Today Mascot Records rejoice as alt-rock heroes Dinosaur Pile-Up release their brand-new album after six years of pain and struggle – they’ve now reclaimed those hardships and turned them into 12 nuggets of pure gold. ‘I’ve Felt Better’ is out today on Mascot Records, and you can get a slice of the title track HERE.

They are also gearing up to hit the road again with a five-date UK headline tour in September, as well as an extensive tour of the US with A Day to Remember and Yellowcard from 22 October to 22 November.
 
‘I’ve felt better…’ started as a makeshift mantra when Matt Bigland was hospitalised and unwilling to sift through the layers of trauma with every friend who checked-in to see how he was doing – indeed, often unable to speak through a mouth filled with centimetre-wide sores – Matt found himself defaulting to that wry, understated three-word response. After four years of repetition and rattling around his head, those words are reclaimed as the title to Dinosaur Pile-Up’s defiant fifth album: 12 songs to draw a line under a half-decade of sickness and struggle, a distillation of his agonising uncertainty and self-analysis.

A recurring shining light of DPU in 2025 is the word ’empowerment’. Channelling the worst of times into the new album has allowed them to release some of the most potent songs they have ever written. 

“I’m so stoked that I’ve Felt Better is now out there in the world. That feels really good,” Bigland says. “The response to the songs so far has been so awesome and just so positive, which is a really great feeling after releasing music after such an extended period. I’m super proud of the songs and of the record as a whole, so it’s cool that people are so excited about it. And now we get to take these songs out on the road and see everyone’s response face to face!! It’s gonna be awesome.”
 
“This record is about triumph over adversity through perseverance and resilience,” he continues. “I’m so proud that it actually got made as its journey was a rough one, and I’m so proud that it’s going to be out there in the world. For me, I think it will serve as an epitaph to an intensely challenging and defining part of my adult life. But I’m just delighted that I’m on the other side of it, and it’s now memorialised in solid rock.”

Since their comeback single, ‘Bout to Lose It, was released, fans have rejoiced at their return. The barnstorming “My Way” is a hip-hop-inflected ode to staying true to oneself and staying angry at a twisted modern music industry. At the same time, “Big Dogs” is a gleeful takedown of ass-backwards celebrity freebie culture, and “Sick of Being Down” is essentially a post-traumatic existential breakdown articulated as a 3-minute garage punk rock song, all the way to the most recent single, the arena-ready pop-punk triumph of Love’s The Worst.
 
It’s great to have DPU back, and now they can let ‘I’ve Felt Better’ run free into the world in all of its awesomeness.

Alt-rock heroes Dinosaur Pile-Up today drop their new single, the raucous heart-on-sleeve, Sick Of Being Down. The single is taken from their first new album in six years, I’ve Felt Better, which will be released on 22 August via Mascot Records. You can watch the lyric video for the track HERE.
 
The band has also announced a special one-off show at the Leadmill, Sheffield, UK on 24 June as part of the venue’s farewell party, as well as an enormous tour of the US with A Day To Remember and Yellowcard from 22 October to 22 November.
 
The harrowing experience Matt Bigland went through when hospitalized with ulcerative colitis in critical care is one part of his story. Adjusting to life back home came with several challenges, which he channels on their new single. Sick Of Being Down is a grungy, mesmerizing treatise on the exhaustion of balancing mental health, taking us back to Matt’s lowest point and finding empowerment in how he made it out.  
 
“Sick Of Being Down is essentially a post-traumatic existential breakdown articulated as a 3-minute garage punk rock song,” he says. “Trying to readjust myself to life after hospital was a really confusing journey. I felt conflicted about myself. What I liked and what I didn’t. What I was, what I wasn’t. All my priorities had changed; my ‘place’ in the world felt different, and that was a jarring feeling to navigate. I was experimenting with weed again to see if I could balance my mental state a little better, and one day, I was wondering if I was in a cycle of kind of self-fulfilling cause and effect; I’m sick of being down when I’m high, cos I’m high when I’m sick of being down. 
 
