DOUG ALDRICH: “Unreleased Dio Song Will Potentially be Released in 2024”

The Dead Daisies Guitarist Doug Aldrich recently spoke to Jimmy Kay of Canada’s The Metal Voice about the band’s upcoming greatest Hits album and North American tour. Plus he talks about how an unreleased Dio track that he has possession of, will potentially see the light of day in 2024 through Wendy Dio.

Aldrich told The Metal Voice,” Prior to ‘Electra’ (Released in 2012), he Ronnie James Dio) had another song. I had that track, and I put a solo on it. It didn’t have a title, Years went on. And then I ended up doing a renovation at my house and I took those hard drives and I put them in storage (with that track on one of the drives). So at the moment, there’s talk that Wendy wants to put out some stuff, some unreleased stuff next year, in ’24, with Ronnie, including a remake of the track that he sent me, which I’m still in the process of finding it. And Wendy texted me last week and said, ‘Any luck?’ And I said, ‘I’ll get it, Wendy.’ I just have dozens of hard drives I need to go through to find it. And once I do, I’ll give her the track and I’ll either record it with her and them or somebody else will. But it was haunting, because it was Ronnie playing bass and playing rhythm guitar with a drum machine and singing, and the vocal was just, it was haunting, man; really crazy.”

Doug Aldrich played with Dio from 2002-2006.

The Dead Daisies upcoming “Best Of” Album release will include two previously unreleased tracks from the last recording session. It will be available on double CD & Vinyl on August 18th.

Canada’s The Metal Voice recently interviewed Rock legend Glenn Hughes ( Deep Purple, Rock Hall of Fame) and guitarist Doug Aldrich (Dio , Whitesnake) from The Dead Daisies to talk about their upcoming album Holy Ground which is due on January 22, 2021 via SPV.

What is it like to have Glenn in the band now?
“It’s a brand new day, we are very happy to have Glenn leading this ship. It’s still the Dead Daisies but it’s a brand new start. It’s not so far away from Deep Purple in some ways, that there were different eras of Deep Purple. This is like Version four, Mark four of the Daisies” Doug Aldrich

“It’s another chapter in my life, it was a good experience for me to come into this, Doug is an old friend, I love Doug, it’s a great ship we are flying here. We go back 25 years and Doug played in my band about 5 years ago, it was fantastic and back then we talked about doing more work, we didn’t know it was going to be in The Dead Daisies but here we are doing just that .” Glenn Hughes

What is the difference musically between the Corabi era and now with Glenn in the band?
“We love John (Corabi) and are dear friends but basically it’s a great change because we are not trying to replace John, we are going in a fresh direction. Glenn basically brings a grooviness and heaviness to the band that maybe we didn’t have that before with John when we had a different thing. They are like apples and oranges in terms of musical styles. ” Doug Aldrich

“It would have been silly to repeat the same formula. I was brought into this band to change the game if you will and to make it just a different vibe. With the same classic rock movement, the same generational values where classic rock is. I don’t like the word classic rock or any terminology for rock music, it’s just music that we feel is appropriate for this time. The songs were written before pandemic and they speak to a lot of people. For me to join this band was a beautiful moment for me cause I wanted to express myself musically in this band and I was allowed to do that. So we are pressing forward, we are not looking so far back, we are in the moment, we are pressing all the right groove moments,we are just getting on with life. We spent a lot of time together last November and December. We made the album in France, we lived together and we ate together, we laughed together, we rocked together and it was a great moment. You can hear on the album there is a great blend of musicians all bringing the love to the table and I’m glad we captured ‘Holy Ground’ in that moment in time before we got hit with this awful virus ” Glenn Hughes

Does Glenn Hughes write about waterfalls like Dio wrote about Rainbows?
“No one has touched on this before, I’m glad you touched on it, if you listen to my work even 50 years ago I was singing about the sea, of the ocean, on the shore, like Medusa, always on the shore. I live on the ocean here in LA. It’s like I am always singing about the sea, it’s enchanting to me so I thought the waterfall I can’t go back to the shore, it’s typical Glenn stuff, it’s tongue and cheek but it’s what I write about. ” Glenn Hughes

Will you be playing cover songs live?
“I don’t think there is going to be a lot of covers going forward, I think the Dead Daisies were a cover band and that is now going to change cause there are so many songs that have been written and been written as we speak. I just think The Daisies were a little short on material before and it’s just time to press the boat about and this band is a killer band.” Glenn Hughes

Glenn any other projects going on with Tony Iommi?
“There is always something going on with Tony (Iommi) we have done three albums and you never know and there is a possibility there will be another one. But at this time it is so hard to say anything I’m just doing everything I can to make sure The Dead Daisies get to as many people as humanly possible.” Glenn Hughes

BURNING RAIN: New Album “Face the Music” Out March 22nd, First Single/Video “Midnight Train” Released

BURNING RAIN, a hard rock band founded by guitarist extraordinaire Doug Aldrich (Revolution Saints, The Dead Daisies, ex-Whitesnake, Dio) and vocalist Keith St John (ex-Montrose, Kingdom Come), announce the release of their fourth studio album, “Face the Music” on March 22, 2019, via Frontiers Music.

