstar, War of the Worlds by Jeff Wayne… I just had to do a rock opera! And in that respect, yes, it is a good album to start your Ayreon trip with.”
Lucassen is particularly fond of Sail Away to Avalon. As a kid I already was a huge Golden Earring fan. And to have Barry Hay sing on it, in exchange for a bottle of whisky… Now I’m used to working with famous people, but at that time I was extremely nervous when Barry came to the studio! Then there is Eyes Of Time, my attempt at doing a Led Zeppelin, Kashmir kind of song. And sure, I would have loved to have Robert Plant sing on it, but that was not going to happen, haha… So that’s when I thought of Kingdom Come, a band that I really liked a lot and that sounded very much like Led Zeppelin. I approached them and asked if Lenny Wolf would like to come and sing on Eyes Of Time. To my surprise he said yes!”
Actual Fantasy
After The Final Experiment, second Ayreon album Actual Fantasy (also on Transmission, 1996), turned out to be a relatively modest production. In 2004 it got a complete makeover, resulting in Actual Fantasy: Revisited. Lucassen recalls: “The Final Experiment sold very well and I earned enough money to start building my own studio around 1995, 1996. It was all ADAT recorders back then. Digital, but on tape. I think I had about eight of them. A complicated way of recording… My idea this time was to create an album with John Bonham-style drum parts , lots of electronics and synths in the spirit of Tangerine Dream and Klaus Schulze and heavy guitars on top. For budget reasons I recorded with computer drums, and digital synths instead of the nice analog synths I have nowadays. At that time I didn’t give a shit about what people would think of the album I was making. That became different with my next Ayreon album Into The Electric Castle. I remember thinking then: ‘Okay, what would people want to hear, how can I please them?’ And I never thought that with Actual Fantasy, I was pretty cocky at the time .”
Actual Fantasy contrasts in many ways with The Final Experiment. It’s not a rock opera, and there are only three singers present. Lucassen: “Firstly my good friend Robert Soeterboek. Then there is Edward Reekers, the singer with Kayak, whose parts worked out so well that I had asked him for Into The Electric Castle and Universal Migrator too. Seems he is unable to sing out of tune and his English pronunciation is perfect – very important to me. The third singer was Okkie Huijsdens, who sadly passed away. He could sing the best Beatles-style vocal parts you can imagine, and that was exactly what I was looking for. I wanted to use the vocals more as instruments than just standard vocals. Layers of vocals, beautiful harmonies: Okkie delivered.”
Asked for his dearest tracks on Actual Fantasy, Lucassen does not hesitate: “The first track after the intro, Abbey Of Synn, was already my favourite when I recorded it. That Led Zeppelin feel again, drum parts sort of like When The Levee Breaks, that was my idea. But then with electronic sequencers and heavy guitars. Computer Eyes is the track that I think stands out for the fans. I also did it live a couple of times, with Stream Of Passion… Edward Reekers did an amazing job on that. The Tangerine Dream feel, mixed with lots of melody and some heavy rock , that’s what I like so much about it.”
When Lucassen revisited the songs of Actual Fantasy in 2004, he didn’t decide on recording acoustic bonus tracks like with The Final Experiment. “I decided to re-record all the stuff I wasn’t happy with. Ed Warby played the drum parts, for starters. Peter Vink completely revised the bass parts. I redid most of the guitar parts because I had better equipment. So I added stuff to the tracks but took stuff away as well.”