The video features clips from vintage movies, including a few famous faces, for a wild ride. “I wanted the lyric video to be something surreal,” Matt explains. “The narrative of the song and the footage aren’t linked, but somehow create something new when forced together. It took a minute to find a piece of footage that worked, but in the end, I think we ended up with something really cool and kinda weird! It suits the song for me now.”

Dinosaur Pile-Up have just dropped their latest banger, the gnarly Big Dogs, taken from their first new album in six years, I’ve Felt Better, which will be released on 22 August via Mascot Records. You can listen to the track HERE.
 
Matt Bigland relishes the “power in positivity” of the larger-than-life Big Dogs – a gleeful takedown of ass-backwards celebrity freebie culture where the richest and most successful always ‘eat for free’ while needy nobodies scrabble for scraps.’
 
“Big Dogs is a big dumb song about the fact that when you’re rich and famous people give you everything for free – but when you’re hustling down at the bottom nobody gives your broke ass anything! And that doesn’t make any sense!!” Bigland says. “It should surely be the other way around!! I love this song because it feels like The Viagra Boys and Pantera fucked and then Slayer turned up for the solo. It’s cool!”

The song features extra vocals from Karen Dió, Larry Hibbitt (Hundred Reasons), and Jaws The Shark. The band have revealed a skit video to accompany it; Matt vs a big dog – check it out over their Instagram page HERE. “I got to hang out with a giant Doberman for the day, which was so cool!” he says. “I love big dogs like that. Giving it a stroke was like stroking an actual horse. Then I got to writhe on the ground for a couple hours with a leaf blower on full power pointed at my head. Which was, y’know… weird.”

Big Dogs is the third single to be taken from the reinvigorated alt-rock heroes. In April, they dropped the raucous and defiant My Way and before that ‘Bout to Lose It, which was their first new music since 2019’s Celebrity Mansions and it announced their return in a big way. The track is five years of pent-up emotion—hope, despair, resignation, and colossal bravery—let loose into a blistering 3:40 minutes of Dinosaur Pile-Up at their absolute best.

They are also “absolutely buzzing” about the chance to let it rip on a UK tour in September, starting on 5th at XOYO, Birmingham. Striking up a relationship online with Karen Dió was a shard of gold in a sea of grey.   In the end, real love shines through. Motivating himself to get out of the hospital, Matt kept a photo of a wedding ring on his phone and promised himself that marrying Karen would be his reward for pulling through. That promise was fulfilled in April 2022, and a thread of romance runs from their partnership through the heart of the record. So it’s fitting that Karen is part of his return and the new album.
 
Ultimately, this album’s seeing the light of day is a huge part of Matt’s happily ever after. He’s more focused on work, home, and life’s simple pleasures than ever. All that has underlined why music matters, which is why the album runs the whole gamut of emotions—exhaustion, mental health, empowerment, celebrity, vulnerability, and, at the heart of the album, love.

“I wrote “My Way” because I’m gonna do what I want, how I want, my way,” singer-guitarist Matt Bigland reflects. “I made peace with the fact that I’m never going to be recognised as ‘cool’, and that I will never be in the “what’s hot” of the rock scene, and that my talents as a songwriter will seemingly never be worthy of mainstream acclaim. As a younger artist, that still held some weight or value in my mind. But that’s OK. I will do my thing my way because I dig what I do. Doing my thing, my way. I love My Way because it’s this crazy mix of an Eminem-type vibe with a big rock song that even has this kind of ‘Amish farm breakdown ‘ and a hardcore breakdown in the same song. That sounds fun, right!? Sign me the fuck up!!”

I felt incredibly vulnerable. I had no control. But hearing people in the final hours of their lives forced me to think about what would happen if I were to die. What was I leaving behind? What really mattered while I was here?”
 