In conjunction with the album announcement, the band have shared the latest single, “Midnight Train”, along with an accompanying music video. When asked why the band chose to release “Midnight Train” as the first single, Aldrich explained, “when we were asked what song encompasses the sound of BURNING RAIN, ‘Midnight Train’ seemed like a good choice. It sounds fresh and heavy, but still sounds like us. Everyone will have different ideas about favorite songs and there are a number of tracks that could have been first, but we just went with ‘Midnight Train.”

“’Midnight Train’s’ message, albeit fully ensconced in carnality, is about wanting something so brutally bad when you can’t have it,” added St. John. “The main character here is basically a deeply tortured soul during all the daytime hours. The phallic likening to the train and its track along with the blackness, the bed of nails, and the cravings of the night are meant to further fortify the extremity of sexual addiction. Doug had all the basic music together including bass, drums, and all when he first played me a demo of the riff. I loved it immediately. The first ex-perimental vocal track I scatted out had the basic framework for the chorus, which we both felt had good potential, but the original verse began with a higher, bluesier part that seemed to not quite fit. After I fashioned a new verse with a lower, more growly approach, we both felt it really complimented the chorus and we knew this track was in good standing!”

BURNING RAIN was established in 1998 by guitarist Doug Aldrich and vocalist Keith St. John. After meeting through mutual friends, Aldrich and St. John commenced work on what would eventually become their self-titled debut album. The 1999 record established BURNING RAIN as a hungry yet seasoned group of musicians. Although the album was limited in its release, it did receive rave reviews from fans and critics alike for their take on heavy, blues-y hard rock. The following year, BURNING RAIN released the follow up, “Pleasure To Burn” which showed a matured Aldrich-St John collaboration that gained even higher praise than the first album.

In 2001, Aldrich joined DIO and later departed in 2003 as he was approached by David Coverdale to join a newly reformed Whitesnake, while St. John joined forces with guitar legend Ronnie Montrose. While still in Whitesnake, Aldrich started working on new BURNING RAIN music, which saw the light of day in 2013 as the album “Epic Obsession”. Their third release was again met with enthu-siams from fans and critics alike. Aldrich would later leave Whitesnake and join The Dead Daisies and Revolution Saints, which left BURNING RAIN on an extended hiatus.

Now, finally a new album is ready for release! Face the Music is a blues driven hard rock record which is truly a tour-de-force. With a renewed lineup featuring the amazing Blas Elias (SLAUGHTER) on drums and bassist Brad Lang (Y&T), the album evokes the sound of the classic 70’s hard rock scene, but also stays true to the Burning Rain sound.

One thing is for certain, BURNING RAIN has made the wait for new music well worth it.

When asked about The Dead Daisies acoustic set before every gig on tour
“We have been extremely busy, we are doing in store guitar Daisyland shows , which is a very casual acoustic set where everybody in the band takes a turn singing and we jam and mingle with the crowd” – Doug Aldrich

“The whole premise of the free acoustic shows is we get really close to the fans, today you don’t see that with a lot of bands, unless you pay the band money to see and meet them. We take pictures with the fans, talk to them and be with them, it’s a cool thing. ” – Deen Castronovo

When asked Deen Castronovo what he thinks of the rumour that Steve Perry will reunite with Journey
“I talk to Neal Schon (Journey guitarist) on a weekly basis we are very close and we are still very tight. I don’t think Steve Perry is going to come back, that’s just what I hear from the Journey camp. I don’t think Steve Perry wants to, why should he, he is frigin Steve Perry he doesn’t need Journey’s help anymore. His new song is brilliant I’m just glad he is back. ”

When asked Doug Aldrich about any unreleased Dio songs
I know I have one song. Ronnie asked me to play guitar on a new song and they were thinking of package it with some Dio product that he and I worked on together as a tour promotion. He gave me a song and asked me to put guitar solo to and I did and brought it back then Ronnie told me forget about that song I have a new one and that song was Electra. Electra was the last song he recorded. but this other song that he passed on is really deep and haunting, Ronnie played bass on it, guitar on it, he sang on it and I put a solo on it and I think Simon programmed a drum machine.”

REVOLUTION SAINTS – featuring Deen Castronovo (JOURNEY, BAD ENGLISH), Doug Aldrich (THE DEAD DAISIES, WHITESNAKE, DIO), and Jack Blades (NIGHT RANGER, DAMN YANKEES) – debuted their first ever live performance on April 28, at the VIP unplugged party of the Frontiers Rock Festival in Milan (Italy), playing the setlist of songs from their first album, plus a few surprises!
