In an interview with the Czech Project Backstage, Max and Igor “Iggor” Cavalera talked about the revival of their early Sepultura works through their project Cavalera. While they continue to release new material under Cavalera Conspiracy, they have decided to re-record Sepultura’s early work under the Cavalera name. The goal? To honor their musical past while maintaining the energy and spirit of the original Sepultura.
In the interview, Igor explains:
“It can be a bit confusing for newcomers. With Cavalera Conspiracy, Max and I write completely new songs. Under Cavalera, however, we re-record older works and perform them live. So, it’s two sides of the same project, but with different focuses.”
“At the end of the day, it’s about the music that Max and I have made since the early days of Sepultura. Cavalera represents the essence of our shared history. There are some differences between the projects, such as the re-recordings with Cavalera and the creation of new music with Cavalera Conspiracy, but at its core, they remain the same project,” he adds.
Max also emphasized the importance of the original Sepultura spirit:
“Everything comes from the same root. The same spirit we had back then is still here today. And the most important thing – and I think the fans feel this – is that the spirit of the original Sepultura is also present in Cavalera. People wanted to feel that essence, and that’s what we’re achieving with these re-recordings. With Cavalera Conspiracy, we’re creating new music, which we will continue to do, but with Cavalera, we can perform the classic Sepultura material live.”
Despite the name change, the Cavalera brothers still see themselves as the keepers of the legacy they built decades ago with Sepultura. After the classic lineup dissolved in 1996, Max left the band, and Igor followed later in 2006. The brothers reunited in 2007 under the name Cavalera Conspiracy. With both projects, they aim to keep the original spirit of the band alive.
“We plan to keep going for a long time. None of us are thinking about retirement. We’re musicians, we’re rockers – life artists, as they say,” Max concludes.
CAVALERA has become synonymous with extreme metal music, a name that to this day still holds the highest regard, a family legacy built upon decades of musical aggression. In 2023, Max and Iggor Cavalera achieved what some would say was an impossible feat; they revisited their earliest releases, Morbid Visions, and Bestial Devastation, and re-recorded them with bone-breaking intensity. A risk that few would dare to even attempt, yet they artfully and prolifically attained their trademark raw sound by means that could only be described as magic or time travel.
Today, the band releases the final chapter of their early-days trilogy, Schizophrenia. The iconic album in terms of early thrash and death metal, is a household name for those of us invested in extreme metal. It was the point where the Cavaleras refined their dark, dingy, speed-influenced songs, into something a bit more mature, developed, and technical.
In celebration of the release, the band offer fans a fresh new single , ‘Nightmares Of Delirium‘. The song is a bonus to the landmark 1987 album and features lyrics from Max’s son Igor Amadeus Cavalera.
Max Cavalera states, “Schizophrenia has been locked away in a mental asylum for nearly 37 years. I’m very proud to bring it into the future with a modern sound without losing its old-school mentality. Complete with a new bonus track, ‘Nightmares of Delirium’, created especially for this album. Thrash till death!”
Iggor Cavalera comments, “Hello head bangers… can’t wait for you all to hear our re recorded version of Schizophrenia. It’s a labor of sweat and love… see you in the pit”

With the impressive catalog that the CAVALERA brothers have created over the years, you will soon see that Schizophrenia will also sit amongst their greatest achievements. Max and Iggor have relinquished an album that for many years was locked away behind rusty, iron cell doors, barred by straight jackets and haunted by madness. From the past comes the storms as Schizophrenia is set loose on the world once more!

It seems that the ball would not stop rolling as now they are entering the final chapter of their early-days trilogy. Schizophrenia is an iconic album in terms of early thrash and death metal, a household name for those of us invested in extreme metal. This was the point where the Cavaleras refined their dark, dingy, speed-influenced songs, into something a bit more mature, developed, and technical. Decades later, they have once more unlocked the asylum that is Schizophrenia, opening the doors to that banished, twisted recording which will be unleashed unto to world on June 21st via Nuclear Blast Records.
Today, the band releases the pummeling second single entitled ‘From The Past Comes The Storms‘. Costin Chioreanu was once again enlisted to create the animated music video.
Max Cavalera states, “‘From The Past Comes The Storms’ is a ferocious album opener. It is a pioneer song using the ’80s Metal movement’s mentality. I love the apocalyptic vision in Costin’s video, bringing the circle of life and death and war and pain. This is going to be a banger to play live!”
Iggor Cavalera comments, “’From The Past Comes The Storms’ was one of the first songs we wrote for schizophrenia, also included in a demo version. I love the rawness between the old school black/death metal influences mixed with thrash. The video illustrates the vibe of the song very well!”

No stranger to collaborations, the Cavalera brothers enlisted Travis Stone (PIG DESTROYER) on lead guitars, and that choice becomes obvious within the first song. The full lineup would consist of more Cavalera alumni, as Igor Amadeus Cavalera (GO AHEAD AND DIE, HEALING MAGIC) once more brought his talents on bass to the fold. Thundering and thrumming the low end with brute force, it is clear that the double Iggor and Igor combination is a rhythm section to be reckoned with.
It should come as no surprise that the CAVALERA brothers always felt that these songs deserved a fresh take with modern production. From April 15th to June 5th, 2023 the band re-recorded the album at Focusrite Room in Mesa Arizona. Mixing and mastering was handled by Arthur Rizk (SOULFLY, GO AHEAD AND DIE, TURNSTILE).
Schizophrenia’s album cover has obsessed and fascinated fans for decades. The brothers left no stone unturned and no detail unnoticed, also revisioning the original cover artwork of the album, restored in hand-painted watercolors by Eliran Kantor.

Max Cavalera states, “The Third World Trilogy is finally complete with Schizophrenia, Bestial Devastation, and Morbid Devastation, all three Brazilian underground gems! To me, Schizophrenia is the ultimate death/ thrash experiment! I was inspired to take on the world and this recording shows my commitment is relentless! This one is for all the generations to enjoy! Play at Max volume!”
Iggor Cavalera comments, “1987 was a very progressive year for metal, with releases like CELTIC FROST Into The Pandemonium, VOIVOD Killing Technology, and BATHORY Under The Sign Of The Black Mark, so it was no surprise on how we approached Schizophrenia pushing our boundaries from a black/death metal sound to a more thrash metal aesthetics.