Flash back to 2018. Ten years of chasing opportunity and betting big, on every chance had built Dinosaur Pile-Up into one of the UK’s most beloved alt. rock bands. It had also left them flat broke, physically and mentally drained, and without a label to release their imminent fourth album, Celebrity Mansions. It became their make-or-break record. Between Matt, bassist Jim Cratchley and drummer Mike Sheils, it was agreed that failure would mean calling it quits. However, the rock gods were smiling on them, and the album was a hit. On the back of their US Top 5 Rock Radio runaway hit “Back Foot” they went on the road with Shinedown in the US and lined up major summer festival dates, along with a North American tour with The Offspring and Sum 41 in North America through to the end of the year. They were soaring. 2020 was going to be massive – then everything changed.

At his worst, he suffered rapid weight loss, internal bleeding, and proliferation of sores in his mouth and over his body, which continued to grow worse. Sections of his tongue were removed for investigation – while he was conscious. Most unnervingly, the doctors seemed to be panicking, unable to stop his throat collapsing in on itself. 
 
“People don’t relate things like health crises with being a dude in a band,” he stresses the sense of isolation that came with the ordeal. “We’re more associated with rocking out and having a great time.”

Maddeningly, Matt’s trip to her South American homeland at New Year’s 2021 would be cut short: worsening health forcing a return to the UK and setting him on a lonely spiral towards some of the darkest days of his entire life.

In the end, real love shines through. Motivating himself to get out of the hospital, Matt kept a photo of a wedding ring on his phone and promised himself that marrying Karen would be his reward for pulling through. In many ways, brilliant, shapeshifting opener – and lead single – ‘Bout To Lose It begins at the end, dropping us into the shoes of a frontman chomping at the bit to get back to business but low on confidence, unsure if fans still give a damn after so much time away: ‘I guess I’m back on the edge / Maybe I never left! / Would have been nice if you cared / But what did I expect?!’

That’s the harsh truth with which the Dinosaur Pile-Up frontman has wrestled with. When ulcerative colitis left him in critical care in early 2021, he began to think again about what it’s really all about.

“You think you’re halfway through life, but then you realise you might be right at the end,” Matt smiles. “Being in that room was scary. I felt incredibly vulnerable. I had no control. At my lowest point, I couldn’t have felt further from being that dude onstage playing to a big crowd. That was difficult to rationalise. I was skin and bones, wrecked, feeling like I was going to die, wondering what had happened to me and why.”

Unwilling to portray an image that didn’t truly reflect what he was going through, Matt dropped off social media entirely. It added another level of separation from the outside world, most of whom had no idea the nightmare he was living. February, 2021 was the first time he’d been admitted to hospital, a stay cut short due to a lack of beds. “I was sent home with permission to self-administer morphine. It felt dangerous. I could have killed myself with that syringe.”

The band resurfaced for performances at Reading and Leeds 2021 – which saw Matt still swollen from the massive Methylprednisolone dose that had gotten him out of hospital – along with an end-of-year UK tour with Enter Shikari and Nova Twins. Their long-delayed Kentish Town Forum headline show in March, 2022 was an emotional explosion, alongside a riotous performance at the 2000Trees festival that summer.  2023 saw them take the stage at 2000Trees again, with the summer centring around a triumphant return to Download festival.

“‘Bout To Lose It is about feeling completely and utterly on the edge of your capacity emotionally. I wanted to write a song that had an intro that would correctly set the scene as the first track back after a 4 or 5 year break from being out ‘in the world’ due to ill health. I wanted it to be intense and visceral. And I wanted it to be heavy metal,” Matt says.

 “It’s not about whether I might get to be rich and famous any more,” he explains. “It’s about being excited for people to get to hear my songs. I want to be free of the bullshit of how people perceive me – or us – and what it means to be a ‘cool band’. I’m proud that we’re still here as a band at all.
